Vehículos aspiracionales, ya sean en el lado lujoso o deportivo del espectro automotriz son un cliché en el imaginario de las personas, sin importar su trasfondo o conocimiento en estas materias... 

Supongo que esto es debido al hecho que la mayoría de gente sueña con autos fuera de su alcance, ya sea por causa de su costo astronómico o exclusividad / producción limitada y creo que la única excepción a esta regla son las personas asquerosamente ricas, para quienes no hay tal cosa como artículos aspiracionales... 

¿Quién no disfrutaría un Super Auto moderno o un Clásico, tal vez un Hot Rod o un modelo de Lujo Superior, un Muscle Car o un Custom de buen gusto, la clase de vehículos que no verías en forma regular?... 

Me gustan también, no hay razón para negarlo, pero mi gusto no está limitado a esas excentricidades, me considero una persona con los pies en la tierra y usualmente tomo mi distancia de la corriente principal, porque todos aman un vehículo aspiracional, es algo trillado y ¿qué hay sobre los utilitarios?... 

Me encantan los vehículos utilitarios, eso es seguro, no son elegantes o refinados en el sentido general de la palabra, porque fueron hechos para los deberes diarios, no para cumplir un capricho, fueron hechos para la vida real. 

Estos vehículos nacieron de la necesidad y ese es precisamente su mérito, su dignidad es ser herramientas de trabajo, para ayudar al progreso y también son medios para hacer que los sueños se hagan realidad, porque contribuyen a generar ingresos, ¡eso es loable!... 

Mi invitado para esta publicación pertenece a la primera generación de la línea Super Duty, una reintroducción de este nombre que fue usado hace décadas para una serie de camiones para trabajo pesado: el Ford F-450 Super Duty Cabina Regular DRW (Rueda Doble Trasera, por sus siglas en inglés) de 1999. 

Con una GCWR (Clasificación de Peso Bruto Combinado, por sus siglas en inglés) de 26,000 lbs (11.793 kg), una GVWR (Clasificación de Peso Bruto Vehicular, por sus siglas en inglés) de 15,000 lbs (6.803 kg) y una carga útil de 8,000 lbs (3.629 kg), este Camión para Trabajo Mediano Clase 4 es un fierro serio para flotillas en diferentes industrias y fueron ofrecidos solo en configuración de Chasis y Cabina (no había platón de pickup disponible para los modelos F-450 y F-550). 

Puedes ver este Ford F-450 con numerosas opciones de "ropa de trabajo": platón con estacas, camión de pluma / canastilla, cama baja, volquete, camión taller, ambulancia, camión de bomberos de trabajo liviano, grúa, furgón, bus escolar, RV (Vehículo Recreacional / Casa Rodante, por sus siglas en inglés) y la lista continua; de hecho, cualquier cosa concebida por carroceros privados podría ser adaptada para crear una herramienta especializada de trabajo duro. 

Para el F-450 había básicamente dos alternativas de planta de poder: un motor de 415 pulgadas cúbicas, 6.8 L, Ford Tritón V10 de Bloque Pequeño a gasolina y un motor de 455 pulgadas cúbicas, 7.3 L, International-Ford Powerstroke V8 Turbo-Diesel, pero en estas ligas, el V10 era comparativamente más débil así que el diesel era la opción a considerar, sin importar la inversión inicial más alta y el mantenimiento más costoso, ya que no tenía prácticamente pérdida de potencia en gran altitud o en pendientes pronunciadas... 

Extraño los viejos tiempos de Matchbox (y Hot Wheels), los tiempos cuando no era tan difícil conseguir sus modelos a través de los canales regulares de distribución, los tiempos cuando sus modelos tenían más diecast o construcción completa en diecast y el plástico usado tenía mejor calidad, los tiempos cuando MBX ofrecía características especiales y más partes de forma regular, los tiempos cuando algunos ejecutivos de Mattel no eran tan mezquinos... 

En resumen, extraño los tiempos cuando Matchbox era más Matchbox y menos Mattel, tan cortante como podría sonar es verdad: la sobrevivencia de esta marca original del Reino Unido ha sido lograda a un alto costo para su reputación entre los coleccionistas, quizás demasiado alto para su futuro a largo plazo... 

Con toda honestidad, no veo a Matchbox alcanzando su esplendor anterior, cuando era una marca más independiente (quiero decir, independiente específicamente de Mattel), sería ingenuo y probablemente la mayoría de coleccionistas recientes de esta marca NO han notado algo elemental: desde 2012, la Serie Lesney Edition, aquella que presentaba construcción completa en diecast, fue descontinuada... 

Desde entonces la cantidad de plástico ha sido aumentada a través del tiempo, aún más, los modelos con carrocería Y chasis en diecast desaparecieron por completo del portafolio de Matchbox, en todas sus líneas, incluyendo Adultas y De Lujo... 

Por otro lado, ¿cuándo fue la última vez que MBX tuvo lo que podría considerarse una verdadera línea Premium, teniendo en cuenta estándares coherentes, no opiniones infundadas o campañas promocionales engañosas: hace más de 15 años (un poquitín demasiado)?... 

¿Buenas noticias?... No creo, entonces, ¿cuál es la alternativa para coleccionistas con experiencia como yo?... 

Volver al pasado: incluso los modelos más antiguos de la era Mattel son mucho más deseables que los actuales, sientes algo más sustancial en tu mano (es obvio: el peso del plástico y de la aleación diecast es diferente), todavía tienes la oportunidad de conseguirlos a un precio razonable y no decepcionan. 

Conseguí este modelo hace más de 5 años, con la ayuda usual de un amigo mío, colega coleccionista e importador; esta réplica fue el primer lanzamiento del modelo, que tuvo al menos 7 iteraciones (versión volquete) y curiosamente una segunda versión con bote inflable fue lanzada un año después (en 2001), esta última tuvo una vida más larga en el mercado. 

El molde fue modificado en 2005 (aquel con bote inflable en 2003) para remover los interiores, de acuerdo con la odiosa política de Mattel de "reducir costos a toda costa" y el modelo luce más juguetezco; no es precisamente una buena movida si me lo preguntas, pero qué esperabas de Mattel, ¿EH?... 

El mío pertenece a la Serie Built It, parte de las líneas Regulares de Matchbox, venía dentro de una tarjeta fabulosa pero fue ofrecido también en caja, dependiendo del mercado, tiene carrocería en diecast y chasis en plástico plateado, la caja de volteo que puede ser levantada es una pieza separada y puedes removerla, el nivel de detalle es muy bueno para una réplica en esta categoría y es una bonita representación del Ford F-450. 

El trabajo de pintura fue hecho en rojo medio con acabado brillante y complementado por una decoración en blanco sobre los paneles laterales, con tampos y/o calcomanías y añadí algunos detalles para las luces frontales y traseras; tiene interiores en gris medio, mientras que las ventanas son ahumanas, la selección de ruedas es agradable aunque demasiado grandes para la escala, dándole una apariencia off-road un tanto exagerada, presenta diseño de rimes 8 Spoke Industrial en cromado y fue hecho en China...

Aspirational vehicles, whether on the luxurious or sporty side of the automotive spectrum are a platitude in the imaginary of people, regardless their background or knowledge in these matters... 

I guess it’s due to the fact that most people dream with cars out of their reach, either because of their astronomical cost or exclusivity / limited production and I think the only exception to this rule are the disgustingly rich people, for whom there is no such thing as aspirational items... 

Who wouldn’t enjoy a modern Super Car or a Classic, maybe a Hot Rod or a Top Luxury model, a Muscle Car or a tasteful Custom, the kind of vehicles you wouldn’t see in a regular basis?... 

I like them too, there is no reason to deny it, but my taste is not limited to those eccentricities, I consider myself a down-to-earth person and I usually take my distance from the mainstream, because everybody loves an aspirational vehicle, it’s kind of hackneyed and what about the utilitarian?... 

I love utilitarian vehicles, that’s for sure, they are not elegant or refined in the general sense of the word, because they were made for the everyday duties, not to fulfill a whim, they were made for the real life. 

These vehicles were born from necessity and that’s precisely their merit, their dignity is to be work tools, to help progress and they are means to make dreams come true as well, because they contribute to generate income, that’s laudable!... 

My guest for this publication belongs to the first generation of the Super Duty line, a reintroduction of this name which was used decades ago for a series of heavy duty trucks: the 1999 Ford F-450 Super Duty Regular Cab DRW (Dual Rear Wheel). 

With a GCWR (Gross Combined Weight Rating) of 26,000 lbs, a GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) of 15,000 lbs and a payload of 8,000 lbs, this Class 4 Medium Duty Truck is a serious ride for fleets in different industries and they were offered only in a Chassis Cab configuration (there was no pickup bed available for F-450 and F-550 models). 

You can see this Ford F-450 with numerous options of "workwear": stake bed, boom / bucket truck, flat bed, dump truck, mechanics truck, ambulance, light duty fire truck, tow truck, box truck, school bus, RV (Recreational Vehicle) and the list goes on; in fact, anything conceived by private coachbuilders could be adapted to create a specialized and hard working tool. 

For the F-450 there were basically two alternatives of powerplant: a 415 cu in, 6.8 L, Triton Small Block V10 Ford gasoline engine and a 455 cu in, 7.3 L, International-Ford Powerstroke V8 Turbo-Diesel engine, but in these leagues, the V10 was comparatively weaker so the diesel was the option to consider, regardless the higher initial investment and more expensive maintenance, inasmuch as it has virtually no power loss at high altitude or on steep slopes... 

I miss the old times of Matchbox (and Hot Wheels), the times when it was not that hard to get its models through the regular channels of distribution, the times when its models had more diecast or full diecast construction and the plastic used had better quality, the times when MBX offered gimmicks and more parts in a regular basis, the times when some executives at Mattel were not so petty-minded... 

In summary, I miss the times when Matchbox was more Matchbox and less Mattel, as cutting as it could sound it’s true: the survival of this brand original from United Kingdom has been achieved at a high cost for its reputation among collectors, perhaps too high for its future in the long term... 

In all honesty, I don’t see Matchbox reaching its previous splendor, when it was a more independent brand (I mean, specifically independent of Mattel), it would be naive and probably the most recent collectors of this brand have NOT noticed something elementary: since 2012, the Lesney Edition Series, the one that featured full diecast construction, was discontinued... 

Ever since the amount of plastic has been increasing over time, even more, the models with diecast body AND chassis disappeared altogether from the Matchbox portfolio, in all its lines, including Adult and Deluxe... 

On the other hand, when was the last time that MBX had what could be considered a true Premium line, bearing in mind coherent standards, not unfounded opinions or misleading promotional campaigns: more than 15 years ago (a bit too much)?...

Good news?... I don’t think so, then, what’s the alternative for experienced collectors like me?... 

Return to the past: even older models of the Mattel era are much more desirable than the current ones, you feel something more substantial in your hand (it’s obvious: the weight of plastic and diecast alloy is different), you still have the chance to get them at a reasonable price and they don’t disappoint. 

I got this model more than 5 years ago, with the usual help of a friend of mine, fellow collector and importer; this replica was the first release of the model, which had at least 7 iterations (tipper version) and curiously a second version with inflatable boat was released a year later (in 2001), the latter had a longer life in the market. 

The casting was modified in 2005 (the one with inflatable boat in 2003) to remove the interiors, according to the hateful Mattel’s policy of "reducing cost at all cost" and the model looks more toyish; it’s not precisely a good move if you ask me, but what you expected from Mattel, HUH?... 

Mine belongs to the Built It Series, part of the Regular lines of Matchbox, it came inside a great card but it was also offered in box, depending on the market, it has diecast body and silver plastic chassis, the dump box which can be lifted is a separate piece and you can remove it, the level of detail is very good for a replica in this category and it’s a nice rendition of the Ford F-450. 

The paint job was made in medium red with glossy finishing and complemented by a decoration in white on the side panels, with tampos and/or decals and I added some details for the front and rear lights; it has medium gray interiors, while the windows are smoked, the wheels selection is pleasant albeit too big for the scale, giving it an off-road appearance a bit exaggerated, it features the 8 Spoke Industrial rims design in chrome and it was made in China...
