Cuando el Volkswagen Escarabajo o Tipo 1 fue retirado finalmente del mercado de automóviles, estoy bastante seguro que hubo otro gran agujero que llenar en el salón de la fama automotriz y más precisamente en el catálogo de productos ofrecidos por la marca de autos alemana...

Si estamos hablando acerca de una especie de "reemplazo" o más bien un sucesor para el notable Escarabajo, bueno, tienen que llenarse unos zapatos muy grandes y supongo que Volkswagen estaba completamente al tanto del reto, especialmente cuando consideras que las primeras unidades civiles de estos vehículos fueron hechas por 1945 (unidades militares fueron hechas desde 1938)...

Si bien la producción principal del Tipo 1 fue detenida por 1978 en Alemania, continuó más tarde en Latinoamérica (Brasil y México), donde el modelo tuvo un "segundo aliento de vida", aunque sus cifras de ventas estaban lejos de su pico durante los 60s.

Con este cambio en la producción principal del Tipo 1, teniendo en mente una reducción importante de los costos operativos como resultado de esta decisión, el Escarabajo adquirió un "sabor latino", de alguna manera llegó a ser más que un coche alemán y recibió apodos cariñosos como: "Vocho" en México, "Fusca" en Brasil, "Cucaracha" en Nicaragua, Honduras y El Salvador, "Escarabajo" en Colombia particularmente, pero también en Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, Perú, Uruguay, Costa Rica, España o Venezuela.

El último Tipo 1 fue hecho en 2003, en la fábrica localizada en Puebla, México, pero las primeras líneas concretas del sucesor del Escarabajo fueron exhibidas en el North American International Auto Show de 1994, con el Concept 1, el cual se convirtió más tarde en el modelo de producción introducido para esta publicación: el Volkswagen New Beetle de 1998 y 2000, un Coupé 2 Puertas Hatchback Compacto.

Ahora, en el mercado automotor de Latinoamérica, del cual es parte Colombia mi patria, prácticamente no hubo brecha entre el Tipo 1 (Escarabajo más antiguo / original) y el New Beetle, pero el Escarabajo en Estados Unidos estuvo ausente durante más o menos 20 años y Volkswagen estaba interesada en atender este mercado con una nueva interpretación de este clásico.

El New Beetle fue desarrollado en el estudio de diseño Volkswagen de California, por J. Mays y Freeman Thomas, con el consumidor norteamericano en mente, pero también considerando el mercado global y el estilo conjuga de una forma equilibrada las líneas y rasgos originales del Escarabajo, con las amenidades y requerimientos en términos de seguridad, confiabilidad, comodidad y conectividad de los carros contemporáneos; sin embargo, en el camino, dejó de ser el "auto de la gente" y se convirtió en el "auto de la gente chic", con todas sus implicaciones...

Supe de Johnny Lightning por causa de sus Muscle Cars, uno de los focos de mi colección, pero mi aprecio por esta marca creció por causa de la otra clase de modelos que esta marca desarrolló, con el mismo compromiso con la calidad a un precio razonable.

Mientras que esta marca tiene una cuota importante de modelos creados para el mercado norteamericano, durante la gerencia de Playing Mantis su catálogo fue ampliado para incluir vehículos de otras proveniencias: Europa y Japón.

Esa fue una decisión atrevida desde un punto de vista de mercadeo, salir de la zona de confort es "algo" riesgoso, pero con el tiempo probó ser también una decisión correcta.

No muchos coleccionistas de productos de Johnny Lightning saben de estos modelos basados en coches importados, en parte porque esta marca, después de la era Playing Mantis, siempre manejó producciones bajas, algo más en sintonía con su perfil Premium así que, los productos de JL no son fáciles de encontrar en términos generales (su "entorno natural" es el mercado secundario), pero las posibilidades de conseguir modelos basados en carros importados son incluso más bajas.

Una vez supe de estos modelos basados en autos importados, traté de conseguir tantos como pudiera, siempre que el precio fuera apropiado y aunque tuve que esperar mucho por muchos de ellos, bueno, la espera valió la pena.

Obviamente conseguí los invitados para esta reseña en el mercado secundario, con la ayuda de un amigo mío, colega coleccionista e importador, hace más de 7 años; uno de ellos pertenece a la Serie Yesterday & Today - Marvel de 2002, una línea incluyendo 18 modelos en tarjeta individual y dos sets de 2 coches (de los cuales este es uno de ellos), también en una tarjeta especial, más ancha y el otro pertenece a la Serie Street Freaks - Import Heat de 2004, una línea de 12 modelos ofrecida en 8 temáticas diferentes, en tarjeta individual.

Tiene construcción completa en diecast, una característica muy deseable que en realidad muy pocos fabricantes en el segmento Premium ofrecen de forma consistente, las proporciones fueron muy bien manejadas, excepto en las ruedas que lucen un poquitín más pequeñas de lo que deberían, probablemente debido a la escala 1:60 del modelo, el nivel de detalle y realismo son sobresalientes, como es habitual, incluso en el chasis.

Los trabajos de pintura son pulcramente complementados por decoraciones complejas, en el estilo cuidado de Johnny Lightning; el primero fue hecho en negro con acabado brillante, añadiendo tampos y/o calcomanías para todos los paneles de la carrocería, en una decoración basada en una serie de cómics de Marvel llamada Ultimate X-Men, presentando a Wolverine, más los detalles usuales para las luces frontales, de señal y traseras, molduras de la ventanas, etc; el segundo fue hecho en naranja claro con acabado de escarcha metálica, complementado por una decoración con tampos y/o calcomanías, la cual tiene una mezcla muy interesante entre estilos Hot Rod / Import Tuner, que le dan una personalidad única y llamativa.

Los interiores fueron trabajados en negro y blanco respectivamente, mientras que las ventanas son transparentes y ahumadas respectivamente; el primer modelo (New Beetle de 1998) tiene ruedas multiparte presentando un diseño de rimes simple en cromado con llantas en caucho labradas, mientras que en el segundo (New Beetle del 2000), también con ruedas multiparte, el diseño de rimes contemporáneo 5 Spoke, con acabado cromado es complementado por llantas plásticas; el bonus para la Serie Yesterday & Today es una grandiosa cartelera que cambia las imágenes a través de un ingenioso sistema de persianas y el bonus para la Serie Street Freak es una tarjeta de colección genial presentando una ilustración del coche, finalmente, ambos fueron hechos en China...

When the Volkswagen Beetle or Type 1 was finally retired from the market of automobiles, I’m pretty sure there was a big hole to fill in the automotive hall of fame and more precisely in the catalog of products offered by the German car brand...

If we are talking about a sort of "replacement" or rather a successor for the remarkable Beetle, well, some very big shoes have to be filled and I guess Volkswagen was completely aware of the challenge, specially when you consider that the first civilian units of these vehicles were made by 1945 (military units were produced since 1938)...

While the main production of the Type 1 was halted by 1978 in Germany, it continued later in Latin America (Brazil and Mexico), where the model had a "second breath of life", albeit its sales figures were far from its peak during the 60s.

With this shift in the main production of the Type 1, bearing in mind an important reduction of the operating costs as a result of this decision, the Beetle acquired a "latin flavor", somehow it became more than just a German car and it received affectionate nicknames like: "Vocho" in Mexico, "Fusca" in Brazil, "Cucaracha" in Nicaragua, Honduras and El Salvador, "Escarabajo" in Colombia particularly, but also in Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, Perú, Uruguay, Costa Rica, Spain or Venezuela.

The last Type 1 was made in 2003, in the factory located at Puebla, Mexico, but the first concrete lines of the successor of the Beetle were displayed at the 2004 North American International Auto Show, with the Concept 1, which became later the production model introduced for this publication: the 1998 and 2000 Volkswagen New Beetle, a Compact 2-Door Coupe Hatchback.

Now, in the Latin American automotive market, of which my homeland Colombia is part, there was virtually no gap between the Type 1 (older / original Beetle) and the New Beetle, but the Beetle in United States was absent during pretty much 20 years and Volkswagen was interested into cater this market with a new rendition of this classic.

The New Beetle was developed in the Volkswagen design studio of California, by J. Mays and Freeman Thomas, with the American consumer in mind, but also considering the global market and the styling conjugates in a balanced way the original lines and traits of the Beetle, with the amenities and requirements in terms of safety, reliability, comfort and connectivity of contemporary cars; however, in the way, it stopped being the "people’s car" and became the "chic people’s car", with all its implications...

I knew about Johnny Lightning because of its Muscle Cars, one of the focuses of my collection, but my appreciation for this brand grew because of the other kind of models this brand developed, with the same commitment to quality at a reasonable price.

While this brand has an important share of models created for the North American market, during the management of Playing Mantis its catalog was widened to include vehicles from other provenances: Europe and Japan.

That was a daring decision from a marketing point of view, get out of the comfort zone is "somewhat" risky, but over time it proved to be also a sound decision.

Not many collectors of Johnny Lightning products know about these models based on imported cars, in part because this brand, after the Playing Mantis era, always managed low productions, something more in tune with its Premium profile so, products by JL are not so easy to find in general terms (its "natural environment" is the secondary market), but chances to get models based on imported cars are even lower.

Once I knew about these models based on imported cars, I tried to get as much as I could, provided that the price was appropriate and albeit I had to wait long for many of them, well, the wait was worth it.

Obviously I got the guests for this review in the secondary market, with the help of a friend of mine, fellow colector and importer, more than 7 years ago; one of them belongs to the 2002 Yesterday & Today - Marvel Series, a line including 18 models in individual card and two sets of 2 cars (of which this is one of them), also in a special, wider card and the other belongs to the 2004 Street Freaks - Import Heat Series, a line of 12 models offered in 8 different themes, in individual card.

They have full diecast construction, a very desirable feature that actually very few manufacturers in the Premium segment offer consistently, the proportions were very well managed, except in the wheels that look a tad smaller than they should, probably due to the 1:60 scale of the model, the level of detail and realism are outstanding, as usual, even in the chasis.

The paint jobs are neatly complemented by complex decorations, in the careful style of Johnny Lightning; the first one was made in black with glossy finishing, adding tampos and/or decals for all the panels of the body in a decoration based on a series of Marvel comics called Ultimate X-Men, featuring Wolverine, plus the usual details for front, signal and real lights, windows moldings, etc; the second one was made in light orange with metal flake finishing, complemented by a decoration with tampos and/or decals, which has a very interesting mix between Hot Rod / Import Tuner styles, that gives it an unique and striking personality.

The interiors were worked in black and white respectively, while the windows are clear and smoked respectively; the first model (1998 New Beetle) has multipart wheels featuring a simple rims design in chrome and styled rubber tires, while in the second one (2000 New Beetle), also with multipart wheels, the contemporary 5 Spoke rims design, with chrome finishing is completed by plastic tires; the bonus for the Yesterday & Today Series is a great billboard that changes the images through a witty shutter system and the bonus for the Street Freak Series is a cool trading card featuring an illustration of the car, finally, both were made in China...
