=) ENGLISH The fact that most of my car publications are about samples of the American car industry, doesn’t mean that I don’t have eyes for "specimens" from other latitudes...
It’s time to make an imaginary trip to Sweden, far north of Europe, where the cold weather is the rule and hence where the driving conditions are "somewhat" difficult.
AB Volvo (which were part of AB SKF... Yep, the ball bearing manufacturer) has a good reputation around the world thanks to its cars, specially when we are talking about safety issues.
But they have as well a profitable business manufacturing trucks, buses and construction machinery.
It was surprising for me to know that the first Volvo truck (a.k.a. Series 1) was released in 1928 and more than that, it was an immediate success both inside and out Sweden.
The FH Series, to which belong this 2004 Volvo FH12 Heavy Truck, was introduced in 1993, is still in production and with more than 400,000 units sold worldwide so far, is a respectable player in this segment.
For the third generation (since 2001) the FH line updated the cab design, improved the aerodynamics, introduced a new automatic gearchange transmission (I Shift), a new electronic system and engine improvements.
Talking about the engine, this is a fine piece of engineering called D12F, Inline 6 turbocharged intercooled diesel, 12,1 L, producing between 400 hp and 520 hp depending on the configuration and a load capacity up to 48 T... A lot of power if you ask me!
The net weight is 17,8 T while the payload is 22,5 T, not inconsiderable at all.
Apart from the obvious special characteristics in the body / chassis design to make it a "heavy all terrain, all wheel drive", the engine is another great development.
The TD73 KCE is a 411 cu in, 6,7 L, Inline 6 turbocharged diesel engine, rated at 251-255 hp, which seems to be very "pale" if we try to compare it with the numbers of a standard Muscle Car engine, but there is no comparison possible here, since this monster can carry 22,5 T at a maximum speed of 52 km/h and that’s performance in other level!
Finally I had the time to publish this huge diecast gotten in 2012 (it seems I still have a big backlog =PPPPP).
It’s my first encounter with something by Cararama and a pair of heavy machines was for me the right selection to start.
However, the 1:50 scale was "a tad" challenging in the photo shoot, since a 18" long vehicle is really out of the range on my tiny "photo studio".
Most of the parts in this set are plastic, which contributes to the reasonable price tag, but there is a very good level of detail and a quality paint job / tampos to compensate the shortage of metal.
These have plastic inserts for the head / rear lights, rubber tires, there is no opening doors for the truck but the cabin can be lifted to expose the engine.
The dump truck has a nice gimmick in the "hydraulics" to raise and lower the dump.
Actually, it was a great deal for me and the chance to satisfy my taste for heavy machinery.
1 Sam 2:8-9 "He raiseth up the poor out of the dust and lifteth up the beggar from the dunghill, to set them among princes and to make them inherit the throne of glory: for the pillars of the earth are the LORD's, and He hath set the world upon them. He will keep the feet of His saints and the wicked shall be silent in darkness; for by strength shall no man prevail."
Volvo cars are considered premium in my country and well, we do have Volvo bus as public transport in the past which says a lot on Volvo's reputation on larger machinery. There's quite a complete set you have there. Pretty powerhouse collection..
HEHEHE... nice to hear a bit more about your country, pal !!!... Volvo has a very good reputation in my country as well... there are available both cars and heavy machinery, but the trucks themselves are rather scarce... also the public transport uses articulated buses by Volvo along with others by Mercedes Benz... thank you very much for your compliment on my collection my friend !!! =)
In terms of color, I like the yellow truck coz I don't really fancy green but in terms of features and overall looks, I prefer the green truck because you can see the engine - now that is awesome!!!!
this time i must agree with you... the heavy truck would look much better in light blue or black or yellow or even red, but it seem that this model doesn’t have other color scheme options =/////... the detail and QC for both on them is quite good and i guess the big scale helps a lot... i would like to get more heavy trucks but in a smaller scale, since the size of this diecast is too big for my space of exhibition... =)

My alternate blog in WordPress
From now, I will be publishing basically the same contents in both blogs, but for reviews before March 18, 2019, you must read my Blogger blog...
I’m a professional graphic designer and a restful collector, but above all: I’m someone who doesn’t take for granted anything, just because someone else says so. I think this hobby goes way beyond buying stuff here and there: anybody with money can buy collectibles, but not anybody becomes collector by doing so. I think as well that this hobby is, more than anything, about knowledge, about making sense of what happens around us and just like any other kind of knowledge, if it’s devoid of ethics, is worthless. I like to address topics around collectionism, including, but not limited to: history, industry, forums, groups, collectors, distributors, sellers, etc. I’m fully aware that criticism is essential for our hobby: everything is susceptible of improvement and we the collectors demand quality, but the industry around it doesn’t necessarily shares that vision. After all, well-targeted criticism always helps to detect failures and correct them, it’s like critical thinking: it helps you see things as they really are and not just as how they are presented to you. If you are someone who likes to look beyond the surface, welcome, if that is not the case, continue at your own risk...
