ENGLISH North America is the craddle of many scandalous and crazy ideas... Well, scandalous and crazy for the rest of the world, which is used to the normal and boring stuff.
If you’re one of those guys / gals with a "I love the standard" tattoo in the forehead, don’t worry, I will not kick your face (so hard, that your cervical vertebrae will gnash), neither I will stab your liver (one of the most painful deaths), NO!...
I will not waste my time in someone who is already lost and doomed!... LOL!...
OK, that was a bit rude, but normally I’m a very kind guy (in my dreams...) and I will not use my "persuasive tactics" unless I perceive too much idiocy around me... XDDDDD...
Now, returning to the initial topic, the german designers and engineers involved in the creation of the Volkswagen Beetle, would have never imagined one of their brainchilds transformed in a crazy off-road.
The Beetle platform is so suggestive, that some people around the world has taken it as the base for strange automotive projects...
Let’s face it, the Beetle is an icon, wherever it arrives, it creates a sort of "familiar feeling", it’s charming, charismatic and is very customizable as well!...
In the 60s, there was a sort fever for the off-road vehicles, mainly in the United States and more specifically in southern California.
The recreational vehicles, also known as Buggies, were very popular to "conquer" the open desert, sand dunes and beaches.
Most of them were based on a Volkswagen Beetle chassis, but others used more parts, including the bodywork and these were known as Baja Bugs.
These heavily modified versions of the Beetle, changed the normal wheels for heavy duty off-road wheels, hence, the original fenders were replaced for shorter fiberglass fenders.
The suspensions were reworked for more ground clearance and stiffness.
A tubular steel cage was mounted, to strengthen the security of the passengers.
The rear engine is totally exposed to aid in cooling, also this configuration, combined with the relatively light front of the Beetle, helps to improve the traction, as it lacks of a four wheel drive.
Other modifications include: front and rear bumpers with scout lights, more powerful engines, longer shock absorbers (with more travel), coilover-type springs instead of the original torsion bar and others, in order to improve the comfort, safety, driver control and performance.
The first Baja Bug was built by Gary Emory of Parts Obsolete, around 1968 and Dave Deal, a californian cartoonist, used a Baja Bug in the Mexican 1000 racing, of 1968, for the first time (this race takes place in a region which is also known as Baja California in northwest Mexico and that’s the origin of the name "Baja")...
I was not pretty sure if this model by Hot Wheels, was based on an actual car, with HW you almost always have this feeling, but once I made my mandatory research, the doubt was resolved (and these are a pair of pictures which will show you that I’m not delirious... Just click here and here).
It has a diecast body / chassis construction, which is a very welcome feature for me.
This is an old model, manufactured for the first time in 1984 (its first debut was with Real Riders tires!) and, as usual in my case, it was designed by Larry Wood.
The mold is nicely detailed, is heavy and is a big favorite among collectors (mainly because is a Bug, I guess).
The older one (first from top to bottom) features chassis painted matching body color, the others are unpainted (but lacquered, I think so).
The paint job / tampos are sporty and accurate, the interiors are great as well and it has a tubular cage inside the cabin, as the real ones.
Obviously, they have off-road tires / wheels but the last one (from top to bottom), belonging to an Adult line, features Real Riders tires and special rims design, the front wheels are different to the rear ones and that’s very, very rare.
Hopefully, there will be more Volks on the way so, you should pay me a visit me again!...
Act 11:15-18 "And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning. Then remembered I the word of the LORD, how that HE said: John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost. Forasmuch then as GOD gave them the like gift as he did unto us, who believed on the LORD JESUS CHRIST; what was I, that I could withstand GOD? When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified GOD, saying: then hath GOD also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life!."
I have seen vintage Volk Beetle but jungle thrill is one of a kind. It's a crazy idea like u mentioned. Lol.. The one in Maroon or purple has a better paint job and I come to realise that a lot of HW cars were produced in Malaysia these days.
you mean the one from and adult line (the third from top to bottom) ???... i guess so, well, obviously it has better finishings because is most expensive of the bunch, but i love all of them =D... also, yeah, you’re right pal, all these diecast were made in Malaysia and the main reason for that is the production cost... right now, China has the best manpower in this segment so, they became more expensive for the largest manufacturers... Malaysia is one of the recent options to keep costs kinda low... =)
HEHEHE... this is an offroad and i already that know you’re not keen of this kind of vehicles... however, i found it quite appealing, specially because is a Volks and i love Volks... also, one of them was a gift and i like it so much, that i had to get a few more to complement it... fortunately, i was able to get one from an adult line and other from a vintage line !!!... =)

I’m a professional graphic designer and a restful collector, but above all: I’m someone who doesn’t take for granted anything, just because someone else says so. I think this hobby goes way beyond buying stuff here and there: anybody with money can buy collectibles, but not anybody becomes collector by doing so. I think as well that this hobby is, more than anything, about knowledge, about making sense of what happens around us and just like any other kind of knowledge, if it’s devoid of ethics, is worthless. I like to address topics around collectionism, including, but not limited to: history, industry, forums, groups, collectors, distributors, sellers, etc. I’m fully aware that criticism is essential for our hobby: everything is susceptible of improvement and we the collectors demand quality, but the industry around it doesn’t necessarily shares that vision. After all, well-targeted criticism always helps to detect failures and correct them, it’s like critical thinking: it helps you see things as they really are and not just as how they are presented to you. If you are someone who likes to look beyond the surface, welcome, if that is not the case, continue at your own risk...
