2009 - 2011 Mercedes-Benz G Series (G-Klasse) G55 AMG 4Matic AWD / 4x4 - Midsize Executive / Luxury 5-Door Off-Road SUV / Wagon (American Specs) - 2011 AMG Minicar Collection Series 1/3 - 1/8 Diecast Scale 1:71 by Kyosho

An association or rather, as it’s known in the a fields of commerce and industry, a "joint-venture" between Germany and Austria, seemed for me a very unlikely factor that would eventually lead to the development of the G Series by Mercedes-Benz, until I realized that was exactly the case for this peculiar vehicle...

I always thought that the G-Klass was a product entirely created by the German three pointed stars brand and it was not just an unfounded assumption of mine; after all, I knew very well about the military origins of this vehicle and the "military tradition" of the governments of Germany.

By the way, the "G" in this line stands for "Geländewagen", whose transliteration is in turn: "cross-country vehicle" or "all-terrain vehicle", and the profile of this product was far from what it’s know for today.

But yeah, the "G" was a "two-handed" development between Mercedes-Benz and the Austrian engineering consortium Steyr-Daimler-Puch, albeit the latter was in charge of the final assembly and production, also it’s worth mentioning that this consortium is dedicated mainly to military projects, so it’s no surprise that from the get go it were developed with military applications in mind.

Speaking about the profile of the "G", the idea with this project was to create a vehicle with the features and performance of some off-road products like: Land Rover Defender, Toyota Land Cruiser FJ, Nissan Patrol / Safari or Jeep CJ-5: sturdy, reliable, practical, roomy, capable of going virtually anywhere, nothing pretentious actually.

Some people pose that the Unimog was the direct ancestor of the "G" Klass and while I agree that some engineering elements of the first one can be seen in the latter and it’s a product of the same brand, a closer ancestor of this iconic off-road / SUV, in terms of its typology, can be rather the Volkswagen Kübelwagen, another multipurpose military vehicle of which there will be a publication in the future, if GOD allows.

Along with military versions of this vehicle, the "G" was offered as well in commercial and civilian versions, in several configurations: 2-door convertible, 2-door wagon, 2-door panel wagon, 4-door passengers wagon, pickups, etc., apart from those specifically modified for military applications and it was released originally for 1979.

Today, for this publication I’m introducing one of the renditions of this famous off-road: the 2009 - 2011 Mercedes-Benz G Series (G-Klasse) G55 AMG 4Matic AWD / 4x4, a Midsize Executive / Luxury 5-Door Off-Road SUV / Wagon, with American Specs (Left Hand Drive), a representative of the second generation of the line.

While the "G" has managed to keep its "essence intact" in terms of exterior design, it has seen, nonetheless, several evolutive updates and some extravagant variations / special editions have been developed over time.

For instance, a 6-wheeled mastodont (G 63 AMG 6x6), a superlifted wagon (G 550 4x42), an ultra-luxurious SUV (Maybach G 650), a rather absurd V12 powered wagon (G 65) and the list goes on, including aftermarket modifications made by reputed customizers among we can mention: Mansory, Brabus, Hofele, Klassen, Phillip Plein and the like...

I must confess I was looking for this model, in this particular rendition by Kyosho, since long ago; the G Wagon, with its boxy shape, off-road scrolls, utilitarian yet flamboyant styling and its German-Austrian heritage, has been a great favorite of mine and as unusual as it might sound, a few examples of this beast have been imported to my homeland, so I have seen it in flesh more than once and I love it...

I got it with the help of a friend of mine, fellow collector and importer / private seller more than 7 years ago; its acquisition was far from easy, in fact, my first try was a failure, because someone else got it before I realized it was available, so I asked this friend of mine to get another unit, but I had to wait a few months before it were available again: I think the wait was worth it...

By the time I got it, at some point of 2016, this scale replica by Kyosho was the only option in this market to get a "G" Klass of the Premium category and both the actual vehicle and the mini-replica have been favorites among collectors; this factor added difficulty to the acquisitions as well.

Nowadays there are several scale replicas to choose in 1:64 scale or around this scale, albeit their prices can vary quite a bit, with examples by: iScale, Para 64, MotorHelix, Era Car, Tarmac, XCarToys and Almost Real, as far as I know, along with a few OEM versions, but the Kyosho rendition has stood the test of time quite well.

For the 2011 AMG Minicar Collection Series, to which my guest belongs, it was offered in black, white and the silver version I’m featuring here; this particular model is now genuinely hard to find and rather expensive; however, recently the model was released again in the current presentation (window box, unlike the previous blind box), in several colors, including: yellow, apple green, orange, hot pink, white, silver, gray, purple and royal blue.

It has diecast body and black plastic chassis; the level of detail is fabulous as always with this brand, the chassis received painted touches in silver, for the exhaust system and the overall quality of this Premium item is excellent, nothing to envy to more recent renditions offered by other diecast brands; yet the scale is not 1:64, but 1:71 and that’s a bit disappointing.

The paint job was made in silver with metallic finishing and the result is fantastic; it’s complemented by extensive tampos and/or decals, on all the panels of the body, accurately placed, additional tampos and/or decals were included for the windows moldings and the cover for the spare wheels at the rear, part of which received chrome finishing; there are plastic inserts for the front and tail lights, rearview side mirrors and obviously the covered spare wheel.

The interiors were worked in black, with the same quality of the exterior; the wheels are multipart, featuring a realistic and nice 5 Spokes rims design in dark silver / gunmetal, with silver lip and styled synthetic rubber tires; there is a display base in black, featuring the name of the model printed in silver and it was made in China...

Ezk 39:11-16 "And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will give unto Gog a place there of graves in Israel, the valley of the passengers on the east of the sea: and it shall stop the noses of the passengers: and there shall they bury Gog and all his multitude: and they shall call it The valley of Hamongog. And seven months shall the house of Israel be burying of them, that they may cleanse the land. Yea, all the people of the land shall bury them; and it shall be to them a renown the day that I shall be glorified, saith the LORD GOD. And they shall sever out men of continual employment, passing through the land to bury with the passengers those that remain upon the face of the earth, to cleanse it: after the end of seven months shall they search. And the passengers that pass through the land, when any seeth a man's bone, then shall he set up a sign by it, till the buriers have buried it in the valley of Hamongog. And also the name of the city shall be Hamonah. Thus shall they cleanse the land."

1998 - 2000 Land Rover Discovery Series II LE 4WD (L318) - Full Size Luxury 5-Door Wagon SUV / Off-Road (American Specs - LHD - Left Hand Drive) - 2016 Land Rover Series 4/6 MB524 Diecast Scale 1:63 by Matchbox

Who would say that The Rover Company Limited, a business that began producing bicycles, back in 1885, shifting later, around 1901, to the manufacturing of motorcycles and automobiles, would end developing only Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) and Crossovers, in different sizes and trim levels, for the Premium segment of the automotive market...

Nonetheless, it’s not even the only case in this industry, because in a similar fashion, for the market of North America, Buick can be mentioned, a brand that is part of the General Motors Company conglomerate and offers the same kind of products, including models like: Encore GX, Envision, Enclave, Encore and even the Wildcat EV Concept, all showing the current focus of this brand, albeit it previously manufactured mainly coupes, sedans, convertibles and eventually station wagons.

Looking at the contemporary automotive industry as a whole, you can notice at least two prevalent trends: nearly all the brands of vehicles offer at least one SUV / Crossover model and all of them are changing their portfolios to offer only electric mobility...

And it shouldn’t be surprising, after all, the automotive segment, as well as other industries and economic activities, converge towards this kind of preset trends, that can be more easily evidenced when you analyze in particular the last 150 years of world history, an exercise that people should do more often, in order to realize what’s happening around them and why.

Besides, if you bear in mind that the whole universe of vehicle manufacturers belong to a few conglomerates and there are pretty much 15 of them, it should be quite understandable why these trends can be imposed through all the industry, without restrictions and in an effective way.

Now, The Rover Company Limited no longer exists, neither the automobiles it used to produce, but there is a vehicle this company developed, precisely during the World War II and based / influenced by the Jeep, that became one of the bearers of the Rover name until now.

I’m talking about the Land Rover Series I, released and registered in 1949; "curiously" this name, Land Rover, belonged to a model, that became a brand, later a company and currently it’s a subsidiary of Jaguar Land Rover, which in turn is owned by Tata Motors Limited, another conglomerate.

One of the successors of this "old veteran" is my guest for this publication: the 1998 - 2000 Land Rover Discovery Series II LE 4WD (L318), a Full Size Luxury 5-Door Wagon SUV / Off-Road, this model represents the second generation of a product that helped to bring "some variety" to the Land Rover portfolio, catering an intermediate market, between the Defender and the Range Rover lines.

Just like it happens with Buick, the Disco, as the Land Rover Discovery is colloquially called in United Kingdom, shows the current focus of the British brand in off-road vehicles, either in the form of SUVs, like the Disco or Crossovers, like the Freelander, later replaced by the Evoque (of which you can read here).

It was built on the platform of the Range Rover, so it has pretty much the same size and the overall body design resembles the original Range Rover of the 70s, kind of boxy, merged with the modernities of the late 90s; however, the equipment is not as sophisticated as in its Range companion as is to be expected in its price range.

Products by Land Rover, including virtually all its portfolio, namely: Defender, Freelander, Evoque, Discovery, Range, have been imported to my homeland and that’s why the Disco is a familiar sight for me, so I can appreciate a model like this...

Don’t you feel that those Lines of the Intermediate category (between the Regular and Adult categories), created by Hot Wheels and Matchbox for some of the largest chain retail stores in United States, like: Walmart, Target, Krogers, Toys ‘R Us (when it was in the business, as we knew it), Kmart and the like, are pretty much what items from the more recent Mainline should be?...

I mean, these Intermediate Lines offer slightly better paint jobs and overall finishes, exclusive to these Lines, better quality control than their current Mainline counterparts, also a special card design and well, you can get them, when it comes to the primary market, only through the already mentioned retail stores, but all these "extras" duplicate the asking price, which is not proportional with what yo get in return...

And you might ask why is not proportional?, well, just because in general terms these items belonging to Intermediate Lines, do NOT have substantial differences with items from the Mainline and I don’t mean by that, a special card design (which doesn’t mean that much for me, since I always set free my collectibles from their packaging) or a different color for the paint job or a zamac finishing or an additional tampo here and there...

NO, those are NOT substantial differences that would justify a 100% increase in the price and maybe for buyers or collectors wannabes this trick works, but definitely not for experienced collectors, just because we demand more, i.e., if the asking price is going to be duplicated, then we demand at least something twice as good, which is not the case with these Intermediate Lines for retail stores.

The point is that Mattel, along with its toy car brands, are intentionally creating these Lines of the Intermediate category, to introduce the idea among buyers that, if they want some of the quality and features they already could get in older Mainline items, they have to pay more.

If that sounds for you like a deceiving premise to justify the increase in price, it’s because you already understand what the good value for money principle means and accordingly, just like any experienced collector, you will be considering better options, instead of acquiring overpriced items.

That’s how this kind of products are "digging their own grave", it’s another reason why the Mainlines of Hot Wheels and Matchbox, as we have know them, have their days numbered: you just cannot increase the price of your products / services, while the quality and features remain the same or decrease and get away with it, it doesn’t work like that in the real world...

My guest for this review is one of those items from Lines of the Intermediate category, for specific retail stores, it belongs to the 2016 Land Rover Series, of which I already introduced another model.

This Series was created for Walmart retailers, but somehow I managed to get it through the primary market, in a local retail store that belongs to the Chilean multinational retail company Cencosud, which, as far as I know, has nothing to do with Walmart.

The Land Rover Series has its ups and downs, with toy cars poorly executed and others more appropriate, my guest is one of the "ups", just because it’s a relatively old mold, originally released in 2001, with at least 24 iterations, including variations, for Lines in the Regular and Adult categories.

It offers diecast body and black plastic chassis, the proportion of diecast is decent, but a full diecast construction must be the standard, so this product is below my expectations; the level of detail, on the other hand, is very good and that’s the main reason why it’s part of my collection, the other is that there is not an ugly stem for a rear rivet, but a pair of flaps / tabs, leaving the interiors free of elements that do not exist in the actual vehicles represented.

The paint job was made in light silver with glossy finishing, complemented by a fictitious police decoration, made with tampos and/or decals, that includes elements present in actual police vehicles from United Kingdom, which I guess is intentional, so it looks realistic anyway, but I added painted details in silver for the front scout lights and in metallic red for the tail lights.

As a curious detail, the tail lights were modified in the molds of this toy car since 2010, however, in the actual vehicle, this modification was never included.

The interiors in black are fairly detailed, there is an actual steering wheel, instead of the usual lump of current toy cars by Matchbox, that’s another hit in this product, for a change.

The plastic wheels selection for this model included 6 Spokes Sport Utility rims design in royal blue, that fit very well this model and it was made in Thailand, albeit it was manufactured in China until 2006...

Ezk 38:13-16 "Sheba, and Dedan, and the merchants of Tarshish, with all the young lions thereof, shall say unto thee, Art thou come to take a spoil? hast thou gathered thy company to take a prey? to carry away silver and gold, to take away cattle and goods, to take a great spoil? Therefore, son of man, prophesy and say unto Gog, Thus saith the LORD GOD; In that day when my people of Israel dwelleth safely, shalt thou not know it? And thou shalt come from thy place out of the north parts, thou, and many people with thee, all of them riding upon horses, a great company, and a mighty army: And thou shalt come up against my people of Israel, as a cloud to cover the land; it shall be in the latter days, and I will bring thee against my land, that the heathen may know me, when I shall be sanctified in thee, O Gog, before their eyes."

English version
One very often tends to see these so-called "entry level cars" with some sort of disdain or irony, as if they were the "stigma" for those who are just starting as car owners or those who just cannot afford another "more suitable, worthy or decent car" for their need of a means of transportation...

You know, before the "Great Depression" and the World War II, there used to be a situation in the automotive industry that by today standards would be considered quirky, but at that time it was pretty normal: virtually each car brand and there were many, was specialized in manufacturing products within a certain budget / price range, just because there was no such thing as the large corporations or huge monopolies we see nowadays...

These conglomerates of brands / companies would become visible after the "Great Depression" and World War II, because those who plotted and/or financed these artificial world crises, were able to buy, at ridiculous prices, almost all the existing companies in the industry and commerce, that went bankrupt and since they were already owners of the world banking system, it was an easy process.

The remaining companies were bought shortly after, of course, with the help of another assortment of artificial tribulations for the world population, like: the Cold War, the Korean and Vietnam Wars, the "oil crisis" of the 70s, among others; these companies and brands were either merged, terminated or became subsidiaries of the current conglomerates...

Then, before these planned crises, there was no such thing as "entry level cars", it was a concept created after the few companies in this industry segment, that in some "random" way survived and shortly after would became, "randomly" too, some of the largest car manufacturers, faced the challenge of producing those cars that previously were made by other specialized brands, in order to cater these underserved market niches.

That’s how cars like the BMW 2002 (a model of which you can read here and it’s featured in the pictures of this review too), saw the light and well, the 2002 was one of those "entry level cars" I mentioned at the beginning of this publication, the kind of cars that are not seen with much enthusiasm by most people.

Nonetheless and despite the appearances, the Turbo version of the 2002 was the inspiration and probably the closer and most proper ancestor of my guest for this publication: the 2011 BMW 1-Series M Coupe (135i), a Subcompact 2-Door 2+2 Notchback Coupe / Sports Car, of which a rather low production of 6,309 units was made, between 2011 and 2012.

Both cars, in their regular version, were the most affordable option of a brand that’s still widely known by its products in the executive / luxury segment of the market and pretty much like it happened with the Dino models by Ferrari, they are considered by some as a sort of "bastard children", because they betray the ethos of this brand.

Yet, these cars, I mean the 2002 Turbo and the 1M, were not just the standard version of the entry level model of BMW, but models with a sportier profile, modified versions for higher performance, both endowed with turbo, both were made in low numbers (for the 2002 Turbo the number of units made was even lower: 1,672), but unlike the 2002, the 1M was modified by the M subsidiary of the Bavarian company.

The 2002 Turbo and the 1M managed to remove at least part of the "stigma" imposed in "entry level cars" made by BMW and other luxury brands, these cars transformed their nature from something that was seen with certain disdain into something that was coveted, which is a radical change of perception, that cannot be accomplished without some level of mental conditioning, in which marketing and advertising, that represent forms of propaganda, play an essential role.

Precisely these circumstances show us, among other things, how people can be conditioned to think in a certain way, to change their mindset about virtually any matter, for instance, through the implementation of trends in the industry and other aspects of life, which always involve an intentionality so, following trends is basically a way to be mentally programmed.

But also, when you look at these changes in the automotive industry and other circumstances, from a historical perspective, in context, you can realize how they are connected with other events and how they were orchestrated from the outside, with specific purposes, that have to do with control of the masses, also with power and economic resources concentration in a few hands, in one way or another.

Despite what is claimed by the accidental theory of history, the one that prevails among contemporary historians and related scholars, even taking into account the overwhelming evidence against it, randomness has no place in history; in fact and beyond what has been established by theoreticians in these matters, in a deep sense, randomness has never been a trait of human history...

Matchbox went from being the paradigm, the first brand that came to mind when someone mentioned diecast toy cars, to be the second toy cars brand of the largest toys manufacturer conglomerate, Mattel and it shows: there is no overdose of marketing that can hide that fact and the red giant has been stubborn in trying to show something different, to no avail...

When Mattel acquired Tyco Toys Inc., along with Matchbox, many adult collectors who knew these brands and their products very well, were worried about the future of the English brand, not only about its continuity in the market, but also and more precisely, about how this change of ownership would affect the essential nature / characteristics of these toy cars, because they witnessed the introduction of the infamous plastic chassis in the late 70s.

Mattel promised, just like any large corporation use to promise in vane, that the essence of Matchbox would remain untouched, would be respected, but changes to its essence didn’t stop, they came one after another.

Now we have these plastic toy cars, a poor tribute to the original Matchbox products, with a laughable dose of diecast, cheap digital inkjet printing for their decorations, specially in its lines of the Adult and Deluxe categories, spotty quality control and yet, more expensive than before, they look just like cheaper imitations of Hot Wheels toy cars and that’s not precisely a compliment.

Adult collectors were right about their worries after all, as usual and Mattel lied about its intentions with Matchbox, as usual too...

Do you know what would be actually a token of goodwill from Mattel, in order to show its good intentions with Matchbox?, well, to introduce again full diecast construction (body and chassis) for all its models, to begin with...

But I don’t think it will happen, because do you know how many models Matchbox has introduced, with full diecast construction, considering all its lines of toy cars, since the last time products like those were offered, i.e., since 2012?, NOT A SINGLE ONE...

And I’m afraid that the great efforts of the designers team at Matchbox, which shares staff with Hot Wheels, neither can fix this regrettable situation; yet somehow, by the time I got my guests for this review, I had hopes, although increasingly less, that someday I would see the return of full diecast construction.

But I realized my wait was futile and four years later products by this brand were discarded from my list of preferences, altogether...

I got the guests I’m introducing this time, in different ways: the first one, through the secondary market, with the help of a local reseller and the second one was a gift from a dear and close relative, during a travel to New York, at a Toys ‘R’ Us store, both more than 6 years ago.

This model was designed by Ryu Asada and his work was very good in general: one of them belongs to the 2016 MBX Adventure City Series, part of the Mainline (Regular category), while the other belongs to the 2016 Best of Matchbox Series, Release 1 (Toys ‘R’ Us Exclusive), a line from the Adult category and you can read about another example of this line here.

Until now at least 7 iterations have been released, all for the Mainline, except the second one I’m featuring here and there was another version created as promotional for an event.

By the way, the latter model, created for a Toy Show in Leipzig, Germany, I don’t know how Mattel and one of the organizers of that event, had the nerve to offer as promotional a basic toy car, without full diecast construction, nor multipart wheels, featuring a cheap decoration made with digital inkjet printing, with just a display base as complement, for an original asking price of around US$ 35, excluding taxes and shipping.

Besides, currently, some swindlers are daring enough to ask for around € 280 for one example: you need to be a special kind of idiot to pay that much for a trinket like this, that at US$ 15 is already overpriced, even bearing in mind that only 500 units were made...

The overall level of detail is good, the dose of diecast is decent, but you already know that decent is not enough; the body was made in diecast and the chassis in black plastic for both toy cars.

The paint jobs were made in golden with Metalflake finishing and black with glossy finishing respectively, complemented by tampos and/or decals for the front lights, grille and plate, also for tail lights and rear plate, but the second one received additionally areas in matte black, with fine lines in orange and silver, on the hood and the side panels, that look nice, but they have some mismatches; at least they didn’t receive the lousy digital inkjet printing.

These models offer smoked windows in both cases, the interiors were worked in black and caramel respectively, with a basic level of detail, but they look cheaper than usual with that lustrous finishing, a fine texture would make them look much better.

My first sample offers plastic wheels featuring 10 Split Spokes rims design in chrome, while the second one offers multipart Ultra Max wheels, featuring 6 Split Spokes rims design in black with orange lip and styled synthetic rubber tires, that give it an off-road appearance that simply does not fit the model, slicks would look much better.

The bonus for the latter was a very nice cardboard box, printed in full color outside (that I would exchange gladly for a full diecast construction any day) and both were made in Thailand...

Ezk 38:8-12 "After many days thou shalt be visited: in the latter years thou shalt come into the land that is brought back from the sword, and is gathered out of many people, against the mountains of Israel, which have been always waste: but it is brought forth out of the nations, and they shall dwell safely all of them. Thou shalt ascend and come like a storm, thou shalt be like a cloud to cover the land, thou, and all thy bands, and many people with thee. Thus saith the LORD GOD; it shall also come to pass, that at the same time shall things come into thy mind, and thou shalt think an evil thought: And thou shalt say, I will go up to the land of unwalled villages; I will go to them that are at rest, that dwell safely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates, to take a spoil, and to take a prey; to turn thine hand upon the desolate places that are now inhabited, and upon the people that are gathered out of the nations, which have gotten cattle and goods, that dwell in the midst of the land."
