1998 - 2000 Land Rover Discovery Series II LE 4WD (L318) - Full Size Luxury 5-Door Wagon SUV / Off-Road (American Specs - LHD - Left Hand Drive) - 2016 Land Rover Series 4/6 MB524 Diecast Scale 1:63 by Matchbox

English version
Who would say that The Rover Company Limited, a business that began producing bicycles, back in 1885, shifting later, around 1901, to the manufacturing of motorcycles and automobiles, would end developing only Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) and Crossovers, in different sizes and trim levels, for the Premium segment of the automotive market...

Nonetheless, it’s not even the only case in this industry, because in a similar fashion, for the market of North America, Buick can be mentioned, a brand that is part of the General Motors Company conglomerate and offers the same kind of products, including models like: Encore GX, Envision, Enclave, Encore and even the Wildcat EV Concept, all showing the current focus of this brand, albeit it previously manufactured mainly coupes, sedans, convertibles and eventually station wagons.

Looking at the contemporary automotive industry as a whole, you can notice at least two prevalent trends: nearly all the brands of vehicles offer at least one SUV / Crossover model and all of them are changing their portfolios to offer only electric mobility...

And it shouldn’t be surprising, after all, the automotive segment, as well as other industries and economic activities, converge towards this kind of preset trends, that can be more easily evidenced when you analyze in particular the last 150 years of world history, an exercise that people should do more often, in order to realize what’s happening around them and why.

Besides, if you bear in mind that the whole universe of vehicle manufacturers belong to a few conglomerates and there are pretty much 15 of them, it should be quite understandable why these trends can be imposed through all the industry, without restrictions and in an effective way.

Now, The Rover Company Limited no longer exists, neither the automobiles it used to produce, but there is a vehicle this company developed, precisely during the World War II and based / influenced by the Jeep, that became one of the bearers of the Rover name until now.

I’m talking about the Land Rover Series I, released and registered in 1949; "curiously" this name, Land Rover, belonged to a model, that became a brand, later a company and currently it’s a subsidiary of Jaguar Land Rover, which in turn is owned by Tata Motors Limited, another conglomerate.

One of the successors of this "old veteran" is my guest for this publication: the 1998 - 2000 Land Rover Discovery Series II LE 4WD (L318), a Full Size Luxury 5-Door Wagon SUV / Off-Road, this model represents the second generation of a product that helped to bring "some variety" to the Land Rover portfolio, catering an intermediate market, between the Defender and the Range Rover lines.

Just like it happens with Buick, the Disco, as the Land Rover Discovery is colloquially called in United Kingdom, shows the current focus of the British brand in off-road vehicles, either in the form of SUVs, like the Disco or Crossovers, like the Freelander, later replaced by the Evoque (of which you can read here).

It was built on the platform of the Range Rover, so it has pretty much the same size and the overall body design resembles the original Range Rover of the 70s, kind of boxy, merged with the modernities of the late 90s; however, the equipment is not as sophisticated as in its Range companion as is to be expected in its price range.

Products by Land Rover, including virtually all its portfolio, namely: Defender, Freelander, Evoque, Discovery, Range, have been imported to my homeland and that’s why the Disco is a familiar sight for me, so I can appreciate a model like this...

Don’t you feel that those Lines of the Intermediate category (between the Regular and Adult categories), created by Hot Wheels and Matchbox for some of the largest chain retail stores in United States, like: Walmart, Target, Krogers, Toys ‘R Us (when it was in the business, as we knew it), Kmart and the like, are pretty much what items from the more recent Mainline should be?...

I mean, these Intermediate Lines offer slightly better paint jobs and overall finishes, exclusive to these Lines, better quality control than their current Mainline counterparts, also a special card design and well, you can get them, when it comes to the primary market, only through the already mentioned retail stores, but all these "extras" duplicate the asking price, which is not proportional with what yo get in return...

And you might ask why is not proportional?, well, just because in general terms these items belonging to Intermediate Lines, do NOT have substantial differences with items from the Mainline and I don’t mean by that, a special card design (which doesn’t mean that much for me, since I always set free my collectibles from their packaging) or a different color for the paint job or a zamac finishing or an additional tampo here and there...

NO, those are NOT substantial differences that would justify a 100% increase in the price and maybe for buyers or collectors wannabes this trick works, but definitely not for experienced collectors, just because we demand more, i.e., if the asking price is going to be duplicated, then we demand at least something twice as good, which is not the case with these Intermediate Lines for retail stores.

The point is that Mattel, along with its toy car brands, are intentionally creating these Lines of the Intermediate category, to introduce the idea among buyers that, if they want some of the quality and features they already could get in older Mainline items, they have to pay more.

If that sounds for you like a deceiving premise to justify the increase in price, it’s because you already understand what the good value for money principle means and accordingly, just like any experienced collector, you will be considering better options, instead of acquiring overpriced items.

That’s how this kind of products are "digging their own grave", it’s another reason why the Mainlines of Hot Wheels and Matchbox, as we have know them, have their days numbered: you just cannot increase the price of your products / services, while the quality and features remain the same or decrease and get away with it, it doesn’t work like that in the real world...

My guest for this review is one of those items from Lines of the Intermediate category, for specific retail stores, it belongs to the 2016 Land Rover Series, of which I already introduced another model.

This Series was created for Walmart retailers, but somehow I managed to get it through the primary market, in a local retail store that belongs to the Chilean multinational retail company Cencosud, which, as far as I know, has nothing to do with Walmart.

The Land Rover Series has its ups and downs, with toy cars poorly executed and others more appropriate, my guest is one of the "ups", just because it’s a relatively old mold, originally released in 2001, with at least 24 iterations, including variations, for Lines in the Regular and Adult categories.

It offers diecast body and black plastic chassis, the proportion of diecast is decent, but a full diecast construction must be the standard, so this product is below my expectations; the level of detail, on the other hand, is very good and that’s the main reason why it’s part of my collection, the other is that there is not an ugly stem for a rear rivet, but a pair of flaps / tabs, leaving the interiors free of elements that do not exist in the actual vehicles represented.

The paint job was made in light silver with glossy finishing, complemented by a fictitious police decoration, made with tampos and/or decals, that includes elements present in actual police vehicles from United Kingdom, which I guess is intentional, so it looks realistic anyway, but I added painted details in silver for the front scout lights and in metallic red for the tail lights.

As a curious detail, the tail lights were modified in the molds of this toy car since 2010, however, in the actual vehicle, this modification was never included.

The interiors in black are fairly detailed, there is an actual steering wheel, instead of the usual lump of current toy cars by Matchbox, that’s another hit in this product, for a change.

The plastic wheels selection for this model included 6 Spokes Sport Utility rims design in royal blue, that fit very well this model and it was made in Thailand, albeit it was manufactured in China until 2006...

Ezk 38:13-16 "Sheba, and Dedan, and the merchants of Tarshish, with all the young lions thereof, shall say unto thee, Art thou come to take a spoil? hast thou gathered thy company to take a prey? to carry away silver and gold, to take away cattle and goods, to take a great spoil? Therefore, son of man, prophesy and say unto Gog, Thus saith the LORD GOD; In that day when my people of Israel dwelleth safely, shalt thou not know it? And thou shalt come from thy place out of the north parts, thou, and many people with thee, all of them riding upon horses, a great company, and a mighty army: And thou shalt come up against my people of Israel, as a cloud to cover the land; it shall be in the latter days, and I will bring thee against my land, that the heathen may know me, when I shall be sanctified in thee, O Gog, before their eyes."

2015 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Coupe Pure Plus AWD - Compact Luxury 3-Door Crossover SUV / Off-Road - 2016 Land Rover Series MB896 1/6 Plastcast Scale 1:64 by Matchbox

For English version scroll below

¿Puedes creerlo?, y luego tienes algunos aspirantes a coleccionistas, casi puedo oirlos diciendo: "Oh!

English version
When you ask an adult collector: "what’s a Matchbox?", the most likely answer would be simply: "it’s a small toy car made in diecast" and of course, the answer may vary in extension, adding more or less details, depending on how much knowledge has this collector...

However, as simple as this answer could be, it encompasses what this noun, that became brand, means, even from a historical point of view...

I would dare to say that this answer, I mean: "it’s a small toy car made in diecast" is not just a description, but a definition of what a Matchbox is; in that sense, the words "toy car" and "diecast" are not merely irrelevant adjectives or descriptors which you can do without, NO, rather they are part of its essence...

Don’t get me wrong, Matchbox has developed and manufactured as well very worthy scale replicas, with the features you expect from Premium items, at some points of its history, not anymore though, at least since 20 years ago and that’s an effort on its part, that we the collectors value, but this is not what defines this brand.

And you know what?, these simple facts really matter, I mean, you wouldn’t hear someone, at least not someone who truly knows Matchbox, replying to the question: "what’s a Matchbox", with, for instance: "is an accurate scale replica made in diecast" or "a small toy car made in plastic"

Nonetheless, the quid of the matter is that since the late 70s, when Matchbox was still an independent company and enjoyed of an unparalleled success in the industry of toy cars, the infamous plastic chassis, with chrome finishing, to "simulate" the appearance of the previous ones in diecast, was introduced.

Ever since, the concept of what a Matchbox is or to go further, the concept of what really a diecast toy car is, has wanted to be replaced by the botchery we see nowadays: rubbishy toy cars made mainly in plastic, that leave much to be desired and that’s not precisely a negligible issue.

The recent toy cars made by MBX look like bootleg items when compared to the original models made by this brand, during its true and only Golden Age, namely the second half of the 50s, the 60s and most of the 70s.

It’s not that there were not some good models here and there after that era, it’s that the rest of eras in the history of this brand simply pale in comparison.

By that time, Matchbox toy cars featured diecast body and chassis, by default, without nonsensical excuses like inflation or things like that, even opening / moving parts in the vast majority of cases, better, crisp details put directly in the molds, when the tampo printing was not widespread, with a sense of quality and dedication of which the current models lack, for the same asking price of any item for the MAINLINE and the distribution was a marvel...

You know, precisely the kind of stuff you expect from a true Golden Age, such a misused term nowadays, as if it were a sort of "sticker" you can put on anything (just like it happens with the Premium designation), but I explained it more in depth in a review you can read here

Matchbox and Mattel think that we, the collectors, have forgotten what a true Matchbox or a true diecast toy car are, how it should look or that a good dose of diecast is essential, not optional...

They wish we were as lenient and moldable as the compulsive buyers that support them so much and that we were already brainwashed by their sly advertising strategies, but guess what?, that’s not the case and we, the collectors, become more demanding over time, not less, because mediocrity is not our business, but theirs...

Then, despite the great efforts of passionate designers, products developed and manufactured by Matchbox have underwent a process of degradation, only with occasional exceptions in certain releases, that make them increasingly less interesting for adult collectors, just because they are not good value for money anymore: either you get relatively cheap, but mediocre products or relatively good, but overpriced products.

Collectors know first hand what Matchbox used to offer originally and what is offering currently, they compare, they know very well about the lousy distribution that has been plaguing this brand since it became part of Mattel and they are stopping collecting these deficient toy cars accordingly...

Yet, some people, allegedly part of this hobby, seem to be very confortable with this undesirable change, so much that they don’t have any qualms saying stupidities, in forums and groups, like: "diecast chassis is fairly overrated and the outrage around the shift to plastic chassis is ridiculous"...

The kind of people who don’t want to hear or read criticism about their beloved brands and their "flawless" products, because they are so used to mediocrity and/or to the role of bootlickers, that when something like: necessary, imperative improvements is mentioned, is as if someone were kicking their b*lls...

Can you believe it?, and then you have some collectors wannabes, I can almost hear them saying: "Oh! Look at the new generation of diecast toy cars for the current -golden era-, made with a minimal dose of... Diecast!?... And tons of low quality plastic!... They are really cool and rad!, aren’t they!"

These thoughtless impostors need to knock some sense in their airheads, seriously!, they are part of the reason why the industry of toy cars, specially the most popular brands like Hot Wheels and Matchbox, are becoming increasingly mediocre with their products, which are also more expensive, something that their huge investment in public relationships cannot hide...

After all, these people keep buying this plastic rubbish or the overpriced stuff Matchbox is selling as "premium items", they believe all the lies divulged by marketing campaigns and brand promoters, in their advertising blogs and videoblogs, they keep financing and encouraging companies that apply the law of the least effort, while other companies, striving to offer collectibles with good value for money, are going bankrupt for the lack of support...

The guest I’m introducing for this publication represents, in a very evident way, what’s wrong with Matchbox and is barely one of many examples: the kind of things that will make this brand and its recent products, no longer a sensible option or an option at all for adult collectors, if that weren’t the case yet, given what has been happening with MBX through time...

And yeah, I know perhaps it will not affect, at least not in the short or medium terms, the sales of Matchbox among mere buyers, because they accept whatever brands toss at them: but buyers didn’t make Matchbox what it is, it was the work of collectors, by the way, because marketing campaigns do not build reputation, but people do...

I got this sort of toy car through the primary market, in a local chain retail store that curiously, at that moment, had a kind of decent stock of Matchbox products, more than 6 years ago.

In fact, it’s even more curious, because this item belongs to the 2016 Land Rover Series, which was made exclusively for (Wal-Mart) Walmart retailers and the Walmart franchise has no presence in my homeland.

This Series belongs in turn to the Intermediate category, between the Regular and Adult categories, with an asking price that is virtually double of that you pay for an item of the Regular category - Mainline, but this increase in price is not justified, regarding what you get in return for that money.

And I got it, because I really like the actual vehicle in which it’s based, namely, the 2015 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Coupe Pure Plus AWD, a Compact Luxury 3-Door Crossover SUV / Off-Road; it’s a familiar sight, because you can see the Evoque here in my hometown, although, only in its 5-Door version.

I was willing to get it through the secondary market, if I couldn’t through the primary, of course, at a reasonable price, but I’m glad I didn’t pay that extra money, because when I had it in my hand, it was a very disappointing product, just because of its excessive dose of plastic, what a waste!, but that’s exactly what the law of the least effort means...

This item was designed by Miguel López and it was originally released in 2016, it has had at least 5 iterations, including variations, all for lines in the Regular category, except the one I’m introducing here.

Only part of its body was made in diecast, because all the top is a plastic capsule, to which you have to add the plastic chassis, with plastic mudguards, also part of the front and rear bumpers was made in plastic and the usual hideous stem for the rear rivet, in plastic, was included: this is not a diecast, but a plastcast AND an insult for collectors.

This model had the potential to be a good toy car based on the Evoque, the work on the part of the body in diecast is satisfying, the level of detail is more than decent, even the paint job made in medium brown with Metalflake finishing is neat, as well as the stock decoration, made with tampos and/or decals, that were well applied.

You cannot see the interiors, because the plastic top is too dark, I thought at first that it didn’t have interiors at all, but later, in 2022, a convertible version was released for the so vaunted, but nothing special actually, Moving Parts Series (if you remember what I mentioned about the true Golden Age of Matchbox, then you know why this Series is not special at all) and I verified there were interiors after all.

The plastic wheels selection for this model and all its iterations so far is with Split 10 Spokes rims design, in this case in dark gray, that look really good on this model, but all the hits added up in the development of this product, don’t even come close to making up for the blunder of putting too much plastic in it; finally, it was made in Thailand...

Ezk 37:24-28 "And David my servant shall be king over them; and they all shall have one shepherd: they shall also walk in my judgments, and observe my statutes, and do them. And they shall dwell in the land that I have given unto Jacob my servant, wherein your fathers have dwelt; and they shall dwell therein, even they, and their children, and their children's children for ever: and my servant David shall be their prince for ever. Moreover I will make a covenant of peace with them; it shall be an everlasting covenant with them: and I will place them, and multiply them, and will set my sanctuary in the midst of them for evermore. My tabernacle also shall be with them: yea, I will be their GOD, and they shall be my people. And the heathen shall know that I the LORD do sanctify Israel, when my sanctuary shall be in the midst of them for evermore."

1956 Ford B-500 / 600 Series Extra Short School Bus Hot Rod Custom (2009 School Busted) 2013 Wal-Mart Exclusive Mail-In Race Rewards Collector Series - Zamac Edition by Hot Wheels

1. Comprar productos Hot Wheels calificados en una tienda local Wal-Mart durante un lapso de 5 meses;

2. Escanear o fotografiar el(los) recibo(s) respectivo(s);

3. Subir el(los) escáner(es) / fotografía(s) del(de los) recibo(s) a un vínculo especial creado para ese propósito en el sitio web de Wal-Mart;

ENGLISH
Long before the automotive industry took its first steps, the segment of coachbuilders was already a thriving activity, with hundreds of firms worldwide and some historians trace its origins to the late 16th century...

From lavish carriages for royalty to humble carts for farmers, passing by railway wagons, coachbuilders took care of anything related with the transportation of passengers and goods for several centuries...

The emergence of self-propelled vehicles posed new challenges for this industry and albeit some people versed in this subject thought that the automobile would lead to the extinction of coachbuilders, in fact, it promoted their specialization, managing to continue in the business.

In the times when serial production was still far from becoming a reality, those who could afford a car should count with the help of a vehicle manufacturer and a coachbuilder, if they wanted to transform their ideas into something concrete.

Even after the automotive industry developed the serial production, with the consequent in-house production of bodyworks, for certain applications or markets it was necessary the collaboration of coachbuilders.

The coachbuilders can manufacture virtually any special vehicle you could devise and the big car manufacturers just don’t have the infraestructure to produce vehicles that can meet specific needs.

One of the sectors in which coachbuilders work, is in the manufacturing of school buses and companies like: Ford, General Motors, Chrysler and others, provide bare chassis which are later completed by firms like: Carpenter Body Works Inc., Oneida Products Corporation, Superior Coach Corp., Hackney Bros. Body Company, The Wayne Works, Perley A. Thomas Car Works Inc., Blue Bird Body Company, Ward Body Works Inc. or Excel Body Corporation, among others (some of them no longer exist).

Ford Motor Company, for instance, developed the B-Series (where "B" stands for Buses), a line of medium duty trucks, based in the respective line of the F-Series (F-5, F-6 and F-7), that was in production between 1948 and 1998.

I’m introducing this time a representative of such line: the 1956 Ford B-500 / 600 Series Extra Short School Bus, which as its designation implies, was the option for the shorter chassis (overall length between 265.2 inches - 6,736 mm and 353.2 inches - 8,971 mm) and lower load capacity (between 13,000 lb - 5,897 kg and 18,000 lb - 8,165 kg).

The school buses made for the market of the United States (the market of each country has its own specifications and regulations), are divided into four types: A, B, C and D, depending on their size and I’m featuring the smallest one (Type A), that currently is not made on a medium duty truck chassis, but on an utility van chassis instead.

The old buses of this configuration were so short, that they looked rather caricaturesque and due to this singularity, they became a sort of holy grails for some car collectors who are looking for unique Hot Rod projects and even one of them was featured in the Season 4, Episode 17, of the TV show Overhaulin’, called "The Short Yellow Bus", introducing a 1956 Ford School Bus belonging to John Force, a legend of Drag Racing and customized by Chip Foose and his team !!!...

Over time, Hot Wheels has found new strategies or channels to offer its products, especially those intended for collectors and one of them is through agreements with different chain retail stores or toy stores like: Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Target or Toys"R"Us...

These agreements are carried out through a mail-in program, whose rules vary slightly depending on the specific retailer or the year of release and it has been in force at least since 2007.

In the time when the guest for this review was released, the "mechanics" of the program was pretty much as follows:

1. Buy qualifying Hot Wheels products in a local Wal-Mart store during a lapse of 5 months;

2. Scan or photograph the respective receipt(s);

3. Upload the receipt(s) scan(s)/picture(s) to a special link created for that purpose in the website of Wal-Mart;

4. The system validates the receipt(s) and grants you a number of points proportional to the purchase and

5. Once you earn enough points, you could redeem this item.

Additionaly, you should fill an order form and mail a check or money order payable to Mattel (in some cases you could pay via credit card) to cover the costs of shipping and processing of each item ordered; finally you receive your item between 8 and 12 weeks later...

Now, in short, this is a REWARD PROGRAM in which you REDEEM an item in exchange of points or purchases or whatever; the main idea with a reward is that you don’t buy it, you just EARN IT, being thus, you don’t pay a single cent for the model itself, otherwise, it wouldn’t be a REWARD; but the process to get it is cumbersome and lengthy so, in the secondary market, some honest sellers will charge you something slighty higher than what you would pay for an item of any Adult line, while others will abuse with the price as much as possible, just because and in my country, as I guess it’s the case everywhere, there are scalpers in bulk...

I’m introducing a model designated by Hot Wheels as School Busted and despite appearances, far from being a designer model (which wouldn’t be inconvenient in my case), in fact, it’s a very plausible reproduction of a 1956 Ford B-500 / 600 Series School Bus, with chassis and body shortened to the limit, also visibly customized like a Hot Rod, but still very realistic; unfortunately there is no hint about the designer involved in the development of this fantastic model, released originally in 2009, which has more than 12 iterations in Adult, and Deluxe lines.

I got mine more than 2 years ago, with the help of a friend, fellow collector and importer, who obviously offered me this item for a reasonable price, otherwise, it wouldn’t be part of my collection; it’s conforting to know that you still can find decent sellers out there, but you must look for them like a needle in a haystack.

It belongs to the 2013 Wal-Mart Exclusive Mail-In Race Rewards Collector Series - Zamac Edition, that came inside a card featuring a similar design to the one used for RLC (Red Line Collectors) or HWC (Hot Wheels Collectors) deluxe lines, albeit the card itself is slightly thinner.

The model has full diecast construction and it feels nicely heavy, the level of detail is very good; regarding the paint job, being a Zamac Edition, the body was just lacquered, but it includes some details in fuchsia, with Metalflake finishing, also tampos and/or decals on the side panels and the roof, featuring a decoration of flames and Hot Wheels logos, in silver, black, white and red; additional tampos and/or decals were included for the headlights, front grille, hood scoop, tail lights, Hot Wheels rear plate and a pair of School Bus edgings at the rear and on top front; quite prolix in my humble opinion.

The interiors were worked in black, there are plastic inserts for the front grille, front bumper and hood scoop, while the windows were tinted in light pink; the wheels are multipart featuring Real Riders Deep Dish rims design, with chrome finishing, styled rubber tires, with red stripe tampos and it was made in Malaysia...

1 Cor 9:7-14 "Who goeth a warfare any time at his own charges? who planteth a vineyard, and eateth not of the fruit thereof? or who feedeth a flock, and eateth not of the milk of the flock? Say I these things as a man? or saith not the law the same also? For it is written in the law of Moses: thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn. Doth GOD take care for oxen? Or saith HE it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written: that he that ploweth should plow in hope; and that he that thresheth in hope should be partaker of his hope. If we have sown unto you spiritual things, is it a great thing if we shall reap your carnal things? If others be partakers of this power over you, are not we rather? Nevertheless we have not used this power; but suffer all things, lest we should hinder the Gospel of CHRIST. Do ye not know that they which minister about holy things live of the things of the temple? and they which wait at the altar are partakers with the altar? Even so hath the LORD ordained that they which preach the Gospel should live of the Gospel."
