Cuando le preguntas a un coleccionista adulto: "¿qué es un Matchbox?", la respuesta más probable sería simplemente: "es un pequeño auto de juguete hecho en diecast" y por supuesto, la respuesta puede variar en extensión, añadiendo más o menos detalles, dependiendo de cuánto conocimiento tenga este coleccionista...
Sin embargo, tan simple como esta respuesta pudiera ser, abarca lo que este sustantivo (en inglés, caja de fósforos), que se convirtió en marca, significa, incluso desde un punto de vista histórico...
Me atrevería a decir que esta respuesta, quiero decir: "es un pequeño auto de juguete hecho en diecast" no es simplemente una descripción, sino una definición de lo que un Matchbox es; en ese sentido, las palabras "auto de juguete" y "diecast" no son meramente adjetivos o descriptores irrelevantes, NO, más bien son parte de su esencia...
No me malinterpretes, Matchbox ha desarrollado y fabricado también réplicas a escala muy dignas, con las características que esperas de articulos Premium, en algunos puntos de su historia, aunque ya no, al menos desde hace 20 años y ese es un esfuerzo de su parte, que nosotros los coleccionistas valoramos, pero esto no es lo que define a esta marca.
¿Y sabes qué?, estos hechos simples realmente importan, quiero decir, tú no escucharías a alguien, al menos no alguien que verdaderamente conozca a Matchbox, respondiendo a la pregunta: "¿qué es un Matchbox?", con, por ejemplo: "es una réplica a escala precisa hecha en diecast" o "un pequeño coche de juguete hecho en plástico".
No obstante, el quid del asunto es que desde finales de los 70s, cuando Matchbox era aún una compañía independiente y disfrutaba de un éxito sin paralelo en la industria de los carros de juguete, el infame chasis plástico, con acabado cromado, para "simular" la apariencia de los anteriores en diecast, fue introducido.
Desde entonces, el concepto de lo que un Matchbox es o para ir más allá, el concepto de lo que realmente un auto de juguete en diecast es, se ha querido reemplazar por la chapucería que vemos hoy en día: coches de juguete de pacotilla hechos principalmente en plástico, que dejan mucho que desear y ese no es precisamente un problema insignificante.
Los carros de juguete recientes hechos por MBX lucen como artículos pirata al ser comparados con los modelos originales hechos por esta marca, durante su verdadera y única Edad Dorada, a saber la segunda mitad de los 50s, los 60s y la mayor parte de los 70s.
No es que no hubiera algunos buenos modelos aquí y allá después de esa era, es que el resto de eras en la historia de esta marca simplemente palidecen en comparación.
Por esa época, los autos de juguete de Matchbox presentaban carrocería y chasis en diecast, por defecto, sin excusas absurdas como la inflación o cosas por el estilo, incluso partes móviles / con apertura en la vasta mayoría de casos, detalles mejores, nítidos puestos directamente en los moldes, cuando la tampografía no estaba extendida, con un sentido de calidad y dedicación del cual los modelos actuales carecen, por el mismo precio inicial de cualquier artículo de la LÍNEA PRINCIPAL y la distribución era una maravilla.
Sabes, precisamente la clase de cosas que esperas de una verdadera Edad Dorada, un término tan mal usado hoy en día, como si fuera una especie de "autoadhesivo" que puedes poner sobre cualquier cosa (justo como sucede con la designación Premium), pero lo expliqué más a profundidad en una reseña que puedes leer aquí.
Matchbox y Mattel piensan que nosotros, los coleccionistas, nos hemos olvidado de lo que un verdadero Matchbox o un verdadero coche de juguete en diecast son, cómo deberían lucir o que una buena dosis de diecast es esencial, no opcional...
Ellos desearían que fueramos tan indulgentes y moldeables como los compradores compulsivos que tanto los apoyan y que ya nos hubieran lavado el cerebro con sus astutas estrategias publicitarias, ¿pero adivina qué?, ese no es el caso y nosotros, los coleccionistas, llegamos a ser más exigentes con el tiempo, no menos, porque la mediocridad no es nuestro negocio, sino el de ellos...
Entonces, a pesar de los esfuerzos de diseñadores apasionados, los productos desarrollados y fabricados por Matchbox han sufrido un proceso de degradación, solo con excepciones ocasionales en ciertos lanzamientos, que los hace cada vez menos interesantes para coleccionistas adultos, simplemente porque ya no tienen buena relación calidad / precio: consigues ya sea productos relativamente baratos, pero mediocres o productos relativamente buenos, pero sobrevaluados.
Los coleccionistas conocen de primera mano lo que Matchbox solía ofrecer originalmente y lo que está ofreciendo actualmente, ellos comparan, ellos saben muy bien acerca de la pésima distribución que ha estado plagando esta marca desde que llegó a ser parte de Mattel y en consecuencia, ellos están dejando de coleccionar estos carros de juguete deficientes...
Con todo, algunas personas, pretendidamente parte de esta afición, parecen estar muy cómodas con este cambio indeseable, tanto que no tienen ningún reparo en decir estupideces, en foros y grupos, como: "el chasis en diecast está bastante sobrevalorado y la indignación alrededor de este cambio al chasis plástico es ridícula"...
La clase de gente que no quieren escuchar o leer críticas acerca de sus amadas marcas y sus productos "impecables", porque están tan acostumbrados a la mediocridad, y/o al rol de lamesuelas, que cuando algo como: mejoras necesarias, imperativas es mencionado, es como si alguien les estuviera pateando las b*las...
¿Puedes creerlo?, y luego tienes algunos aspirantes a coleccionistas, casi puedo oirlos diciendo: "Oh! Mira la nueva generación de autos de juguete en diecast para la -edad dorada- actual, hechos con una dosis mínima de... ¿¡Diecast!?... ¡Y toneladas de plástico de baja calidad!... ¡Son realmente geniales y radicales!, ¡no es así!".
Estos impostores irreflexivos necesitan poner algo de sentido en sus cabezas huecas, ¡en serio!, ellos son parte de la razón porque la industria de los coches de juguete, especialmente las marcas más populares como Hot Wheels y Matchbox, están llegando a ser cada vez más mediocres con sus productos, que además son más caros, algo que su enorme inversión en relaciones públicas no puede ocultar...
Después de todo, esta gente sigue comprando esta basura plástica o las cosas con sobreprecio que Matchbox está vendiendo como "artículos premium", ellos creen todas las mentiras divulgadas por campañas de mercadeo y promotores de marca, en sus blogs y videoblogs publicitarios, ellos siguen financiando y alentando compañías que aplican la ley del menor esfuerzo, mientras otras empresas, luchando para ofrecer coleccionables con una buena relación calidad / precio, están yendo a la bancarrota por la falta de apoyo...
La invitada que estoy introduciendo para esta publicación representa, de una manera muy evidente, qué es lo que está mal con Matchbox y es apenas uno de muchos ejemplos: la clase de cosas que hará que esta marca y sus productos recientes, no sean una opción sensata o una opción en absoluto para coleccionistas adultos, si ese no fuera el caso aún, dado lo que ha estado pasando con MBX a través del tiempo...
Y sí, sé que quizás esto no afectará, al menos no en el corto o mediano plazo, las ventas de Matchbox entre meros compradores, porque ellos aceptan los que sea que las marcas les arrojen: pero los compradores no hicieron de Matchbox lo que es, fue el trabajo de los coleccionistas, por cierto, porque las campañas de mercadeo no construyen reputación, pero las personas sí...
Obtuve esta especie de carro de juguete a través del mercado primario, en una tienda minorista de cadena local que curiosamente, en ese momento, tenía un inventario algo decente de productos de Matchbox, hace más de 6 años.
De hecho, es aún mas curioso, porque este artículo pertenece a la Serie Land Rover de 2016, la cual fue hecha exclusivamente para minoristas (Wal-Mart) Walmart y la franquicia Walmart no tiene presencia en mi patria.
Esta Serie pertenece a su vez a la categoría Intermedia, entre las categorías Regular y Adulta, con un precio inicial que es prácticamente el doble de aquel que tú pagas por un artículo de la categoría Regular - Línea Principal, pero este incremento de precio no está justificado, con respecto a lo que to consigues a cambio por ese dinero.
Y lo obtuve, porque realmente me gusta el vehículo real en el cual está basado, a saber, la Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Coupé Pure Plus AWD de 2015, una Crossover VDU De Lujo Compacto 3 Puertas / Todoterreno; es una vista familiar, porque puedes ver la Evoque aquí en mi ciudad natal, aunque, solo en su versión 5 puertas.
Estaba dispuesto a conseguirla a través del mercado secundario, si no la podía conseguir en el primario, desde luego, a un precio razonable, pero me alegro que no pagué ese dinero extra, porque cuando la tuve en mi mano, fue un producto muy decepcionante, simplemente por causa de su dosis excesiva de plástico, ¡qué desperdicio!, pero eso es exactamente lo que la ley del menor esfuerzo significa...
Este artículo fue diseñado por Miguel López y fue lanzado originalmente en 2016, ha tenido al menos 5 iteraciones, incluyendo variaciones, todas para líneas de la categoría Regular, excepto la que estoy introduciendo aquí.
Solo parte de su carrocería fue hecha en diecast, porque toda la parte superior es una cápsula plástica, a lo cual debes agregar el chasis plástico, con guardabarros plástico, también parte de los bómperes frontal y trasero fue hecha en plástico y el horrendo vástago habitual para el remache trasero, en plástico, fue incluido: esto no es un diecast, sino plastcast Y un insulto para los coleccionistas.
Este modelo tenía el potencial de ser un buen carro de juguete basado en la Evoque, el trabajo en la parte de la carrocería en diecast es satisfactorio, el nivel de detalle es más que decente, incluso el trabajo de pintura en marrón medio con acabado Metalflake es pulcro, así como la decoración de serie, hecha con tampos y/o calcomanías, que fueron bien aplicados.
No puedes ver los interiores, porque la parte superior plástica es demasiado oscura, pensé al principio que no tenía interiores en lo absoluto, pero más tarde, en 2022, una versión convertible fue lanzada para la tan cacareada, pero nada especial en realidad, Serie Moving Parts (Partes Móviles) (si recuerdas lo que mencioné acerca de la verdadera Edad Dorada de Matchbox, entonces sabes porqué esta Serie no es especial en absoluto) y verifique que había interiores después de todo.
La selección de ruedas plásticas en todas sus iteraciones hasta aquí es con diseño de rimes Split 10 Spokes, en este caso en gris oscuro, que lucen realmente bien en este modelo, pero todos los aciertos sumados en el desarrollo de este producto, ni siquiera se acercan a lograr compensar la pifia de poner demasiado plástico en él; finalmente, fue hecho en Tailandia...

When you ask an adult collector: "what’s a Matchbox?", the most likely answer would be simply: "it’s a small toy car made in diecast" and of course, the answer may vary in extension, adding more or less details, depending on how much knowledge has this collector...
However, as simple as this answer could be, it encompasses what this noun, that became brand, means, even from a historical point of view...
I would dare to say that this answer, I mean: "it’s a small toy car made in diecast" is not just a description, but a definition of what a Matchbox is; in that sense, the words "toy car" and "diecast" are not merely irrelevant adjectives or descriptors which you can do without, NO, rather they are part of its essence...
Don’t get me wrong, Matchbox has developed and manufactured as well very worthy scale replicas, with the features you expect from Premium items, at some points of its history, not anymore though, at least since 20 years ago and that’s an effort on its part, that we the collectors value, but this is not what defines this brand.
And you know what?, these simple facts really matter, I mean, you wouldn’t hear someone, at least not someone who truly knows Matchbox, replying to the question: "what’s a Matchbox", with, for instance: "is an accurate scale replica made in diecast" or "a small toy car made in plastic".
Nonetheless, the quid of the matter is that since the late 70s, when Matchbox was still an independent company and enjoyed of an unparalleled success in the industry of toy cars, the infamous plastic chassis, with chrome finishing, to "simulate" the appearance of the previous ones in diecast, was introduced.
Ever since, the concept of what a Matchbox is or to go further, the concept of what really a diecast toy car is, has wanted to be replaced by the botchery we see nowadays: rubbishy toy cars made mainly in plastic, that leave much to be desired and that’s not precisely a negligible issue.
The recent toy cars made by MBX look like bootleg items when compared to the original models made by this brand, during its true and only Golden Age, namely the second half of the 50s, the 60s and most of the 70s.
It’s not that there were not some good models here and there after that era, it’s that the rest of eras in the history of this brand simply pale in comparison.
By that time, Matchbox toy cars featured diecast body and chassis, by default, without nonsensical excuses like inflation or things like that, even opening / moving parts in the vast majority of cases, better, crisp details put directly in the molds, when the tampo printing was not widespread, with a sense of quality and dedication of which the current models lack, for the same asking price of any item for the MAINLINE and the distribution was a marvel...
You know, precisely the kind of stuff you expect from a true Golden Age, such a misused term nowadays, as if it were a sort of "sticker" you can put on anything (just like it happens with the Premium designation), but I explained it more in depth in a review you can read here.
Matchbox and Mattel think that we, the collectors, have forgotten what a true Matchbox or a true diecast toy car are, how it should look or that a good dose of diecast is essential, not optional...
They wish we were as lenient and moldable as the compulsive buyers that support them so much and that we were already brainwashed by their sly advertising strategies, but guess what?, that’s not the case and we, the collectors, become more demanding over time, not less, because mediocrity is not our business, but theirs...
Then, despite the great efforts of passionate designers, products developed and manufactured by Matchbox have underwent a process of degradation, only with occasional exceptions in certain releases, that make them increasingly less interesting for adult collectors, just because they are not good value for money anymore: either you get relatively cheap, but mediocre products or relatively good, but overpriced products.
Collectors know first hand what Matchbox used to offer originally and what is offering currently, they compare, they know very well about the lousy distribution that has been plaguing this brand since it became part of Mattel and they are stopping collecting these deficient toy cars accordingly...
Yet, some people, allegedly part of this hobby, seem to be very confortable with this undesirable change, so much that they don’t have any qualms saying stupidities, in forums and groups, like: "diecast chassis is fairly overrated and the outrage around the shift to plastic chassis is ridiculous"...
The kind of people who don’t want to hear or read criticism about their beloved brands and their "flawless" products, because they are so used to mediocrity and/or to the role of bootlickers, that when something like: necessary, imperative improvements is mentioned, is as if someone were kicking their b*lls...
Can you believe it?, and then you have some collectors wannabes, I can almost hear them saying: "Oh! Look at the new generation of diecast toy cars for the current -golden era-, made with a minimal dose of... Diecast!?... And tons of low quality plastic!... They are really cool and rad!, aren’t they!".
These thoughtless impostors need to knock some sense in their airheads, seriously!, they are part of the reason why the industry of toy cars, specially the most popular brands like Hot Wheels and Matchbox, are becoming increasingly mediocre with their products, which are also more expensive, something that their huge investment in public relationships cannot hide...
After all, these people keep buying this plastic rubbish or the overpriced stuff Matchbox is selling as "premium items", they believe all the lies divulged by marketing campaigns and brand promoters, in their advertising blogs and videoblogs, they keep financing and encouraging companies that apply the law of the least effort, while other companies, striving to offer collectibles with good value for money, are going bankrupt for the lack of support...
The guest I’m introducing for this publication represents, in a very evident way, what’s wrong with Matchbox and is barely one of many examples: the kind of things that will make this brand and its recent products, no longer a sensible option or an option at all for adult collectors, if that weren’t the case yet, given what has been happening with MBX through time...
And yeah, I know perhaps it will not affect, at least not in the short or medium terms, the sales of Matchbox among mere buyers, because they accept whatever brands toss at them: but buyers didn’t make Matchbox what it is, it was the work of collectors, by the way, because marketing campaigns do not build reputation, but people do...
I got this sort of toy car through the primary market, in a local chain retail store that curiously, at that moment, had a kind of decent stock of Matchbox products, more than 6 years ago.
In fact, it’s even more curious, because this item belongs to the 2016 Land Rover Series, which was made exclusively for (Wal-Mart) Walmart retailers and the Walmart franchise has no presence in my homeland.
This Series belongs in turn to the Intermediate category, between the Regular and Adult categories, with an asking price that is virtually double of that you pay for an item of the Regular category - Mainline, but this increase in price is not justified, regarding what you get in return for that money.
And I got it, because I really like the actual vehicle in which it’s based, namely, the 2015 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Coupe Pure Plus AWD, a Compact Luxury 3-Door Crossover SUV / Off-Road; it’s a familiar sight, because you can see the Evoque here in my hometown, although, only in its 5-Door version.
I was willing to get it through the secondary market, if I couldn’t through the primary, of course, at a reasonable price, but I’m glad I didn’t pay that extra money, because when I had it in my hand, it was a very disappointing product, just because of its excessive dose of plastic, what a waste!, but that’s exactly what the law of the least effort means...
This item was designed by Miguel López and it was originally released in 2016, it has had at least 5 iterations, including variations, all for lines in the Regular category, except the one I’m introducing here.
Only part of its body was made in diecast, because all the top is a plastic capsule, to which you have to add the plastic chassis, with plastic mudguards, also part of the front and rear bumpers was made in plastic and the usual hideous stem for the rear rivet, in plastic, was included: this is not a diecast, but a plastcast AND an insult for collectors.
This model had the potential to be a good toy car based on the Evoque, the work on the part of the body in diecast is satisfying, the level of detail is more than decent, even the paint job made in medium brown with Metalflake finishing is neat, as well as the stock decoration, made with tampos and/or decals, that were well applied.
You cannot see the interiors, because the plastic top is too dark, I thought at first that it didn’t have interiors at all, but later, in 2022, a convertible version was released for the so vaunted, but nothing special actually, Moving Parts Series (if you remember what I mentioned about the true Golden Age of Matchbox, then you know why this Series is not special at all) and I verified there were interiors after all.
The plastic wheels selection for this model and all its iterations so far is with Split 10 Spokes rims design, in this case in dark gray, that look really good on this model, but all the hits added up in the development of this product, don’t even come close to making up for the blunder of putting too much plastic in it; finally, it was made in Thailand...
