Coupés y autos deportivos coupé no son una elección común en vehículos para hacer cumplir la ley / policiales en Estados Unidos y muchos otros países a nivel mundial, sedanes o saloons son preferidos por lejos para deberes policivos y hay razones prácticas para eso, lo cual no significa que otras tipologías de vehículos no han sido parte del arsenal de estos cuerpos presuntamente civiles...
Últimamente por ejemplo, VDUs de tamaño mediano y grande se están convirtiendo en una vista cada vez más común, pero han habido vehículos como: pickups, vanes, vagonetas familiares, jeeps, todoterrenos, buses, grúas, camiones para trabajo liviano, mediano y pesado...
La lista no termina allí porque incluye también: helicópteros, barcazas, botes de alta velocidad, motocicletas, camiones blindados (estos últimos, un tipo de vehículos que pone el término "cuerpos civiles" en entredicho, cuando se trata de la policía: policía militar sería más exacto y ese hecho tiene algunas implicaciones preocupantes, que la gente pasa fácilmente por alto) y luego tienes algunos de los más escandalosos super e hiper autos deportivos vistos en Dubai...
Con todo, han habido una buena cantidad de patrullas de policía en la forma de coupés, más específicamente Muscle Cars y otros coches deportivos, desarrollados para el mercado de los Estados Unidos, la mayoría de ellos han sido ofrecidos en ediciones limitadas y por periodos cortos, haciéndolos no tan fáciles de encontrar.
Mi invitado para esta publicación es uno de esos vehículos para hacer cumplir la ley no tan habituales y un modelo bastante interesante: el Ford Mustang LX SSP 5.0 (Paquete para Servicio Especial, por sus siglas en inglés) / Unidad Policial para Acatamiento de la Ley de 1993, un Coupé Compacto 3 Puertas 2+2 Notchback Pony Car / Muscle Car / Auto de Policía Liviano, el cual representa el último modelo de esta clase producido sobre la plataforma Fox-body.
Ahora, este vehículo policivo de baja producción, del cual alrededor de 15.000 unidades fueron fabricadas en total, entre 1982 y 1993, no empezó como una unidad SSP (Paquete para Servicio Especial, no confundir con el Paquete para Servicio Severo, otra opción con especificaciones diferentes para aplicaciones de trabajo pesado); empezó como un Mustang LX 5.0 regular, con algunos accesorios y modificaciones, con el fin de atraer a la Patrulla de Autopistas de California (CHP, por sus siglas en inglés).
Unas pocas unidades de demostración fueron provistas por Ford a la CHP y fueron probadas como vehículos de alta velocidad, clase para hacer cumplir la ley; estas unidades fueron despojados de algunas de las características encontradas en sus contrapartes de calle, ahorrando algo de peso y mejorando la eficiencia en el uso de combustible, varios accesorios para este uso específico fueron testeados también y el resultado fue precisamente el SSP.
Los Mustangs SSP compartieron características exteriores en términos de diseño con sus pares de calle, introduciendo al menos 4 facelifts durante su existencia; debido a su confiabilidad, peso liviano y bajo precio inicial, estos Mustangs fueron ordenados por varios departamentos de policía en los Estados Unidos, ofreciendo diferentes configuraciones y accesorios en cada caso; con el tiempo llegaron a ser legendarios y todavía hay varios ejemplos, ya sea en servicio, restaurados en las manos de civiles o incluso convertidos en dragsters y son tan admirados hoy como fueron temidos durante su apogeo...
Cuando comencé a coleccionar carros de juguete en diecast hace 10 años, después de más o menos un año de comprar con alguna regularidad productos de Matchbox, tanto relativamente viejos como recientes; me tomé el tiempo de revisar y comparar sus características, no solo entre ellos, sino con productos similares de otras marcas, incluyendo desde luego Hot Wheels...
Luego y basado en la evidencia, concluí que la marca naranja de Mattel era más bien una "apuesta segura", cuando se trata de control de calidad; en consecuencia, decidí flexibilizar mis revisiones de control de calidad antes de la compra o crear una especie de "regla de excepción" tácita para Matchbox; pero no tomó mucho tiempo para darme cuenta que estaba equivocado con respecto a esa suposición y que debía chequear dos veces cualquier artículo para mi colección, especialmente aquellos fabricados por Mattel...
No hay tal cosa como un coleccionable "impecable", incluso marcas en la cima de esta industria tienen problemas de calidad en sus productos y cuando digo "en la cima", quiero decir en la cima de la calidad; Mattel no es una de esas marcas, en caso que te hayan lavado el cerebro para pensar así: solo está en la cima de las ventas, pero eso significa muy poco para nosotros, los coleccionistas, en términos de reputación, así que no esperas demasiado de este conglomerado, particularmente no de sus marcas de autos de juguete en diecast, Hot Wheels y Matchbox.
No obstante, ya que estas marcas han incrementado sustancialmente sus precios iniciales, a pesar que su calidad es tan inconsistente como antes o incluso peor, tú como coleccionista exiges más, no menos de sus productos y honestamente no esperaba un problema de calidad tan notable en un artículo de una línea en la categoría Adulta, donde el precio es en promedio cinco veces el de artículos de la Línea Principal (categoría Regular)...
Mi invitado para esta reseña pertenece a la Serie Best of Matchbox de 2016, Lanzamiento 1, una línea de la categoría Adulta, exclusiva para Toys ‘R’ Us en Estados Unidos, presentando 10 modelos; este artículo fue diseñado por Miguel López, ha tenido al menos 8 iteraciones para líneas en la categoría Regular (Línea Principal), excluyendo el introducido aquí.
Lo conseguí a través del mercado secundario, obviamente ya que vivo fuera de los Estados Unidos, con la ayuda de un amigo mío, colega coleccionista e importador / vendedor privado, hace más o menos 6 años; en ese momento, el aumento más bien excesivo en precios para estas líneas no era tan evidente como llegó a ser desde 2018 en adelante.
Este artículo ofrece carrocería en diecast y chasis en plástico negro, la configuración ya mencionada no es lo que esperas a este nivel de precio, quiero decir, Hot Wheels ofrece construcción completa en diecast (carrocería y chasis) por más o menos el mismo dinero, ya lo he dicho antes y Mattel parece estar muy cómoda con esta anomalía, que se convirtió en la norma para MBX desde 2012.
Este hecho perjudica los productos ofrecidos por Matchbox, porque no están compitiendo en igualdad de condiciones con los productos de su marca hermana Hot Wheels, ni hablar con productos de otras marcas: eso habla mucho de las preferencias de Mattel, con respecto a sus marcas de carros de juguete.
Algunas personas dirían, tratando de "justificar", en vano en mi caso, esta deficiencia, que para la Serie Best Of Matchbox, una bonita caja coleccionable en cartón, impresa a todo color, está incluida con el modelo; bueno, déjame explicar por qué este extra incluido NO justifica el precio inicial en este caso:
1. Una caja de cartón es sustancialemnte más barata de producir que un chasis en diecast y si tengo que escoger entre una caja coleccionable y una construcción completa en diecast, está ultima será mi elección como coleccionista.
2. En el pasado, Matchbox ofrecía una caja coleccionable con sus productos de Línea Principal y este es un producto de una categoría más alta, de una línea Adulta, notablemente más cara así que, ¿cuál es la excusa para esto?, ¿la inflación?, ¿en serio?
3. Otras marcas como Auto World, a pesar de ser de la categoría Premium, con réplicas a escala apropiadas en su portafolio (no autos de juguete), ofrece construcción completa en diecast, mucho mejor realismo, detalle y exactitud de escala, también una caja coleccionable en cartón en algunas Series, por un precio ligeramente más alto y Johnny Lightning, también una marca Premium, ofrece cajas de cartón coleccionables o incluso añade cajas de latón en algunas Series, a un modelo que ya ofrece construcción completa en diecast, por un precio ligeramente más alto también, luego, ¿¡cuál es la excusa de Mattel / Matchbox para justificar este sustancial costo extra, EH!?...
El trabajo de pintura para este coche de juguete fue hecho en azul oscuro con acabado Metalflake, complementado por tampos y/o calcomanías en blanco, naranja, negro y plateado, sobre los paneles laterales, el techo y la cola, los cuales son apropiados dentro de este nivel de precio, a diferencia de lo que fue mencionado anteriormente, pero añadí detalles en dorado, plateado, rojo y azul metalizados, para los faros frontales y la barra de luces en la parte superior.
Las proporciones están erradas, justo como esperas de un coche de juguete: mientras en términos de ancho, la escala sería 1:75, en términos de longitud, la escala sería 1:61, por eso es que el carro luce mucho más estrecho de lo que debería (supongo que los promotores de marca y aspirantes a coleccionistas, reclamarán "proporciones exactas" para este artículo de todas maneras).
Los interiores fueron trabajado en gris muy claro, con nivel de detalle decente, pero aquí es donde viene el problema de calidad: las ventanas ahumadas tiene áreas opacas, como si un solvente hubiera caído sobre ellas y esto le resta valor a la apariencia general del producto, es notable en las fotografías, especialmente en las ventanas traseras, pero aún más en persona y es muy decepcionante, así fue emsamblado y empacado, imitiendo el control de calidad respectivo.
Al menos los faros delanteros fueron incluidos en el molde de las ventanas y eso es un detalle muy agradable; las ruedas multiparte Ultra Max presentan diseño de rimes 6 Split Spokes en negro, con cubos cromados, que luce fantástico en este modelo y fue hecho en Tailandia...

Coupes and coupe sports cars are not a common choice in law enforcement / police vehicles in United States and many other countries worldwide, sedans or saloons are preferred by far for police duties and there are practical reasons for that, which doesn’t mean that other typologies of vehicles have not been part of the arsenal of these allegedly civilian corps...
Lately for instance, mid-size and large SUVs are becoming an increasingly common view, but there have been vehicles like: pickups, vans, station / state wagons, jeeps, off-roads, buses, tow trucks, light, medium and heavy duty trucks...
The list doesn’t end there because it includes as well: helicopters, barges, high speed boats, motorcycles, armored trucks (the latter, a kind of vehicles that puts the term "civilian corps" in question, when it comes to police: military police would be more accurate and that fact has some worrying implications, that people easily overlook) and then you have some of the most outrageous super and hyper sports cars seen in Dubai...
Yet, there have been a good amount of police patrols in the form of coupes, more specifically Muscle Cars and other sports cars, developed for the market of United States, most of them have been offered in limited editions and for short periods, making them not so easy to find.
My guest for this publication is one of those not so usual law enforcement vehicles and a model that’s quite interesting: the 1993 Ford Mustang LX SSP 5.0 (Special Service Package) / Law Enforcement Police Unit, a Compact 3-Door 2+2 Notchback Coupe Pony Car / Muscle Car / Lightweight Police Car, which represents the last model of this kind produced on the Fox-body platform.
Now, this low production police vehicle, of which around 15,000 units where manufactured in total, between 1982 and 1993, didn’t start as a SSP unit (Special Service Package, not to be confused with the Severe Service Package, another option with different specifications for heavy duty applications); it started as a regular Mustang LX 5.0, with some accessories and modifications, in order to attract the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
A few demo units were provided by Ford to the CHP and they were tested as high-speed, enforcement-class vehicles; these units were stripped off of some of the features and accessories found in their street counterparts, saving some weight and improving fuel efficiency, several accessories for this specific use were tested as well and the result was precisely the SSP.
The SSP Mustangs shared exterior features in terms of design with their street peers, introducing at least 4 facelifts during its existence; due to its reliability, light weight and low asking price, these Mustangs were ordered by several police departments in United States, offering different configurations and accessories in each case; over time they became legendary and there are still several examples, either in duty, restored in the hands of civilians or even converted in dragsters and they are as admired today as they were feared during their heyday...
When I started to collect diecast toy cars 10 years ago, after pretty much a year of buying with some regularity products by Matchbox, both relatively old and recent; I took my time to check out and compare their features, not only between them, but with similar products by other brands, including of course Hot Wheels...
Then and based on the evidence, I concluded that the orange brand of Mattel was rather a "sure bet", when it comes to quality control; accordingly, I decided to make more flexible my quality control checks before purchase or to create a sort of tacit "exception rule" for Matchbox; but it didn’t take too much time to realize that I was wrong regarding this assumption and that I should double-check any item for my collection, specially those manufactured by Mattel...
There is no such thing as a "flawless" collectible, even brands at the top of this industry have quality issues in their products and when I say "top", I mean top quality; Mattel is not one of these brands, in case you were brainwashed to think so: it’s only at the top of sales, but that means very little for us, the collectors, in terms of reputation, so you don’t expect too much from this conglomerate, particularly not from its diecast toy cars brands, Hot Wheels and Matchbox.
Nonetheless, since these brands have increased substantially their asking prices, despite their quality is as inconsistent as before or even worse, you as collector demand more, not less from its products and honestly I didn’t expect such a noticeable quality issue in an item from a line in the Adult category, where the price is in average five times that of items from the Mainline (Regular category)...
My guest for this review belongs to the 2016 Best of Matchbox Series, Release 1, a line from the Adult category, exclusive for Toys ‘R’ Us in United States, featuring 10 models; this item was designed by Miguel López, it has had at least 8 iterations for lines in the Regular category (Mainline), excluding the one introduced here.
I got it through the secondary market, obviously since I live outside United States, with the help of a friend of mine, fellow collector and importer / private seller, pretty much 6 years ago; at that moment, the rather excessive increase in prices for these lines was not as evident as it became since 2018 onwards.
This item offers diecast body and black plastic chassis, the configuration already mentioned is not what you expect at this price level, I mean, Hot Wheels offers full diecast construction (body and chassis) for pretty much the same money, I have said it before and Mattel seems to be very comfortable with this anomaly, that became the norm for MBX since 2012.
This fact harms the products offered by Matchbox, because they are not competing in equal conditions with the products of its sister brand Hot Wheels, let alone with products by other brands: that speaks loads about the preferences of Mattel, regarding its toy cars brands.
Some people would say, trying to "justify", to no avail in my case, this deficiency, that for the Best Of Matchbox Series, a nice cardboard collectible box, printed in full color, is included with the model; well, let me explain why this extra included does NOT justify the asking price in this case:
1. A cardboard box is substantially cheaper to produce than a diecast chassis and if I have to choose between a collectible box and a full diecast construction, the latter will be my choice as collector.
2. In the past, Matchbox offered a collectible box with its Mainline products and this is a product from a higher category, from an Adult line, noticeably more expensive so, what’s the excuse for this?, inflation?, really?
3. Other brands like Auto World, despite being from the Premium category, with proper scale replicas in its portfolio (not toy cars), offer full diecast construction, much better realism, detail and scale accuracy, also a collectible box in cardboard for some Series, for a price slightly higher and Johnny Lightning, also a Premium brand, offers cardboard collectible boxes or even adds tin boxes in some Series, to a model already offering full diecast construction, for a slightly higher price too, so, what’s the excuse of Mattel / Matchbox to justify the substantial extra cost, HUH!?...
The paint job for this toy car was made in dark blue with Metalflake finishing, complemented by tampos and/or decals in white, orange, black and silver, on the side panels, the roof and the tail, which are appropriate within this price level, unlike what was mentioned above, but I added details in metallic golden, silver, red and blue, for the head lights and the light bar on top.
The proportions are wrong, just like you expect from a toy car: while in terms of width, the scale would be 1:75, in terms of length, the scale would be 1:61, that’s why the car looks way narrower than it should (I guess that brand promoters and collectors wannabe, will claim "spot-on proportions" for this item anyway).
The interiors were worked in very light gray, with a decent level of detail, but here is where the quality issue comes: the smoked windows have opaque areas, as if a solvent had fallen on them and it detracts from the overall appearance of the product, it’s noticeable in the pictures, specially in the rear windows, but even more in the flesh and it’s very disappointing, that way it was assembled and packed up, omitting the respective quality control.
At least the head lights were included in the mold of the windows and that’s a very nice detail; the multipart Ultra Max wheels feature 6 Split Spokes rims design in black, with chrome hubs, that looks fantastic in this model and it was made in Thailand...
