So, do you think it’s startling, even bloodcurdling to drive a car stuffed with an engine able to produce ridiculously high amounts of power, in front of thousands of viewers?...
What about a car stuffed with two engines like that, HUH?...
As car enthusiast, you could have several definitions about what’s a "wild car" and car makers from diverse provenances have brought us countless examples of quick and powerful vehicles, with an enviable performance from factory...
And then, you have the aftermarket, a segment that probably is almost as old as the automotive industry itself, but since there is no such thing as a history of the auto parts sector, you can only theorize about it.
However, it’s not a secret that engineers, designers, mechanics and even operators that once worked for a car manufacturer, later, with the experience and knowledge acquired, started their own projects and some of them became highly respected independent companies, while others became part of the high performance, special operations or motorsport divisions of their former employers.
The motor racing, on the other hand, has given a particularly strong impulse to the aftermarket (as well as to the car manufacturers) and due to this synergy between them, the latter is able to transform something wild in something scandalous.
George Hurst, a car lover or "garage rat" and the company he founded with his associate Bill Campbell, an engineer: Hurst Shifters (formerly known as Hurst Performance and founded as Hurst-Campbell), have been illustrious presences in many forms of competitions.
From the establishment of land speed records in the Boneville salt flat, to the Indy Car or the Northeast Off-Road Adventures (NORA) events, Hurst became a name associated with performance, synonyms to be precise, but it was in the Drag Racing where this brand excels among other aftermarket companies.
George Hurst was a man incredibly talented and innovative, a true genius of marketing and the mind behind two of the most remembered and hallucinatory exhibition cars ever created: the 1968 Hemi Under Glass (introduced in a previous publication) and my guest for this review, the 1967 Hairy Olds.
This monstrosity was very, very loosely based on a ’66 Olds 442 and for the next year, received new sheet metal to look like a 1967 Oldsmobile 442 Holiday Coupe, but that was the only affinity with the respective intermediate Muscle Car.
The vehicle was stripped to the bone and built around a full tube frame, so far, nothing too different to the "standard" dragster and then you have one of the creepiest combination for a car of this kind: not one but two blown fuel-injected 425 cu in, 7.0 L, Oldsmobile engines, each one provided with a Cragar Equipment-Modified 6-71 GMC Supercharger and mated to twin Turbo 400 automatic transmissions combined with two Toronado front-wheel-drive transaxles, to create a quite atypical 4-wheel drive hairy beast, able to produce more than 5,000 hp and a huge cloud of smoke, in the hands of the audacious pilot Joe Schubeck!...
When I was a kid and enjoyed each time I received as gift a toy car, just because I always loved cars, what I really longed for in these small gems was realism, because the more real looked the car for me, the more I felt like a "giant" playing with actual cars...
I’m fully aware of how naive it sounds, but it’s absolutely normal and coherent in the mind of a child and that was exactly my perception in the games I used to play alone or with my friends...
I was not aware of things like car manufacturers, diecast brands and more than anything, I really didn’t care about the subject of scales...
Obviously, I was a kid, but some things have not changed at all: today the issue of the scale is in fact the least of my concerns when I want to get a diecast model for my collection and while other collectors are obsessed with certain scale, I’m obsessed with realism and quality instead...
That’s why it was natural for me to fell in love with Johnny Lightning, since the first time I got a handful of its models and my admiration by this brand remains immutable, even after being introduced to other brands in the Deluxe and Premium segments...
I assumed, at first sight, that Johnny Lightning was just another brand working in the segment of the 1:64 scale, but when I put side by side one of its models with models by other brands like M2 Machines, Auto World, Kyosho, Greenlight or Tomica Limited Vintage, I noticed the difference in size.
Instead of the "normal" reaction of disappointment felt by some collectors, my reaction was of fascination, just because Johnny Lightning achieves the same or even greater level of realism in smaller scales !!!...
My guest for this review belongs to the Playing Mantis era, it’s an old example of the usual quality during the first revival of Johnny Lightning, thanks to the optimum management of Thomas Lowe and it’s part of the ShowStoppers! - Real Wheels Series, that features eight ultra popular exhibition cars.
It was a pretty rare finding, more than 5 years ago, in a collectibles store inside a small mall, the kind of places you wouldn’t visit unless you were looking for other kind of stuff, but I learned early in this hobby to take my chances.
It came inside a beautiful, big and thick card, printed in full color, that features a picture of the actual vehicle in front, a design trait in this line; it has full diecast construction, the chassis includes 16 zoomies (8 for each engine), received a polished finishing and it was lacquered as well, the proportion is excellent and the level of detail is amazing everywhere.
The paint job was made in metallic golden and glossy black, corporate colors of Hurst that look fantastic here, as well as they looked in the actual car; the decoration includes tampos and/or decals for the front grille, front, signal and tail lights, front and rear bumpers and a lot of sponsors logos, colorful and perfectly readable despite their tiny size.
The interiors in black include the safety cage and while there is no openable hood, the addition of plastic inserts for the two engines is more than satisfying; the wheels are multipart, the rims design with chrome finishing is the one used for rear wheels only in dragsters made by JL, but they are great combined with slick type rubber tires, that received Goodyear white tampos; it includes as a bonus a Wheelie-Stand that can work for most 1:64 or similar scale models and it was made in China...
Prv 16:1-7 "The preparations of the heart in man, and the answer of the tongue, is from the LORD. All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes; but the LORD weigheth the spirits. Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established. The LORD hath made all things for Himself: yea, even the wicked for the day of evil. Every one that is proud in heart is an abomination to the LORD: though hand join in hand, he shall not be unpunished. By mercy and truth iniquity is purged: and by the fear of the LORD men depart from evil. When a man's ways please the LORD, HE maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him."

The pinnacle of Muscle Cars, made by Oldsmobile, is here again...
Just like other mythical american high performance cars of the 60s, it began as a option package, mainly because of the internal GM policy for veto the combination of big engines with medium size platforms...
Once the veto was removed, the harvest of Muscle Cars offered by GM was finally in the hands of the yearning buyers of these beasts (already spurred by the option packages)...
By the end of the 60s, this market was kinda saturated, which in this case is not a drawback at all, but the carmakers had to strive much more to allure the elusive car enthusiasts.
With the hatching of delightful Muscle Cars, the buyers should have a hard time, when it came to choose the best deal, bearing in mind that in this decade, a rather limited budget was the norm.
However, Oldsmobile, being aware of the "needy customers", was working hard to introduce something that would make the decision easier (charming, aren’t they?).
The 1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass 442 W-30 Holiday (Hardtop) Coupe was not merely a nice but empty shell, like most of the wannabes made recently with a pathetic tag of "high performance", NO!...
It was made to fulfill all the expectations, with a dose of elegance others just cannot achieve even if they try hard.
While most of brands / carmakers were stripping their vehicles of any "superfluous amenity", Oldsmobile put a lot of extras in their 442; in the end, it was virtually the best machine for your hard earned money!...
First, we have the terrific body design with a fastback configuration, the side panels are rather clean, but the rear mudguards have a nice protuberance, giving the 442 a sturdier appearance.
All the chrome trims were displaced to the front and tail, where the work is just top notch (I think is the best in all the Muscle Car universe, along with the 1968 Pontiac GTO), 18 exterior / 5 interior colors were available and even a rear spoiler was optional.
Everything conspires in order to graft the beast character in this beauty, because the W30 package had: the W25 option with a fiberglass hood including two large air inlets and a pair of ornamental hood tie-down fully functional, a performance tuned Rochester Quadrajet 4 barrels carburetor, high performance cams, lightweight free-flow aluminum intake manifold, high performance cylinder heads and exhaust manifolds, differential with aluminum components, Anti-Spin axle, front disc brakes, plastic inner fender liners and less sound deadener so, the total weight was notoriously lighter than in the previous models.
The heart beating in the Cutlass 442 was an outrageous 455 cu in, 7.4 L, V8 Olds engine, rated very conservatively at 370 hp (in your dreams! =PPPPP), attached either to a Hurst-managed 4 speed manual transmission (wide or close ratio options) or a performance calibrated Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 3 speed transmission with a Hurst Dual-Gate shifter...
Man, this car is not for the faint of heart and Olds dared to offer a laundry list of additional amenities for their hardcore fans!...
In one of my rather sporadic hunts for diecast (my budget hardly allows me to buy collectibles every now and then), I found this Hot Wheels rendition of a great favorite for me.
It belongs to the Hall of Fame Series (Greatest Rides Subseries) and so far, I managed to get three items from this Series (two published previously: a 1971 Plymouth GTX and a 1968 Mini Cooper S Custom).
The presentation for this Adult Series is a clamshell and includes a fine trading card printed in full color, with glossy finishing in the front side, featuring a picture of the actual car and a grayscale print over an uncoated surface in the back side, featuring a short review about the model (a collectible in itself).
The scale replica has a good level of detail, as you could expect in this level of price, but lack of the right proportion, since it must be a bit wider and the fenders along with the wheels look humongous, specially compared with the quite more accurate M2Machines scale replica (that you can check here) , which I included in the photo shoot.
The paint job / tampos, on the other hand, are nicely done and give a touch of realism to the piece, I have no complaint about that and looking at all the versions made on this model, these are by far the best available.
It has diecast body with plastic chrome chassis, the latter is very simplistic and, believe it or not, the main reason (along with the model itself) that made me choose it, was the quite unusual wheels type.
It deserves a special mention, just because is the only model i have seen with them and they are not even classified among the rest of wheels types available for Hot Wheels.
I would call them "N66 Type" inasmuch as it was the reference of one of the rim options for the 442 W30 in the real life; these are multipart with plastic low profile tires and chrome rims fairly detailed; finally, the interiors are black and it was made in Malaysia...
2 Pet 1: 16-18 "For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our LORD JESUS CHRIST, but were eyewitnesses of HIS Majesty. For HE received from GOD the Father honor and glory, when there came such a Voice to HIM from the excellent glory: this is MY Beloved SON, in whom I am well pleased. And this Voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with HIM in the holy mount."

There are some analysts of the american car industry, who claim that Oldsmobile spent its last two decades of existence, squandering its great automotive legacy...
Well, I think that a company, of any kind, is not willing consciously to bury itself, but obviously there are people who could make wrong decisions in these business and hence, condemn a brand or a company to extinction...
Let’s be honest, a good reputation is built with sound decisions and good products, in that order, and the human factor is essential...
I’m pretty sure, there were people making right decisions and manufacturing a good product, when the 1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass 442 W-30 Holiday (Hardtop) Coupe was released.
Oldsmobile was a brand of tradition, it produced memorable and desirable world class automobiles, you could not expect less from the oldest carmaker in the United States.
It was able to cater the highly demanding mature segment of the market so, it had a lot of experience into create quality and stylish vehicles.
The tradition and excellence were inherent to this brand and actually, most of the people related an Oldsmobile with "the car of your father", so much than a "not your father’s Oldsmobile" marketing campaign was necessary, in order to reach younger buyers and revamp its image...
But, you don’t need to fix what is already fine and Oldsmobile was doing a great job being loyal to its roots.
Nevertheless, what many people don’t know is that this brand provided V8 engines, with outstanding performance, way before than Pontiac or Chevrolet.
To be precise, Oldsmobile was responsible for the creation of the first mass production overhead valve (OHV) V8 in 1949, and it was marketed as the Rocket V8...
This engine was so groundbreaking that we could not even consider the existence of the Muscle Cars’ golden era without it!...
Despite its background, Oldsmobile had a direct role in this legendary segment of the market, producing some of the most remarkable Muscle Cars ever created, but given that there will be other publication on this astonishing and exquisite beast, you should be patient to know more about it...
I think this is the penultimate diecast which was part of the gifts for my birthday in 2011 and a lot of scale models have debuted in this blog since that time...
I guess you already know (I mean, my regular visitors and fans) that I’m not particularly trenchant into publish a collectible at the very moment i get it, just because I’m a labyrinthine collector and blogger.
Also, this is a hobby for me and that means: something pleasurable, which lacks of imperative compromises and deadlines...
Part of such pleasure, is take time to choose among the delicacies available in this wide market of the diecast scale replicas.
I had a hard time looking for it carefully (albeit it was a gift, the giver let me pick what i wanted, which was a sound decision!), but it was worth...
Being a M2 Machines diecast, my expectations were fulfilled.
This Olds 442 belongs to the Detroit Muscle Series, which includes several Muscle Cars, mainly from the Golden Era, featuring the original factory color schemes and general appearance, also it comes packed in clamshell.
The model has the exceptional level of detail made famous by this brand.
It has diecast body and chassis (in this case, the chassis was painted in black), the paint job in Rally Red is part of the 19 options of body colors available for the actual car and the tampos/decals are fantastic.
The front and rear bumpers are separate pieces and feature plastic inserts for the lights.
There is a great job on the black interiors and engine, which include some touches of paint.
It offers openable hood and doors, also the latter include plastic inserts for the complete windows (a quite unusual feature indeed).
The multipart wheels with red rims and silver tampos simulating the standard dog dish hubcaps and rubber tires with white Goodyear Poly Glas tampos, along with the classic and wonderful display base, make as a whole of this diecast replica an ideal collectible...
2 Kin 8:9-13 "So Hazael went to meet Elisha, and took a present with him, even of every good thing of Damascus, forty camels' burden, and came and stood before Elisha, and said: thy son Ben-hadad king of Syria hath sent me to thee, saying: shall I recover of this disease? And Elisha said unto him: go, say unto him, thou mayest certainly recover: howbeit the LORD hath showed me that he shall surely die. And Elisha settled his countenance steadfastly, until Hazael was ashamed: and the man of GOD wept. And Hazael said: why weepeth my lord? And Elisha answered: because I know the evil that thou wilt do unto the children of Israel: their strongholds wilt thou set on fire, and their young men wilt thou slay with the sword, and wilt dash their children, and rip up their women with child. And Hazael said: but what, is thy servant, a dog, that he should do this great thing? And Elisha answered: the LORD hath showed me that thou shalt be king over Syria."

Ambos modelos publicados pertenecen a líneas Adultas (The Hot Ones y Boulevard) y presentan carrocería y chasis en diecast.

The joint ventures are often, interesting experiments of sinergy with great results which are, in fact, more than the sum of the parts.
Right now, I remember a quite atypical sample of these joint ventures, something you would not expect, not even in your wildest dreams...
I’m talking about an unprecedented collaboration between General Motors and Pininfarina...
As weird as it sounds, this really happened and the outcome was the exquisite 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Rondine which unfortunately, for the automotive industry, never exceeded the concept car stage, but it debuted in the Paris Auto Show.
However, I will not talk about the sadly frustrated car projects from the remote past, but about an extremely good alliance between two brands / companies of the car world: Oldsmobile and Hurst Performance Inc.
Oldsmobile, as the american car enthusiasts already know, was removed from the General Motors portfolio, but while it was in force, its partnership with Hurst was memorable.
Since 1968, the joint venture between Olds and Hurst was seen, not unfrequently, and those cars are highly coveted by collectors.
The Oldsmobile 442, also known as Cutlass Supreme, was the base model to create this incredible high performance stallion and the first models produced were basically Muscle Cars improved markedly.
Hurst is an american company, specialized in manufacturing automotive aftermarket parts, mainly for the original Muscle Cars since 1958.
It has a well-deserved reputation among the high performance cars lovers and obviously, they know exactly how to make your already great car, something unforgettable.
These limited edition vehicles could go unnoticed, if not for the fact that they feature a special and distinctive color scheme, which combines five colors: golden, silver, black, white and red (the corporate colors of Hurst Performance Inc.).
The last run of these exclusive models was released in 1983-1984 and as it could be expected, they became instant classics.
It was the 15th Anniversary edition and the bodywork screams style and performance; its design is boxy with sharp edges, following the trend of that time, but extremely appealing and muscular.
The base model was a Cutlass Supreme Coupe, featuring rear-wheel drive, unlike its "brother": the Cutlass Ciera with front-wheel drive.
The 1984 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Coupe Hurst (Hurst Olds) never looked this good!...
It was "dressed" with a paint job in glossy black combined with silver in the rocker panels and strategic accents in red; it has a radical Lightning Rods shifter by Hurst, a power bulge hood, a rear spoiler, 15" chromed wheels, dual exhaust with rumbling mufflers, a new Hurst / Olds emblem and even the option of T-Top was available.
The power came from a modified Oldsmobile 307 CID, V8 engine, helped by a Rochester Quadrajet carburetor and although the initial production planned for 1983 was 2,500 units, due to the strong demand, finally 3,500 units were made...
But that was not enough and for 1984 other 3,500 units were produced, featuring a reversed color scheme with silver as the main color and glossy black for the rocker panels...
One of these monsters fully loaded marked in the cash register US$19,500, that’s a whole bargain!...
Since I love these boxy cars from the 80s, a 1984 Hurst / Olds is MUST in my garage and I’m glad to introduce not one but two scale models by Hot Wheels.
This is one of the very recent casts by HW that makes me sigh, it was designed by Brendon Vetuskey (GOD bless him!) and released in 2012.
Both models published belong to Adult lines (The Hot Ones and Boulevard) and feature diecast body and chassis.
The level of detail and paint job / tampos are very good and the two color schemes available for the actual car, were nicely represented; the model from The Hot Ones Series has the 1984 color scheme, while the model from the Boulevard Series has the 1983 color scheme with a few modifications / additions.
Both have interiors in burgundy, matching the color of the actual vehicle, but while the model from The Hot Ones Series has the Basic Wheel / Black Wall plastic wheels from the vintage lines, the model from the Boulevard Series have Real Riders rubber tires with red lines and Larry Wood 5 Spoke Wheels chrome.
It took me some time to get this pair of beauties, but i am very pleased, the wait was worth!...
Mar 8:34-38 "And when HE (JESUS CHRIST) had called the people unto Him with His disciples also, HE said unto them: whosoever will come after ME, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for My Sake and the Gospel's, the same shall save it. For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of ME and of My Words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the SON OF MAN be ashamed, when HE cometh in the Glory of HIS Father with the holy angels."
