ENGLISH So, do you think it’s startling, even bloodcurdling to drive a car stuffed with an engine able to produce ridiculously high amounts of power, in front of thousands of viewers?...
What about a car stuffed with two engines like that, HUH?...
As car enthusiast, you could have several definitions about what’s a "wild car" and car makers from diverse provenances have brought us countless examples of quick and powerful vehicles, with an enviable performance from factory...
And then, you have the aftermarket, a segment that probably is almost as old as the automotive industry itself, but since there is no such thing as a history of the auto parts sector, you can only theorize about it.
However, it’s not a secret that engineers, designers, mechanics and even operators that once worked for a car manufacturer, later, with the experience and knowledge acquired, started their own projects and some of them became highly respected independent companies, while others became part of the high performance, special operations or motorsport divisions of their former employers.
The motor racing, on the other hand, has given a particularly strong impulse to the aftermarket (as well as to the car manufacturers) and due to this synergy between them, the latter is able to transform something wild in something scandalous.
George Hurst, a car lover or "garage rat" and the company he founded with his associate Bill Campbell, an engineer: Hurst Shifters (formerly known as Hurst Performance and founded as Hurst-Campbell), have been illustrious presences in many forms of competitions.
From the establishment of land speed records in the Boneville salt flat, to the Indy Car or the Northeast Off-Road Adventures (NORA) events, Hurst became a name associated with performance, synonyms to be precise, but it was in the Drag Racing where this brand excels among other aftermarket companies.
George Hurst was a man incredibly talented and innovative, a true genius of marketing and the mind behind two of the most remembered and hallucinatory exhibition cars ever created: the 1968 Hemi Under Glass (introduced in a previous publication) and my guest for this review, the 1967 Hairy Olds.
This monstrosity was very, very loosely based on a ’66 Olds 442 and for the next year, received new sheet metal to look like a 1967 Oldsmobile 442 Holiday Coupe, but that was the only affinity with the respective intermediate Muscle Car.
The vehicle was stripped to the bone and built around a full tube frame, so far, nothing too different to the "standard" dragster and then you have one of the creepiest combination for a car of this kind: not one but two blown fuel-injected 425 cu in, 7.0 L, Oldsmobile engines, each one provided with a Cragar Equipment-Modified 6-71 GMC Supercharger and mated to twin Turbo 400 automatic transmissions combined with two Toronado front-wheel-drive transaxles, to create a quite atypical 4-wheel drive hairy beast, able to produce more than 5,000 hp and a huge cloud of smoke, in the hands of the audacious pilot Joe Schubeck!...
When I was a kid and enjoyed each time I received as gift a toy car, just because I always loved cars, what I really longed for in these small gems was realism, because the more real looked the car for me, the more I felt like a "giant" playing with actual cars...
I’m fully aware of how naive it sounds, but it’s absolutely normal and coherent in the mind of a child and that was exactly my perception in the games I used to play alone or with my friends...
I was not aware of things like car manufacturers, diecast brands and more than anything, I really didn’t care about the subject of scales...
Obviously, I was a kid, but some things have not changed at all: today the issue of the scale is in fact the least of my concerns when I want to get a diecast model for my collection and while other collectors are obsessed with certain scale, I’m obsessed with realism and quality instead...
That’s why it was natural for me to fell in love with Johnny Lightning, since the first time I got a handful of its models and my admiration by this brand remains immutable, even after being introduced to other brands in the Deluxe and Premium segments...
I assumed, at first sight, that Johnny Lightning was just another brand working in the segment of the 1:64 scale, but when I put side by side one of its models with models by other brands like M2 Machines, Auto World, Kyosho, Greenlight or Tomica Limited Vintage, I noticed the difference in size.
Instead of the "normal" reaction of disappointment felt by some collectors, my reaction was of fascination, just because Johnny Lightning achieves the same or even greater level of realism in smaller scales !!!...
My guest for this review belongs to the Playing Mantis era, it’s an old example of the usual quality during the first revival of Johnny Lightning, thanks to the optimum management of Thomas Lowe and it’s part of the ShowStoppers! - Real Wheels Series, that features eight ultra popular exhibition cars.
It was a pretty rare finding, more than 5 years ago, in a collectibles store inside a small mall, the kind of places you wouldn’t visit unless you were looking for other kind of stuff, but I learned early in this hobby to take my chances.
It came inside a beautiful, big and thick card, printed in full color, that features a picture of the actual vehicle in front, a design trait in this line; it has full diecast construction, the chassis includes 16 zoomies (8 for each engine), received a polished finishing and it was lacquered as well, the proportion is excellent and the level of detail is amazing everywhere.
The paint job was made in metallic golden and glossy black, corporate colors of Hurst that look fantastic here, as well as they looked in the actual car; the decoration includes tampos and/or decals for the front grille, front, signal and tail lights, front and rear bumpers and a lot of sponsors logos, colorful and perfectly readable despite their tiny size.
The interiors in black include the safety cage and while there is no openable hood, the addition of plastic inserts for the two engines is more than satisfying; the wheels are multipart, the rims design with chrome finishing is the one used for rear wheels only in dragsters made by JL, but they are great combined with slick type rubber tires, that received Goodyear white tampos; it includes as a bonus a Wheelie-Stand that can work for most 1:64 or similar scale models and it was made in China...
Prv 16:1-7 "The preparations of the heart in man, and the answer of the tongue, is from the LORD. All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes; but the LORD weigheth the spirits. Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established. The LORD hath made all things for Himself: yea, even the wicked for the day of evil. Every one that is proud in heart is an abomination to the LORD: though hand join in hand, he shall not be unpunished. By mercy and truth iniquity is purged: and by the fear of the LORD men depart from evil. When a man's ways please the LORD, HE maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him."
The engine is so powerful and big to a point it's protruding out from the bonnet. Maybe in the past, car enthusiasts love to feel the vibrations and hear the sound of power. Anyway, JL's diecast is as good as always just by the details. The colour is also well match and resembles a gold bar from a distance. Btw, is the acrylic used by you for the car wheelie pose from the toy or your own customization?
This beast is really, really scary to drive; well, in this case, the testimony of the official pilot: Joe Schubeck, is that he hardly managed to keep it on the track due to poor visibility (all four wheels were smoking down the length of the race track), the monstrous power available and the fact that most controls inside the cabin were duplicated, in order to control both engines, also, the pilot should be ambidextrous !!!... Regarding you question pal, the wheelie stand is included with each model of these series as a collectible bonus, I don’t have the skills to built one of my own, at least not in clear plastic, HEHE... =D
Damn it!!! another great looking car from JL!!! I love this one very much. That gold and black color scheme is nice. By the way, what is that thing on top of the engine hood for? is it some sort of turbo charger or something to make the car faster?
Well the "device" you’re mentioning is the hood scoop air intake of the supercharger, it helps the engine to "breath" better, taking more air to improve the air-fuel-spark mix and indeed generating more power, which will make the car faster, for sure... This particular model has two of them, because it features two engines and with over 5,000 hp available, you could say it goes from point A to point B faster than average, if you are willing to put your life at stake !!!... =OOOOO

I’m a professional graphic designer and a restful collector, but above all: I’m someone who doesn’t take for granted anything, just because someone else says so. I think this hobby goes way beyond buying stuff here and there: anybody with money can buy collectibles, but not anybody becomes collector by doing so. I think as well that this hobby is, more than anything, about knowledge, about making sense of what happens around us and just like any other kind of knowledge, if it’s devoid of ethics, is worthless. I like to address topics around collectionism, including, but not limited to: history, industry, forums, groups, collectors, distributors, sellers, etc. I’m fully aware that criticism is essential for our hobby: everything is susceptible of improvement and we the collectors demand quality, but the industry around it doesn’t necessarily shares that vision. After all, well-targeted criticism always helps to detect failures and correct them, it’s like critical thinking: it helps you see things as they really are and not just as how they are presented to you. If you are someone who likes to look beyond the surface, welcome, if that is not the case, continue at your own risk...
