2001 Acura Integra GS-R Customized LHD (Left Hand Drive) American Specs - Compact 2-Door 2-Seater Liftback Coupe Sports Car - 2016 Night Burnerz Series 9/10 - 89/250 Diecast Scale 1:65 by Hot Wheels

There was an idea printed in my mind about the automotive products that certain brands offer for international markets and it was that they were just rebadged vehicles, featuring too many similarities with their original / local counterparts, to even consider them different models on their own right...

And it’s not an unfounded idea, in fact, when car manufacturers have to face the challenge of expanding to other markets, specially in times of crises (and you already know that we have had many artificial crises happening one after another, particularly since the last century), they take a model with potential appeal and put maybe a different badge somewhere, in order to export it...

Usually the budget is not as generous as they would like, so car manufacturers resort to a few cosmetic modifications of the body or facelifts, to make the car look kind of "novel" regarding the original / local model taken as a basis and that’s it.

But sometimes, when budget is not a serious constrain, these same car manufacturers develop more substantial changes in the body design, a different work on interiors or even improvements in performance (depending on what is allowed by the regulations in the destination country) and yeah, they also throw some new and fancy badge to complete the product for export.

The latter probably is the case with my guest for this publication: the 2001 Acura Integra GS-R (Customized), a Compact 2-Door 2-Seater Liftback Coupe Sports Car, that was developed mainly with the market of United States in mind, as all the products in the Acura catalog, albeit it has been marketed or imported also to other countries.

The successor of the Quint, that was one of the first models offered under the Acura brand, along with the Legend, was basically a slightly more luxurious version of its Honda counterpart: average consumers in the North American market have a weakness for high performance cars that offer comfort and a certain dose of luxury on top of that.

In point of fact, those who love performance over comfort in the Northamerican market are a minority, it’s not only a matter of regulations, speaking of which, the stricter and somewhat exaggerated regulations particularly in United States, punish noticeably performance: that’s why the JDM versions of nippon models offer better performance figures and less luxury features in general terms than their USDM counterparts.

So as I have been learning in my journey through this hobby, when it comes to car brands developed for a certain market, United States in this case, is not always is a matter of a slight facelift and a new badge after all, besides, this entry level pocket rocket offered by Acura had been growing in the affections of many car enthusiasts, despite its quirks...

Since I started to show interest in Asian cars, particularly those from Japan, I have been adding different examples of vehicles from this provenance and following my philosophy of "variety above all", I have not limited myself to a particular typology, car brand or diecast manufacturer...

But this interest for Asian vehicles didn’t start with toy cars by Hot Wheels, NO; scale replicas by Muscle Machines (of which you can read here) were responsible for igniting the flame of appreciation for the Asian automotive world, followed later by Johnny Lightning and Kyosho, even Hasbro was instrumental in that sense.

I know that the marketing department at Hot Wheels and brand promoters out there want to award all the credit for the positioning of the Asian car culture in the mainstream of the diecast industry, to the blue brand of Mattel (they are so predictable and fallacious!).

However, it was the consistent effort of other brands of diecast models and the popular culture, of course, what put the Asian automotive scene in the spotlight, years before it were anything for the brand of the flaming logo and we the collectors know that very well.

What can be awarded to Hot Wheels, to be fair, is that this brand popularized and consolidated the Asian car culture in the mind of buyers and additionally it allowed us, the collectors, to have one more option to consider, when it comes to toy cars, albeit in my case, this option is no longer appealing...

I’m introducing in this review another model developed by the noted and sadly deceased Ryu Asada: the ’01 Acura Integra GS-R, in a moderately customized version that features an interesting wide-body kit and curiously, also the front fascia that was more popular in the Japanese market, with elongated headlights, instead of the 4 round front lights that were more popular in the North American market...

The toy car has an appropriate level of detail, it’s the debut of this model for the 2016 Night Burnerz Series, it was also offered in white for that year, it has had at least 10 iterations, all of them for lines of the Regular category.

I got it through the primary market, in a local retail chain store; it has diecast body and dark silver plastic chassis; the paint job was made in plain reddish yellow (a bit darker than in the actual car), complemented by a few tampos and/or decals for the headlights and tail lights, I added painted touches for the headlights, tail lights and the Acura insignia on the top of the tail.

The interiors were worked in black, with the typical basic level of detail, the windows are smoked and a bit too thick, the plastic wheels feature Open Hole 5 Spokes rims design in black, with chrome lip and it was made in Malaysia...

Act 19:11-16 "And GOD wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul: So that from his body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them. Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the LORD JESUS, saying: We adjure you by JESUS whom Paul preacheth. And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, which did so. And the evil spirit answered and said: JESUS I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye? And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded."

2017 Acura NSX - 2-Door 2-Seater Fastback Coupe Mid-Engine Sports Car / Super Car - 2016 Then and Now Series 8/10 - 108/250 Diecast Scale 1:65 by Hot Wheels

When it comes to generations in the automotive world, namely, a series of successive renditions developed by a car maker, based on a particular model, during a more or less specified period, usually involving gradual changes in the overall design, there have been interesting and sometimes disappointing variations of the concept...

For instance, sometimes there is a gap of a few years or even decades between the first generation of a particular model and the next one: it depends on several factors, I would say mainly of an economic nature, you know, the automotive industry is a business, more than anything else, but the nature or typology of the model itself also plays a role in that matter...

There are models so unique, so different to what a specific car brand makes on a regular basis, that the executives responsible for financial decisions making, take some time before giving green light to certain projects, like the resurgence of a distinctive model.

And my guest for this publication is certainly a very distinctive model from a car manufacturer that is usually acknowledged by other kind of developments: the 2017 Acura NSX, a 2-Door 2-Seater Fastback Coupe Mid-Engine Sports Car / Super Car.

This NSX represents the second generation or more like the revival of a model that put Honda in the imaginary of a, for that time, brand new market: the Super (Sports) Cars, because seemingly Sports Cars were just not enough for people who were getting used to the extravagances of the 90s and the NSX was just that: an extravangance by Honda (that was marketed as Acura for North America, China, Hong Kong and Kuwait).

This new rendition was released 31 years after the introduction of the original one, 16 years after the last rendition of the first generation, in 2016 and it’s a very different product, hybrid to begin with, much more electronic, computerized, much less mechanic (more synthetic, if you will), with all-wheel drive instead of rear-wheel drive, etc.

Besides, in my opinion as professional (graphic) designer, the overall exterior styling makes really hard to establish a direct connection between this new technological beast and its previous rendition; I mean, it has the NSX badge, but it doesn’t have the NSX "feeling", neither inside nor outside, there is no clear "common thread" here, so it could be any other model and that’s not what you expect from a revival...

From a time when I was still interested in toy cars by Hot Wheels and Matchbox in general, even those of recent manufacturing, albeit that interest was already declining, comes my guest for the present review: the ’17 Acura NSX, a model designed by the recently deceased legend of the new school, Ryu Asada and I must say his work here was meritorious...

The general resemblance of the new NSX was very well achieved, obviously, with the limitations expected in a toy car by Hot Wheels and the level of detail is very decent; my guests is the debut of this model for the 2016 Then and Now Series, paired with its 90s counterpart, it has had at least 12 iterations, 10 for lines of the Regular category and 2 for the Adult category...

I got it through the primary market, in a local retail chain store; it has diecast body and black plastic chassis, for once, the roof was made in diecast as it should be, because since it’s painted in black in the actual car, you would expect the plastic roof molded with the windows, so usual due to the costs-cutting policies in Hot Wheels and Matchbox...

The paint job was made in dark blue with pearlescent finishing, a quite attractive selection, albeit with a blemish in the left door, complemented by tampos and/or decals for the headlights, front grille, Acura insignia on the front trunk, faux air inlets (the engine is behind the seats), roof, tail lights and Acura insignia at the rear; the interiors were worked in black, with a basic level of detail, the windows are smoked, the plastic wheels feature Y5 Spokes rims design in gray and it was made in Malaysia...

Act 18:19-23 "And he came to Ephesus, and left them there: but he himself entered into the synagogue, and reasoned with the Jews. When they desired him to tarry longer time with them, he consented not; but bade them farewell, saying: I must by all means keep this feast that cometh in Jerusalem: but I will return again unto you, if GOD will. And he sailed from Ephesus. And when he had landed at Caesarea, and gone up, and saluted the church, he went down to Antioch. And after he had spent some time there, he departed, and went over all the country of Galatia and Phrygia in order, strengthening all the disciples."

1997 - 1998 Acura Integra Type R Custom - Compact 2-Door Liftback 2+2 Coupe Sports Car American Specs 2002 Import Heat Series 6/6 Diecast Scale 1:63 by Johnny Lightning

ENGLISH
Perhaps the eighteenth letter of the English alphabet doesn’t say too much in most contexts of language, unless it’s part of a word, but once this single letter is named in the context of automotive universe, the situation tends to change a little bit...

Sometimes, when an "R" is added to the name of a particular model it’s not just a fancy colophon, it actually points out to the features and improvements made to a street car, in order to make it more akin to a car prepared either for Racing or Racetracks...

The use of the "R code" is widespread in this industry and there are many examples; just to mention a few car brands, with "R cars", well, we have: Ford, Volkswagen, Audi, Koenigsegg, Pagani, McLaren, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Porsche, Nissan, Jaguar, Caterham, Dodge, Mercedes-Benz and the list can go on and on...

Today I’m introducing precisely one of those "R cars", which was developed by a Japanese company and by no means it was considered part of the automotive mainstream: the 1997 - 1998 Acura Integra Type R Custom, a Compact 2-Door Liftback 2+2 Coupe Sports Car with American Specs.

The Type R designation itself appeared in the early 90s, in 1992 to be precise and the first car to feature this badge was no other than the NSX, but it was used as well for the Civic, the Accord and obviously the Integra.

This designation is applied to special versions of the models by Honda already mentioned, which receive multiple improvements regarding their regular counterparts, including stiffer chassis and suspension, reinforced body in critical areas, limited-slip differential, a higher performance engine and a noticeable weight reduction, thanks to the deletion of luxuries like air conditioning, sound deadening, sunroof, cruise control and the like.

Now, it’s worth clarifying that Type R cars were offered at the beggining exclusively for the Japanese domestic market (JDM) and in the particular case of the Integra, which was introduced in 1995 as a Honda model, it became the first ever Type R to reach the North American market, only that it was sold as an Acura model.

If you’re familiar with the 90s, specially with the car design in vogue by that time, you already know that headlights styling used to be quite rectangular, but curiously for this model was created a front fascia with four rounded lights that was duddeb "bug eyes", a design that was not so well received in Japan, then a more traditional rectangular lights design was offered too, albeit it managed to generate empathy in other markets and it was the option chosen for United States.

While in the 90s the Acura Integra Type R was pretty much a competent and affordable Japanese sports car, that could easily go unnoticed, despite its great performance, bearing in mind that it’s a front wheel drive car, nowadays is becoming part of the automotive mainstream, just like many other cars belonging to that vilified decade, that finally are starting to receive the credit and admiration they deserved from the get go, maybe because it takes some time for people to truly appreciate a gem, even if it’s in front of their eyes...

A common criticism against Johnny Lightning among people who do not necessarily collect or do not have a proper knowledge about this brand, is that so far it has not released new molds / tools / models, since its revival in 2016, by Round 2 Corp, a topic I addressed initially in a previous review you can read here.

However, this time I want to explore this supposed "issue" from a slightly different perspective, because last time I talked about some of the most relevant traits of the Premium segment of diecast models (which explains largely the lack of brand new models by JL) and now I want to talk a little bit about the assortment of models Johnny Lightning offers.

I must admit that it’s actually very difficult to establish the exact number of models developed by this brand during its time in this market; in fact and according to the information available in the Round 2 website, there is reliable data only for the first stage of Johnny Lightning, under the Topper Toys umbrella (1969 - 1971), with a total of 47 models.

For the subsequent stages between 1994 and 2013 (before the revival), there are no official data regarding the amount of models released by JL, the only thing I can say for sure is: there are many.

I have more than 70 publications related with Johnny Lightning products, there are more "waiting in the oven" (a figure that could be higher) and I don’t think I have in my collection more than 60% of the amount of different models created by this brand in around 19 years (since 1994).

My estimation is between 250 and 300 (maybe more) different models and that’s a lot when we are talking about a brand of the Premium segment, where licensing and production costs are way higher (by the way, these are true Premium items, not toy cars with a fake "premium" tag on the card or box).

You don’t need all the 5 fingers of one of your hands to count the brands in the Premium segment that can boast such a wide offer and yet some "connoisseurs" out there are complaining about the lack of new products by Johnny Lightning, when after its revival, roughly less that 50% of the models released by this brand have been re-released until now, so there is a lot of this brand yet to be seen...

I got the guest for this review in the secondary market, with the help of a friend of mine, fellow collector and importer, pretty much 4 years ago; I was looking for this model since at least 2 years before I finally got it.

To be honest, I wasn’t expecting too much, this model is genuinely difficult to find, due chiefly to the fact that only 8 iterations were released of it, as far as I know, during the Playing Mantis / RC2 / Tomy era (2 more in the current Round 2 era, as MiJo exclusives -2019-), which are not that many actually and even less considering the low production figures for which JL is known.

For this photo shoot I chose some of the other models based on Japanese cars and I think there is great selection there, even though Johnny Lightning is not known widely because of its products based on imported (which are not American) vehicles.

The model introduced in this publication belongs to the 2002 Import Heat Series, consisting of 6 models with different themes; it came inside a special big and thick card, nicely designed.

It follows the tradition of Johnny Lightning offering full diecast construction, along with the excellent level of detail (including the chassis), proportions and overall finishes you expect in this category, albeit with a bit lower stance it would be better.

The paint job was made in bright yellow complemented by a flashy decoration, which feels like something you would see in an actual Japanese sports car of the 90s, on virtually all the panels of the body, in apple green, yellow, black, white, red and gray, featuring extensive and fine tampos and/or decals, I like very much the work on the hood with a simulated carbon fiber texture.

The windows are clear and received additional tampos and/or decals all around, the interiors were worked in black and well detailed, as usual; the multipart wheels feature Wire Spoke Wheels rims desing in chrome, plastic slick tires and it was made in China...

Ezq 23:31-39 "Thou hast walked in the way of thy sister; therefore will I give her cup into thine hand. Thus saith the LORD GOD; thou shalt drink of thy sister's cup deep and large: thou shalt be laughed to scorn and had in derision; it containeth much. Thou shalt be filled with drunkenness and sorrow, with the cup of astonishment and desolation, with the cup of thy sister Samaria. Thou shalt even drink it and suck it out, and thou shalt break the shards thereof, and pluck off thine own breasts: for I have spoken it, saith the LORD GOD. Therefore thus saith the LORD GOD; because thou hast forgotten me, and cast me behind thy back, therefore bear thou also thy lewdness and thy whoredoms. The LORD said moreover unto me; Son of man, wilt thou judge Aholah and Aholibah? yea, declare unto them their abominations; that they have committed adultery, and blood is in their hands, and with their idols have they committed adultery, and have also caused their sons, whom they bore unto me, to pass for them through the fire, to devour them. Moreover this they have done unto me: they have defiled my sanctuary in the same day, and have profaned my sabbaths. For when they had slain their children to their idols, then they came the same day into my sanctuary to profane it; and, lo, thus have they done in the midst of mine house."
