1985 Honda (Civic) CR-X Si - Subcompact 2-Door Hatchback Coupe Sports / Commuter Car (Japanese Specs) - 2016 Night Burnerz Series 5/10 - 85/250 Diecast Scale 1:57 by Hot Wheels

For English version scroll below

English version
Hot Wheels and Matchbox, the toy car brands of Mattel, are not only creating but also modifying their molds and tools in a regular basis; the latter practice, actually is not an exclusivity of this company, because other companies, not only in the business of toy cars, but also in the development of scale replicas, do pretty much the same...

However, the purpose of modifying molds and tools of diecast vehicles changes, depending on the kind of company we are talking about: toy cars and scale replicas manufacturers have different priorities, just because their customers have different expectations.

In the case of those developing scale replicas for adult collectors, their main purpose is to improve features of their products, regarding realism and level of detail in particular, without sacrificing quality and keeping the asking price in the reasonable zone, because they know their market is small, their customers are demanding, looking for good value for money; accordingly, these companies want to offer an attractive product, while they remain competitive.

On the other hand, you have the manufacturers of toy cars, mostly for kids, whose main purpose, when it comes to modify their molds and tools, is to reduce production costs and increase their revenue margins, so given that their customers are way less demanding and their market is way larger too, improving their products or offering more quality hardly become concerns, and these companies apply consistently the law of the least effort.

This is particularly true in the case of Mattel, its in-house brand Hot Wheels and its secondary brand Matchbox, since it became part of its assets, because both are managed with the same skimpy vision of greedy multinational corporations, that couldn’t care any less about offering good value for money.

As adult collector, you can see this law of least effort applied in several aspects related with their products, regardless they belong to the Regular, Adult, Deluxe or Premium categories.

Albeit, I must clarify that in the case of Matchbox, true Premium lines are no longer produced since around 20 years or more ago and those offered through the Mattel Creations platform are NOT Premium items at all.

These items happen to be toy cars from the Regular or Adult categories, whether adapted in a rather poor way or created from the scratch for the Mattel Creations / Matchbox platform, that simply do not fit in what you expect from a true Premium collectible and well, the concepts of toy car and Premium are mutually exclusive anyway, for those who fully understand both concepts.

It’s like when you take a cheap suit, toss some accessories on it to make it look expensive and exclusive, but you fail to hide its true nature and it ends being just an overpriced trinket.

Talking about this law of least effort, it’s based on the principle of cutting costs at all cost, to increase profit; it’s translated, for the toy cars industry, in measures like: adding more plastic and reducing the amount of diecast accordingly, using cheaper finishes in its products, removing opening features or offering them at a way higher cost, using the same kind of accesories or parts through all their lines, reducing steps / simplifying production processes, etc.

My guest for this review is just one of the many examples of molds and tools modified during their existence, sometimes even more than once, yet, I must confess that it’s a very atypical case and I will explain why later...

It’s based on the 1985 Honda (Civic) CR-X Si, a Subcompact 2-Door Hatchback Coupe Sports / Commuter Car, with Japanese specs (Right Hand Drive - RHD), the first generation of this model to be precise.

Nonetheless, it’s not just the stock version, no, but a version customized by Mugen, a Japanese institution in high performance parts and in motorsports as well.

I got this item through the primary market, at a local chain retail store, pretty much 6 years ago; the model was designed by Ryu Asada, a representative of the new school in the blue brand of Mattel, who sadly passed away in 2021, a prolific and talented professional of whom I have several models in my collection.

This toy car was introduced directly in lines from the Adult category, back in 2012 and it had 3 more releases for lines in this category for 2013, 2014 and 2017; it has had at least 12 iterations, 8 of which were for lines in the Regular category (Mainline); my guest is the first release for the Mainline, by the way.

Several important changes were made to molds and tools for this model: the most noticeable has to do with the removal of the diecast chassis in order to replace it with a plastic one, also part of the body, that used to be in plastic, was merged in a one-piece diecast body.

Now, while the diecast proportion was reduced between 10% and 15%, there is more in this modification of molds and tools: the assembling was simplified for the Mainline version, the plastic headlights, part of the mold of the windows, were removed, the interiors that used to be part of the plastic portion of the body, in the version for Adult lines, are now independent and the product somehow manages to look better, but it was put a hideous stem in the middle of the cabin, for the rear rivet, that detracts from the appearance...

My guest offers diecast body and plastic chassis in black, the dose of diecast is decent; the paint job was made in red with glossy finishing, complemented by a very nice decoration, on the hood, roof and side panels, with tampos in black, white and golden / copper.

The interiors were worked in silver, with a basic level of detail, the stearing wheel is specially ugly; the mold for the clear windows included the B pillars, which was an issue of the version for lines in the Adult category, that was not corrected for the Mainline version, but, what else you expect from Mattel?

The plastic wheels selection for this model, with Phil Riehlman 5 Spokes rims design, featuring chrome finishing, with equal size in front and rear, is very appropriate indeed and it was made in Malaysia...

Act 22:6-11 "And it came to pass, that, as I made my journey, and was come nigh unto Damascus about noon, suddenly there shone from heaven a great light round about me. And I fell unto the ground, and heard a voice saying unto me, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? And I answered, Who art thou, LORD? And he said unto me, I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom thou persecutest. And they that were with me saw indeed the light, and were afraid; but they heard not the voice of him that spake to me. And I said, What shall I do, LORD? And the LORD said unto me: Arise, and go into Damascus; and there it shall be told thee of all things which are appointed for thee to do. And when I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of them that were with me, I came into Damascus."

2001 Acura Integra GS-R Customized LHD (Left Hand Drive) American Specs - Compact 2-Door 2-Seater Liftback Coupe Sports Car - 2016 Night Burnerz Series 9/10 - 89/250 Diecast Scale 1:65 by Hot Wheels

There was an idea printed in my mind about the automotive products that certain brands offer for international markets and it was that they were just rebadged vehicles, featuring too many similarities with their original / local counterparts, to even consider them different models on their own right...

And it’s not an unfounded idea, in fact, when car manufacturers have to face the challenge of expanding to other markets, specially in times of crises (and you already know that we have had many artificial crises happening one after another, particularly since the last century), they take a model with potential appeal and put maybe a different badge somewhere, in order to export it...

Usually the budget is not as generous as they would like, so car manufacturers resort to a few cosmetic modifications of the body or facelifts, to make the car look kind of "novel" regarding the original / local model taken as a basis and that’s it.

But sometimes, when budget is not a serious constrain, these same car manufacturers develop more substantial changes in the body design, a different work on interiors or even improvements in performance (depending on what is allowed by the regulations in the destination country) and yeah, they also throw some new and fancy badge to complete the product for export.

The latter probably is the case with my guest for this publication: the 2001 Acura Integra GS-R (Customized), a Compact 2-Door 2-Seater Liftback Coupe Sports Car, that was developed mainly with the market of United States in mind, as all the products in the Acura catalog, albeit it has been marketed or imported also to other countries.

The successor of the Quint, that was one of the first models offered under the Acura brand, along with the Legend, was basically a slightly more luxurious version of its Honda counterpart: average consumers in the North American market have a weakness for high performance cars that offer comfort and a certain dose of luxury on top of that.

In point of fact, those who love performance over comfort in the Northamerican market are a minority, it’s not only a matter of regulations, speaking of which, the stricter and somewhat exaggerated regulations particularly in United States, punish noticeably performance: that’s why the JDM versions of nippon models offer better performance figures and less luxury features in general terms than their USDM counterparts.

So as I have been learning in my journey through this hobby, when it comes to car brands developed for a certain market, United States in this case, is not always is a matter of a slight facelift and a new badge after all, besides, this entry level pocket rocket offered by Acura had been growing in the affections of many car enthusiasts, despite its quirks...

Since I started to show interest in Asian cars, particularly those from Japan, I have been adding different examples of vehicles from this provenance and following my philosophy of "variety above all", I have not limited myself to a particular typology, car brand or diecast manufacturer...

But this interest for Asian vehicles didn’t start with toy cars by Hot Wheels, NO; scale replicas by Muscle Machines (of which you can read here) were responsible for igniting the flame of appreciation for the Asian automotive world, followed later by Johnny Lightning and Kyosho, even Hasbro was instrumental in that sense.

I know that the marketing department at Hot Wheels and brand promoters out there want to award all the credit for the positioning of the Asian car culture in the mainstream of the diecast industry, to the blue brand of Mattel (they are so predictable and fallacious!).

However, it was the consistent effort of other brands of diecast models and the popular culture, of course, what put the Asian automotive scene in the spotlight, years before it were anything for the brand of the flaming logo and we the collectors know that very well.

What can be awarded to Hot Wheels, to be fair, is that this brand popularized and consolidated the Asian car culture in the mind of buyers and additionally it allowed us, the collectors, to have one more option to consider, when it comes to toy cars, albeit in my case, this option is no longer appealing...

I’m introducing in this review another model developed by the noted and sadly deceased Ryu Asada: the ’01 Acura Integra GS-R, in a moderately customized version that features an interesting wide-body kit and curiously, also the front fascia that was more popular in the Japanese market, with elongated headlights, instead of the 4 round front lights that were more popular in the North American market...

The toy car has an appropriate level of detail, it’s the debut of this model for the 2016 Night Burnerz Series, it was also offered in white for that year, it has had at least 10 iterations, all of them for lines of the Regular category.

I got it through the primary market, in a local retail chain store; it has diecast body and dark silver plastic chassis; the paint job was made in plain reddish yellow (a bit darker than in the actual car), complemented by a few tampos and/or decals for the headlights and tail lights, I added painted touches for the headlights, tail lights and the Acura insignia on the top of the tail.

The interiors were worked in black, with the typical basic level of detail, the windows are smoked and a bit too thick, the plastic wheels feature Open Hole 5 Spokes rims design in black, with chrome lip and it was made in Malaysia...

Act 19:11-16 "And GOD wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul: So that from his body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them. Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the LORD JESUS, saying: We adjure you by JESUS whom Paul preacheth. And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, which did so. And the evil spirit answered and said: JESUS I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye? And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded."

2017 Acura NSX - 2-Door 2-Seater Fastback Coupe Mid-Engine Sports Car / Super Car - 2016 Then and Now Series 8/10 - 108/250 Diecast Scale 1:65 by Hot Wheels

ENGLISH
When it comes to generations in the automotive world, namely, a series of successive renditions developed by a car maker, based on a particular model, during a more or less specified period, usually involving gradual changes in the overall design, there have been interesting and sometimes disappointing variations of the concept...

For instance, sometimes there is a gap of a few years or even decades between the first generation of a particular model and the next one: it depends on several factors, I would say mainly of an economic nature, you know, the automotive industry is a business, more than anything else, but the nature or typology of the model itself also plays a role in that matter...

There are models so unique, so different to what a specific car brand makes on a regular basis, that the executives responsible for financial decisions making, take some time before giving green light to certain projects, like the resurgence of a distinctive model.

And my guest for this publication is certainly a very distinctive model from a car manufacturer that is usually acknowledged by other kind of developments: the 2017 Acura NSX, a 2-Door 2-Seater Fastback Coupe Mid-Engine Sports Car / Super Car.

This NSX represents the second generation or more like the revival of a model that put Honda in the imaginary of a, for that time, brand new market: the Super (Sports) Cars, because seemingly Sports Cars were just not enough for people who were getting used to the extravagances of the 90s and the NSX was just that: an extravangance by Honda (that was marketed as Acura for North America, China, Hong Kong and Kuwait).

This new rendition was released 31 years after the introduction of the original one, 16 years after the last rendition of the first generation, in 2016 and it’s a very different product, hybrid to begin with, much more electronic, computerized, much less mechanic (more synthetic, if you will), with all-wheel drive instead of rear-wheel drive, etc.

Besides, in my opinion as professional (graphic) designer, the overall exterior styling makes really hard to establish a direct connection between this new technological beast and its previous rendition; I mean, it has the NSX badge, but it doesn’t have the NSX "feeling", neither inside nor outside, there is no clear "common thread" here, so it could be any other model and that’s not what you expect from a revival...

From a time when I was still interested in toy cars by Hot Wheels and Matchbox in general, even those of recent manufacturing, albeit that interest was already declining, comes my guest for the present review: the ’17 Acura NSX, a model designed by the recently deceased legend of the new school, Ryu Asada and I must say his work here was meritorious...

The general resemblance of the new NSX was very well achieved, obviously, with the limitations expected in a toy car by Hot Wheels and the level of detail is very decent; my guests is the debut of this model for the 2016 Then and Now Series, paired with its 90s counterpart, it has had at least 12 iterations, 10 for lines of the Regular category and 2 for the Adult category...

I got it through the primary market, in a local retail chain store; it has diecast body and black plastic chassis, for once, the roof was made in diecast as it should be, because since it’s painted in black in the actual car, you would expect the plastic roof molded with the windows, so usual due to the costs-cutting policies in Hot Wheels and Matchbox...

The paint job was made in dark blue with pearlescent finishing, a quite attractive selection, albeit with a blemish in the left door, complemented by tampos and/or decals for the headlights, front grille, Acura insignia on the front trunk, faux air inlets (the engine is behind the seats), roof, tail lights and Acura insignia at the rear; the interiors were worked in black, with a basic level of detail, the windows are smoked, the plastic wheels feature Y5 Spokes rims design in gray and it was made in Malaysia...

Act 18:19-23 "And he came to Ephesus, and left them there: but he himself entered into the synagogue, and reasoned with the Jews. When they desired him to tarry longer time with them, he consented not; but bade them farewell, saying: I must by all means keep this feast that cometh in Jerusalem: but I will return again unto you, if GOD will. And he sailed from Ephesus. And when he had landed at Caesarea, and gone up, and saluted the church, he went down to Antioch. And after he had spent some time there, he departed, and went over all the country of Galatia and Phrygia in order, strengthening all the disciples."
