No hay duda que la Serie S de Navistar International (conocida actualmente como International Motors LLC), fue y ha sido un hito que marcó la pauta de negocio para esta marca, la cual es ahora subsidiaria de Traton Group, a su vez la división de camiones de Volkswagen Group...
Esto es verdad incluso desde que esta compañía, anteriormente independiente, fuera conocida como International Harvester (IH) y eso es de esperarse, debido al hecho que la Serie S comenzó producción desde 1978, cuando IH consolidó sus Lineas de camiones previas: IHC LoadStar (vehículos de trabajo mediano) e IHC FleetStar (vehículos de trabajo pesado), en una sola Serie...
Mientras que los camiones en prácticamente todas sus formas han estado en el núcleo del negocio para International, probablemente la Serie S, más precisamente su segunda generación, marcó el camino a seguir y fue probablemente el producto más exitoso, comprendiendo camiones para trabajo mediano y pesado, que esta marca haya tenido.
Aún su diseño exterior llegó a ser un punto de referencia para otros fabricantes de camiones: encuentro ciertas similitudes en este aspecto con vehículos del mismo segmento y era.
Mencionaría, en ese sentido, ejemplos hechos por: Ford (F700 - F800), Sterling (L7000 - L8000), Freightliner (FL60 - FL70 - FL80), Kenworth (T300 - T400), Volvo (WG), Chevrolet (Kodiak C6500 - C7500 - C8500) o GMC (Topkick C6500 - C7500 - C8500).
Estoy presentando esta vez una de las muchas configuraciones que podías encontrar de este versátil catálogo de camiones y debo aclarar que, en la Serie S, había una Línea conocida como 4000, compuesta por camiones para trabajo mediano y pesado, también la Línea 7100 / 8100 de tracto camiones y la Línea 2500 / 2600 de camiones para trabajo severo.
A la primera Línea mencionada pertenece mi invitado para esta publicación: la Máquina de Bomberos / Camión Autobomba International Navistar 4900 Serie S 4x2 Crew Cab de 1999, un Camión para Trabajo Pesado Clase 7 / Máquina de Bomberos / Aparato de Bomberos / Aparato Contra Incendios, Clase A Tipo 2 (Para Extinción de Incendios Estructurales en la Ciudad).
Debo aclarar también, que hay un cierto traslapamiento con respecto a los tracto camiones, entre las Líneas 4000 y 7100 / 8100, debido a una estratificación compleja de productos; el sector de los camiones comerciales es un mercado muy diversificado, ya que puedes encontrar un vehículo para casi cualquier clase de trabajo que tengas en mente.
Ahora, una de las aplicaciones más ampliamente conocida para la Serie S, Línea 4000 de camiones, fue precisamente los aparatos contra incendios y aún puedes encontrar un montón de ellos en condiciones de funcionamiento.
Sin embargo, ya que la segunda generación de esta Serie y Línea fue ofrecida entre 1989 y 2002, la mayoría de ellos han sido reemplazados por modelos más nuevos en sus respectivos Departamentos de Bomberos.
Estos camiones son adquiridos por compañías especializadas en aparatos de bomberos, en una configuración de chasis / cabina comercial y luego reciben una carrocería utilitaria personalizada de acuerdo con necesidades específicas, que en el caso de vehículos Clase A Tipo 2 pueden ser ya sea una autobomba, un carrotanque, un camión de respuesta, un camión para terreno agreste / forestal o un camión de rescate / ambulancia, rara vez otra clase de aparato contra incendios.
Ahora, teniendo en mente que esta no es una réplica a escala, fue imposible para mí encontrar la coincidencia exacta para mi invitado, pero investigando acerca de la posible inspiración, bueno, encuentro similitudes con carrocerías utilitarias hechas por empresas en este segmento como: Superior, E-One, KME, Pierce o BOE (Boise Mobile Equipment), así que tal vez está basado holgadamente en productos de una de estas renombradas marcas...
Por sí acaso, puedes revisar otros ejemplos de camiones International en mi colección, ya sea como juguetes o como réplicas a escala aquí, aquí y aquí; pienso que es siempre revelador ver lo que el mercado de coleccionables tiene para ofrecer y comparar, pero también es alentador, porque te permite saber que hay opciones diferentes, así que no tienes que depender de una o dos marcas, que si bien populares, pueden ser bastante decepcionantes últimamente...
¿Hay alguna duda sobre mi amor por los aparatos contra incendios?, si ese es el caso, puedes revisar este blog mío y encontrarás una buena cantidad de reseñas acerca de ellos, por ejemplo, mirando por las etiquetas Emergency Vehicles o Fire Apparatus, sin mencionar los que están en camino de ser publicados, porque a pesar de mi algo larga ausencia, no estoy planeando dejar este blog a la deriva...
Y cuando se trata de este tipo de vehículos, Matchbox ha tenido un buen surtido de modelos que, a pesar de ser camiones de juguete, tienen un encanto particular para mí, excepción hecha con los ejemplos más recientes, que en la mayoría de casos tienen una dosis ridículamente alta de plástico barato, por tanto, representan un insulto al legado que esta marca construyó alrededor de sus versiones de juguete de aparatos contra incendios...
Mi invitado fue llamado simplemente International Pumper y su primer lanzamiento fue en 1999, como parte de la Línea Principal de Matchbox, ha tenido al menos 52 iteraciones, incluyendo variaciones, principalmente para la categoría Regular, aunque hubo 2 iteraciones hechas para Líneas en la categoría Adulta; aparentemente, fue descontinuado en 2015.
En términos generales, este es un camión de juguete muy agradable, con un muy buen nivel de detalle, especialmente considerando la escala aproximada usada para él (1:96, con todo, el chasis reclama una escala 1:100, pero deberías tomarlo siempre con una pizca de sal, en el caso de vehículos de juguete).
Puedes notar que el diseñador involucrado le dio algo de amor a esta pequeña maravilla y realmente lo aprecio como coleccionista adulto experimentado; pero no todo es color de rosa y explicaré después por qué: el hecho que es un camión de juguete no significa que tengo expectativas bajas, aún más cuando estamos hablando acerca de Matchbox y donde quiera que haya mezquindad, verás el resultado...
Conseguí mis dos muestras de este modelo, a través del mercado secundario, uno de ellos a través de un vendedor privado, hace más o menos 6 años, mientras el otro con la ayuda de un amigo mío, colega coleccionista e importador / vendedor privado, hace alrededor de 9 años.
Mi primera muestra de este modelo pertenece a la Serie Matchbox EMT de 2013, 5-Pack y ya presenté otro modelo de este 5-Pack, de cual puedes leer aquí; por cierto, esta clase de sets también son parte de la Línea Principal / categoría Regular.
Mi segunda muestra, por otro lado, pertenece a la Serie Matchbox On A Mission Supreme Hero de 2015, la cual es parte de la categoría Adulta y justo como en el caso anterior, he presentado otros modelos de la Serie aquí y aquí.
Ambas muestras ofrecen carrocería en diecast y chasis plástico en plateado; como ya mencioné, el nivel de detalle general es muy bueno, pero hay un aspecto, entre otros, que realmente no me gusta: entre 1999 y 2009, este camión de juguete presentaba un inserto plástico separado para la barra de luces en forma de V en la parte superior de la cabina, lo cual permitía colores diferentes para las ventanas y la barra de luces.
No obstante, en 2012, el modelo fue reintroducido con un cambio notable: la barra de luces en forma de V fue moldeada con las ventanas, en la típica maniobra para recorte de costos de Mattel, lo cual obviamente le resta valor a la apariencia de este tipo de producto.
Hablando de mi segunda muestra, bueno, es una Serie de la categoría Adulta, con una etiqueta de precio cinco veces más alta, así que esperas algunos extras y en ese sentido, un chasis plateado en lugar de un chasis con acabado cromado, simplemente no está en sintonía con la etiqueta de precio, pero hay más aspectos desfavorables.
Respecto a los trabajos de pintura, fueron hechos, en el primer caso, en rojo, con acabado brillante, complementado por una decoración con tampos, solo en los paneles laterales, en blanco, negro, rojo y amarillo, ficticia (no basada en un vehículo real) y simple, pero apropiada; tuve que añadir algunos detalles pintados para los faros delanteros (que para esta sesión de fotos no fue incluido) y luces estrobo frontales, en plateado y cobre, así como para la barra de luces en forma de V, en plateado y cobre.
En el segundo caso, el trabajo de pintura fue hecho en amarillo, con una decoración basada en un Departamento de Bomberos real: el Boone County Fire Protection District (Distrito de Protección Contra Incendios del Condado de Boone), localizado en el Estado de Missouri; sin embargo, el problema serio con esta decoración es que fue hecha con impresión digital en inyección de tinta, algo inaceptable en un artículo de la categoría Adulta.
Realmente no importa cuanto quieran ocultar este hecho los estúpidos promotores de marca allá afuera, esos farsantes con blogs y videoblogs muy populares, que son solo vitrinas de venta, con poca o ninguna sustancia...
Esa es la clase de cosas que hacen que los coleccionistas adultos serios se cansen y luego abandonen estas marcas de mente mezquina, que solo están pensando en la ganancia y les importan un bledo sus productos: tarde o temprano estas marcas serán irrelevantes e irán a la bancarrota, no importa cuán grandes sean, por causa de su completa carencia de visión y su codicia...
Si quieres una buena versión perteneciente a una Línea de la categoría Adulta, mucho mejor y realista que la que se presenta aquí, de la Serie Supreme Heroes Collection, debes volver a 1999, cuando una Línea, parte de la Serie Matchbox Collectibles - Premiere Fire, fue lanzada.
Esta edición especial venía en una tarjeta más larga y gruesa, impresa a todo color y junto con el modelo, fue incluida una bonita caja de cartón, también impresa; el camión de juguete representado, con algunas licencias, por supuesto, es una máquina de bomberos real del Fort Wayne Fire Department (Departamento de Bomberos del Fuerte Wayne), presentando una decoración muy prolija, con tampos y/o calcomanías: en conjunto hace lucir a la versión Supreme Heroes, como una imitación lamentable y barata (que cuesta más de lo que debería)...
Justo como en la muestra previa, tuve que añadir algunos detalles pintados para los faros delanteros y luces estrobo frontales, en plateado y rojo metalizado, así como para la barra de luces en forma de V, en plateado, azul metalizado y rojo metalizado.
Los interiores fueron trabajados en blanco para la primera muestra y gris claro para la segunda, con un nivel de detalle decente, el molde incluye las mangueras de bomberos planas en la parte superior de la carrocería utilitaria, un toque bonito, que añade contraste de color; las ventanas son tintadas de rojo y transparentes respectivamente.
Con respecto a las ruedas, mi primera muestra ofrece ruedas plásticas presentando diseño de rimes Open Dot Dash, con acabado dorado cromado, que de alguna forma combina muy bien con el esquema de color rojo, mientras mi segunda muestra ofrece ruedas multiparte Ultra Max, presentando diseño de rimes 5 Spokes Utility en plateado, con labio y tapacubos cromado, llantas en caucho sintético labradas y finalmente, ambos fueron hechos en Tailandia...

While trucks in virtually all their forms have been at the core of business for International, probably the S Series, more precisely its second generation, marked the way forward and it was probably the most successful product, comprising medium and heavy duty trucks, that this brand has had.
Even its exterior design became a point of reference for other truck manufacturers: I find certain similarities in this aspect with vehicles from the same segment and era.
I would mention, in that sense, examples made by: Ford (F700 - F800), Sterling (L7000 - L8000), Freightliner (FL60 - FL70 - FL80), Kenworth (T300 - T400), Volvo (WG), Chevrolet (Kodiak C6500 - C7500 - C8500) or GMC (Topkick C6500 - C7500 - C8500).
I’m featuring this time one of the many configurations you could find of this versatile catalog of trucks and I must clarify that, in the S Series, there was a Line known as 4000, comprised by medium and heavy duty trucks, also the 7100 / 8100 Line of tractor trucks and the 2500 / 2600 Line of severe duty trucks.
To the first Line mentioned belongs my guest for this publication: the 1999 International Navistar 4900 S Series 4x2 Crew Cab - Fire Engine / Pumper Truck, a Heavy Duty, Class 7 Truck / Class A Type 2 (Structural Firefighting in the City) Fire Engine / Fire Appliance / Fire Apparatus.
I must clarify as well, that there is a certain overlap regarding tractor trucks, between the 4000 and 7100 / 8100 Lines, due to a complex stratification of products; the commercial trucks sector is a very diversified market, since you can find a vehicle for almost any kind of work you have in mind.
Now, one of the most widely known application for the S Series, 4000 Line of trucks, was precisely fire appliances and you can still find a lot of them in working condition.
However, since the second generation of this Series and Line was offered between 1989 and 2002, most of them have been replaced by newer models in their respective Fire Departments.
These trucks are acquired by companies specialized in fire appliances, in a commercial chassis / cabin configuration and then receive a customized-to-specific-needs utility body, that in the case of Class A Type 2 vehicles can be either a pumper, a tanker, a responder truck, a wildland / brush truck or a rescue truck / ambulance, rarely other kind of fire apparatus.
Now, bearing in mind that this is not a scale replica, it was impossible for me to find the exact match for my guest, but researching about a possible inspiration, well, I find similarities with utility bodies made by companies in this segment like: Superior, E-One, KME, Pierce or BOE (Boise Mobile Equipment), so maybe it was loosely based on products by one of these renowned brands...
Just in case, you can check other examples of International trucks in my collection, either as toys or as scale replicas here, here and here; I think it’s always revealing to see what the market of collectibles has to offer and compare, but it’s also encouraging, because it lets you know that there are different options, so you don’t have to depend on one or two brands, that while popular, can be quite disappointing lately...
Is there any doubt about my love for fire appliances?, if that’s the case, you could check this blog of mine and you will find a good amount of reviews about them, for instance, looking by the tag Emergency Vehicles or Fire Apparatus, not to mention the ones on the way to be published, because despite my kinda long absence, I’m not planning to leave this blog adrift...
And when it comes to this kind of vehicles, Matchbox has had a good assortment of models that, despite being toy trucks, have a particular charm for me, exception made with the more recent examples, that in most cases have a ridiculously high dose of cheap plastic, hence, represent an insult to the legacy that this brand built around its toy versions of fire appliances...
My guest was called simply International Pumper and its first release was in 1999, as part of the Mainline of Matchbox, it has had at least 52 iterations, including variations, mostly for the Regular category, albeit there were 2 iterations made for Lines in the Adult category; apparently, it was discontinued in 2015.
In general terms, this is a very nice toy truck, with a very good level of detail, specially considering the approximate scale used for it (1:96, yet the chassis claims a 1:100 scale, but you should take it with a pinch of salt always, in the case of toy vehicles).
You can notice the designer involved gave some love to this little marvel and I really appreciate it as experienced adult collector; but not everything is rosy and I will explain later why: the fact that it’s a toy truck doesn’t mean I have low expectations, even more when we are talking about Matchbox and wherever there is meanness, you will see the result...
I got my two samples of this model, throught the secondary market, one of them through a private seller, pretty much 6 years ago, while the other with the help of a friend of mine, fellow collector and importer / private seller, around 9 years ago.
My first sample of this model belongs to the 2013 Matchbox EMT Series, 5-Pack and I already featured another model of this 5-Pack, of which you can read here; by the way, this kind of sets are also part of the Mainline / Regular category.
My second sample, on the other hand, belongs to the 2015 Matchbox On A Mission Supreme Hero Series, which is part of the Adult category and just like in the previous case, I have featured other models of the Series here and here.
Both samples offer diecast body and plastic chassis in silver; as I already mentioned, the overall level of detail is very good, but there is an aspect, among others, I really don’t like: between 1999 and 2009, this toy truck featured a separate plastic insert for the V-shaped light bar at the top of the cabin, which allowed different colors for the windows and the light bar.
Nonetheless, in 2012, the model was reintroduced with a noticeable change: the V-shaped light bar was molded with the windows, in the typical costs-cutting maneuver by Mattel, which obviously detracts from the appearance of this kind of product .
Talking about my second sample, well, it’s a Series from the Adult category, with a price tag five times higher, so you expect some extras and in that sense, a silver chassis instead of a chassis with chrome finishing, is simply not in tune with the price tag, but there are more unfavorable aspects.
Regarding the paint jobs, they were made, in the first case, in red, with glossy finishing, complemented by a decoration with tampos, only on the side panels, in white, black, red and yellow, fictitious (not based on an actual vehicle) and simple, but appropriate; I had to add some painted details for the headlights (that for this photoshoot was not included) and front strobo lights, in silver and copper, as well as for the V-shaped light bar, in silver and copper.
In the second case, the paint job was made in yellow, with a decoration based on an actual Fire Department: the Boone County Fire Protection District, located in the State of Missouri; however, the serious issue with this decoration is that it was made with digital inkjet printing, something unacceptable in an item from the Adult category.
It really doesn’t matter how much the stupid brand promoters out there try to hide this fact, those phonies with very popular blogs and vlogs, which are just sales showcases, with little to no substance...
That’s the kind of stuff that makes serious adult collectors tired and then they abandon these petty-minded brands, which are only thinking in profit and don’t give a damn about their products: sooner or later these brands will become irrelevant and will go bankrupt, no matter how big they are, because of their complete lack of vision and their covetousness...
If you want a good version belonging to a Line in the Adult category, much better and realistic that the one featured here, from the Supreme Heroes Collection Series, you must go back to 1999, when a Line, part of the Matchbox Collectibles - Premiere Fire Series, was released.
This special edition came in a longer and ticker card, printed in full color and along with the model, it was included a nice cardboard box, also printed; the toy truck represented, with some licenses, of course, an actual fire engine of the Fort Wayne Fire Department, featuring a very prolix decoration, with tampos and/or decals: as a whole it makes look the Supreme Heroes version, like a shabby imitation (that costs more than it should)...
Just like in the previous sample, I had to add some painted details for the headlights and front strobo lights, in silver and metallic red, as well as for the V-shaped light bar, in silver, metallic blue and metallic red.
The interiors were worked in white for the first sample and light gray for the second one, with a decent level of detail, the mold includes the lay-flat fire hoses at the top of the utility body, a nice touch, that adds color contrast; the windows are red tinted and clear respectively.
Regarding the wheels, my first sample offers plastic wheels featuring Open Dot Dash rims design, with golden chrome finishing, that somehow combines very well with the red color scheme, while my second sample offers Ultra Max multipart wheels, featuring 5 Spokes Utility rims design in silver, with chrome lip and hub cap, styled synthetic rubber tires and finally, both were made in Thailand...
