Mi gusto por los modelos conceptuales / de diseñador / de fantasía / originales hechos por marcas de autos de juguete como Hot Wheels, Matchbox, Majorette y eventualmente otros fabricantes, está fuera de discusión para cualquiera que haya estado acompañando mi jornada como coleccionista y bloguero desde abril de 2009... 

No solo porque he apreciado el trabajo y creatividad de colegas diseñadores, en este caso, en el campo del diseño automotriz y de coches de juguete (también réplicas / modelos a escala conceptuales), sino porque esta clase de productos son el pretexto perfecto para introducir diferentes tipos de temas en mi blog, relacionados con esta afición, la industria a su alrededor, el gremio del coleccionismo, etc... 

Esta vez quiero hablar sobre un tema en el cual hay asuntos que se dan por sentado, equivocadamente encima de eso la mayoría de veces y el tema es: la relación entre nuestra afición de coleccionar e e-Bay, algo que entraña cierto interés, supongo... 

Comencemos por establecer que e-Bay fue fundada en 1995 por Pierre Omidyar, llegando a ser una plataforma en línea para subastas, negocios y ventas entre vendedores individuales (revendedores), negocios pequeños, compradores y postores. 

Debido a su naturaleza, ya descrita brevemente, ha sido una herramienta más bien importante para esta afición, por ejemplo, porque ha permitido diferentes clases de tratos entre revendedores, compradores y coleccionistas alrededor del mundo. 

En ese sentido, para algunas personas es la única forma de conseguir las cosas en las que están interesados para su colección o para subastar / vender sus coleccionables en existencia (dependiendo del lado de esta afición en el que estés), con alguna facilidad, así que su importancia en el ecosistema del coleccionismo no es despreciable. 

Sin embargo, este hecho ha llevado a la mala interpretación de su rol en nuestra afición y la generación de una serie de suposiciones que no tienen base en la realidad. 

Ahora, debido precisamente a la naturaleza de e-Bay, que privilegia lo que ha venido a llamarse "libre comercio" o "comunidad de negocios auto-regulada", esta plataforma ha sido usada también por estafadores, vendedores inescrupulosos, traficantes, distribuidores de mercancía falsificada y acaparadores / especuladores, algo que la mayoría de personas tiende a ignorar. 

Obviamente estos factores tienen implicaciones serias en lo que puedes esperar, lo que puedes o no puedes hacer con esta plataforma y le quita la base a los asuntos dados por hecho o suposiciones sobre e-Bay de las cuales quiero hablar. 

Uno de estos asuntos / suposiciones es que: "e-Bay es el punto de referencia cuando se trata de precios para coleccionables", ¿has escuchado este disparate?, ¿cuántas veces?, porque compradores ineptos y vendedores codiciosos han estado usando este argumento absurdo prácticamente desde que e-Bay llegó a ser algo. 

Primero lo primero: el punto de referencia para precios de coleccionables es el MERCADO PRIMARIO, representado por distribuidores / vendedores grandes y medianos, los cuales tienen contacto directo con los fabricantes de coleccionables y sus propias tiendas en línea. 

Este principio aplica para artículos recién lanzados Y para artículos más antiguos; en el segundo caso, es la base para establecer un avaluo del artículo en el cual estás interesado para tu colección, pero debes tener en mente otras consideraciones que añaden valor con el tiempo; este valor adicional, no obstante, no tiene nada que ver con especulación, es un aumento gradual y moderado en el precio. 

La plataforma e-Bay, por cierto, es parte del MERCADO SECUNDARIO, porque la gente que publica artículos para subasta / venta allí, son vendedores individuales (revendedores) o negocios pequeños, a saber, INTERMEDIARIOS y en ese sentido, sus precios ya tienen un incremento con respecto a los precios de referencia establecidos por el MERCADO PRIMARIO. 

Además y como he mencionado previamente, acaparadores / especuladores son usuarios habituales de esta plataforma, en realidad no solo con respecto a coleccionables: literalmente alguien puede publicar un rollo de papel higiénico en US$5.000 y esto es permitido por e-Bay pero, ¿puede esto ser considerado un precio de referencia para ese artículo?, tienes que estar mal de la cabeza si piensas así... 

Coleccionables son publicados a precios indignantes o alcanzando valores ridículamente altos en subastas arregladas en e-Bay de forma regular, en consecuencia, está bastante claro que un montón de precaución, investigación y sentido común son indispensables si quieres hacer un trato a través de esta plataforma y conseguir un producto a un precio razonable. 

Entonces, si resulta que ves a algún "revendedor" (estafador) reclamando: "este artículo está publicado en US$ XXXX en e-Bay, así que no puedo cobrar menos de eso por él, porque ese es el precio de referencia" o un comprador incompetente reclamando: "sí, este artículo está barato en realidad, porque lo vi publicado en US$ XXXX en e-Bay", puedes estar seguro que estos individuos simplemente están parloteando basura... 

Bueno, asuntos con respecto a la relación entre nuestra afición e e-Bay, así como otros que abordaré en el futuro, si DIOS permite, no se han acabado; después de todo, soy uno de los muy pocos coleccionistas y blogueros con un enfoque claramente pedagógico y ético en mis reseñas, no es solo acerca de coleccionables, ¿correcto?... 

Lo estoy haciendo de forma gratuita y quiero dejarlo así, pero un dicho reza: "si eres bueno en algo, no lo hagas gratis", así que no des por sentado que mis publicaciones estarán disponibles de forma gratuita para siempre... 

De todas maneras, pienso que es tiempo de chequear mis invitados para esta reseña, así que sigamos adelante, ¿deberíamos?... 

En el par de invitados incluidos para mi publicación, hay un carro de juguete conceptual / de diseñador / de fantasía / original hecho por Hot Wheels, basado muy holgadamente en un Dodge Monaco Sedán Auto de Policía de 1977 - 1978, diseñado por Larry Wood en colaboración con Bob Rosas, llamado para su primer lanzamiento (1978) Highway Patrol, también conocido como Sheriff Patrol, Gleamer Patrol, Fire Chaser y Fire Chief, con al menos 32 iteraciones y usado hasta 2013. 

Está acompañado por un auto de juguete basado en el Ford Crown Victoria Interceptador Policial Sedán (Paquete Comercial de Policía) de 2006, un Sedán de Tamaño Completo 4 Puertas / Vehículo para Aplicación de la Ley, hecho por Matchbox, diseñado por Ryu Asada, con al menos 17 iteraciones para el molde original, 5 iteraciones adicionales para una versión taxi y otras tres con apertura de puertas traseras. 

Conseguí ambos modelos en el mercado secundario, con la ayuda de un amigo mío, colega coleccionista, vendedor privado e importador, hace más o menos 4 años (no simultáneamente, a propósito); el primero pertenece a la Serie Emergency Squad Gift (5) Pack de 1995, parte de la Línea Principal (categoría Regular), mientras que el segundo pertenece a la Serie Supreme Hero Collection de 2015, parte de la categoría Adulta. 

El Sheriff Patrol de Hot Wheels es uno de los dos modelos en el Gift Pack presentando carrocería y chasis en diecast, lo que le da un peso más que decente; el Ford Crown Victoria de 2006 por Matchbox, por otro lado, ofrece carrocería en diecast y chasis en plástico negro, lo cual es decepcionante teniendo en mente el punto de precio, además, la proporción diecast / plástico favorece al plástico, haciéndolo un artículo con sobreprecio desde fábrica.

El nivel de detalle general para ambos modelos es más bien básico, pero en el caso de MBX, es un poco mejor; el trabajo de pintura para ambos fue hecho en negro con acabado brillante, pero es allí donde empiezan las diferencias. 

El modelo de HW presenta una decoración ficticia, bastante genérica, pero hecha con tampos, sobre los paneles laterales, capó y techo, en blanco azul y amarillo; el modelo de MBX presenta una decoración realista basada en las Patrullas de Policía del Condado Kootenai, Idaho, pero fue hecha con la más barata y fea impresión digital en inyección de tinta: de nuevo, esperas más en este punto de precio y Matchbox decepciona con la pobre y mezquina gestión de Mattel; añadí detalles pintados para las luces de señal, luces de cola y barra de luces sobre el techo. 

El modelo de Hot Wheels ofrece interiores en beige, una elección muy peculiar y ventanas tintadas en azul, mientras que el modelo de Matchbox ofrece interiores en gris claro con ventanas transparentes y hay un inserto plástico para la barra de luces sobre el techo. 

Las ruedas plásticas en el modelo de HW presenta diseño de rimes 7 Spoke en cromado y fue hecho en Malasia, mientras que el modelo de MBX ofrece ruedas multiparte presentando diseño de rimes Ultra Max 6 V Spoke Sport en gris metalizado oscuro con labio cromado, llantas en caucho labradas y fue hecho en Tailandia...

My liking for concept / designer / fantasy / original models made by brands of toy cars like Hot Wheels, Matchbox, Majorette and eventually other manufacturers, is out of question for anybody who has been accompanying my journey as collector and blogger since April, 2009... 

Not only because I have appreciated the work and creativity of fellow designers, in this case, in the field of automotive and toy cars design (also concept scale models / replicas), but because this kind of products are the perfect excuse to introduce different kinds of topics in my blog, related with this hobby, the industry around it, the guild of collectionism, etc... 

This time I want to talk about a topic in which there are matters taken for granted, wrongly on top of that most times and the topic is: the relationship between our hobby of collecting and e-Bay, something that entails some interest, I guess... 

Let’s start by establishing that e-Bay was founded in 1995 by Pierre Omidyar, becoming an online platform for auctions, trades and sales between individual sellers (resellers), small business, buyers and bidders. 

Due to its nature, already described briefly, it has been a rather important tool for this hobby, for instance, because it has allowed different kinds of trades between resellers, buyers and collectors around the world. 

In that sense, for some people is the only way to get the stuff they are interested in for their collection or to auction / sell their collectibles in stock worldwide (depending on the side of this hobby you are), with some ease, so its importance in the ecosystem of collectionism is not inconsiderable. 

However, this fact has lead to a misinterpretation of its role in our hobby and the generation of a series of assumptions that have no basis on reality. 

Now, due precisely to the nature of e-Bay, that privileges what has come to be called "free trade" or "self-regulate trading community", this platform has been used as well by swindlers, unscrupulous vendors, traffickers, distributors of counterfeit goods and hoarders / scalpers, something that most people tend to ignore. 

Obviously these factors have serious implications in what you can expect, what you can or cannot do with this platform and it takes away the basis to the matters taken for granted or assumptions about e-Bay of which I want to talk about. 

One of these matters / assumptions is that: "e-Bay is the point of reference when it comes to prices for collectibles", have you heard this piffle?, how many times?, because inept buyers and greedy resellers have been using this nonsensical argument virtually since e-Bay became a thing. 

First thing first: the point of reference for prices of collectibles is the PRIMARY MARKET, represented by large and medium distributors / sellers, which have direct contact with manufacturers of collectibles and their own online stores. 

This principle applies for newly released items AND for older items; in the second case, it’s the basis to establish an appraisal of the item you’re interested in for your collection, but you have to bear in mind other considerations that add value over time; this additional value, nonetheless, doesn’t have anything to do with speculation, it’s a gradual and moderate increase in price. 

The e-Bay platform, by the way, is part of the SECONDARY MARKET, because the people who publish items for auction / sale there, are individual sellers (resellers) or small business, namely, INTERMEDIARIES and in that sense, their prices already have an increase regarding the reference prices established by the PRIMARY MARKET. 

Besides and as I have mentioned previously, hoarders / scalpers are usual users of this platform, actually not only regarding collectibles: literally someone can publish a toilet paper roll in US$5,000 and it’s allowed by e-Bay but, can it be considered a reference price for that item?, you gotta be sick in the head if you think so... 

Collectibles are published at outrageous prices or reaching ridiculously high values in rigged auctions on e-Bay in a regular basis, accordingly, it’s pretty clear that a lot of caution, research and common sense are a must if you want to make a deal through this platform and get a product at a reasonable price. 

Then, if you happen to see some "reseller" (swindler) claiming: "this item is published at US$ XXXX on e-Bay, so I cannot charge less than that for it, because that’s the reference price" or an incompetent buyer claming: "yeah, this item is actually cheap, because I saw it published at US$ XXXX on e-Bay", you can be sure these individuals are just chattering rubbish... 

Well, matters regarding the relationship between our hobby and e-Bay, as well as others I will address in the future, if GOD allows, are not over; after all, I’m one of the very few collectors and bloggers with a clear pedagogical and ethical approach in my reviews, it’s not only about collectibles, right?... 

I’m doing it for free and I want to keep it that way, but a saying claims: "if you’re good at something, don’t do it for free", so don’t take it for granted that my publications will be available for free forever... 

Anyway, I think it’s time to check my guests for this review, so let’s move on, shall we?... 

In the pair of guests included for my publication, there is a concept / designer / fantasy / original toy car made by Hot Wheels, based very loosely in a 1977 - 1978 Dodge Monaco Sedan Police Car, designed by Larry Wood in collaboration with Bob Rosas, named for its first release (1978) Highway Patrol, also known as Sheriff Patrol, Gleamer Patrol, Fire Chaser and Fire Chief, with at least 32 iterations and used until 2013. 

It’s accompanied by a toy car based on the 2006 Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor Sedan (Commercial Police Package), a Full Size 4-Door Sedan / Law Enforcement Vehicle, made by Matchbox, designed by Ryu Asada, with at least 17 iterations for the original mold, 5 additional iterations for a taxi version and another three with rear opening doors. 

I got both models in the secondary market, with the help of a friend of mine, fellow collector, private seller and importer, pretty much 4 years ago (not simultaneously, by the way); the first one belongs to the 1995 Emergency Squad Gift (5) Pack Series, part of the Mainline (Regular category), while the second one belongs to the 2015 Supreme Hero Collection Series, part of the Adult category. 

The Sheriff Patrol by Hot Wheels is one of the two models in the Gift Pack featuring diecast body and chassis, which gives it a more than decent weight; the 2006 Ford Crown Victoria by Matchbox, on the other hand, offers diecast body and black plastic chassis, which is disappointing bearing in mind the price point, besides, the diecast / plastic ratio favors plastic, making it an overpriced item from factory. 

The overall level of detail for both models is rather basic, but in the case of MBX, it’s a little better; the paint job for both was made in black, with glossy finishing, but there is where differences begin. 

The model by HW features a fictitous decoration, pretty generic, but made with tampos, on the side panels, hood and roof, in white, blue and yellow; the model by MBX feature a realistic decoration based on the Police Patrols from Kootenai County, Idaho, but it was made with the cheaper and ugly digital inkjet printing: again, you expect more at this price point and Matchbox disappoints with the poor and petty-minded management of Mattel; I added painted details for the signal lights, tail lights and the light bar on the roof. 

The model by Hot Wheels offers interiors in beige, a very quirk choice and blue tinted windows, while the model by Matchbox offers light gray interiors with clear windows and there is a plastic insert for the light bar on the roof. 

The plastic wheels in the HW model feature 7 Spokes rims design in chrome and it was made in Malaysia, while the MBX model offers multipart wheels featuring Ultra Max 6 V Spokes Sport rims design in dark metallic gray with chrome lip, styled rubber tires and it was made in Thailand...
