There is no doubt that the S Series by Navistar International (currently known as International Motors LLC), was and has been a milestone that set the business standard for this brand, which is now a subsidiary of Traton Group, in turn the trucks division of Volkswagen Group...

This is true even since this, formerly independent company, were known as International Harvester (IH) and that’s to be expected, due to the fact that the S Series started production since 1978, when IH consolidated its previous trucks Lines: IHC LoadStar (medium duty vehicles) and IHC FleetStar (heavy duty vehicles), in a single Series...

While trucks in virtually all their forms have been at the core of business for International, probably the S Series, more precisely its second generation, marked the way forward and it was probably the most successful product, comprising medium and heavy duty trucks, that this brand has had.

Even its exterior design became a point of reference for other truck manufacturers: I find certain similarities in this aspect with vehicles from the same segment and era.

I would mention, in that sense, examples made by: Ford (F700 - F800), Sterling (L7000 - L8000), Freightliner (FL60 - FL70 - FL80), Kenworth (T300 - T400), Volvo (WG), Chevrolet (Kodiak C6500 - C7500 - C8500) or GMC (Topkick C6500 - C7500 - C8500).

I’m featuring this time one of the many configurations you could find of this versatile catalog of trucks and I must clarify that, in the S Series, there was a Line known as 4000, comprised by medium and heavy duty trucks, also the 7100 / 8100 Line of tractor trucks and the 2500 / 2600 Line of severe duty trucks.

To the first Line mentioned belongs my guest for this publication: the 1999 International Navistar 4900 S Series 4x2 Crew Cab - Fire Engine / Pumper Truck, a Heavy Duty, Class 7 Truck / Class A Type 2 (Structural Firefighting in the City) Fire Engine / Fire Appliance / Fire Apparatus.

I must clarify as well, that there is a certain overlap regarding tractor trucks, between the 4000 and 7100 / 8100 Lines, due to a complex stratification of products; the commercial trucks sector is a very diversified market, since you can find a vehicle for almost any kind of work you have in mind.

Now, one of the most widely known application for the S Series, 4000 Line of trucks, was precisely fire appliances and you can still find a lot of them in working condition.

However, since the second generation of this Series and Line was offered between 1989 and 2002, most of them have been replaced by newer models in their respective Fire Departments.

These trucks are acquired by companies specialized in fire appliances, in a commercial chassis / cabin configuration and then receive a customized-to-specific-needs utility body, that in the case of Class A Type 2 vehicles can be either a pumper, a tanker, a responder truck, a wildland / brush truck or a rescue truck / ambulance, rarely other kind of fire apparatus.

Now, bearing in mind that this is not a scale replica, it was impossible for me to find the exact match for my guest, but researching about a possible inspiration, well, I find similarities with utility bodies made by companies in this segment like: Superior, E-One, KME, Pierce or BOE (Boise Mobile Equipment), so maybe it was loosely based on products by one of these renowned brands...

Just in case, you can check other examples of International trucks in my collection, either as toys or as scale replicas here, here and here; I think it’s always revealing to see what the market of collectibles has to offer and compare, but it’s also encouraging, because it lets you know that there are different options, so you don’t have to depend on one or two brands, that while popular, can be quite disappointing lately...

Is there any doubt about my love for fire appliances?, if that’s the case, you could check this blog of mine and you will find a good amount of reviews about them, for instance, looking by the tag Emergency Vehicles or Fire Apparatus, not to mention the ones on the way to be published, because despite my kinda long absence, I’m not planning to leave this blog adrift...

And when it comes to this kind of vehicles, Matchbox has had a good assortment of models that, despite being toy trucks, have a particular charm for me, exception made with the more recent examples, that in most cases have a ridiculously high dose of cheap plastic, hence, represent an insult to the legacy that this brand built around its toy versions of fire appliances...

My guest was called simply International Pumper and its first release was in 1999, as part of the Mainline of Matchbox, it has had at least 52 iterations, including variations, mostly for the Regular category, albeit there were 2 iterations made for Lines in the Adult category; apparently, it was discontinued in 2015.

In general terms, this is a very nice toy truck, with a very good level of detail, specially considering the approximate scale used for it (1:96, yet the chassis claims a 1:100 scale, but you should take it with a pinch of salt always, in the case of toy vehicles).

You can notice the designer involved gave some love to this little marvel and I really appreciate it as experienced adult collector; but not everything is rosy and I will explain later why: the fact that it’s a toy truck doesn’t mean I have low expectations, even more when we are talking about Matchbox and wherever there is meanness, you will see the result...

I got my two samples of this model, throught the secondary market, one of them through a private seller, pretty much 6 years ago, while the other with the help of a friend of mine, fellow collector and importer / private seller, around 9 years ago.

My first sample of this model belongs to the 2013 Matchbox EMT Series, 5-Pack and I already featured another model of this 5-Pack, of which you can read here; by the way, this kind of sets are also part of the Mainline / Regular category.

My second sample, on the other hand, belongs to the 2015 Matchbox On A Mission Supreme Hero Series, which is part of the Adult category and just like in the previous case, I have featured other models of the Series here and here.

Both samples offer diecast body and plastic chassis in silver; as I already mentioned, the overall level of detail is very good, but there is an aspect, among others, I really don’t like: between 1999 and 2009, this toy truck featured a separate plastic insert for the V-shaped light bar at the top of the cabin, which allowed different colors for the windows and the light bar.

Nonetheless, in 2012, the model was reintroduced with a noticeable change: the V-shaped light bar was molded with the windows, in the typical costs-cutting maneuver by Mattel, which obviously detracts from the appearance of this kind of product .

Talking about my second sample, well, it’s a Series from the Adult category, with a price tag five times higher, so you expect some extras and in that sense, a silver chassis instead of a chassis with chrome finishing, is simply not in tune with the price tag, but there are more unfavorable aspects.

Regarding the paint jobs, they were made, in the first case, in red, with glossy finishing, complemented by a decoration with tampos, only on the side panels, in white, black, red and yellow, fictitious (not based on an actual vehicle) and simple, but appropriate; I had to add some painted details for the headlights (that for this photoshoot was not included) and front strobo lights, in silver and copper, as well as for the V-shaped light bar, in silver and copper.

In the second case, the paint job was made in yellow, with a decoration based on an actual Fire Department: the Boone County Fire Protection District, located in the State of Missouri; however, the serious issue with this decoration is that it was made with digital inkjet printing, something unacceptable in an item from the Adult category.

It really doesn’t matter how much the stupid brand promoters out there try to hide this fact, those phonies with very popular blogs and vlogs, which are just sales showcases, with little to no substance...

That’s the kind of stuff that makes serious adult collectors tired and then they abandon these petty-minded brands, which are only thinking in profit and don’t give a damn about their products: sooner or later these brands will become irrelevant and will go bankrupt, no matter how big they are, because of their complete lack of vision and their covetousness...

If you want a good version belonging to a Line in the Adult category, much better and realistic that the one featured here, from the Supreme Heroes Collection Series, you must go back to 1999, when a Line, part of the Matchbox Collectibles - Premiere Fire Series, was released.

This special edition came in a longer and ticker card, printed in full color and along with the model, it was included a nice cardboard box, also printed; the toy truck represented, with some licenses, of course, an actual fire engine of the Fort Wayne Fire Department, featuring a very prolix decoration, with tampos and/or decals: as a whole it makes look the Supreme Heroes version, like a shabby imitation (that costs more than it should)...

Just like in the previous sample, I had to add some painted details for the headlights and front strobo lights, in silver and metallic red, as well as for the V-shaped light bar, in silver, metallic blue and metallic red.

The interiors were worked in white for the first sample and light gray for the second one, with a decent level of detail, the mold includes the lay-flat fire hoses at the top of the utility body, a nice touch, that adds color contrast; the windows are red tinted and clear respectively.

Regarding the wheels, my first sample offers plastic wheels featuring Open Dot Dash rims design, with golden chrome finishing, that somehow combines very well with the red color scheme, while my second sample offers Ultra Max multipart wheels, featuring 5 Spokes Utility rims design in silver, with chrome lip and hub cap, styled synthetic rubber tires and finally, both were made in Thailand...

Ezk 39:23-25 "And the heathen shall know that the house of Israel went into captivity for their iniquity: because they trespassed against me, therefore hid I my face from them, and gave them into the hand of their enemies: so fell they all by the sword. According to their uncleanness and according to their transgressions have I done unto them, and hid my face from them. Therefore thus saith the LORD GOD; now will I bring again the captivity of Jacob, and have mercy upon the whole house of Israel, and will be jealous for my holy name..."

Bruisers, Down & Dirty, Got Speed?, Great 8’s, Haul ’N’ Asphalt, Kool & Kustom, Motor City Muscle, Rebel Rods, Rockin’ Rods, Special Delivery - Lanzadas en 2004), Holiday Rods (2004 - 2009), Ultra Hots (2006 - 2007), Hot Wheels Classics (2005 - 2010), Hot Wheels Garage (Phil’s, Larry’s Garage, 2009 - 2011) y similares.

English version
Continuing with the, I would say, long series of publications regarding the segmentation process of products made by Hot Wheels, particularly since 2000, its implications in the present performance of this brand in the market and its future, I will explore another aspect of this topic...

By the way, if you wanna check what I have been posing about this process, you can read my previous reviews here, here, here, here, here and here, in order to have some context and understand why it’s important...

But returning to the aspect I want to delve into a little bit, 2009 marked a sort of "change of direction" in the features that products by Hot Wheels, belonging properly to the Adult category and since 2018 deceivingly tagged as "premium", were offering since 2000.

The point is that apparently the blue brand of Mattel learned some things, thanks to its experience producing special Lines / Series during that span between 2000 and 2009; some were its own Lines of the Adult category and others were created for big chain retail stores like Target or Wal-mart.

I’m talking about Lines or Series like: Editor’s Choice, a product created for Target, released for 2000 and 2001; another example is a triumvirate of Lines / Series (Cruisin’ America, Motor City Classics and Auto Milestones), made as Wal-Mart Exclusives in 2002.

We can include equally "in house" Lines / Series by Hot Wheels like: Charawheels (2000 - 2003 / 2004), 100% Preferred (2003), Auto Affinity (including the following sub-lines / series: Blvd. Bruisers, Down & Dirty, Got Speed?, Great 8’s, Haul ’N’ Asphalt, Kool & Kustom, Motor City Muscle, Rebel Rods, Rockin’ Rods, Special Delivery - Released in 2004), Holiday Rods (2004 - 2009), Ultra Hots (2006 - 2007), Hot Wheels Classics (2005 - 2010), Hot Wheels Garage (Phil’s, Larry’s Garage, 2009 - 2011) and the like.

All these Lines / Series, in greater or lesser degree, represented initiatives in the right direction to cater the adult collectors market, offering interesting toy cars, featuring proper finishes, including tampos and/or decals, as is to be expected in this kind of items and a higher than average quality, for a change with this brand; of course, with exceptions in certain batches / mixes or specific models, but achieving a very good level in general terms.

Adult collectors, as your host in this blog, noticed these products and we reacted positively to these initiatives, buying accordingly, just because that’s what we want from any brand interested in us.

However, during this period and as it’s the usual policy with Mattel and its diecast toy cars brands, the quality was reduced, the finishes were replaced by other way less satisfactory and we, the adult collectors, noticed that too.

Bearing in mind the situation, several complaints were made public in certain groups, forums and/or blogs (bypassing the opposition of those who pose as collectors, when actually they are just bootlickers, praising Hot Wheels, no matter what this brand puts in the market); the common factor in these complaints was the lack of complete decorations / details for these products, allegedly aimed at adult collectors.

The demands were specifically about: full tampos and/or decals, not only for logos, racing stripes, "meatballs" (circles, usually in white, where are placed the numbers belonging to competition cars), flames, tribals, pinstripes, etc., but also for front, signal and tail lights, plates, windows moldings, etc., features that other brands in this segment, in the same or slightly higher price level, offered by default, but that was not the case with Hot Wheels.

Since the complaints were systematic, finally they found their way to Mattel / Hot Wheels and you might ask who were responsible for these complaints?: buyers?, sellers?, distributors?, collectibles stores?, chain retail stores, perhaps?...

NO, they hardly care; it was us, the adult collectors, the only ones who truly care about this hobby, the only ones who demand quality, instead of mediocrity at excessive prices on top of that, the ones who represent the ultimate reason why this hobby exists.

You know what was the answer of Hot Wheels / Mattel for these just complaints?, it was the implementation of the awful, cheap and subpar inkjet digital printing, massively applied since 2016, but used occasionally since 2011 in Lines / Series like: Nostalgic Brands or Pop Culture.

And this finishing is plaging all the supposed "premium" Lines / Series by the brand of the flaming logo ever since, for the delight of stockholders and financial executives at Mattel, who love to cut production costs at all cost.

Well, the lousy answer from Mattel / Hot Wheels was the reason why many adult collectors, including your host in this blog, abandoned in the short term the entire recent offer of this brand and decided to focus on other brands, even in other kind of collectibles, truly offering quality at reasonable prices, something that the blue brand forgot long ago...

This topic has more aspects to consider and I feel I’m barely beginning, but it’s time to change the spotlight to my guests for this publication, which are more examples of the process of segmentation and one of them is, in fact, a sample of what is wrong currently with the Lines / Series from the Adult category, renamed "premium", in a failed and rather laughable attempt to lie about what these products really are...

All the toy cars featured here are based on the Chevrolet Camaro of the fifth generation, when this admired model was revived after a hiatus between 2002 and 2010.

My first guest is based on the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS, a Midsize 2-Door 2+2 Hartop Coupe - Pony Car / Muscle Car / Sports Car, but with a twist courtesy of Hot Wheels: it was modified as a Law Enforcement Police Unit (LEPU), of which you can see an example by Ford here.

Then you have a heavily modified 2011 Chevrolet Camaro SS, that resembles a Track Only Car or a Racing Car version of the Camaro and I have to admit that is a sample of a good taste modification; finally, my other guest is based on the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Concept Car, a Midsize 2-Door 2+2 Hartop Coupe - Pony Car / Muscle Car / Sports Car / Track Car.

My first guest was designed by Phil Riehlman and released originally for 2009 as a civilian car, with at least 14 iterations, including variations, but it looks like it was discontinued in 2016; the police version was released in 2012, with at least 14 iterations, including variations and it’s used to date; both versions were introduced only for the Mainline (Regular category) and only the civilian version was offered for some Series of the Intermediate category.

My second guest was designed by Josh Henson, it’s the first toy car by this designer in my collection and I really like his work in this model; it has had at least 14 iterations, including variations and it has been used until 2023, only for the Mainline (Regular category).

My last guest, on the other hand, was designed by Brendon Vetuskey, with at least 18 iterations, including variations and it has been used until 2021, for Series in the Deluxe, Adult and Regular categories; most iterations were made for the Mainline, but there were 2 examples for the Deluxe category released as a SEMA Exclusive in 2011 and for a Toy Fair in 2012.

The latter two, by the way, are wrongly tagged as Premium models, but they just don’t have what it takes to be considered properly in that category, despite the ridiculously high prices they reach in the secondary market (speculation at its best, courtesy of scalpers and stupid buyers who keep moving this despicable black market).

I got all of them through the secondary market, with the help of a pair of friends of mine, fellow collectors and importers / private sellers, between 2012 and 2016.

The first two models offer diecast body and plastic chassis (black and golden chrome respectively), in the first model it’s included the front push bar, the dose of diecast is decent, while the last one has full diecast construction (body and chassis), as you expect in an item from the Adult (not Premium) category; the Camaro is well depicted in all these toy cars and the level of detail is decent too.

The paint jobs for the first two examples were made in plain white and pearled white, both with glossy finishing respectively; complemented in my first guest by a decoration on the side and top panels of the body, in red, medium blue and royal blue.

In my second guest the decoration was applied on the side panels and the hood, in purple, black and golden, with a very intricate design, featuring even a gradient, which is very unusual for Mainline items; in both cases, these decoration were made with tampos.

My last guest offers a work where the bare Zamac received translucent red for the top, but the rest of the body received digital inkjet printing for the decoration and details like the tail and signal lights, also the rear plate.

Obviously the result is disappointing, with the lumpy and irregular texture of this kind of printing, that leaves much to be desired and it’s just not in tune with the asking price of this product: the items from the Mainline (Regular category) introduced in this publication look better in that sense and that’s ironic, to say the least; at least the chassis received black paint with satin finishing, but it’s not enough to make this product something worthy of its price tag.

They offer blue tinted, purple tinted and smoked windows respectively; the interiors were worked in black, golden and black respectively, but for the ’10 Camaro SS the mold of the interiors includes the push bar, while in the Custom ’11 Camaro, the rear spoiler is a separate piece in plastic (for 2020, nonetheless, it was molded with the body, in order to reduce production costs, what a surprise!) and for the ’12 Camaro ZL1 Concept, the mold of the interiors includes the front grille, that’s a nice touch.

The first two guests have plastic wheels, regular in front and bigger at the rear, featuring Muscle Car 5 Spokes / Blades rims design, with red chrome lip and Phil Rielhman 5 Spokes rims design, with purple chrome lip respectively; while my third guest offers multipart Real Riders wheels, featuring Black Exotic 5 Spokes rims design, with chrome lip, regular in front and bigger at the rear, including styled synthetic rubber tires; finally, all of them were made in Malaysia (usually, items from the Adult category were made in Thailand and occasionally in China, but since in Malaysia the production costs are lower, guess what?)...

Act 23:23-27 "And he called unto him two centurions, saying: Make ready two hundred soldiers to go to Caesarea, and horsemen threescore and ten, and spearmen two hundred, at the third hour of the night; And provide them beasts, that they may set Paul on, and bring him safe unto Felix the governor. And he wrote a letter after this manner: Claudius Lysias unto the most excellent governor Felix sendeth greeting. This man was taken of the Jews, and should have been killed of them: then came I with an army, and rescued him, having understood that he was a Roman."
