La historia de Johnny Lightning (JL) es probablemente una de las más atípicas en el segmento de coleccionables en diecast o en la industria de coleccionables en conjunto, para ser honesto y este hecho por sí mismo distingue a esta marca del emjambre de fabricantes de modelos en diecast que han ido y venido en un mercado que ha visto varios cambios a través de los años... 

La marca del rayo, a su vez parte de los activos de Topper Toys, una división de la extinta Topper Corporation, empezó operaciones un año después de Hot Wheels (HW), en 1969 y como podrías esperar, sus perfiles, quiero decir, el tipo de modelos, su diseño, acabados de pintura, nivel de detalle, etc., fueron similares... 

En ese sentido, ambas marcas estaban dirigidas claramente a los niños, ambas produjeron autos de juguete en el sentido apropiado del término, con estilo llamativo y una notable inspiración en los Hot Rods, Muscle Cars, Sports Cars, Custom Cars y las culturas automotrices prevalentes de esa época, incluso ambas ofrecieron sets de pistas. 

Ahora, algunas personas que no entienden las particularidades de este segmento de negocio pensarían que JL era solo una imitación de HW, pero si analizas detenidamente descubrirás que, ya que estas marcas estaban apuntando a un mismo mercado, sus productos podrían tener características equivalentes, no es siempre un asunto de espionaje industrial o copia descarada. 

Con apenas un año de diferencia entre su introducción, estas marcas tuvieron un proceso análogo entre la idea inicial y el producto final ofrecido a los consumidores, esto último muestra de una manera patente que ese fue precisamente el caso: aún su foco en el mercadeo y comercialización agresivos fue otro factor común entre Johnny Lightning y Hot Wheels. 

No es poco común ver dos compañías diferentes, de dos lugares diferentes, desarrollando productos similares, especialmente si hay una coincidencia evidente en aspectos cruciales como el mercado que están tratando de alcanzar y/o la época en la que están trabajando en sus respectivos proyectos. 

Pero allí es donde las similitudes terminan, porque en algunos asuntos, más precisamente el uso de tecnologías originales para propulsar sus coches de juguete o el surtido más amplio de modelos, así como un involucramiento con deportes a motor, como Indianapolis 500, JL, la marca de Nueva Yersey, comenzó a tomar distancia de su par californiano. 

Sin embargo, la carrera rutilante de Johnny Lightning como la joya de la corona de Topper Toys fue más bien corta, muy corta, debido a problemas legales serios, relacionados con infracción de derechos de autor y el intento fallido de sacar a la bolsa de valores la empresa, así que las operaciones fueron cerradas en 1971. 

Esta marca desapareció del mercado del diecast por alrededor de 23 años, más que suficiente para sepultar un nombre en la tumba del olvido o eso dicen, pero ese no fue el caso con Johnny Lightning, porque fue revivida en 1994: tal vez no es un caso único, no obstante, es algo bastante poco probable con un desarrollador de carros de juguete en diecast. 

Thomas Lowe y su compañía Playing Mantis fueron los artífices de ese renacimiento, pero observando los artículos ofrecidos en esta nueva etapa, no fue una mera continuación del trabajo previo, sino una reconstrucción de la marca, alejándose de su foco en autos de juguete, hacia un foco en lo que llamaría réplicas a escala de ‘grado coleccionista’. 

Este cambio ocurrió en asunto de 2 años y conociendo un poquitín acerca de las complejidades de esta industria, bueno, esto requiere un montón de trabajo, inversión, investigación y desarrollo, luego el equipo Lowe / Playing Mantis no estaba exactamente jugando: el esfuerzo catapultó Johnny Lightning a nuevas alturas y nosotros, el gremio de coleccionistas adultos, lo notamos. 

Después de 10 años, la marca y su empresa matriz fueron adquiridas por RC2 Corporation, el muy bienvenido foco en réplicas a escala de alta calidad continuó para nuestro deleite, no solo en escalas pequeñas (alrededor de 1:64), sino también con modelos a escala 1:24 muy buenos, basados principalmente en Muscle Cars y Hot Rods. 

Esta etapa duró hasta 2011, cuando RC2 fue adquirida a su vez por el fabricante de juguetes y coleccionables japonés TOMY (que por 2006 fue fusionado con Takara), empezando una era fugaz tras la cual, Johnny Lightning fue descontinuada, de nuevo, en 2013. 

Al año antes del fin de la era RC2, pertenece mi invitado para esta publicación, basado en el Chevrolet Camaro RS Z/28 Funny Car de 1970, un Coupé Fastback de Tamaño Mediano 2 Puertas 2+2 - Pony Car / Muscle Car / Dragster / Funny Car. 

Es parte de la Serie Johnny Lightning 2.0 de 2010, presentando un total de 12 lanzamientos, con 4 modelos cada uno, el ejemplo introducido aquí es del Lanzamiento 3 y el último de estos surtidos fue ofrecido para 2012, así que fue también uno de los últimos productos en este primer resurgimiento. 

La Serie es una mezcla muy interesante de diferentes temáticas alrededor de la Cultura Automotriz (Car Culture): Modern Muscle (Musculosos Modernos), Classic Muscle (Musculosos Clásicos), Muscle Cars (Autos Musculosos), Dragsters, Work in Progress (Trabajo en Progreso), Show Cars (Autos de Espectáculo), Emergency Vehicles (Vehículos de Emergencia), Racing Cars (Autos de Carreras), Demolition Derbie (Autos de Demolición), Utility Vehicles (Vehículos Utilitarios), Everyday Cars (Autos Cotidianos), Imported (Importados), Pickups, Pop Culture Cars (Autos de la Cultura Popular), Family Cars (Autos Familiares), incluso un Zinger (vehículo altamente modificado, tipo Dragster, con un estilo casi caricaturesco) fue incluido en uno de los surtidos. 

Para mí, la Serie Johnny Lightning 2.0 es un compendio de lo que esta marca ha estado ofreciendo desde su primer renacimiento, con réplicas a escala de alta calidad, presentando excelente realismo y acabados, decoraciones intrincadas, ya sea en la forma de coches de serie o coches de carreras, la clase de cosas por las cuales esta marca ha sido justamente apreciada, las cosas que nosotros, los coleccionistas adultos, realmente valoramos. 

Pienso que, con esta Serie, RC2 estaba de alguna forma enviando el mensaje en clave que algo estaba por suceder y algunas personas reclaman que, en la segunda mitad de la década de los 2000 - 2010, el mercado de las réplicas a escala de alta calidad en diecast se empezó a encoger. 

Bueno, lo que estas personas ignoran es que en realidad el gremio de los coleccionistas adultos, quienes están interesados en esta clase de productos, quienes los adquieren, ha sido siempre muy pequeño, luego esa no es la explicación detrás de lo que ocurrió en 2011 y 2013, con esta marca... 

No verás este Chevy Camaro - Funny Car de 1970 muy a menudo y la razón es simple: solo 2 iteraciones han sido lanzadas, la primera es el debút del modelo en 1998, como parte de la Serie Johnny Lightning Funny Car Legends, Lanzamiento 1, un surtido de 6 carros, el cual representaba un vehículo real corrido por Bruce Larson, el USA 1 y el que estoy presentando aquí que, si bien no está basado en un vehículo real, es realmente bonito. 

El modelo ofrece carrocería y chasis en diecast, con gran nivel de detalle; el trabajo de pintura fue hecho en blanco con acabado perlado, complementado por una decoración ficticia que todavía luce realista, quiero decir, algo que podrías ver en un Funny Car real, hecha con tampos y/o calcomanías, como esperas en una verdadera réplica a escala ‘grado coleccionista’ (sin impresión digital en inyección de tinta a la vista, como en el caso de los productos de Hot Wheels) y el chasis fue dejado sin pintar. 

Presenta apertura de carrocería e incluye varios insertos plásticos para el parabrisas, la jaula antivuelco, el timón y las barras de soporte para la carrocería; con respecto a los insertos para el chasis, curiosamente, el plástico negro fue pintado en rojo con acabado mate. 

Creo que, para una parte móvil como las barras de soporte de la carrocería, habría sido mejor dejar el plástico sin pintar, porque con el uso, la pintura se descascaró, como puedes ver en las fotografías: algunas veces menos es mejor. 

Las ruedas son multiparte, presentando diseño de rimes Cragar SS 5 Spokes en blanco, con llantas en caucho sintético labradas, más grandes en la parte trasera, una selección agradable; sin embargo, para un Funny Car, llantas lisas serían más apropiadas, no solo más pequeñas, sino también más delgadas adelante, para más realismo, aunque el producto como un todo es muy satisfactorio y finalmente, fue hecho en China...

The history of Johnny Lightning (JL) is probably one of the most atypical in the diecast collectibles segment or in the collectibles industry as a whole, to be honest and this fact alone sets apart this brand from the swarm of manufacturers of diecast models that have come and go in a market that has seen several changes over the years... 

The brand of the thunderbolt, in turn part of the assets of Topper Toys, a division of the extinct Topper Corporation, started operations one year after Hot Wheels (HW), in 1969 and as you could expect, their profiles, I mean, the kind of models, their design, paint finishes, level of detail, etc., were similar... 

In that sense, both brands were aimed clearly at kids, both produced toy cars in the proper sense of the term, with flashy styling and a remarkable inspiration in Hot Rods, Muscle Cars, Sports Cars, Custom Cars and the prevalent car cultures of that time, even they both offered track sets. 

Now, some people who do not understand the particularities of this business segment would think that JL was just a copycat of HW, but if you analize it carefully you’ll find out that since these brands were pointing to the same market, their products could have equivalent features, it’s not always a matter of industrial espionage or blatant copy. 

With barely a year of difference betweeen their introduction, these brands had an analog process between the initial idea and the final product offered to consumers, the latter shows in a patent manner that was precisely the case: even their focus on aggressive marketing and merchandising was another common factor between Johnny Lightning and Hot Wheels. 

It’s not uncommon to see two different companies, from two different places, developing similar products, specially if there is an evident coincidence in crucial aspects like the market they are trying to reach and/or the time they are working on their respective projects. 

But there is where the similarities end, because in some matters, more precisely the use of original technologies to propel its toy cars or the wider assortment of models, as well as its involvement with motorsports, like Indianapolis 500, JL, the brand from New Yersey, started to take distance from its Californian peer. 

However, the glittering career of Johnny Lightning as the gem in the Topper Toys crown was rather short, very short, due to some serious legal issues, related with copyright infringement and the failed attempt to take the company public, so operations were closed in 1971. 

This brand vanished from the diecast market for around 23 years, more than enough to bury a name in the tomb of oblivion or so they say, but that was not the case with Johnny Lightning, because it was revived in 1994: maybe it’s not an unique case, nonetheless, it’s something quite unlikely with a developer of diecast toy cars. 

Thomas Lowe and his company Playing Mantis were the architects of this revival, but looking at the items offered in this new stage, it was not a mere continuation of the previous work, but a rebuild of the brand, moving away from the focus on toy cars, towards a focus on what I would call ‘collector’s grade’ scale replicas. 

This shift happened in a matter of 2 years and knowing a little bit about the intrincacies of this industry, well, it requires a lot of work, investment, research and development, so the team Lowe / Playing Mantis was not exactly playing: the effort catapulted Johnny Lightning to brand new highs and we, the guild of adult collectors, noticed it. 

After 10 years, the brand and its parent company were acquired by RC2 Corporation, the very welcome focus on high quality scale replicas continued for our delight, not only in small scales (around 1:64), but also with very good 1:24 scale models, based mainly on Muscle Cars and Hot Rods. 

This stage lasted until 2011, when RC2 was in turn acquired by the Japanese toy and collectibles manufacturer TOMY (that by 2006 was merged with Takara), starting a fleeting era after which, Johnny Lightning was discontinued, again, in 2013. 

To the year before the end of the RC2 era, belongs my guest for this publication, based on the 1970 Chevrolet Camaro RS Z/28 Funny Car, a Midsize 2-Door 2+2 Fastback Coupe - Pony Car / Muscle Car / Dragster / Funny Car. 

It’s part of the 2011 Johnny Lightning 2.0 Series, featuring a total of 12 Releases, with 4 models each one, the example introduced here is from the Release 3 and the last one of these assortments was offered for 2012, so it was also one of the last products in this first resurgence. 

The Series is a very interesting mix of different themes around Car Culture: Modern Muscle, Classic Muscle, Muscle Cars, Dragsters, Work in Progress, Show Cars, Emergency Vehicles, Racing Cars, Demolition Derbie, Utility Vehicles, Everyday Cars, Imported, Pickups, Pop Culture Cars, Family Cars, even a Zinger (heavily modified vehicle, Dragster type, with a nearly toonish styling) was included in one of the assortments. 

For me, the Johnny Lightning 2.0 Series is a compendium of what this brand has been offering since this first revival, with high quality scale replicas, featuring excellent realism and finishes, intricate decorations, either in the form of stock cars or racing cars, the kind of things for which this brand is rightly appreciated, the stuff that we, adult collectors, really value. 

I think that with this Series, RC2 was somehow sending the message in code that something was about to happen and some people claim that in the second half of the 2000 - 2010 decade, the market of high quality diecast scale replicas started to shrink. 

Well, what these people ignore is that actually the guild of adult collectors, the ones interested in this kind of products, the ones who acquire them, has been always very small, so that was not the true explanation behind what happened in 2011 and 2013, with this brand... 

You will not see this 1970 Chevy Camaro - Funny Car so often and the reason is simple: only 2 iterations has been released, the first one is the debut of the model in 1998, as part of the Johnny Lightning Funny Car Legends Series, Release 1, an assortment of 6 cars, which represented an actual vehicle raced by Bruce Larson, the USA 1 and the one I’m featuring here that, while not based on an actual vehicle, is really nice. 

The model offers diecast body and chassis, with great level of detail; the paint job was made in white with pearled finishing, complemented by a fictitious decoration that still looks realistic, I mean, something you could see on an actual Funny Car, made with tampos and/or decals, as you expect in a true ‘collector’s grade’ scale replica (without digital inkjet printing in sight, as in the case of Hot Wheels products) and the chassis was left unpainted. 

It features opening body and includes several plastic inserts for the windshield, roll cage, steering wheel and the body support rods; regarding the inserts for the chassis, curiously, the black plastic was painted red with matte finishing. 

I think that, for a moving part like the body support rods, it would have been much better to leave the plastic unpainted, because with use, the paint chipped, as you can see in the pictures: sometimes less is better. 

The wheels are multipart, featuring Cragar SS 5 Spokes rims design in white, with styled synthetic rubber tires, bigger at the rear, a nice selection; however, for a Funny Car, slick tires would be more appropiate, not only smaller, but also thinner in front, for more realism, albeit the product as a whole is very satisfying and finally, it was made in China...

He tenido un interés especial en las camionetas pickup desde que puedo recordar en mis años mozos, sé que he dicho esto varias veces en reseñas anteriores, pero esto explica porque hay una presencia recurrente de esta clase de vehículos en mi blog o porque son parte de mi colección; además, este hecho ayuda a entender porque mi gusto por las camionetas pickup no es un asunto de seguir tendencias o modas manipuladoras, sino un interés genuino... 

Después de todo, en nuestro gremio, seguir tendencias ciegamente es una situación común entre personas que se hacen pasar por coleccionistas o aspirantes a coleccionistas y hablando en términos generales, es una práctica común entre personas con poco o ningún pensamiento crítico... 

Poco a poco estuve explorando el catálogo de diferentes marcas de modelos en diecast, incluí en mi búsqueda tanto réplicas a escala como autos de juguete; pero eso no habría ocurrido de no ser por mi encuentro con Johnny Lightning, en el segundo trimestre de 2012, apenas 3 años después que decidí convertirme en coleccionista adulto. 

De hecho, la marca del rayo me hizo considerar la posibilidad de incluir modelos a escala en diecast y eventualmente coches de juguete en mi colección, en una época cuando estos artículos no tenían el más mínimo interés para mí; sí, incluso teniendo en mente que vehículos de todos los tipos eran atractivos para mí desde hace mucho tiempo... 

Mis pesquisas empezaron precisamente con Johnny Lightning, una marca con la cual estaba realmente intrigado y al principio la tarea fue algo complicada, ya que JL era casi desconocida en el mercado doméstico, un nicho muy, muy pequeño entre coleccionistas locales; incluso en el mercado internacional, en ese momento, esa marca era poco conocida. 

Mi primer escarceo con esta clase de vehículos hechos por JL fue a través de modelos incluidos en Boxsets de 4 Carros, que aparentemente fueron populares alrededor de 2002 y que vine a conocer 10 años más tarde; estos Boxsets en efecto ofrecían una bonita selección de modelos, con una temática particular. 

Comparado con el primer modelo en diecast del cual me enamoré en mi infancia, un auto de juguete hecho por Matchbox, del cual conseguí un artículo similar después que llegué a ser coleccionista adulto y puedes leer acerca de él aquí, las camionetas pickup ofrecidas por Johnny Lightning eran notablemente superiores en cualquier aspecto considerado. 

Por cierto, para esta publicación, incluí en la sesión de fotos los modelos de pickup por JL que adquirí previamente y puedes ver que hay una consistencia perceptible en la calidad general de estos artículos: ese es el factor que fue lo suficientemente convincente para hacerme cambiar de parecer, con el fin de incluir una línea más en mi colección, con todas las implicaciones que esto tiene. 

Y bueno, calidad es algo que para algunas marcas grandes y populares es simplemente un lema que no se refleja en sus productos, pero en el caso de Johnny Lightning, es algo que esta marca está persiguiendo intencionalmente y presentando en sus productos, con más bien pocas excepciones, como puedes esperar de productos de la categoría Premium. 

Mi invitada o debería decir invitados, pertenecen a la Serie Gone Fishing de 2017, Lanzamiento 1, Versión A; la pickup incluida está basada en la Chevrolet C10 (C1434) Cabina Regular Fleetside Platón Corto (6 1/2 Pies), una Camioneta Pickup de Tamaño Completo 1/2 Tonelada Clase 1 para Trabajo Liviano, que pertenece a la primera generación de la Serie C/K. 

Pero esta pickup no está sola, NO, está acompañada por un complemento genial, basado en el Bote MasterCraft X-10 (Sky / Surf / Wakeboarding) (21 Pies) e incluyendo, por añadidura, su respectivo Remolque para Bote de Eje Tandem, para un set que es verdaderamente interesante y tentador. 

Esta vez no profundizaré en el trasfondo de la Chevrolet C10 pickup de 1965, aunque puedes encontrar una buena introducción en una de mis reseñas previas, donde su contraparte GMC es presentada, de la cual puedes leer aquí y con respecto al bote MasterCraft X-10 de 2001, si DIOS permite, habrá tiempo para eso en publicaciones futuras; en su lugar, me enfocaré en el set en sí y sus características principales. 

Conseguí este artículo a través del mercado secundario, con la ayuda de un amigo mío, colega coleccionista e importador / vendedor privado, hace más o menos 7 años; debo confesar que estaba ansioso de obtener al menos un set de esta Serie, simplemente porque vehículos CON remolques son fascinantes para mí y parte de la razón para eso probablemente es que no los vemos muy a menudo en mi tierra natal. 

Otra parte del encanto que estos sets tienen, es el potencial de aparejar tanto el vehículo como el remolque con otros vehículos / remolques en tu colección; bueno, ya que este fue el primer set de este tipo, quiero decir, artículos de la categoría Premium, me motivó a conseguir más productos con un perfil similar. 

Eso es lo que yo llamaría un esfuerzo legítimo de impulsar la ventas para una compañía que ofrece productos de calidad, en lugar de vender basura sobrevalorada y recurrir a campañas de mercadeo agresivas para hacerlo, como es la práctica para algunas marcas grandes en este y otros segmentos del mercado... 

Con respecto a la pickup Chevrolet C10 de 1965, este modelo fue ofrecido originalmente desde 2005, como parte de la Serie Johnny Lightning Working Class Trucks and SUV’s, Lanzamiento 1; ha tenido alrededor de 47 iteraciones entre 2005 y 2023, en versiones Fleetside y Stepside, pero también como camioneta grúa (Fleetside) e incluso como Zinger. 

El trabajo en los moldes para la cabina / frente y el platón / caja, que son piezas separadas, es realmente bueno, con proporciones cuidadosas, tiene apertura de capó y bahía del motor detallada, para una réplica a escala realista y fiel en escala 1:64, una característica que no siempre está disponible para modelos hechos por Johnny Lightning, especialmente cuando estamos hablando de camionetas pickup, habitualmente representadas en escalas más pequeñas; el chasis para este modelo, por otro lado, está en el lado simplista del espectro en términos de nivel de detalle, pero es más que decente. 

Con respecto al bote, del cual habrá más información en otras reseñas y que fue desarrollado en una escala más pequeña (1:77), el casco está hecho en diecast, mientras que la cubierta y la cabina fueron hechas en plástico, presentando montones de detalles y varios insertos plásticos para el parabrisas, pasamanos, timón, silla del timonel / piloto, torre (marco tubular por encima de la cabina, donde el bimini - techo de lona, luces esparcidoras y speakers están ubicados). 

El Remolque para Bote de Eje Tandem fue hecho enteramente en plástico, es muy detallado e incluye un inserto plástico para la rueda jockey (ubicada al frente y usada cuando el remolque no está unido al vehículo de remolque). 

Hablando sobre el trabajo de pintura, un esquema de colores de dos tonos: azul pastel y blanco, fue seleccionado y pienso que luce fantástico, particularmente apropiado para una camioneta pickup del 65, donde el azul pastel es protagonista, pero luciendo increíblemente bien en el bote que es más reciente y donde el blanco es protagonista en su lugar. 

Está complementado por tampos y/o calcomanías extensivas, muy bien aplicados, para luces frontales, de señal, de cola, parrilla frontal, manijas de las puertas, limpiaparabrisas, emblemas en los paneles laterales, molduras de las ventanas, la decoración simple pero realmente agradable para el bote, en la parte superior del casco, incluso la cubierta recibió toques de pintura en azul oscuro con acabado metalizado, la torre recibió acabado cromado y la estructura del remolque fue pintada completamente en azul pastel también. 

Quiero decir, Johnny Lightning nunca ha sido miserable cuando se trata de acabados para sus productos: no estamos hablando de Hot Wheels o Matchbox (y en menor grado otras marcas en este sector), con sus políticas de recorte de costos abusivas, NO, JL conoce realmente el mercado al que le está apuntando y, hasta donde sé, esta última marca no recurriría a acabados más baratos como impresión digital en inyección de tinta y tácticas similares. 

Esa es la diferencia entre usar un aparato publicitario enorme, bien aceitado, pero engañoso, con el fin de tratar de convencer coleccionistas adultos que estás enfocado en ellos y demostrar en realidad que estás enfocado en los coleccionistas adultos con productos de calidad, como lo hace Johnny Lightning...

I have had a special interest in pickup trucks since as far as I can remember in my younger years, I know I have said this several times in previous reviews, but it explains why there is a recurrent presence of this kind of vehicles in my blog or why they are part of my collection; besides, this fact helps to understand why my taste for pickup trucks is not a matter following manipulative trends or fads, but a genuine interest... 

After all, in our guild, following trends blindly is a common situation among people posing as collectors or collectors wannabes and talking in general terms, it’s a common practice among people with little to no critical thinking... 

Little by little I was exploring the catalog of different brands of diecast models, I included in my search both scale replicas and toy cars; but that wouldn’t had happened if not for my encounter with Johnny Lightning, in the second quarter of 2012, barely 3 years after I decided to become adult collector. 

In fact, the brand of the lightning bolt made me consider the possibility of including diecast scale models and eventually diecast toy cars in my collection, at a time when these items didn’t have the slightest interest for me; yeah, even bearing in mind that vehicles of all kinds were appealing for me since long ago... 

My investigations started precisely with Johnny Lightning, a brand with which I was really intrigued and at first the task was kinda complicated, since JL was almost unknown in the domestic market, a very, very small niche among local diecast collectors; even in the international market, at that moment, this brand was little known. 

My first dabble with this kind of vehicles made by JL was through models included in 4-Cars Boxsets, that seemingly were popular around 2002 and that I came to know 10 years later; these Boxsets indeed offered a very nice selection of models, with a particular theme. 

Compared with the first diecast model, with which I fell in love in my infancy, a toy car made by Matchbox of which I got a similar item after I became adult collector and you can read about it here, the pickup trucks offered by Johnny Lightning were noticeably superior in any aspect considered. 

By the way, for this publication, I included in the photoshoot the pickup models by JL I acquired previously and you can see there is a perceivable consistency in the overall quality of these items: that’s the factor that was compelling enough to make me change my mind, in order to include one more line in my collection, with all the implications it has. 

And well, quality is something that for some big and popular brands is just a motto that doesn’t reflect in its products, but in the case of Johnny Lightning, it’s something this brand is pursuing intentionally and featuring in its products, with rather few exceptions, as you could expect from products of the Premium category. 

My guest or should I say guests, belong to the 2017 Gone Fishing Series, Release 1, Version A; the pickup included is based on the 1965 Chevrolet C10 (C1434) Regular Cab Fleetside Short Bed (6 1/2 Ft.), a Full Size 1/2 Ton Class 1 Light Duty Pickup Truck, that belongs to the first generation of the C/K Series. 

But this pickup is not alone, NO, it’s accompanied by a cool complement, based on the 2001 MasterCraft X-10 (Sky / Surf / Wakeboarding) Boat (21 Ft.) and including, for good measure, its respective Tandem Axle Boat Trailer, for a set that is truly interesting and enticing. 

This time I will not delve into the background of the 1965 Chevrolet C10 pickup, albeit you can find a good introduction in one of my previous reviews, where its GMC counterpart is featured, of which you can read here and regarding the 2001 MasterCraft X-10 boat, if GOD allows, there will be time for that in future publications; instead, I will focus on the set itself and its main features. 

I got this item through the secondary market, with the help of a friend of mine, fellow collector and importer / private seller, pretty much 7 years ago; I must confess I was eager to get at least one set of this Series, just because vehicles WITH trailers are fascinating for me and part of the reason for that probably is that we don’t see them so often in my homeland. 

Other part of the charm that these sets have, is the potential of pairing both vehicle and trailer with other vehicles / trailers in your collection; well, since this was my first set of this kind, I mean, items from the Premium category, it motivated me to get more products with a similar profile. 

That’s what I would call a legimate effort to boost sales for a company that offers quality products, instead of selling overpriced rubbish and resorting to aggressive marketing campaigns to do so, as is the practice for some big brands in this and other segments of market... 

Regarding the 1965 Chevrolet C10 pickup, this model was offered originally since 2005, as part of the Johnny Lightning Working Class Trucks and SUV’s Series, Release 1; it has had around 47 iterations between 2005 and 2023, in Fleetside and Stepside versions, but also as tow truck (Fleetside) and even as Zinger. 

The work on the molds for the cabin / front and the bed / box, which are separated pieces, is really good, with careful proportions, it has opening hood and detailed engine bay, for a realistic and faithful scale replica in 1:64 scale, a feature that is not always available for models made by Johnny Lightning, specially when we are talking about pickup trucks, usually represented in smaller scales; the chassis for this model, on the other hand, is in the simplistic side of the spectrum in terms of detail level, but it’s more than decent. 

Regarding the boat, of which there will be more information in other reviews and that was developed in a smaller scale (1:77), the hull is made in diecast, while the deck and cockpit were made in plastic, featuring lots of details and several plastic inserts for windshield, handrails, helm, helmsman seat, tower (tubular frame on top of the cockpit, were the bimini - canvas top, spreader lights and speakers are placed). 

The Tandem Axle Boat Trailer was made enterely in plastic, it’s very detailed and includes a plastic insert for the jockey wheel (placed in front and used when the trailer is not attached to the tow vehicle). 

Talking about the paint job, a two tones color scheme: pastel blue and white, was selected and I think it looks fantastic, particularly appropriate for a 65 pickup truck, were the pastel blue is protagonist, but looking incredibly good in the boat that is more recent and where the white is protagonist instead. 

It’s complemented by extensive tampos and/or decals, very well applied, for front, signal, tail lights, front grille, door handles, wiper washers, emblems on the side panels, windows moldings, the simple but really nice decoration for the boat, at the top of the hull, even the deck received painted touches in dark blue with metallic finishing, the tower received chrome finishing and the structure of the trailer was completely painted in pastel blue too. 

I mean, Johnny Lightning has never been paltry when it comes to finishings for its products: we are not talking about Hot Wheels or Matchbox (and in lesser degreee other brands in this sector), with their abusive cost cutting policies, NO, JL knows really well the market they are targeting at and, as far as I know, the latter brand wouldn’t resort to cheaper finishings like digital inkjet printing and the like tactics. 

That’s the difference between using a huge, well oiled, but deceiving advertising apparatus, in order to try to convince adult collectors that you’re focused on them and actually demonstrate that you’re focused on adult collectors with quality products, like Johnny Lightning does... 

The interiors for the pickup were worked in black, simple but detailed; there are multipart wheels both for the pickup and the trailer, featuring Classic Steelies rims design in white, a perfect match for an old truck with stock look, styled synthetic rubber tires and Cragar SS 5 Spokes rims design in chrome, with slick plastic tires for the trailer, respectively; finally, they were made in China...
