He tenido un interés especial en las camionetas pickup desde que puedo recordar en mis años mozos, sé que he dicho esto varias veces en reseñas anteriores, pero esto explica porque hay una presencia recurrente de esta clase de vehículos en mi blog o porque son parte de mi colección; además, este hecho ayuda a entender porque mi gusto por las camionetas pickup no es un asunto de seguir tendencias o modas manipuladoras, sino un interés genuino... 

Después de todo, en nuestro gremio, seguir tendencias ciegamente es una situación común entre personas que se hacen pasar por coleccionistas o aspirantes a coleccionistas y hablando en términos generales, es una práctica común entre personas con poco o ningún pensamiento crítico... 

Poco a poco estuve explorando el catálogo de diferentes marcas de modelos en diecast, incluí en mi búsqueda tanto réplicas a escala como autos de juguete; pero eso no habría ocurrido de no ser por mi encuentro con Johnny Lightning, en el segundo trimestre de 2012, apenas 3 años después que decidí convertirme en coleccionista adulto. 

De hecho, la marca del rayo me hizo considerar la posibilidad de incluir modelos a escala en diecast y eventualmente coches de juguete en mi colección, en una época cuando estos artículos no tenían el más mínimo interés para mí; sí, incluso teniendo en mente que vehículos de todos los tipos eran atractivos para mí desde hace mucho tiempo... 

Mis pesquisas empezaron precisamente con Johnny Lightning, una marca con la cual estaba realmente intrigado y al principio la tarea fue algo complicada, ya que JL era casi desconocida en el mercado doméstico, un nicho muy, muy pequeño entre coleccionistas locales; incluso en el mercado internacional, en ese momento, esa marca era poco conocida. 

Mi primer escarceo con esta clase de vehículos hechos por JL fue a través de modelos incluidos en Boxsets de 4 Carros, que aparentemente fueron populares alrededor de 2002 y que vine a conocer 10 años más tarde; estos Boxsets en efecto ofrecían una bonita selección de modelos, con una temática particular. 

Comparado con el primer modelo en diecast del cual me enamoré en mi infancia, un auto de juguete hecho por Matchbox, del cual conseguí un artículo similar después que llegué a ser coleccionista adulto y puedes leer acerca de él aquí, las camionetas pickup ofrecidas por Johnny Lightning eran notablemente superiores en cualquier aspecto considerado. 

Por cierto, para esta publicación, incluí en la sesión de fotos los modelos de pickup por JL que adquirí previamente y puedes ver que hay una consistencia perceptible en la calidad general de estos artículos: ese es el factor que fue lo suficientemente convincente para hacerme cambiar de parecer, con el fin de incluir una línea más en mi colección, con todas las implicaciones que esto tiene. 

Y bueno, calidad es algo que para algunas marcas grandes y populares es simplemente un lema que no se refleja en sus productos, pero en el caso de Johnny Lightning, es algo que esta marca está persiguiendo intencionalmente y presentando en sus productos, con más bien pocas excepciones, como puedes esperar de productos de la categoría Premium. 

Mi invitada o debería decir invitados, pertenecen a la Serie Gone Fishing de 2017, Lanzamiento 1, Versión A; la pickup incluida está basada en la Chevrolet C10 (C1434) Cabina Regular Fleetside Platón Corto (6 1/2 Pies), una Camioneta Pickup de Tamaño Completo 1/2 Tonelada Clase 1 para Trabajo Liviano, que pertenece a la primera generación de la Serie C/K. 

Pero esta pickup no está sola, NO, está acompañada por un complemento genial, basado en el Bote MasterCraft X-10 (Sky / Surf / Wakeboarding) (21 Pies) e incluyendo, por añadidura, su respectivo Remolque para Bote de Eje Tandem, para un set que es verdaderamente interesante y tentador. 

Esta vez no profundizaré en el trasfondo de la Chevrolet C10 pickup de 1965, aunque puedes encontrar una buena introducción en una de mis reseñas previas, donde su contraparte GMC es presentada, de la cual puedes leer aquí y con respecto al bote MasterCraft X-10 de 2001, si DIOS permite, habrá tiempo para eso en publicaciones futuras; en su lugar, me enfocaré en el set en sí y sus características principales. 

Conseguí este artículo a través del mercado secundario, con la ayuda de un amigo mío, colega coleccionista e importador / vendedor privado, hace más o menos 7 años; debo confesar que estaba ansioso de obtener al menos un set de esta Serie, simplemente porque vehículos CON remolques son fascinantes para mí y parte de la razón para eso probablemente es que no los vemos muy a menudo en mi tierra natal. 

Otra parte del encanto que estos sets tienen, es el potencial de aparejar tanto el vehículo como el remolque con otros vehículos / remolques en tu colección; bueno, ya que este fue el primer set de este tipo, quiero decir, artículos de la categoría Premium, me motivó a conseguir más productos con un perfil similar. 

Eso es lo que yo llamaría un esfuerzo legítimo de impulsar la ventas para una compañía que ofrece productos de calidad, en lugar de vender basura sobrevalorada y recurrir a campañas de mercadeo agresivas para hacerlo, como es la práctica para algunas marcas grandes en este y otros segmentos del mercado... 

Con respecto a la pickup Chevrolet C10 de 1965, este modelo fue ofrecido originalmente desde 2005, como parte de la Serie Johnny Lightning Working Class Trucks and SUV’s, Lanzamiento 1; ha tenido alrededor de 47 iteraciones entre 2005 y 2023, en versiones Fleetside y Stepside, pero también como camioneta grúa (Fleetside) e incluso como Zinger. 

El trabajo en los moldes para la cabina / frente y el platón / caja, que son piezas separadas, es realmente bueno, con proporciones cuidadosas, tiene apertura de capó y bahía del motor detallada, para una réplica a escala realista y fiel en escala 1:64, una característica que no siempre está disponible para modelos hechos por Johnny Lightning, especialmente cuando estamos hablando de camionetas pickup, habitualmente representadas en escalas más pequeñas; el chasis para este modelo, por otro lado, está en el lado simplista del espectro en términos de nivel de detalle, pero es más que decente. 

Con respecto al bote, del cual habrá más información en otras reseñas y que fue desarrollado en una escala más pequeña (1:77), el casco está hecho en diecast, mientras que la cubierta y la cabina fueron hechas en plástico, presentando montones de detalles y varios insertos plásticos para el parabrisas, pasamanos, timón, silla del timonel / piloto, torre (marco tubular por encima de la cabina, donde el bimini - techo de lona, luces esparcidoras y speakers están ubicados). 

El Remolque para Bote de Eje Tandem fue hecho enteramente en plástico, es muy detallado e incluye un inserto plástico para la rueda jockey (ubicada al frente y usada cuando el remolque no está unido al vehículo de remolque). 

Hablando sobre el trabajo de pintura, un esquema de colores de dos tonos: azul pastel y blanco, fue seleccionado y pienso que luce fantástico, particularmente apropiado para una camioneta pickup del 65, donde el azul pastel es protagonista, pero luciendo increíblemente bien en el bote que es más reciente y donde el blanco es protagonista en su lugar. 

Está complementado por tampos y/o calcomanías extensivas, muy bien aplicados, para luces frontales, de señal, de cola, parrilla frontal, manijas de las puertas, limpiaparabrisas, emblemas en los paneles laterales, molduras de las ventanas, la decoración simple pero realmente agradable para el bote, en la parte superior del casco, incluso la cubierta recibió toques de pintura en azul oscuro con acabado metalizado, la torre recibió acabado cromado y la estructura del remolque fue pintada completamente en azul pastel también. 

Quiero decir, Johnny Lightning nunca ha sido miserable cuando se trata de acabados para sus productos: no estamos hablando de Hot Wheels o Matchbox (y en menor grado otras marcas en este sector), con sus políticas de recorte de costos abusivas, NO, JL conoce realmente el mercado al que le está apuntando y, hasta donde sé, esta última marca no recurriría a acabados más baratos como impresión digital en inyección de tinta y tácticas similares. 

Esa es la diferencia entre usar un aparato publicitario enorme, bien aceitado, pero engañoso, con el fin de tratar de convencer coleccionistas adultos que estás enfocado en ellos y demostrar en realidad que estás enfocado en los coleccionistas adultos con productos de calidad, como lo hace Johnny Lightning... 

Los interiores para la pickup fueron trabajados en negro, simples pero detallados; hay ruedas multiparte tanto para la pickup como para el remolque, presentando diseño de rimes Classic Steelies en blanco, una combinación perfecta para una camioneta antigua con pinta de concesionario, llantas en caucho sintético labradas y diseño de rimes Cragar SS 5 Spokes en cromado, con llantas plásticas lisas para el remolque, respectivamente; finalmente, fueron hechos en China...

I have had a special interest in pickup trucks since as far as I can remember in my younger years, I know I have said this several times in previous reviews, but it explains why there is a recurrent presence of this kind of vehicles in my blog or why they are part of my collection; besides, this fact helps to understand why my taste for pickup trucks is not a matter following manipulative trends or fads, but a genuine interest... 

After all, in our guild, following trends blindly is a common situation among people posing as collectors or collectors wannabes and talking in general terms, it’s a common practice among people with little to no critical thinking... 

Little by little I was exploring the catalog of different brands of diecast models, I included in my search both scale replicas and toy cars; but that wouldn’t had happened if not for my encounter with Johnny Lightning, in the second quarter of 2012, barely 3 years after I decided to become adult collector. 

In fact, the brand of the lightning bolt made me consider the possibility of including diecast scale models and eventually diecast toy cars in my collection, at a time when these items didn’t have the slightest interest for me; yeah, even bearing in mind that vehicles of all kinds were appealing for me since long ago... 

My investigations started precisely with Johnny Lightning, a brand with which I was really intrigued and at first the task was kinda complicated, since JL was almost unknown in the domestic market, a very, very small niche among local diecast collectors; even in the international market, at that moment, this brand was little known. 

My first dabble with this kind of vehicles made by JL was through models included in 4-Cars Boxsets, that seemingly were popular around 2002 and that I came to know 10 years later; these Boxsets indeed offered a very nice selection of models, with a particular theme. 

Compared with the first diecast model, with which I fell in love in my infancy, a toy car made by Matchbox of which I got a similar item after I became adult collector and you can read about it here, the pickup trucks offered by Johnny Lightning were noticeably superior in any aspect considered. 

By the way, for this publication, I included in the photoshoot the pickup models by JL I acquired previously and you can see there is a perceivable consistency in the overall quality of these items: that’s the factor that was compelling enough to make me change my mind, in order to include one more line in my collection, with all the implications it has. 

And well, quality is something that for some big and popular brands is just a motto that doesn’t reflect in its products, but in the case of Johnny Lightning, it’s something this brand is pursuing intentionally and featuring in its products, with rather few exceptions, as you could expect from products of the Premium category. 

My guest or should I say guests, belong to the 2017 Gone Fishing Series, Release 1, Version A; the pickup included is based on the 1965 Chevrolet C10 (C1434) Regular Cab Fleetside Short Bed (6 1/2 Ft.), a Full Size 1/2 Ton Class 1 Light Duty Pickup Truck, that belongs to the first generation of the C/K Series. 

But this pickup is not alone, NO, it’s accompanied by a cool complement, based on the 2001 MasterCraft X-10 (Sky / Surf / Wakeboarding) Boat (21 Ft.) and including, for good measure, its respective Tandem Axle Boat Trailer, for a set that is truly interesting and enticing. 

This time I will not delve into the background of the 1965 Chevrolet C10 pickup, albeit you can find a good introduction in one of my previous reviews, where its GMC counterpart is featured, of which you can read here and regarding the 2001 MasterCraft X-10 boat, if GOD allows, there will be time for that in future publications; instead, I will focus on the set itself and its main features. 

I got this item through the secondary market, with the help of a friend of mine, fellow collector and importer / private seller, pretty much 7 years ago; I must confess I was eager to get at least one set of this Series, just because vehicles WITH trailers are fascinating for me and part of the reason for that probably is that we don’t see them so often in my homeland. 

Other part of the charm that these sets have, is the potential of pairing both vehicle and trailer with other vehicles / trailers in your collection; well, since this was my first set of this kind, I mean, items from the Premium category, it motivated me to get more products with a similar profile. 

That’s what I would call a legimate effort to boost sales for a company that offers quality products, instead of selling overpriced rubbish and resorting to aggressive marketing campaigns to do so, as is the practice for some big brands in this and other segments of market... 

Regarding the 1965 Chevrolet C10 pickup, this model was offered originally since 2005, as part of the Johnny Lightning Working Class Trucks and SUV’s Series, Release 1; it has had around 47 iterations between 2005 and 2023, in Fleetside and Stepside versions, but also as tow truck (Fleetside) and even as Zinger. 

The work on the molds for the cabin / front and the bed / box, which are separated pieces, is really good, with careful proportions, it has opening hood and detailed engine bay, for a realistic and faithful scale replica in 1:64 scale, a feature that is not always available for models made by Johnny Lightning, specially when we are talking about pickup trucks, usually represented in smaller scales; the chassis for this model, on the other hand, is in the simplistic side of the spectrum in terms of detail level, but it’s more than decent. 

Regarding the boat, of which there will be more information in other reviews and that was developed in a smaller scale (1:77), the hull is made in diecast, while the deck and cockpit were made in plastic, featuring lots of details and several plastic inserts for windshield, handrails, helm, helmsman seat, tower (tubular frame on top of the cockpit, were the bimini - canvas top, spreader lights and speakers are placed). 

The Tandem Axle Boat Trailer was made enterely in plastic, it’s very detailed and includes a plastic insert for the jockey wheel (placed in front and used when the trailer is not attached to the tow vehicle). 

Talking about the paint job, a two tones color scheme: pastel blue and white, was selected and I think it looks fantastic, particularly appropriate for a 65 pickup truck, were the pastel blue is protagonist, but looking incredibly good in the boat that is more recent and where the white is protagonist instead. 

It’s complemented by extensive tampos and/or decals, very well applied, for front, signal, tail lights, front grille, door handles, wiper washers, emblems on the side panels, windows moldings, the simple but really nice decoration for the boat, at the top of the hull, even the deck received painted touches in dark blue with metallic finishing, the tower received chrome finishing and the structure of the trailer was completely painted in pastel blue too. 

I mean, Johnny Lightning has never been paltry when it comes to finishings for its products: we are not talking about Hot Wheels or Matchbox (and in lesser degreee other brands in this sector), with their abusive cost cutting policies, NO, JL knows really well the market they are targeting at and, as far as I know, the latter brand wouldn’t resort to cheaper finishings like digital inkjet printing and the like tactics. 

That’s the difference between using a huge, well oiled, but deceiving advertising apparatus, in order to try to convince adult collectors that you’re focused on them and actually demonstrate that you’re focused on adult collectors with quality products, like Johnny Lightning does... 

The interiors for the pickup were worked in black, simple but detailed; there are multipart wheels both for the pickup and the trailer, featuring Classic Steelies rims design in white, a perfect match for an old truck with stock look, styled synthetic rubber tires and Cragar SS 5 Spokes rims design in chrome, with slick plastic tires for the trailer, respectively; finally, they were made in China...

Camionetas pickup lujosas, ya sabes esos vehículos grandes, fornidos y costosos, repletos con toda clase de amenidades y artilugios, los cuales encontrabas habitualmente en sedanes de alta gama, llegaron a ser una vista común en muchos países a nivel mundial, especialmente en aquellos con una "economía opulenta"... 

Por décadas, las camionetas pickup fueron vehículos humildes creados para el trabajo duro, con un diseño industrial, desprovisto de cualquier clase de características superfluas o sofisticación, y eso estaba bastante bien, simplemente porque eso es lo que la gente necesita, forma y función fueron integradas perfectamente para cumplir un propósito, así que las pickups no necesitaban ser algo más. 

Y si piensas acerca de esto, la misma premisa aplica en la actualidad: nacieron como vehículos utilitarios y su esencia no ha cambiado, pero ya que la industria automotriz "necesitaba" vender productos cada vez más caros, fue "conveniente" introducir vehículos con algunas características de lujo, hace casi 70 años. 

Más allá de la "practicidad" o "versatilidad" que estas camionetas pickup de lujo recientes pudieran ofrecer, porque de alguna manera pueden ser simultáneamente un vehículo de trabajo, familiar y de ocio, bueno, son vehículos utilitarios grandes, realmente grandes y bastante costosos. 

Tenemos un adagio popular aquí en mi patria, tal vez en otros países existe un equivalente, y reclama más o menos: "aunque la mona se vista de seda, mona se queda" y no solo aplica para asuntos automotrices, si sabes a lo que me refiero... 

Por otro lado, el lujo y la elegancia o buen gusto no siempre van de la mano, como las personas asumen la mayoría de veces, así que, a pesar de la cantidad de características extra de lujo y las etiquetas de precios extravagantes de las que alardean, estos vehículos recientes no son lo que podrías llamar propiamente elegantes en términos de diseño automotor. 

Si quieres encontrar algo de elegancia en el estilo de una camioneta pickup o cualquier otro vehículo, tan extraño como podría sonar, deberías mirar al pasado y no debería ser sorprendente, porque en el pasado los fabricantes en general, también los diseñadores en particular, tenían un sentido más claro de la atemporalidad en los productos que desarrollaban, su objetivo era construir cosas para durar. 

Hoy en día y con la imposición de la estrategia de la obsolescencia planeada / programada, aplicada en prácticamente todos los campos, desde la industria a la ética, productos y servicios cada vez más desechables, defectuosos, son ofrecidos con regularidad, a precios más altos encima de eso luego, en serio: es ingenuo, ridículo, pensar que las cosas serán mejores con el paso del tiempo en el sistema en el que estamos inmersos... 

Mi invitada para esta publicación, basada en la Pickup Datsun 620 1500 DX Cabina Sencilla Platón Regular (100.2") Custom (Especificaciones Americanas) de 1972 - 1979, una Coupé Utilidad / Pickup Subcompacta para Trabajo Extra Liviano 2 Puertas, es un ejemplo muy inusual, pero apropiado de un diseño más bien simple pero elegante aplicado a un vehículo utilitario, el cual difícilmente recibe el aprecio que merece, pero que yo, como diseñador profesional, aprecio por lo que realmente es... 

Esta vez no profundizaré más en este modelo particular de Datsun / Nissan, pero me enfocaré muy brevemente en el trasfondo de una de las Series presentadas en esta reseña y en el auto de juguete, que tomó como base esta pequeña camioneta pickup o coupé utilidad "oscura", como es designada en el mercado norteamericano, una que nunca llegó a mi patria, aunque hemos tenido representación de Datsun / Nissan... 

Este producto fue diseñado por Jun Imai y es probablemente uno de sus mejores desarrollos, en mi opinión como diseñador profesional; fue lanzado originalmente en 2014, para La Línea Principal (categoría Regular), han habido al menos 21 iteraciones, incluyendo variaciones de esta pickup de juguete, para Series en las categorías Regular y Adulta. 

Conseguí dos de mis ejemplos a través del mercado primario, en un par de tiendas minoristas de cadena locales y la otra a través del mercado secundario, con la ayuda de un amigo mío, colega coleccionista e importador / vendedor privado, entre 2015 y 2018, por la época de sus respectivos lanzamientos. 

Ahora, dije que este es probablemente uno de los mejores desarrollos de Imai, simplemente porque este es un modelo muy bien detallado considerando que es un coche de juguete, lo cual es lo destacado aquí y tiene la dosis correcta de personalización, que en el caso de Hot Wheels, es algo difícil de encontrar en sus productos, es una pickup de juguete muy agradable en efecto y no digo esta clase de cosas sobre esta marca muy a menudo. 

Para los lanzamientos de la Línea Principal (categoría Regular), como podrías esperar, tiene carrocería en diecast y chasis plástico (negro y con acabado cromado respectivamente, para los dos ejemplos presentados en esta publicación), mientras en el caso del lanzamiento para la Serie Hot Wheels Car Culture / Trucks de 2016, parte de la categoría Adulta, ofrece carrocería y chasis en diecast, pero la aleación luce de un calidad más baja (¡sorpresa!). 

La Serie Car Culture y sus sub-Series ha sido reetiquetada hace algunos años como "premium", en un intento más bien burdo y predecible de Mattel para distorsionar lo que significa Premium cuando se trata de coleccionables. 

Por la época en que esta Serie fue lanzada, el proceso de segmentación del cual he estado hablando en reseñas que puedes leer aquí, aquí, aquí, aquí y aquí, estaba muy avanzado; pero he visto, como coleccionista adulto, una declinación notable y sistemática en la calidad de sus productos, acompañada, sin ser sorprendente debo decir (¿recuerdas la estrategia de la obsolescencia planeada / programada, EH?), por un incremento en los precios... 

Todas estas falsas Series "premium" que Hot Wheels ha estado introduciendo desde 2019, sufren los problemas ya mencionados, a saber: mientras la calidad se está haciendo más pobre, el precio se está haciendo más alto, sin excepción y de alguna forma el proceso de segmentación ha sido un factor que contribuye a este fenómeno, algo que espero explicar en publicaciones futuras. 

En esta reseña estoy presentando evidencia de lo que estoy diciendo: puedes ver claramente cómo los primeros lanzamientos de esta pickup de juguete, de la cual mi primera invitada es un ejemplo, son un producto mejor en conjunto que los lanzamientos más recientes y ¿por qué son mejores podrías preguntar?... 

Bueno, los detalles en el modelo son mejores en los primeros lanzamientos por causa de los moldes: lo que quiero decir es, que los moldes tienen un ciclo de vida útil, es decir, un lapso en el cual pueden ser usados para producir artículos con una calidad buena y consistente, luego de ese lapso, el estrés en los materiales con los cuales los moldes son fabricados aparecerá y el producto final sufrirá deficiencias inevitablemente. 

Cuando el producto muestra estas deficiencias en su calidad, en este caso en la calidad de detalles en el carro de juguete, los moldes tienen que ser reemplazados por unos nuevos, con el fin de ofrecer un producto con una buena calidad de forma consistente: eso es lo que una marca enfocada en atender el segmento Premium de coleccionables y a los coleccionistas adultos también, haría sin vacilación. 

Pero a Mattel y a sus marcas de autos de juguete: Hot Wheels y Matchbox, les importa un bledo la calidad o el segmento Premium o los coleccionistas adultos (¡sorpresa, de nuevo!), algo que he venido planteando de forma consistente al menos desde hace 4 años. 

Sin embargo, sus campañas de mercadeo, promotores / abogados de marca y aparatos de propaganda todavía reclaman lo contrario, a pesar del hecho que, por ejemplo, están usando sus moldes más allá de su ciclo de vida útil y se nota en sus productos. 

Precisamente, en las pickup de juguete pertenecientes a la Serie Hot Wheels Car Culture / Trucks de 2016 y a la Serie HW Hot Trucks / (Hidden) Treasure Hunts de 2018, puedes ver estas deficiencias en los moldes, con rebaba e imperfecciones en los marcos de las ventanas y torceduras en los rieles del platón / caja de la pickup, también en las extensiones de los guardafangos, además, el texto Datsun en la portezuela de cola es más nítido en mi primera invitada que en las otras, es evidente y la pintura gruesa no ayuda en ese sentido... 

Por otro lado, los trabajos de pintura fueron hechos en verde con acabado Metalflake, azul agua y verde claro, todos con acabado brillante, complementados por decoraciones con tampos y/o calcomanías, en amarillo, naranja y negro; blanco, dorado, negro y azul medio metalizado; también en blanquecino y negro respectivamente. 

Añadí detalles extra pintados al frente y atrás, pero las luces de cola fueron un detalle custom en dos de ellas, ya que son parte del bómper trasero en el vehículo real, no parte del platón / caja; el diseño de la decoración en los dos ejemplos de la Línea Principal (categoría Regular) es muy agradable, pero en el ejemplo de la Serie en la categoría Adulta, no tanto. 

Las ventanas son transparentes, ahumadas y transparentes respectivamente, mientras los interiores, con un buen nivel de detalle, fueron trabajados en negro para las dos primeras muestras y plateado oscuro para la última. 

La selección de ruedas es como sigue: plásticas presentando diseño de rimes 5 Spokes, en cromado; multiparte Real Riders presentando diseño de rimes Moon Disc, en plateado metalizado, con llantas en caucho sintético labradas y plásticas presentando diseño de rimes Deep Dish Steelies 8 Spokes, en negro con labio en gris oscuro respectivamente y como nota final, todos los tres modelos fueron hechos en Malasia...

Luxurious pickup trucks, you know those big, chunky and expensive vehicles, cram-full with all kinds of amenities and gadgets, which you usually found only in high-end sedans, became a common sight in many countries worldwide, specially in those with an "opulent economy"... 

For decades, pickup trucks were humble vehicles created for hard work, with an industrial design, devoid of any kind of superfluous characteristics or sophistication, and that was pretty fine, just because that’s what people need, form and function were perfectly integrated to fulfill a purpose, so pickups didn’t need to be something else. 

And if you think about it, the same premise applies currently: they were born as utilitarian vehicles and their essence have not changed, but since the automotive industry "needed" to sell products increasingly more expensive, it was "convenient" to introduce vehicles with some luxury features, almost 70 years ago. 

Beyond the "practicality" or "versatility" these recent luxury pickup trucks could offer, because somehow they can be simultaneously a work, family and leisure vehicle, well, they are big utilitarian vehicles, really big and quite expensive too. 

We have a common saying here in my homeland, maybe in other countries there is an equivalent, it claims pretty much: "even if a monkey dresses like a prince, it remains a monkey" and it not only applies to automotive matters, if you know what I mean... 

On the other hand, luxury and elegance or good taste not always go hand in hand, as people assume most times, so despite the amount of luxury extra features and the flamboyant price tags they flaunt, these recent vehicles are not what you could call properly sleek in terms of automotive design. 

If you want to find some elegance in the style of a pickup truck or any other vehicle, as strange as it could sound, you should look to the past and it shouldn’t be surprising, because in the past manufacturers in general, also designers in particular, had a clearer sense of timelessness in the products they developed, their goal was to build things to last. 

Nowadays and with the imposition of the planned / programmed obsolescence strategy, applied in virtually all fields, from industry to ethics, products and services increasingly more disposable, defective, are offered in a regular basis, at higher prices on top of that so, really: it’s naive, ridiculous, to think that things will get better over time in the system we’re immersed... 

My guest for this publication, based on the 1972 - 1979 Datsun 620 Pickup 1500 DX Single Cab Regular Bed (100.2") Custom (American Specs), a Subcompact Extra Light Duty 2-Doors Coupe Utility / Pickup, is a very unusual, but appropriate example of a rather simple but elegant design applied in an utilitarian vehicle, which hardly receives the appreciation it deserves, but that I, a professional designer, appreciate for what it really is... 

This time I will not deepen more on this particular Datsun / Nissan model, but I will do focus very briefly in the background of one of the Series featured in this review and on the toy car, that took as basis this "obscure" small pickup truck or coupe utility, as it would be designated in the North American market, one that never arrived to my homeland, albeit we have had Datsun / Nissan representation... 

This product was designed by Jun Imai and it’s probably one of his best developments, in my opinion as professional designer; it was originally released in 2014, for the Mainline (Regular category), there have been at least 21 iterations, including variations of this toy pickup, for Series in the Regular and Adult categories. 

I got two of my examples through the primary market, in a pair of local chain retail stores and the other through the secondary market, with the help of a friend of mine, fellow collector and importer / private seller, between 2015 and 2018, by the time of their respective releases. 

Now, I said that this is probably one of the best developments of Imai, just because this model is very well detailed considering it’s a toy car, which is the highlight here and it has the right dose of customization, that in the case of Hot Wheels, is something difficult to find in its products, it’s a very nice toy pickup indeed and I don’t say this kind of things about this brand so often. 

For the releases in the Mainline (Regular category), as you could expect, it has diecast body and plastic chassis (black and with chrome finishing respectively, for the two examples featured in this publication), while in the case of the release of the 2016 Hot Wheels Car Culture / Trucks Series, part of the Adult category, it offers diecast body and chassis, but the alloy looks of a lower quality than usual (surprise!). 

The Car Culture Series and its sub-Series has been relabeled some years ago as "premium", in a rather coarse and predictable attempt by Mattel to distort what Premium means when it comes to collectibles. 

By the time this Series was released, the segmentation process I have been talking about in reviews you can read here, here, here, here and here, was very advanced; but I have seen, as adult collector, a noticeable and systematic declination in the quality of its products, accompanied, not surprisingly I must say (do you remember the planned / programmed obsolescence strategy, HUH?), by an increase in prices... 

All these fake "premium" Series Hot Wheels has been introducing since 2019, suffer the problems already mentioned, namely: while the quality is getting poorer, the price is getting higher, without exception and somehow the segmentation process has been a factor that contributes to this phenomenon, something I hope to explain in future publications. 

In this review I’m featuring evidence of what I’m talking about: you can see clearly how the first releases of this toy pickup, of which my first guest is an example, are a better product as a whole than the more recent releases and why they are better you might ask?... 

Well, the details in the model are better in the first releases, because of the molds: what I mean is, the molds have an useful life cycle, i.e., a span in which they can be used to produce items with a good and consistent quality, after that span, stress in the materials of which the molds are manufactured will appear and the final product will suffer deficiencies inevitably. 

When the product shows these deficiencies in its quality, in this case in the quality of details in the toy car, the molds have to be replaced by new ones, in order to offer a product with good quality in a consistent way: that’s what a brand focused into cater the Premium segment of collectibles and adult collectors too, would do without hesitation. 

But Mattel and its toy car brands: Hot Wheels and Matchbox, don’t give a damn about quality or the Premium segment or adult collectors (surprise, again!), something I have been posing in a consistent way at least since 4 years ago. 

However, their marketing campaigns, brand promoters / advocates and propaganda apparatus still claim the opposite, despite the fact, for instance, that they are using their molds beyond their useful life cycle and it shows in their products. 

Precisely, in the toy pickup belonging to the 2016 Hot Wheels Car Culture / Trucks Series and the 2018 HW Hot Trucks / (Hidden) Treasure Hunts Series, you can see these deficiencies in the molds, with burr and imperfections in the frame of the windows and kinks in the rails of the pickup bed / box, also in the fender flares, besides, the Datsun wording on the tailgate is sharperner in my first guest than in the others, it’s evident and the thick paint doesn’t help in that sense... 

On the other hand, the paint jobs were made in green with Metalflake finishing, aqua blue and light green, all with glossy finishing, complemented by decorations with tampos and/or decals, in yellow, orange and black; white, golden, black and medium blue metallic; also in off-white and black respectively. 

I added extra painted touches in the front and rear, but the tail lights were a custom touch in two of them, since they are part of the rear bumper in the actual vehicle, not part of the bed / box; the design of decoration in the two examples from the Mainline (Regular category) is very nice, but in the example from the Series in the Adult category, not so much. 

The windows are clear, smoked and clear respectively, while the interiors, with a good level of detail, were worked in black for the two first samples and dark silver for the last one. 

The wheels selection is as follows: plastic featuring 5 Spokes rims design, in chrome; multipart Real Riders featuring Moon Disc rims design, in metallic silver, with styled synthetic rubber tires and plastic featuring Deep Dish Steelies 8 Spokes rims design, in black with dark gray lip respectively and as final note, all the three models were made in Malaysia...
