English version
There is no doubt that the S Series by Navistar International (currently known as International Motors LLC), was and has been a milestone that set the business standard for this brand, which is now a subsidiary of Traton Group, in turn the trucks division of Volkswagen Group...

This is true even since this, formerly independent company, were known as International Harvester (IH) and that’s to be expected, due to the fact that the S Series started production since 1978, when IH consolidated its previous trucks Lines: IHC LoadStar (medium duty vehicles) and IHC FleetStar (heavy duty vehicles), in a single Series...

While trucks in virtually all their forms have been at the core of business for International, probably the S Series, more precisely its second generation, marked the way forward and it was probably the most successful product, comprising medium and heavy duty trucks, that this brand has had.

Even its exterior design became a point of reference for other truck manufacturers: I find certain similarities in this aspect with vehicles from the same segment and era.

I would mention, in that sense, examples made by: Ford (F700 - F800), Sterling (L7000 - L8000), Freightliner (FL60 - FL70 - FL80), Kenworth (T300 - T400), Volvo (WG), Chevrolet (Kodiak C6500 - C7500 - C8500) or GMC (Topkick C6500 - C7500 - C8500).

I’m featuring this time one of the many configurations you could find of this versatile catalog of trucks and I must clarify that, in the S Series, there was a Line known as 4000, comprised by medium and heavy duty trucks, also the 7100 / 8100 Line of tractor trucks and the 2500 / 2600 Line of severe duty trucks.

To the first Line mentioned belongs my guest for this publication: the 1999 International Navistar 4900 S Series 4x2 Crew Cab - Fire Engine / Pumper Truck, a Heavy Duty, Class 7 Truck / Class A Type 2 (Structural Firefighting in the City) Fire Engine / Fire Appliance / Fire Apparatus.

I must clarify as well, that there is a certain overlap regarding tractor trucks, between the 4000 and 7100 / 8100 Lines, due to a complex stratification of products; the commercial trucks sector is a very diversified market, since you can find a vehicle for almost any kind of work you have in mind.

Now, one of the most widely known application for the S Series, 4000 Line of trucks, was precisely fire appliances and you can still find a lot of them in working condition.

However, since the second generation of this Series and Line was offered between 1989 and 2002, most of them have been replaced by newer models in their respective Fire Departments.

These trucks are acquired by companies specialized in fire appliances, in a commercial chassis / cabin configuration and then receive a customized-to-specific-needs utility body, that in the case of Class A Type 2 vehicles can be either a pumper, a tanker, a responder truck, a wildland / brush truck or a rescue truck / ambulance, rarely other kind of fire apparatus.

Now, bearing in mind that this is not a scale replica, it was impossible for me to find the exact match for my guest, but researching about a possible inspiration, well, I find similarities with utility bodies made by companies in this segment like: Superior, E-One, KME, Pierce or BOE (Boise Mobile Equipment), so maybe it was loosely based on products by one of these renowned brands...

Just in case, you can check other examples of International trucks in my collection, either as toys or as scale replicas here, here and here; I think it’s always revealing to see what the market of collectibles has to offer and compare, but it’s also encouraging, because it lets you know that there are different options, so you don’t have to depend on one or two brands, that while popular, can be quite disappointing lately...

Is there any doubt about my love for fire appliances?, if that’s the case, you could check this blog of mine and you will find a good amount of reviews about them, for instance, looking by the tag Emergency Vehicles or Fire Apparatus, not to mention the ones on the way to be published, because despite my kinda long absence, I’m not planning to leave this blog adrift...

And when it comes to this kind of vehicles, Matchbox has had a good assortment of models that, despite being toy trucks, have a particular charm for me, exception made with the more recent examples, that in most cases have a ridiculously high dose of cheap plastic, hence, represent an insult to the legacy that this brand built around its toy versions of fire appliances...

My guest was called simply International Pumper and its first release was in 1999, as part of the Mainline of Matchbox, it has had at least 52 iterations, including variations, mostly for the Regular category, albeit there were 2 iterations made for Lines in the Adult category; apparently, it was discontinued in 2015.

In general terms, this is a very nice toy truck, with a very good level of detail, specially considering the approximate scale used for it (1:96, yet the chassis claims a 1:100 scale, but you should take it with a pinch of salt always, in the case of toy vehicles).

You can notice the designer involved gave some love to this little marvel and I really appreciate it as experienced adult collector; but not everything is rosy and I will explain later why: the fact that it’s a toy truck doesn’t mean I have low expectations, even more when we are talking about Matchbox and wherever there is meanness, you will see the result...

I got my two samples of this model, throught the secondary market, one of them through a private seller, pretty much 6 years ago, while the other with the help of a friend of mine, fellow collector and importer / private seller, around 9 years ago.

My first sample of this model belongs to the 2013 Matchbox EMT Series, 5-Pack and I already featured another model of this 5-Pack, of which you can read here; by the way, this kind of sets are also part of the Mainline / Regular category.

My second sample, on the other hand, belongs to the 2015 Matchbox On A Mission Supreme Hero Series, which is part of the Adult category and just like in the previous case, I have featured other models of the Series here and here

Both samples offer diecast body and plastic chassis in silver; as I already mentioned, the overall level of detail is very good, but there is an aspect, among others, I really don’t like: between 1999 and 2009, this toy truck featured a separate plastic insert for the V-shaped light bar at the top of the cabin, which allowed different colors for the windows and the light bar.

Nonetheless, in 2012, the model was reintroduced with a noticeable change: the V-shaped light bar was molded with the windows, in the typical costs-cutting maneuver by Mattel, which obviously detracts from the appearance of this kind of product .

Talking about my second sample, well, it’s a Series from the Adult category, with a price tag five times higher, so you expect some extras and in that sense, a silver chassis instead of a chassis with chrome finishing, is simply not in tune with the price tag, but there are more unfavorable aspects.

Regarding the paint jobs, they were made, in the first case, in red, with glossy finishing, complemented by a decoration with tampos, only on the side panels, in white, black, red and yellow, fictitious (not based on an actual vehicle) and simple, but appropriate; I had to add some painted details for the headlights (that for this photoshoot was not included) and front strobo lights, in silver and copper, as well as for the V-shaped light bar, in silver and copper.

In the second case, the paint job was made in yellow, with a decoration based on an actual Fire Department: the Boone County Fire Protection District, located in the State of Missouri; however, the serious issue with this decoration is that it was made with digital inkjet printing, something unacceptable in an item from the Adult category.

It really doesn’t matter how much the stupid brand promoters out there try to hide this fact, those phonies with very popular blogs and vlogs, which are just sales showcases, with little to no substance...

That’s the kind of stuff that makes serious adult collectors tired and then they abandon these petty-minded brands, which are only thinking in profit and don’t give a damn about their products: sooner or later these brands will become irrelevant and will go bankrupt, no matter how big they are, because of their complete lack of vision and their covetousness...

If you want a good version belonging to a Line in the Adult category, much better and realistic that the one featured here, from the Supreme Heroes Collection Series, you must go back to 1999, when a Line, part of the Matchbox Collectibles - Premiere Fire Series, was released.

This special edition came in a longer and ticker card, printed in full color and along with the model, it was included a nice cardboard box, also printed; the toy truck represented, with some licenses, of course, an actual fire engine of the Fort Wayne Fire Department, featuring a very prolix decoration, with tampos and/or decals: as a whole it makes look the Supreme Heroes version, like a shabby imitation (that costs more than it should)...

Just like in the previous sample, I had to add some painted details for the headlights and front strobo lights, in silver and metallic red, as well as for the V-shaped light bar, in silver, metallic blue and metallic red.

The interiors were worked in white for the first sample and light gray for the second one, with a decent level of detail, the mold includes the lay-flat fire hoses at the top of the utility body, a nice touch, that adds color contrast; the windows are red tinted and clear respectively.

Regarding the wheels, my first sample offers plastic wheels featuring Open Dot Dash rims design, with golden chrome finishing, that somehow combines very well with the red color scheme, while my second sample offers Ultra Max multipart wheels, featuring 5 Spokes Utility rims design in silver, with chrome lip and hub cap, styled synthetic rubber tires and finally, both were made in Thailand...

Ezk 39:23-25 "And the heathen shall know that the house of Israel went into captivity for their iniquity: because they trespassed against me, therefore hid I my face from them, and gave them into the hand of their enemies: so fell they all by the sword. According to their uncleanness and according to their transgressions have I done unto them, and hid my face from them. Therefore thus saith the LORD GOD; now will I bring again the captivity of Jacob, and have mercy upon the whole house of Israel, and will be jealous for my holy name..."

2013 Navistar International DuraStar 4400 / MV Series Standard Cab 4x2 SRA (Single Rear Axle) Flatbed Rollback Tow Truck - Medium Duty Class 6 Commercial / Utility Truck 2014 International DuraStar Series Release 1 Diecast Scale 1:65 by GreenLight

In some regions maybe the name International will not be associated easily with something specific, but there are good chances that it will make ring some bells around the world, because a company with more than a century in business can do that...

Navistar International Corporation is a company widely known by its trucks and engines, I have to say that its products cover a good portion of this segment, with offers that go from commercial grade Class 4 Light Duty to Class 8 Heavy Duty trucks, 11 lines / series in total...

In my homeland, Colombia (South America), this brand has had presence since at least 1958, when a local company: Comercial Internacional de Equipos y Maquinaria, started operations and in fact, at that time, Navistar was known as International Harvester Company (the transition to Navistar was made in 1985 - 1986).

Precisely, by late 1986, Comercial Internacional de Equipos y Maquinaria was bought by its current shareholders, despite its financial difficulties, due to its commercial potencial and only until 2000, when all the subsidiaries were merged, the company changed its name to the current one: Navitrans S.A.

This company, as well as the brands and products it represents, including Case and Agrale, has built a very good reputation in the commercial trucks market, where medium and heavy duty drivers / operators feel appreciation for these products, due to their reliability, strength, performance and efficient fuel consumption.

With this brief background, you could imagine that my guest for this publication is, by no means, a stranger for me: the 2013 International DuraStar 4400 / MV Series Standard Cab 4x2 SRA (Single Rear Axle) Flatbed Rollback Tow Truck, a Medium Duty Class 6 Commercial / Utility Truck.

This vehicle belongs to the first generation of the recent 4000 / MV Series by Navistar, which was the replacement of the previous S Series, produced between 1977 and 2001; the DuraStar / MV Series is currently in force and it’s available in numerous configurations, some of them from factory and others made by third party companies.

Both S Series and 4000 Series has been sold here in my country, but the latter is by far a more common sight; I think that the overall exterior design has played an important role in that sense, since it’s appealing, streamlined, neat and it doesn’t look old-fashioned, despite it was introduced in 2001, with minor modifications until 2018.

It speaks very well about the work of the design department in Navistar International, it was a huge leap compared with the previous S Series and these trucks stand out against the strong competition in the local market, from several brands in this segment, like: Chevrolet / Isuzu, Mitsubishi, Ford, Freightliner, Nissan and several Chinese carmakers...

My first contact with products by GreenLight was pretty much 10 years ago, when I saw them in a specialized toy store of my hometown (which went out of business 2 years ago or so) and I though they offered more than enough quality to become part of my collection, at a time when I was not interested in diecast models based on vehicles...

Such an interest in collectibles based on diecast vehicles arose 2 years later so, the fact that GreenLight managed to draw my attention as adult collector is not a little feat...

Yet, it would be difficult for a casual visitor of this blog, to say that I know something about GreenLight, because you don’t see reviews based on products by this brand so often here, but that could be a wrong assumption...

You don’t need to get every single release of a certain brand of collectibles, in order to have a clear idea about what you could expect from it and while my first impressions about GreenLight were very favorable, those impressions changed over time.

I have seen the evolution of GreenLight since 2010, it has had its ups and downs, more "downs" than "ups" I must say and the deal breaker has been consistently the quality control, more than anything else, particularly since 2016.

My guest for this publication is one of the "ups" that this brand has been able to produce and it’s kind of curious, because it was the first time that GreenLight dabbled with trucks, in this case medium duty trucks.

I got it in the secondary market (this brand was never available in the local primary market), with the help of a friend of mine, fellow collector and importer, pretty much 6 years ago.

There was an important increase in price for this line (2014 International DuraStar Series Release 1), close to 50% additional, in part explained by the bigger size of the clamsell (a more durable presentation than the usual card that other brands offer), but also and more importantly, the size of the model, that has an excellent level of detail, proportions and overall quality.

The dose of diecast in this model is very decent, mainly in the cabin and the flatbed; the paint job was made in black, with glossy finishing, albeit the flatbed has satin finishing in a very nice contrast, there are few but strategically placed tampos and/or decals for the front grille and bumper, signal and tail lights.

There are several plastic inserts for the headlights, side rearview mirrors, side tool boxes, the auxiliar tow bar, the side steps (which are part of the chassis), the structure that supports the lightbar and the lightbar itself, the work is very prolix even bearing in mind that this is an affordable model, I mean, compared with the offer by other brands in this segment.

The windows are clear obviously and the interiors are also black, well detailed, there are no opening features and the flatbed is fixed, but you don’t mind at this price point; the multipart wheels feature a very realistic 10 Slots rims design in chrome, with styled rubber tires and it was made in China...

Ezk 23:40-49 "And furthermore, that ye have sent for men to come from far, unto whom a messenger was sent; and, lo, they came: for whom thou didst wash thyself, paintedst thy eyes, and deckedst thyself with ornaments, and satest upon a stately bed, and a table prepared before it, whereupon thou hast set mine incense and mine oil. And a voice of a multitude being at ease was with her: and with the men of the common sort were brought Sabeans from the wilderness, which put bracelets upon their hands, and beautiful crowns upon their heads. Then said I unto her that was old in adulteries: will they now commit whoredoms with her, and she with them? Yet they went in unto her, as they go in unto a woman that playeth the harlot: so went they in unto Aholah and unto Aholibah, the lewd women. And the righteous men, they shall judge them after the manner of adulteresses, and after the manner of women that shed blood; because they are adulteresses, and blood is in their hands. For thus saith the LORD GOD; I will bring up a company upon them, and will give them to be removed and spoiled. And the company shall stone them with stones, and dispatch them with their swords; they shall slay their sons and their daughters, and burn up their houses with fire. Thus will I cause lewdness to cease out of the land, that all women may be taught not to do after your lewdness. And they shall recompense your lewdness upon you, and ye shall bear the sins of your idols: and ye shall know that I am the LORD GOD."

2005 Navistar International CXT (Commercial Extreme Truck) Crew Cab All Wheel Drive - Large Pickup Truck (International CXT) 2014 Matchbox On A Mission MBX Construction Series MB687 17/120 Diecast Scale 1:91 by Matchbox

ENGLISH
Navistar International Corporation, formerly registered as International Harvester Company, an American conglomerate mainly known by its medium and heavy duty trucks, was once a very diversified manufacturer of farming and construction equipment, buses, gas turbines, related components and spare parts, light duty pickup trucks and SUVs (Sport-Utility Vehicles)...

However, all this diversification became a matter of the past after a series of difficult circumstances in the late 70s and early 80s, and one of the consequences was that the Scout (SUVs) and International (pickup and light duty trucks) division, ended in the hands of Scout / Light Line Distributors, Inc. in 1991...

The production of this kind of vehicles (SUVs and pickup - light trucks), nonetheless, ceased virtually since 1979-80, leaving Navistar International out of this business for a long, long time, at least as for the manufacturing of complete vehicles until 2004.

It took pretty much 25 years to see the return of this brand to the segment of pickup trucks (or SUTs - Sport Utility Trucks), but it wasn’t as you could expect or even speculate, with an update of its former Series of International Harvester 1000D / 1010 / 100 light duty trucks.

NO, it was something much more overwhelming, over the top if you will, but if you think about it a little more carefully, it’s also something more consistent with the current offer of this company; I’m talking about the guest for this publication: the 2005 Navistar International CXT (Commercial Extreme Truck) Crew Cab All Wheel Drive - Large Pickup Truck

This behemoth is the first release of the XT Series (1 of 3) by Navistar International, a product that unfortunately had a very short presence in the market, which also created a segment of its own and gave rise to some counterparts from other manufacturers, that saw its huge impact on the general public.

The CXT was built on the International 7300 - Severe Duty Truck Series platform so, it’s a Class 7-9 vehicle (in the United States), that in some places will need a commercial driver’s license or its equivalent, an over 6.5 tons hulk that can take you virtually anywhere, on or off road, albeit it wouldn’t fit an average parking garage (but, who cares?).

It’s curious that this unprecedented vehicle, was marketed by Navistar International as a dual-purpose truck for business owners, who want to have some fun towing and hauling stuff, but who also want a promotional tool for their companies (and this CXT does attract eyes, you can bet on it!).

I think that maybe the developers of this vehicle hardly could have imagined that it would become a big and expensive toy for adults already well grown up or a sort of recreational vehicle for celebrities with inordinate appetites and obese wallets.

Although, what else you can expect from an outlandish pickup truck with the size of a mastodon, the luxury of a high-end SUV, a 466 cu in, 7.6 L, Inline 6 DT466 International turbodiesel engine, rated at 220 hp (with the option of a 530 cu in, 8.7 L, Inline 6 DT530 International turbodiesel engine, rated at 300 hp), an ultra macho look, a price between US$ 90,000 and US$ 130,000 depending on the extras and a limited production below 300 units, HUH?!...

There are several ways to bury a successful brand, some of them achieve their purpose in the medium and long term, while others in the short term, but bad practices in any industry are always efficient in that sense, even more than good practices, because the latter require effort, investment and commitment, while the first just need carelessness or dereliction...

It’s Matchbox a successful brand?...

I know that many will say: "of course, are you kidding?", but if you compare the current performance of this brand with what happened in the late 60s and early 70s, its one and only Golden Age, you have to question it; yet, I’m sure that Matchbox retains much of its greatness.

However, something is killing this brand and it’s DISTRIBUTION; this issue is anything but new, I have been talking about it as many other collectors do and I would dare to say that this subject has been getting worse virtually since Mattel took the reins of Matchbox in 1997.

Ironically, Mattel and its native diecast brand: Hot Wheels, has probably one of the best distribution networks in this segment, if not the best and it makes this distribution issue with Matchbox even more suspicious.

I have heard, on the other hand, that many collectors around the world, specially in Europe, Australia and South America, are having a hard time getting the latest Adult lines by Hot Wheels, for instance, from the Car Culture line or even models from the Regular lines, but that’s a topic for future reviews...

Now, while distribution is a very serious issue for Matchbox, so much that it could bury this brand and I’m not exaggerating at all about it, it’s just one side of this phenomenon, because you need good figures of production if you want to have something to distribute and that’s precisely what you don’t feel with MBX.

It’s a matter of fact that, in toys aisles, the proportion between Hot Wheels and Matchbox diecast, in individual card, is 10:1 respectively in the best stocked retail or department stores, 20:1 or 30:1 in the vast majority of stores and the rest just don’t have a single one model of Matchbox...

Can you see any inconsistency or arbitrariness (carelessness or dereliction) in the policies of Mattel regarding Matchbox?...

Because I do, but more on this topic later, it’s time to focus on the model introduced in this review, a sample of what makes Matchbox still great, very in spite of its terrible distribution...

The International CXT was released in 2006, as part of the Adult line Superfast, a very deserved debut for a very nice rendition of this pickup mammoth, with more than 15 iterations so far.

I got mine with the help of a friend, fellow collector and importer, around 3 years ago; curiously, the card has a sticker on the back, which claims that it was imported from Ecuador and well, I didn’t see any of them locally by the time it was released.

The model has diecast body and silver plastic chassis, the dose of plastic in this model is pretty much 40% (excluding wheels), which is kind of disappointing, but at least you can see a witty use of it; the level of detail and realism is very good considering the scale.

A big plus for this model is the paint job in cyan blue and the decoration inspired on a fictitious construction company "INC", that pops up every now and then in the regular lines of this brand, with tampos and/or decals on the side panels, in white, black, yellow and red, it’s indeed quite attractive.

The windows are clear while the interiors were worked in yellow and the ingenuity I mentioned, is that the mold of the interiors include the side running boards and steps, and also the front fenders, that complement nicely the overall color scheme, the plastic wheels feature Ringed Gear rims design with yellow finishing and it was made in Thailand...

Pro 12:1-5 "Whoso loveth instruction loveth knowledge: but he that hateth reproof is brutish. A good man obtaineth favor of the LORD: but a man of wicked devices will HE condemn. A man shall not be established by wickedness: but the root of the righteous shall not be moved. A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband: but she that maketh ashamed is as rottenness in his bones. The thoughts of the righteous are right: but the counsels of the wicked are deceit."
