2009 Nissan GT-R (R35) Phase I - Compact 2-Door 2+2 Fastback Coupe Sports Car / Super Car / Grand Tourer (Japanese Specs) - 2016 Hot Wheels Entertainment / Gran Turismo Series 5/5 Diecast Scale 1:66 by Hot Wheels

For English version scroll below

English version
In this review, I’m starting to address a topic that I briefly introduced here, regarding the strategy that Hot Wheels developed and implemented since the early 2000s, in order to entice adult collectors with its products; a strategy that has not been so consistent in terms of quality through time and it’s still far from what other brands are offering for the same market segment.

Of course, in this strategy the external licensing has been an essential factor to consider, when it comes to explore the potential of toy cars as collectibles, because while children are not so demanding in terms of how faithfully reproduced is a vehicle, in the form of toy car, adult collectors are a completely different story.

Indeed, Hot Wheels and Matchbox, divisions of Mattel, depend mainly on external licensing from the existing vehicle manufacturers worldwide, a trait that share with other toy cars brands like Majorette or Tomica, but there is also another field of external licensing that represents an important source of inspiration and development of products...

I’m talking about the world of brands, companies and/or products, that have achieved a high degree of recognition and remembrance among the general public, becoming "cultural icons", in the understanding of a culture heavily permeated by consumerism and propaganda, like ours...

This field, I mean, external licensing related with "icons" of the so called "popular culture", is something that Hot Wheels and Matchbox share even with manufacturers of scale replicas: it’s no wonder, since this field is extremely lucrative, hence, it tends to be overexploited by developers of toys and collectibles.

In the case of Hot Wheels, there are at least two Lines focused on "icons of the popular culture", with their respective Sub-Lines and Series, that have been part of its portfolio since 2011: Nostalgic Brands, replaced in 2013 by the Pop Culture Line and Hot Wheels Entertainment.

At least at the beginning, these Lines took two clear directions: in the first hand, Nostalgic Brands / Pop Culture would include different existing models like: box trucks, panel vans, coupe utilities, step vans, station wagons, semi trucks, sedans delivery, pickup trucks, SUVs, tanker trucks, motorhomes, coupes, convertibles, etc.

These items, either based on actual vehicles or concept / designer / fantasy / original / internally licensed models, feature decorations taken from: TV series, comics, cereal brands, candy / chocolate brands, famous illustrators, ice cream brands, music artists, videogames, movies, oil companies, aftermarket accessories developers, toys brands, etc.

But there is no direct connection between the vehicles selected and the brands represented, except that the first ones work fine as advertising boards.

On the other hand, Hot Wheels Entertainment, that was introduced originally as Retro Entertainment, changing later to Hot Wheels Entertainment and it’s currently marketed as Replica Entertainment, that basically reproduces vehicles featured in some of the most popular: movies, TV series (either real action or animations), videogames, comics, automotive events, etc.

In this case, there is a direct connection between the "popular icon" represented and the vehicle included, but obviously, since we are talking about toy cars, the level of resemblance with the actual vehicles represented is very limited, that’s why call them "replicas", is not only pretentious, it’s decidedly falacious.

It’s worth remembering something that’s crystal clear for experienced adult collectors, but not so much or it’s absolutely ignored by buyers and collectors wannabes: scale replicas are NOT toy cars and toy cars are NOT scale replicas, if you don’t know the difference, you’re not merely ignorant in basic matters of collectionism, NO, you’re just blind...

Now, from the experienced adult collector’s point view, the second Line mentioned, namely Hot Wheels Entertainment, is of a greater interest; in my particular case, because of the concepts that audiovisual products and some "icons of the popular culture" display, that in most cases go beyond the pernicious influence of consumerism and propaganda.

After all, what most people do not realize or do not understand, is that the value of these "icons of the popular culture" actually does not lie in their popularity, which arises mostly from mental conditioning, but in their nature as cultural assets, symbols of our society, for better or worse...

There are more aspects to address regarding this topic and it’s worth to look beyond the typical easy flattery of brand promoters, who hardly see a blemish in the way Hot Wheels and eventually Matchbox pretend to reach adult collectors, albeit judging by the products themselves, they are focused more in buyers and sales than in anything else, so in the future there will be more about this...

Besides, there will be time, if GOD allows, to speak about the actual vehicle that inspired my guest for this publication: the 2009 Nissan GT-R (R35) Phase I, a Compact 2-Door 2+2 Fastback Coupe Sports Car / Super Car / Grand Tourer (Japanese Specs), that by the way, is one of my all time favorites of this typology of cars.

But this time let’s focus on the toy car I’m introducing, whose designer was Kevin Cao, an exponent of the New School in the design team of Hot Wheels, that started as an intern, but currently is a senior project designer; he has been responsible for a wide variety of models, either based on actual cars or concept / designer / fantasy / original / internally licensed models and I would say that there are more of the latter in his portfolio.

I got this item through the secondary market, with the help of a friend of mine, fellow collector and importer / private seller, more than 6 years ago; it was originally released in 2009, for the New Models Series, part of the Mainline (Regular category); it has had at least 12 iterations, including variations, for Lines in the Regular and Adult categories.

My guest belongs to the 2016 Hot Wheels Entertainment / Gran Turismo Series and it’s one of the three iterations / variations created for Adult Lines; the other two were featured in the 2010 Speed Machines Series.

It offers full diecast construction (body and chassis), the level of detail is good, but it has room for improvements, the lack of the A pillars is particularly annoying; for a change, the chassis included some details too and that’s something I appreciate.

The paint job was made in black with glossy finishing, both for the body and the chassis, but I would like to see another color or finishing for the latter, for instance, dark gray or black satin, in order to add some contrast and it wouldn’t involve a drastic increase in production costs or an increase at all, but again, Hot Wheels cannot fight against the law of the least effort...

It was complemented by a simple decoration, on the hood, tail and side panels, with tampos and/or decals, in white and red; the design of this decoration could be better, to be honest.

The interiors were worked in dark silver, with a basic level of detail; the mold for the smoked windows included the A pillars and the headlights, also, there were included nice tampos and/or decals for the windshield, in black and white. The multipart Real Riders wheels feature 6 Spokes rims design, similar to the one used from factory in the actual car, with 7 Spokes, in black finishing with chrome lip, styled synthetic rubber tires, equal size in front and rear, which is very welcome for any model and it was made in Malaysia...

Act 22:27-30 "And it came to pass, that, as I made my journey, and was come nigh unto Damascus about noon, suddenly there shone from heaven a great light round about me. And I fell unto the ground, and heard a voice saying unto me, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? And I answered, Who art thou, LORD? And he said unto me, I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom thou persecutest. And they that were with me saw indeed the light, and were afraid; but they heard not the voice of him that spake to me. And I said, What shall I do, LORD? And the LORD said unto me: Arise, and go into Damascus; and there it shall be told thee of all things which are appointed for thee to do. And when I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of them that were with me, I came into Damascus."

2013 50th Anniversary Lamborghini Veneno - 2-Door Coupe / Berlinetta Super Car (Lamborghini Veneno) 2014 HW City - Speed Team Series 37/250 Diecast Scale 1:66 by Hot Wheels

ENGLISH
There must be blowing new winds in Sant’Agata, Bologna, since the brand of the raging bull is resolutely searching for new design languages and you can perceive it in the latest beasts it has released to the global bullring of the car industry...

I wouldn’t dare to say that these experimental vehicles are unmistakable signs of the new direction that Automobili Lamborghini will follow in the near future, but definitely they are evidence of the huge potential for innovation of this brand...

In this particular case, I would say that the design team at Lamborghini, went into "berserker" mode, because the model at issue differs substantially from the current offer of bulls boosted by fuel, made by my favorite italian brand...

This was one of the branchilds, of the prolific Fillipo Perini, who until very recently, was Head of Exterior Design, but now he will assume the same position in Italdesign, while Mitja Borkert will replace him in Lamborghini.

I’m talking about the radical 2013 50th Anniversary Lamborghini Veneno - 2-Door Coupe / Berlinetta Super Car, a Concept Car that worked its way to the automotive market, but with an extremely low number of units.

Regarding its overall exterior design, I read somewhere a comment about it and the guy concerned, said something like: "it was drawn by a 5 years old kid, who just watched Batman"...

Obviously, he thought that was enlightening the whole automotive design industry, with his deep insights, when actually he was performing the classic and pathetic role of the braggart...

What knows this dummy about the creativity of a 5 years old child?...

Who, with the slightest knowledge about the comic world, would say that the original Batman was a puerile creation or that even it were intended for 5 years old infants?...

When was the last time that the concept artists behind the development of the multiple renditions of the Batmobile, considered their retro-futuristic designs an insult?...

That’s the kind of ignorant people that unnerves me, with their stupid and misinformed opinions about design; individuals looking for attention, that only criticize, because they don’t have any talent to create not even the simplest piece of functional art...

Leaving aside this outburst of dignity, I will be more than pleased into praise an epic sample of design, where the aggressive and mind-boggling lines not only create a new visual language for the Lambo, but serve to the purpose of offering a staggering performance and the incredibly precise handling of a racing car, in a street legal beast.

For the untrained eye, the complex sequence of sharp volumes, like razors, that gives the Veneno an alien appearance, is minutely conceived to provide superior aerodynamics: optimum downforce, minimal drag and enhanced cooling for the brake system and the engine.

This is a new definition of beauty, developed from the efficiency and functionality, deliberately complex, away from the organic curves and simple shapes of the old paradigms in the streamlined design.

The Veneno is decidedly masculine, maybe it has to do with the "Y theme" in the head / tail lights and subtly hinted in the rest of the body design; yet, it’s a perfect tribute for the groundbreaking Countach, its ancestor in direct line virtually, once you examine it in detail, to find that both ignored the "establishment".

A poisonous iron like this, is properly boosted by a pantagruelian powerplant: a 396 cu in, 6.5 L, V12 light-alloy block, mid-mounted L539 engine with 4WD, producing 750 hp and mated to an ultra-quick 7-speed, single clutch, semi-automatic ISR transmission; only 3 units were made and I guess that the towering € 3,000,000 price, was not a problem for their disguntingly rich owners...

I have had a bittersweet experience exploring the diecast market for Hot Wheels, in the local retail stores and toy shops; most times is quite disappoint, there are several reasons for that and I will briefly outline one of them...

There is a very poor offer of recent models in many stores; the fever for collecting Hot Wheels is growing fast so, the models disappear quickly from the shelves, but that’s only part of the explanation.

I have managed to talk with asistants of the toys section in certain stores and some of them told me, that the representatives of Mattel/Hot Wheels/Matchbox hardly visit them, to verify the stocks of their items, between two and three times a year, average, I was told and the "curious thing" is that Hot Wheels releases lately 15 batches or cases, with a different assortment of models, per year (!?)...

Also, that their orders take longer than usual to arrive and hence, the stocks are very low at certain times of the year, not to mention that there are still old models hanging there (which sometimes could be great, but not all the time); that’s quite evident with a high turnover product like this one.

So, we have negligence on the part of Mattel, with the timely distribution of its products, which is "kinda" suspicious: if you have an item that is selling like hotcakes, you don’t want bottlenecks in the distribution logistics, do you?...

More on this matter in future publications, I’m pretty sure it’s important to analyze the different vertices of this situation and maybe find solutions to some problems around this hobby...

Returning to the guest for this publication, I got it in a local retail store, last year; I would say that it was not particularly difficult to find it so, it’s an exception to the issue I have mentioned a moment ago, but it required a careful and sometimes tedious selection, as usual, due to the excess of misplaced tampos in the diecasts available of this model.

The Lamborghini Veneno debuted in 2014 in the Mainline, it was designed by Kevin Cao and so far, it has only 4 iterations, including an exclusive version made for Wal-Mart, with Zamac finishing.

Mine belongs to the HW City - Speed Team Series, part of the Regular lines and it’s a variant of the first Veneno in silver Metalflake.

It has diecast body and black plastic chassis, the level of detail and proportion are quite acceptable, my sincere congrats to Kevin; the paint job was made in orange with Metalflake finishing and there are tampos for the head lights and some fine stripes on the side panels (replicating those of the actual Car Zero prototype, introduced in the 2013 Geneva Motor Show).

The interiors in black are very decent, it has clear windows, the plastic wheels featuring Phill Rielhman 5 Spoke (PR5) rims design, with chrome contour and it was made in Malaysia...

Mat 11:20-24 "Then began Jesus Christ to upbraid the cities wherein most of His mighty works were done, because they repented not: woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. But I say unto you: it shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you. And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. But I say unto you: that it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom, in the day of judgment, than for thee."
