2014 Nissan Vision 2020 Gran Turismo - Compact 2-Door Fastback Coupe Concept Car / Super Sports Car / Super Car / Grand Tourer - 2016 Hot Wheels Entertainment / Gran Turismo Series 3/5 Diecast Scale 1:66 by Hot Wheels

Concept cars developed for videogames, that somehow manage to become actual prototypes, displaying elements of design that will be included in production vehicles, in the short or middle term, would sound like a rather farfetched idea barely 25 years ago...

But that kind of things are no longer farfetched, considering the situation of a world scenario where the virtual or digital media in general terms are becoming an influence increasingly powerful, prevalent and that’s far from being a mere coincidence, if you ask me...

Even less considering that the whole industry segments belong to a few families around the world, as well as the banking system, the media, the commerce and that’s how trends are easily pushed on the population worldwide: with such a level of control, coincidences simply have no place...

My guest for this publication is a clear example of the trend already mentioned in the beginning, an idea proposed to different renowned brands, not only from the car industry, by the team of Polyphony Digital Inc., creators of the Gran Turismo franchise for the PlayStation platform.

Only for 2014, eleven car brands joined the line-up: Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Mitsubishi, Volkswagen, Toyota, Aston Martin, Chevrolet, Subaru, Mazda, Infiniti and obviously, Nissan; almost every year, ever since, more brands are joining, each one contributing their own virtual car to this project Vision idea.

Several of these concepts remain as just that, concepts, but that’s not the case with the 2014 Nissan Vision 2020 Gran Turismo, a Compact 2-Door Fastback Coupe Concept Car / Super Sports Car / Super Car / Grand Tourer.

A (non-functional) prototype was introduced at the 2014 Goodwood Festival of Speed, an event that took place in the deepest West Sussex, United Kingdom, along with another prototype of the Aston Martin DP-100 Vision Gran Turismo Concept and a bunch of way more down to earth vehicles, from different brands.

The 2014 Nissan Vision 2020 Gran Turismo, heavily based on the Nissan GT-R, produced since 2007, was developed with the collaboration of Nissan Design Europe and Nissan Technical Centre: the result shows a retrofuturistic approach, with a weird 90’s concept car taste, that somehow looks current, with an appealing, but kind of heavy silhouette, that keeps the essence of the GT-R...

I’m returning for the review featured today, to a Line of products developed by Hot Wheels since 2013, introduced as Retro Entertainment, of which I have been publishing some vehicles included in its numerous assortments or mixes, like here, here, here, here and here...

This Line includes several Series representing different franchises and I have to say that you can find a very interesting selection of car "celebrities", as well of other kind of iconic vehicles or means of transportation, but the overall execution is barely seemly in most cases, with a few ups and a lot of downs: exactly what you should expect from this brand, as knowledgeable collector.

I got this item through the secondary market, with the help of a friend of mine, fellow collector and importer / private seller, pretty much 9 years ago, by the time it was originally released and it was relatively easy to find at that moment.

Despite the popularity of the videogame, the toy car version of this concept car has not been a great favorite, but for me, that’s much better since: one, I try to avoid "popular" stuff and two, I really like the design proposal made with this car.

The product was developed by Mark Jones, a designer I’m familiar with and I admire his work, the proof of this is, well, I have several items designed in their toy car form by him; curiously, this model has had only 2 iterations, a very underused item, for Lines in the Adult category (very misleadingly tagged as "Premium") and both iterations are virtually identical.

My guest belongs to the 2016 Hot Wheels Entertainment / Gran Turismo Series and the other version was made for the parallel Line 2024 Pop Culture / Gran Turismo 7 Series.

It offers full diecast construction (body and chassis), the level of detail is good, but the complex curves of the actual car were poorly presented in the mold, specially at the top of the fenders; sometimes, like this time, plastic inserts or the synergy of the plastic parts / molds, with the diecast molds can offer a better presentation of the product.

What I mean is that the two-parts rear fender of the actual car, should be represented properly with a plastic insert or modifying the interiors mold to include this black / gunmetal "fender spoiler", as well as the rear wing, but Hot Wheels decided to go with its typical cost-cutting policy and that aspect punish the product clearly (Hot Wheels being Hot Wheels, you know).

The paint job was made in silver with Metalflake finishing, very similar to the one used in one of the non-functional prototypes, the rear fender spoiler and the rear wing received black paint with satin finishing, that was sprayed, instead of tampoed and the finishing leaves to be desired; the chassis received black satin paint and that’s a nice touch.

It was complemented by a minimalistic decoration, for the head and tail lights, as well as an edging on the windshield, with tampos and/or decals, in black, white and dark red; the approach used here works fine in this kind of model.

The interiors were worked in black, with a very basic level of detail; the windows are smoked; the multipart Real Riders wheels feature Modern Concave rims design, that is not even similar to the one used in the actual car, but looks nice, in black finishing with chrome lip, slick synthetic rubber tires, bigger at the rear, unlike the actual car and it was made in Malaysia...

Act 24:1-8 "And after five days Ananias the high priest descended with the elders, and with a certain orator named Tertullus, who informed the governor against Paul. And when he was called forth, Tertullus began to accuse him, saying, seeing that by thee we enjoy great quietness, and that very worthy deeds are done unto this nation by thy providence, we accept it always, and in all places, most noble Felix, with all thankfulness. Notwithstanding, that I be not further tedious unto thee, I pray thee that thou wouldest hear us of thy clemency a few words. For we have found this man a pestilent fellow, and a mover of sedition among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes: Who also hath gone about to profane the temple: whom we took, and would have judged according to our law. But the chief captain Lysias came upon us, and with great violence took him away out of our hands, commanding his accusers to come unto thee: by examining of whom thyself mayest take knowledge of all these things, whereof we accuse him."

2009 Nissan GT-R (R35) Phase I - Compact 2-Door 2+2 Fastback Coupe Sports Car / Super Car / Grand Tourer (Japanese Specs) - 2016 Hot Wheels Entertainment / Gran Turismo Series 5/5 Diecast Scale 1:66 by Hot Wheels

In this review, I’m starting to address a topic that I briefly introduced here, regarding the strategy that Hot Wheels developed and implemented since the early 2000s, in order to entice adult collectors with its products; a strategy that has not been so consistent in terms of quality through time and it’s still far from what other brands are offering for the same market segment.

Of course, in this strategy the external licensing has been an essential factor to consider, when it comes to explore the potential of toy cars as collectibles, because while children are not so demanding in terms of how faithfully reproduced is a vehicle, in the form of toy car, adult collectors are a completely different story.

Indeed, Hot Wheels and Matchbox, divisions of Mattel, depend mainly on external licensing from the existing vehicle manufacturers worldwide, a trait that share with other toy cars brands like Majorette or Tomica, but there is also another field of external licensing that represents an important source of inspiration and development of products...

I’m talking about the world of brands, companies and/or products, that have achieved a high degree of recognition and remembrance among the general public, becoming "cultural icons", in the understanding of a culture heavily permeated by consumerism and propaganda, like ours...

This field, I mean, external licensing related with "icons" of the so called "popular culture", is something that Hot Wheels and Matchbox share even with manufacturers of scale replicas: it’s no wonder, since this field is extremely lucrative, hence, it tends to be overexploited by developers of toys and collectibles.

In the case of Hot Wheels, there are at least two Lines focused on "icons of the popular culture", with their respective Sub-Lines and Series, that have been part of its portfolio since 2011: Nostalgic Brands, replaced in 2013 by the Pop Culture Line and Hot Wheels Entertainment.

At least at the beginning, these Lines took two clear directions: in the first hand, Nostalgic Brands / Pop Culture would include different existing models like: box trucks, panel vans, coupe utilities, step vans, station wagons, semi trucks, sedans delivery, pickup trucks, SUVs, tanker trucks, motorhomes, coupes, convertibles, etc.

These items, either based on actual vehicles or concept / designer / fantasy / original / internally licensed models, feature decorations taken from: TV series, comics, cereal brands, candy / chocolate brands, famous illustrators, ice cream brands, music artists, videogames, movies, oil companies, aftermarket accessories developers, toys brands, etc.

But there is no direct connection between the vehicles selected and the brands represented, except that the first ones work fine as advertising boards.

On the other hand, Hot Wheels Entertainment, that was introduced originally as Retro Entertainment, changing later to Hot Wheels Entertainment and it’s currently marketed as Replica Entertainment, that basically reproduces vehicles featured in some of the most popular: movies, TV series (either real action or animations), videogames, comics, automotive events, etc.

In this case, there is a direct connection between the "popular icon" represented and the vehicle included, but obviously, since we are talking about toy cars, the level of resemblance with the actual vehicles represented is very limited, that’s why call them "replicas", is not only pretentious, it’s decidedly falacious.

It’s worth remembering something that’s crystal clear for experienced adult collectors, but not so much or it’s absolutely ignored by buyers and collectors wannabes: scale replicas are NOT toy cars and toy cars are NOT scale replicas, if you don’t know the difference, you’re not merely ignorant in basic matters of collectionism, NO, you’re just blind...

Now, from the experienced adult collector’s point view, the second Line mentioned, namely Hot Wheels Entertainment, is of a greater interest; in my particular case, because of the concepts that audiovisual products and some "icons of the popular culture" display, that in most cases go beyond the pernicious influence of consumerism and propaganda.

After all, what most people do not realize or do not understand, is that the value of these "icons of the popular culture" actually does not lie in their popularity, which arises mostly from mental conditioning, but in their nature as cultural assets, symbols of our society, for better or worse...

There are more aspects to address regarding this topic and it’s worth to look beyond the typical easy flattery of brand promoters, who hardly see a blemish in the way Hot Wheels and eventually Matchbox pretend to reach adult collectors, albeit judging by the products themselves, they are focused more in buyers and sales than in anything else, so in the future there will be more about this...

Besides, there will be time, if GOD allows, to speak about the actual vehicle that inspired my guest for this publication: the 2009 Nissan GT-R (R35) Phase I, a Compact 2-Door 2+2 Fastback Coupe Sports Car / Super Car / Grand Tourer (Japanese Specs), that by the way, is one of my all time favorites of this typology of cars.

But this time let’s focus on the toy car I’m introducing, whose designer was Kevin Cao, an exponent of the New School in the design team of Hot Wheels, that started as an intern, but currently is a senior project designer; he has been responsible for a wide variety of models, either based on actual cars or concept / designer / fantasy / original / internally licensed models and I would say that there are more of the latter in his portfolio.

I got this item through the secondary market, with the help of a friend of mine, fellow collector and importer / private seller, more than 6 years ago; it was originally released in 2009, for the New Models Series, part of the Mainline (Regular category); it has had at least 12 iterations, including variations, for Lines in the Regular and Adult categories.

My guest belongs to the 2016 Hot Wheels Entertainment / Gran Turismo Series and it’s one of the three iterations / variations created for Adult Lines; the other two were featured in the 2010 Speed Machines Series.

It offers full diecast construction (body and chassis), the level of detail is good, but it has room for improvements, the lack of the A pillars is particularly annoying; for a change, the chassis included some details too and that’s something I appreciate.

The paint job was made in black with glossy finishing, both for the body and the chassis, but I would like to see another color or finishing for the latter, for instance, dark gray or black satin, in order to add some contrast and it wouldn’t involve a drastic increase in production costs or an increase at all, but again, Hot Wheels cannot fight against the law of the least effort...

It was complemented by a simple decoration, on the hood, tail and side panels, with tampos and/or decals, in white and red; the design of this decoration could be better, to be honest.

The interiors were worked in dark silver, with a basic level of detail; the mold for the smoked windows included the A pillars and the headlights, also, there were included nice tampos and/or decals for the windshield, in black and white. The multipart Real Riders wheels feature 6 Spokes rims design, similar to the one used from factory in the actual car, with 7 Spokes, in black finishing with chrome lip, styled synthetic rubber tires, equal size in front and rear, which is very welcome for any model and it was made in Malaysia...

Act 22:27-30 "And it came to pass, that, as I made my journey, and was come nigh unto Damascus about noon, suddenly there shone from heaven a great light round about me. And I fell unto the ground, and heard a voice saying unto me, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? And I answered, Who art thou, LORD? And he said unto me, I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom thou persecutest. And they that were with me saw indeed the light, and were afraid; but they heard not the voice of him that spake to me. And I said, What shall I do, LORD? And the LORD said unto me: Arise, and go into Damascus; and there it shall be told thee of all things which are appointed for thee to do. And when I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of them that were with me, I came into Damascus."

English version
The profile of Ford Motor Company has been associated with mass production vehicles of different typologies, very much in line with what other brands with a similar profile, like Chevrolet and Dodge, in the market of United States, have offered consistently through their existence...

That has been a common denominator in the automotive industry of the land of the star studded flag: popular and unpretentious vehicles, manufactured massively for the average consumer, with certain exceptions of course, because vehicles focused on luxury, high performance, sophistication, flamboyance and exclusivity, have been more associated with the European market and I don’t think that’s a mere coincidence: randomness in economic affairs (including of course the automotive industry) is a big sophism...

I mean, the main ambition of Henry Ford, patriarch of this company, was to build motor cars for the multitude, affordable and easy to operate, in order to make these means of transportation an option for almost anyone, not just for affluent people.

At least in part, it explains the great stir caused by the surprising triumph of a new, for the time, development created through a collaboration between Ford and Shelby, in the most important endurance racing worldwide: the 24 Hours of Le Mans, because the brand of the blue oval was not known by its "pedigree" in this kind of competitions.

Precisely, paying a homage to a singular development for racing, this company decided, pretty much 40 years later, to create a grand tourers / super cars line, called simply Ford GT and today I’m introducing an specimen of the second generation of this car: the 2017 Ford GT, a 2-Seater Coupe Grand Tourer Sports Car / Super Car.

It’s the street version of this beast, but as you could expect from a proper homage, there is also a racing version that does not differ too much regarding its counterpart and it was the same case with the first generation of the Ford GT, released in 2005.

Faithfful to its motorsports roots, the 2017 Ford GT oozes performance for each one of its "metallic pores", I mean, it actually delivers the performance "promised" by its appearance, but unlike the unsightly Enzo Ferrari (what a pertinent and caustic comparison!), its outstanding aerodynamics was not an obstacle for a stunning design, that still reminds you its legendary point of reference from the 60s, only that a little bit more futuristic...

A car like the Ford GT, whether in its 2005 or 2017 flavors, does not lack of reproductions in the form of collectibles, both as scale replica and as toy car; that’s to be expected, because it’s virtually a sure bet for any developer and/or manufacturer of these items: that’s good new for us, collectors...

When it comes to toy cars pretty much 1:64 scale, there are at least four options to consider from brands established in this segment: Tomica, Majorette, Maisto and Hot Wheels; since by the time I was in the search of this model, the versions by Majorette and particularly Tomica were difficult to get, at a decent price, also since the Maisto products are not so good when it comes to quality and not so easy to find either, well, I settled with the one offered by Hot Wheels.

The designer behind this model is Mark Jones and I have to say that his work has been one of my favorites in the Hot Wheels Team, several toy cars already published and more on the way, are proof of my respect for him; it was released originally for 2016 and it has had at least 16 iterations, including variations, for lines in the Regular and Adult categories.

I got two of the three releases for 2016, one of them through the primary market, in a local retail store and the other through the secondary market, with the help of a friend of mine, fellow collector and importer / private seller, pretty much 6 years ago.

It was rather easy to find them, for a decent price, but it was just a matter of time for Series like Hot Wheels Entertainment: Forza Motorsport, an Adult line to which belongs my second guest, to become harder to get and more expensive than what I would consider proportional for this kind of items: that time was barely two years later.

These toy cars offer diecast body and dark silver plastic chassis for the first sample and full diecast construction for the second sample; the overall level of detail for both models is very decent, bearing in mind their nature, but there are two points that really detract from the result in terms of appearance and realism.

You can see clearly that a portion of the body, behind the doors, where they meet the pontoons that house the rear wheels, is plastic, not diecast and this same rear portion of the body, where the pontoons design is more evident, is sealed, instead of hollow, as you find in the actual car.

Was it a design decision?, I really doubt about it, because in the examples by Tomica, Majorette and Maisto, the portion of the rear pontoons is more faithfully represented, I mean, the tunnels at the rear, that help to create downforce in the actual car, are hollow, but in the example by Hot Wheels are sealed, as I already mentioned and we are talking about toy cars in all the cases, then, what it a cost-cutting measure?, is it necessary to answer the latter question?...

Tomica in special, also Majorette and even Maisto do a better job in these points, but it’s a Hot Wheels after all, you can’t really expect too much from its products, I mean, on several occasions, with this brand you don’t get not even the minimum you expect from a toy car, in particular in its more recent products and if you want to get something more appropriate, the price will rise to ridiculously high levels...

The paint job for both toy cars is only slightly different, with the second sample a bit darker, in sapphire blue with Metalflake finishing, similar to the Liquid Blue used as "official" color for vehicles developed by Ford Performance, only that is not available from factory, unless buyers pay at least US$30,000 extra.

The first sample from the Regular line is complemented only by a pair of decals for the head lights and a blue oval emblem at front; in the sample of the Adult line, on the other hand, is added a decoration with tampos in white, featuring white racing stripes and logos from Forza Motorsport, eventually some decals are used too, the "nostrils" at front received black paint, and the chassis received dark silver paint, which is a nice touch.

However, for the tail lights it was used the hideous digital inject printing and one or two years later, the whole decoration would be made with this finishing, replacing tampos and/or decals, making these toy cars too expensive for what they have to offer.

The first sample has black interiors, while in the second are dark silver, both with a basic level of detail and both feature smoked windows; the wheels are single-piece plastic featuring Phil Riehlman 5 Spokes rims design in medium gray and multipart Real Riders wheels featuring 5 Spokes rims design in dark silver, styled synthetic rubber tires, respectively; finally, both were made in Malaysia...

Act 21:27-30 "And when the seven days were almost ended, the Jews which were of Asia, when they saw him in the temple, stirred up all the people, and laid hands on him, crying out, Men of Israel, help: This is the man, that teacheth all men every where against the people, and the law, and this place: and further brought Greeks also into the temple, and hath polluted this holy place. (For they had seen before with him in the city Trophimus an Ephesian, whom they supposed that Paul had brought into the temple.) And all the city was moved, and the people ran together: and they took Paul, and drew him out of the temple: and forthwith the doors were shut."
