La última semana de septiembre de 2022, fui testigo de algo que por alguna razón retorcida se convirtió en "normal" y esto me recordó acerca de las miles de cosas que están siendo "normalizadas", en aras de intereses oscuros, a pesar del hecho que son, en el mejor de los casos anormalidades y en el peor de los casos aberraciones, así que cualquiera con dos dedos de frente plantearía algunas preguntas en vista de la situación irregular descrita...
Por ejemplo y supongo la más importante: ¿por qué las personas tienden a aceptar estas anormalidades o aberraciones como "cosas normales", a pesar de su naturaleza evidente?, quiero decir, evidente para cualquiera que se tome el tiempo de reflexionar sobre ellas, sacando sus propias conclusiones, en lugar de seguir las corrientes de pensamiento corruptas impuestas sobre ellos...
Y bueno, estas "cosas normales", que no son y nunca serán normales, son impuestas gradualmente, de otra forma serían rechazadas categóricamente y en este proceso, la repetición sistemática de mentiras es esencial.
Una vez que las personas se acostumbran a esas mentiras, que al principio son sutiles y elaboradas, con el tiempo pueden ser convencidas con mentiras burdas y descaradas, y así es como lo anormal y aberrante llega a ser "normal": este principio de manipulación ha sido aplicado consistentemente en muchos ámbitos, como: economía, política, ciencia, medicina, asuntos sociales, medios masivos, relaciones interpersonales y laborales, comercio, gobierno, cultura, etc...
Ahora, en ese largo ‘etc’ de aplicaciones, el coleccionismo está incluido, desgraciadamente, solo en el remoto caso que pensaras que el tema introducido para esta publicación no tiene nada que ver con esta afición, porque sí o más bien es algo que afecta muy negativamente al coleccionismo.
Entonces, permíteme describir la situación que atestigué muy recientemente, que a propósito involucró el auto de juguete introducido para esta publicación, solo que en su versión para la categoría Regular (Línea Principal), una situación que se convirtió "mágicamente" en algo "normal" en nuestra afición...
Vi publicada para la venta en una red social, una ECTO-1 de Hot Wheels, de la Línea Principal, el modelo debút, a un precio más alto de lo que debería, con todo más bajo que en otras publicaciones que he visto a lo largo de estos años.
¿Y adivina qué?, hubo un montón de gente interesada en este artículo sobrevaluado y fue vendido en un instante, tan fácil como eso, nadie preguntó: ¿por qué tanto?, ¿es un precio razonable?, nada, los compradores aceptaron esta anormalidad, porque así es como proceden, pensar no es requerido, pero despilfarrar dinero sí, es "normal" y no hay necesidad de discutir acerca de esto, punto...
Pero NO, no es ni de cerca normal, porque es especulación impúdica con los precios y cualquier coleccionista con un conocimiento promedio sabría eso, aunque supongo que a pesar de las apariencias, no había ni un solo coleccionista en ese grupo de compradores incompetentes.
Por eso es que para mí como coleccionista, es claro como el cristal que comprar juguetes y/o coleccionables no te hace "mágica" o automáticamente coleccionista.
Y sí, necesitamos discutir sobre esto, con el fin de entender porque no es normal, ni hablar de aceptable, ¿de acuerdo?, así que aclaremos los hechos, respondiendo algunas preguntas que cualquier coleccionista plantearía antes de una decisión de compra.
Porque nosotros siempre buscamos características especiales o particularidades que eventualmente podrían justificar un incremento de precio con el tiempo, nosotros simplemente no aceptamos la especulación, como lo hacen los compradores.
Entonces, analicemos algunos aspectos importantes de esta ECTO-1, lanzada para la Línea Principal en 2011, a saber, un auto de juguete básico que no justifica esos precios ridículos en el mercado secundario, ¿deberíamos?...
• Por ejemplo: ¿ofrece ruedas multiparte, ya sea con llantas plásticas o de caucho sintético?
• NO, justo las ruedas plásticas de 1 pieza que consigues por defecto con artículos de la Línea Principal; además, debemos recordar que los Super Treasure Hunts, una serie parte de la Línea Principal, con todas las implicaciones derivadas de ese hecho, ofrecen esa característica en casi todos los casos, luego NO, esto no necesariamente añade valor (más sobre esto después).
• ¿Ofrece chasis en diecast?
• NO, solo el chasis plástico con acabado cromado habitual que obtienes con artículos de la Línea Principal, especialmente al momento de su lanzamiento e incluso si ese fuera el caso, debemos considerar que la construcción completa en diecast era estándar en la mayoría de modelos de la Línea Principal, al menos hasta los 90s y aún en la década de los 2010s, no era una característica excepcional, este cambio sucedería poco después de eso, así que NO, esto no necesariamente añade valor.
• ¿Ofrece trabajo de pintura y/o acabados especiales?
• NO, solo el trabajo de pintura estándar, con tampos y/o calcomanías que esperas de cualquier artículo de la Línea Principal; además, incluso si tuviera un trabajo de pintura especial, como sucede con los Super Treasure Hunts, por ejemplo, ambos son parte de la Línea Principal, por tanto su precio de referencia, a saber el precio que consigues en el mercado primario, es exactamente el mismo precio de cualquier artículo de la categoría Regular.
El precio en reventa o mercado secundario, no cuenta en absoluto como precio de referencia, nunca lo hará, al momento de su lanzamiento original, Super Treasure Hunts o no, es el mismo precio que tú pagarías por cualquiera de ellos encontrados en las gancheras de cualquier tienda minorista, como debería ser, no puedo recalcar lo suficiente este hecho, entonces de nuevo NO, esto no necesariamente añade valor.
• ¿Es un artículo raro?
• NO, ya que la rareza tiene que ver con hace cuánto fue lanzado un coleccionable originalmente (algo que expliqué aquí y aquí) y nada por debajo de los 30 años en el mercado puede ser considerado propiamente raro, entonces y teniendo en mente que este coche de juguete ECTO-1 fue lanzado apenas hace 11 años, la rareza no aplica en este caso.
• ¿Al menos fue ofrecido como un producto de baja producción (más de 3.000, pero menos de 25.000 unidades) o edición limitada (menos de 3.000 unidades)?
• NO, este es un carro de juguete de la Línea Principal (¿lo mencioné antes?), es tan obvio que duele, con todo la gente pasa por alto este hecho tan fácilmente y ¿qué significa?, bueno, significa que millones de unidades de este auto de juguete fueron hechas, literalmente, por consiguiente, debería ser relativamente fácil de encontrar, incluso hoy en día...
Y alguien con algo de perspicacia preguntaría: ¿entonces, por qué es tan difícil conseguir una de ellas, particularmente a un precio decente?
Bien, ya que millones de ECTO-1 fueron hechas para su debút en 2010, justo como sucede con cualquier otro artículo de la Línea Principal, entonces el problema no es la disponibilidad, obviamente, el problema es el acaparamiento y a través del acaparamiento, los especuladores crean falsa escasez de la nada.
Este truco burdo ha sido usado consistentemente al menos desde 1995, cuando se trata de productos de Hot Wheels, pero el mismo viejo truco ha sido usado con otra clase de artículos de otras marcas.
Déjame añadir que recuerdo claramente como aquí en mi ciudad natal (Bogotá, D.C., Colombia, Suramérica), los primeros meses de 2010, podías conseguir fácilmente esta ECTO-1 en cualquier tienda minorista local y tuve varias oportunidades para obtener una de ellas.
Sin embargo, estaba interesado en un lanzamiento de una línea Adulta, el cual arribaría más o menos 3 años después y ¿adivina qué?, en asunto de menos de 2 meses, desaparecieron de las gancheras "mágicamente", todas ellas, no solo aquí, fue un fenómeno a nivel mundial, donde productos de Hot Wheels son ofrecidos.
Quiero decir, "desapareció" de las gancheras a un ritmo mucho más rápido de lo que puede ser explicado a través de la tasa promedio de ventas de estos productos, incluso cuando son populares y desde entonces, ves estas ECTO-1 de la Línea Principal publicadas para venta a precios ridículamente altos, una y otra vez, y personas ignorantes mordiendo el anzuelo cada vez...
¿Es demasiado difícil darse cuenta que los acaparadores / especuladores están detrás de esta situación anormal, en serio?...
Una vez consideras los factores ya mencionados, que representan solo parte de lo que tienes en cuenta como coleccionista antes de una decisión de compra, dependiendo del coleccionable específico, factores que eventualmente justificarían un cierto incremento en el precio para el lanzamiento original de la ECTO-1 y por supuesto, factores que este modelo NO cumple, tienes que preguntar: ¿entonces, por qué cuesta tanto?...
Pero ese es precisamente el punto: en realidad no vale tanto, es estúpido pagar tanto por ella y ¿sabes qué?, para que la especulación funcione, necesitas dos elementos: un individuo lo suficientemente despreciable y codicioso para estafar personas sin sonrojarse, y un individuo lo suficientemente inepto e impulsado por el ego como para pagar de más sin pestañear.
Hay todavía mucha gente con estos perfiles allá afuera, pretendiendo ser vendedores y coleccionistas respectivamente, así que sucede a menudo; entonces, personas por fuera de esta afición atestiguando semejante circo piensan, equivocadamente, que el coleccionismo se trata de un vulgar mercado negro.
No obstante, el coleccionismo no tiene nada que ver con eso y el hecho que esta situación suceda frecuentemente no prueba lo contrario o lo hace normal, para nada...
Sí solo la gente estuviera más dispuesta a reflexionar y cuestionar lo que acontece a su alrededor, en vez de creer ciegamente lo que algunas personas corrompidas quieren plantear, probablemente estas anormalidades o aberraciones no llegaría a ser "normales" tan fácilmente como lo hacen...
Habrá tiempo, si DIOS permite, para hablar del vehículo real en el cual se basa este coche de juguete, en consecuencia, me enfocaré brevemente en mi invitada para esta reseña y como ya mencioné, estaba esperando por ella desde que debutó como un carro de juguete básico de la Línea Principal (categoría Regular) y finalmente arribó en 2013, como parte del primer mix / lote de la Serie Retro Entertainment, una línea parte de la categoría Adulta...
Por cierto, NO, no estaba interesado en el lanzamiento hecho para Hot Wheels Collectors / Red Line Club o el que se hizo para la Convención de Cómic de San Diego (SDCC, por sus siglas en inglés), ambas en 2010, que por obvias razones son objeto de especulación obscena, luego gracias, pero NO gracias...
Conseguí esta versión auto de juguete de la ECTO-1, en el mercado secundario, con la ayuda de un amigo mío, colega coleccionista e importador, hace más o menos 9 años; justo como sucedió con otros artículos que tengo de esta línea, la conseguí poco después que fue lanzada originalmente, para evitar la especulación con precios que llegaría poco después y que continua hasta el día presente.
El modelo fue desarrollado por Manson Cheung, un modelador 3D que llegó a ser parte del equipo Hot Wheels en 2000, colaborando de cerca con los diseñadores, para transformar sus ideas en productos tridimensionales, pero también ha diseñado coches de juguete, enfocándose principalmente en vehículos creados para cómics, películas, series de TV, animaciones, etc.
El modelo ha tenido al menos 12 iteraciones, incluyendo variaciones, para líneas en las categorías Regular, Adulta y De Lujo, eso es de esperarse con esta clase de modelos, basados en íconos de la cultura popular y muchas otras iteraciones vendrán, ¿entonces, cuál es el punto de pagar cantidades ridículas de dinero por cualquiera de ellas?...
Han habido otras versiones de este vehículo en la forma de juguetes, réplicas a escala, vehículos de radio control, model kits y otros modelos para ensamblar, hechos por: LEGO, Jada, Auto World, Kenner, Blitzway, Eaglemoss, NKOK, Hallmark, Funko Pop, Playmobil, Joy Ride, Johnny Lightning, AMT (ECTO-1A), Titans, Polar Lights, entre otras, disponibles en muchas escalas, como si los modelos a escala en diecast y carros de juguete no fueran suficientes para escoger.
Tiene carrocería y chasis en diecast, el nivel de detalle es muy bueno para un auto de juguete, el cual no es el caso con todos los modelos presentados en esta línea; el trabajo de pintura fue hecho en blanco con acabado perlado / Metalflake, complementado por una decoración muy simple con tampos y/o calcomanías en rojo, negro y plateado, sobre los paneles laterales y traseros.
Pero a diferencia de su contraparte de la Línea Principal, el paquete del techo (que es removible, un detalle grandioso en efecto), recibió detalles pintados en verde manzana y rojo, más bien descuidados en la aplicación y una capa de resina, las barras de luces frontales y traseras también recibieron pintura azul, pero el chasis fue dejado sin pintar.
Los interiores en plateado tienen un nivel de detalle más que decente, lo que es muy inusual, mientras las ventanas son transparentes e incluyen una bonita claraboya, que es visible cuando el paquete del techo es removido; las ruedas multiparte son Real Riders presentando diseño de rimes White Wall Wire Spokes en cromado, uno de los diseños de ruedas más detallados jamás desarrollados por Hot Wheels, usado muy pocas veces, llantas en caucho sintético labradas y fue hecha en Malasia...

The last week of September 2022, I was witness of something that for some twisted reason became "normal" and it reminded me about the thousands of things that are being "normalized", for the sake of obscure interests, despite the fact they are, in the best case abnormalities and in the worst case aberrations, so anyone with half a brain would raise some questions in view of the irregular situation described...
For instance and I guess the most important: why people tend to accept these abnormalities or aberrations as "normal things", despite their evident nature?, I mean, evident for anyone who takes the time to ponder about them, drawing their own conclusions, instead of following the corrupt currents of though imposed on them...
And well, these "normal things", that are not and will never be normal, are imposed gradually, otherwise they would be rejected categorically and in this process, the systematic repetition of lies is essential.
Once people get used to these lies, that at the beginning are subtle and elaborated, over time they can be convinced with blatant and coarse lies, and that’s how abnormal or aberrant become "normal": this principle of manipulation has been applied consistently in many fields, like: economy, politics, science, medicine, social matters, mass media, interpersonal and employment relationships, commerce, government, culture, etc...
Now, in that long ‘etc’ of applications, collectionism is included, unfortunately, just in the remote case you thought the topic introduced for this publication has nothing to do with this hobby, because it does or rather it’s something that affects very negatively collectionism.
Then, let me describe the situation I witnessed very recently, which by the way involved the toy car introduced for this publication, only that in its version for the Regular category (Mainline), a situation that became "magically" something "normal" in our hobby...
I saw published for sale in a social network, an ECTO-1 by Hot Wheels, from the Mainline, the debut model, at a higher price than it should, yet lower than in other publications I have seen along these years.
And guess what?, there were a lot of people interested in this overpriced item and it was sold in an instant, as easy as that, nobody asked: why so much?, is that a reasonable price?, nothing, buyers accepted this abnormality, because that’s how they proceed, thinking is not required, but wasting money does, it’s "normal" and there is no need to discuss about it, period...
But NO, it’s not even close to normal, because it’s impudent speculation with prices and any collector with an average knowledge would know that, although I guess that despite the appearances, there was not a single collector in that group of incompetent buyers.
That’s why for me as collector, it’s crystal clear that buying toys and/or collectibles doesn’t make you "magically" or automatically collector.
And yeah, we need to discuss about it, in order to understand why it’s not normal, let alone acceptable, OK?, so let’s get the facts right, answering some questions that any collector would raise before a purchase decision.
Because we always look for special features or particularities that eventually could justify an increase in price over time, we just don’t accept speculation, as buyers do.
Then, let’s analyze some important aspects of this ECTO-1, released for the Mainline in 2011, namely, a basic toy car that do not justify those ridiculous prices in the secondary market, shall we?...
• For instance: does it offer multipart wheels, either with plastic or synthetic rubber tires?
• NO, just the usual 1-piece plastic wheels you get by default with items from the Mainline; besides, we must remember that Super Treasure Hunts, a series part of the Mainline, with all the implications derived from that fact, offered that feature in almost all cases, so NO, it doesn’t necessarily add value (more about this later).
• Does it offer diecast chassis?
• NO, only the usual plastic chassis with chrome finishing you get by default with items from the Mainline, specially at the moment of its release and even if that were the case, we must consider that a full diecast construction was standard in most models from the Mainline, at least until the 90s and even in the decade of the 2010s, it was not an exceptional feature, this change would happen soon after that, so NO, it doesn’t necessarily add value.
• Does it offer special paint job and/or finishes?
• NO, only the standard paint job, with tampos and/or decals you expect from any item from the Mainline; besides, even if it had a special paint job, like it happens with Super Treasure Hunts, for example, they are both part of the Mainline, hence their reference price, namely the price you get them in the primary market, is exactly the same price of any other item of the Regular category.
The price in resale or secondary market, does not count at all as reference price, it never will, at the moment of the original release, Super Treasure Hunts or not, it’s the same price you would pay for any of them found in the pegs of any retail store, as it should be, I cannot stress enough this fact, then again NO, it doesn’t necessarily add value.
• Is it a rare item?
• NO, since rarity has to do with how long ago was a collectible released originally (something I explained here and here) and nothing below 30 years in the market can be properly considered rare, then and bearing in mind that this ECTO-1 toy car was released barely 11 years ago, rarity doesn’t apply in this case.
• At least it was offered as a low production (more than 3,000, but less than 25,000 units) or limited edition (less than 3,000 units) product?
• NO, this is a toy car from the Mainline (did I mentioned it before?), it’s so obvious that it hurts, yet people overlook this fact so easily and what it means?, well, it means that millions of units of this toy car were made, literally, accordingly, it should be relatively easy to find, even nowadays...
And someone with some insight would ask: then, why is so hard to get one of them, particularly at a decent price?
Well, since millions of ECTO-1 were made for its debut in 2010, just like it happens with any other item of the Mainline, then the problem is not availability, obviously, the problem is hoarding and through hoarding, speculators create fake scarcity out of thin air.
This coarse trick has been used consistently at least since 1995, when it comes to Hot Wheels products, but the same old trick has been used with other kind of items by other brands.
Let me add that I recall clearly how here in my hometown (Bogotá, D.C., Colombia, South America), the first months of 2010, you could get easily this ECTO-1 at any local retail store and I had several chances to get one of them.
However, I was interested in a release from an Adult line, which would arrive pretty much 3 years later and guess what?, in a matter of less than 2 months, they "disappeared" from the pegs "magically", all of them, not only here, it was a worldwide phenomenon, where Hot Wheels products are offered.
I mean, it "disappeared" from the pegs at a pace way faster than what can be explained through the average rate of purchases for these products, even when they are popular and ever since, you see these ECTO-1 from the Mainline published for sale at ridiculously high prices, time and time again, and ignorant people biting the bait every time...
Is it too hard to realize that hoarders / scalpers are behind this abnormal situation, really?...
Once you consider the factors already mentioned, that represent only part of what you could take into account as collector before a purchasing decision, depending on the specific collectible, factors that would eventually justify a certain increase in price for the original release of the ECTO-1 and of course, factors that this model does NOT meet, you have to ask: then, why does it cost so much?...
But that’s precisely the point: actually it’s not worth that much, it’s stupid to pay that much for it and you know what?, for speculation to work, you need two elements: one individual despicable and greedy enough to scam people without blushing, and one individual inept and ego driven enough to pay in excess without batting an eye.
There are still many people with these profiles out there, pretending to be sellers and collectors respectively, so it happens often; then, people outside this hobby witnessing such a circus think, wrongly, that collectionism is all about a vulgar black market.
Nonetheless, collectionism has nothing to do with it and the fact that this situation happens frequently doesn’t prove otherwise or make it any normal, at all...
If only people were more willing to ponder and question what happens around them, instead of believing blindingly what some corrupt people want to come up with, probably these abnormalities and aberrations wouldn’t become "normal" so easily as they do...
There will be time, if GOD allows, to talk about the actual vehicle on which this toy car is based, accordingly, I will focus briefly on my guest for this review and as I already mentioned, I was waiting for it since it debuted as a basic toy car from the Mainline (Regular category) and finally it arrived in 2013, as part of the first mix / batch of the Retro Entertainment Series, a line part of the Adult category...
By the way, NO, I was not interested in the release made for Hot Wheels Collectors / Red Line Club or the one made for the San Diego Comic Convention (SDCC), both in 2010, that for obvious reasons are subject of obscene speculation, so thanks, but NO thanks...
I got this toy car version of the ECTO-1, in the secondary market, with the help of a friend of mine, fellow collector and importer, pretty much 9 years ago; just like it happened with other items I have from this line, I got it soon after it was originally released, to avoid the speculation with prices that will arrive soon after and that continues to the present day.
The model was developed by Manson Cheung, a 3D modeler who became part of the Hot Wheels team in 2000, collaborating closely with designers, to transform their ideas into three-dimensional products, but he has designed toy cars too, focusing mainly on vehicles created for comics, movies, TV series, animations, etc.
The model has had 12 iterations, including variations, for lines in the Regular, Adult and Deluxe categories, that’s to be expected with this kind of models, based on icons of popular culture and many other iterations will come, then, what’s the point of paying a ridiculous amount of money for any of them?...
There have been other versions of this vehicle in the form of toys, scale replicas, radio control vehicles, model kits and other models for assembling, made by: LEGO, Jada, Auto World, Kenner, Blitzway, Eaglemoss, NKOK, Hallmark, Funko Pop, Playmobil, Joy Ride, Johnny Lightning, AMT (ECTO-1A), Titans, Polar Lights, among others, available in many scales, as if the diecast scale models and toy cars weren’t enough to choose.
It has diecast body and chassis, the level of detail is very good for a toy car, which is not the case with all the models featured in this line; the paint job was made in white with pearled / Metalflake finishing, complemented by a very simple decoration with tampos and/or decals in red, black and silver, on the side and rear panels.
But unlike its counterpart form the Mainline, the roof pack (which is removable, a great detail indeed), received painted details in apple green and red, rather sloppy in the application and a layer of resin, the front and rear light bars also received blue paint, but the chassis was left unpainted.
The interiors in silver have a more than decent level of detail, which is very unusual, while the windows are clear and include a nice skylight, that is visible when the roof pack is removed; the multipart wheels are Real Riders featuring White Wall Wire Spokes rims design in chrome, one of the most detailed wheels design ever developed by Hot Wheels, used very few times, styled synthetic rubber tires and it was made in Malaysia...
