1999 Dodge Power Wagon Concept 4WD Regular Cab / Bed - Full Size 1/2 Ton Class 2B Light Duty Off-Road Pickup Truck - (Dodge Power Wagon) 2001 Hot Wheels Regular Series Diecast Scale 1:68 by Hot Wheels

I have the perception very ingrained in my mind, as designer, that concept vehicles let us know at least part of the potential in the automotive industry, represented by the hard work of designers, engineers and the rest of talented people who truly participate in the development of these projects...

The potential to create admirable products, where there is a good blend between ergonomics, aerodynamics, practicality, functionality, aesthetics, etc., vehicles that express fresh proposals to reimagine traditional means of transportation or made to revive models that stirred the market in the past, where innovation and creativity are materialized in singular ways, vehicles that provoke, defy conventionalisms...

However, this potential is dilapidated in a regular basis for the sake of profitability and other reasons concealed to the public, whereby many of these automotive marvels don’t make it to the production stage; if they ever do, the changes to the original concept are so extensive that you end wondering: what’s the point?...

My guest for the present publication is probably one of the most outstanding concepts ever developed by Dodge or even its parent establishment Chrysler: the 1999 Dodge Power Wagon Concept 4WD Regular Cab / Bed, a Full Size 1/2 Ton Class 2B Light Duty Off-Road Pickup Truck, introduced in the 1999 North America International Auto Show, for the delight of many.

The 1999 Power Wagon is the kind of concept vehicles that should have become reality, for many reasons, but it was archived for one reason: "officially" it was "too expensive to produce", nonetheless and knowing the shady negotiations behind the management of means of propulsion for vehicles, with a direct impact in the automotive industry, there is more behind this decision than what has been disclosed.

From the stylistic standpoint, this pickup truck was inspired by the now classic 1946 Power Wagon, an utilitarian vehicle originally developed for military use, that made its way to the civilian life with relatively few modifications, it was more than capable for businesses and farms, as well as for off-road activities: an extremely burly and functional truck that won the heart of many enthusiasts of this kind of products.

It’s a wonderful tribute, preserving the overall appearance but giving it a substantial dose of futurism, so much that it looks quite contemporary nowadays, with a design that screams utility and yet it’s sleek, luxurious, it has an upscale profile, taking some distance from the original referent, but even the proportions and size were respected: this concept was developed on the platform of the Ram 1500.

Created by the Head of Jeep Design and Senior Designer for the Dodge Truck Studio, Mark Allen, the 1999 Dodge Power Wagon was more than just a great looking pickup truck concept paying homage to an icon: it was a revolutionary vehicle powered by a massive 7.2 L, inline 6 turbocharged Caterpillar diesel engine, offering 300 hp and impressive 800 lb/ft of torque, but all that power produced fewer emissions than an equivalent gasoline engine.

Now, the mainstream media is constantly prattling about "propulsion technologies environmentally friendly" and you find very "curious" that, on the other hand, they keep promoting inefficient, impractical, expensive and very polluting technologies, including electric mobility (yeah, this option, as it’s posed by the predominant industry, is really far from being a replacement for fuels based on petroleum or even from being a proper solution for mobility on a large scale and the production of batteries is supremely polluting).

Nonetheless, when revolutionaries technologies, like the one used in the 1999 Dodge Power Wagon, which involved a synthetic fuel derived from diesel, that offered more than enough power, lots of torque and quite low emissions, a technology that doesn’t need monumental changes in infrastructure and it’s readily available, but it’s discarded because "it’s too expensive to produce", I guess it raises some questions, if you have a wisp of common sense, of course...

Welcome to another chapter of "the old good times of Hot Wheels, a brand that used to make good toy cars", I’m always happy to bring examples in my collection of the times when the blue brand of Mattel used to offer products that made sense, because nowadays the only items in its catalog that could represent a good product, are so ridiculously expensive in the secondary market and even the asking price is not on par with what you can get for that money, that they don’t count as examples of good value for money...

The model was designed by Gary Saffer and Phil Riehlman, the result is more than decent, despite the proportions were altered as happens with all toy cars made by Hot Wheels; it was introduced in 2000, it has had at least 12 iterations, all of them for the Mainline (Regular category), including one made in 2019 as a Wal-Mart Exclusive, that is just a slightly upgraded Regular line...

I got my guest for this review through the secondary market, with the help of a friend of mine, fellow collector and importer / private seller, nearly 10 years ago and I seriously doubt it was ever available in the local primary market; it belongs to the 2001 Hot Wheels Regular Series and it was the second color variation after its debut in silver, similar to the color of the actual vehicle.

This Power Wagon offers good level of detail, it has diecast body and dark silver plastic chassis, the proportion between diecast and plastic favors diecast, the weight feeling is nice and that’s great, for a change; the mold of the chassis includes the internal front grille, front and rear bumpers, while the mold of the interiors includes the bed / box cover, the windows are smoked and their mold includes the headlights, no doubt a detail I appreciate quite a bit.

The paint job was made in black with Metalflake finishing and it works fine in this model; the decoration is quite minimalist, with just a "Power Wagon" logo on the doors in white and red, also a "Dodge" logo in white on the tailgate, made with tampos.

Regarding the plastic wheels, they feature Off-Road Saw Blade rims design in chrome, a selection that is not precisely of my favorites, but that somehow works very well with this Power Wagon, because it has some similarities with its actual wheels and it was made in China...

Act 19:37-41 "For ye have brought hither these men, which are neither robbers of churches, nor yet blasphemers of your goddess. Wherefore if Demetrius, and the craftsmen which are with him, have a matter against any man, the law is open, and there are deputies: let them implead one another. But if ye inquire any thing concerning other matters, it shall be determined in a lawful assembly. For we are in danger to be called in question for this day's uproar, there being no cause whereby we may give an account of this concourse. And when he had thus spoken, he dismissed the assembly."

When was the last time you considered that working as delivery courier was an achievement in your life or that with this labor you would be contributing to the progress and welfare of the society around you?...

Put the goods that the industry and farming produce, in the hands of those who need or want them, the consumers, has been a crucial link in the chain of the world economy for centuries and until now, this fact has not changed at all...

Yet, people in general tend to see this labor with certain disdain, it seems like nobody wants to be related with such a humble and basic activity, it doesn’t seem like something you want to include in your resume as valuable experience...

To add to this arbitrary "stigma", people who work in the delivery business, I mean, those who do the hard job, are not well paid in many cases, because the money stays in the hands of those in higher positions, just like happens in many other economic segments.

However, it’s in situations of crisis (manufactured o real), like the one we are enduring these days, in which we are virtually locked down in our houses and we depend for many things of these humble men and women working in the logistics industry, that we start to understand how important are those basic activities...

And if we don’t want to understand, perhaps it would be better to know that this situation seems that will not change in the short or medium term.

Something similar, I mean, this sort of "stigma", happens with the vehicles created for these tasks, also known as workhorses: humble, basic, unpretentious means of transportation that hardly receive appreciation in most circles of "connoisseurs" in the matters of the automotive world, just because they are not as "refined" or "beautiful" as luxury or sports cars.

Nonetheless, if we look at vehicles from the perspective of how much do they contribute with our welfare in a concrete and real way, well, luxury and sports cars are just means to please our worldly whims, our ego, they’re vanities in a deep sense and the benefit they produce is merely subjective, while workhorses do fulfill tangible needs and in that sense, are much more worthy of our admiration and appreciation, just like the people who work with them...

That’s why there will always be place for workhorses in my collection and of course, in this blog; I’m pretty sure that they deserve more respect and I try to give them exactly that so, today I’m introducing representatives of one of these vehicles and a very unlikely companion that is related in more ways than one...

My guests are 4 examples of an old utility vehicle: the 1932 Ford Model B Sedan Delivery, a Compact (Full Size) 2-Door Light Utility Van / Panel Delivery, that was part of the options available for that year in the lineup of the iconic Ford Model B...

This toy car was developed by no other than the famous Larry Wood and released for the first time in 1989, for the Regular category (Mainline), but it also has been part of Adult lines; with at least 49 iterations, I would say it has seen some use, but since 2014 it has not been seen again.

And it’s not alone, as I guess you have noticed already, because I included a designer / concept / fantasy or original model by Hot Wheels, named Midnight Otto, designed by Gary Saffer and if you’re familiar with the cars from the 30s, you will know that it was based on the 1932 Ford Model B in its 2-Doors Sedan version, with at least 26 iterations, 6 of them for Adult lines and the rest for Regular lines.

I got all of them in the secondary market, with the help of a friend of mine, fellow collector and importer more than 7 years ago; these molds complement each other very well and show clearly how concept designer / concept / fantasy or original models are not too different to actual cars in many cases; besides, there is not a single car that has not started as concept car, none.

Both models feature full diecast construction, but in the case of the ’32 Ford Delivery, all the fenders section was made in plastic, as part of the same mold of the interiors, yet they still feel heavy in hand and heaviness is important in diecast toy cars (not so much in Premium adult models, although it is desirable), in the case of the Midnight Otto, the plastic chassis with modified front was introduced in 2009.

There is a good variety of paint jobs in the Ford Delivery, ranging from metallic light blue, to black, to metallic dark blue, to golden with Metalflake finishing and ending with pearled white for the Midnight Otto; the decorations are varied too, with 3 motley examples and 1 very clean for the Ford (the one I like the most) and the modern and neat decoration for the Midnight.

All the Ford feature clear windows, the front window looks bad because the upper pillar is too thick, with interiors in black, green, white and black respectively, they include an insert for the front grille and lights, with chrome finishing, a very good addition, while the Midnight has blacked windows and no interiors, that’s a complete shame.

The selection of rims design for the plastic wheels is: two Lace Wheels Wire Spoke, two 5 Spoke for the ’32 Ford Delivery and Phil Riehlman 5 Spoke for the Midnight Otto; regarding their provenance, well, the first 2 Ford were made in Malaysia, the next ones were made in Thailand and the Midnight was made in Malaysia...

Act 11:11-18 "And, behold, immediately there were three men already come unto the house where I was, sent from Caesarea unto me. And the SPIRIT bade me go with them, nothing doubting. Moreover these six brethren accompanied me, and we entered into the man's house: and he showed us how he had seen an angel in his house, which stood and said unto him: send men to Joppa, and call for Simon, whose surname is Peter; who shall tell thee words, whereby thou and all thy house shall be saved. And as I began to speak, the HOLY GHOST fell on them, as on us at the beginning. Then remembered I the word of the LORD, how that he said: John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the HOLY GHOST. Forasmuch then as GOD gave them the like gift as he did unto us, who believed on the LORD JESUS CHRIST; what was I, that I could withstand GOD? When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified GOD, saying: then hath GOD also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life."
