1968 Ford Shelby Mustang Cobra GT500 - Compact 2-Door 2+2 Fastback Coupe Pony Car / Muscle Car / Grand Tourer / Sports Car 2010 Carroll Shelby’s Cars Box Set Series - Limited Edition 1 of 5,000 Diecast Scale 1:64 plus 1968 Ford Shelby Mustang Cobra GT500 - Compact 2-Door 2+2 Fastback Coupe Pony Car / Muscle Car / Grand Tourer / Sports Car 2006 Shelby Series 1 Diecast Scale 1:64 by Shelby Collectibles

The relationship between Ford and Carroll Shelby, through his company Shelby American Incorporated, two big names in the industry of cars that have been building their own legendary reputation, was rather short when the first contact between them took place, but it was very, very fruitful...

The Ford GT40 was instrumental in this very successful association between the brand of the blue oval and the brand of the cobra, because after its pale debut in endurance racing, the management of the project was transferred from Ford Advanced Vehicles in Slough, United Kingdom to Shelby American in Venice, California, United States...

Somehow, even before some of history was written in motorsports, thanks to the epic performance of the GT40s in the 24 Hours of Le Mans between 1966 and 1969, a strong corporate bond emerged between these two North American companies.

Special versions of the already very popular Ford Mustang were beefed up by Shelby, in order to create an emblematic sports and eventually racing car, that still remains an icon among the numerous Ford and Shelby fans, but also for people "addict" to the world of racing.

This joint-venture started with the light and agile Ford Shelby Mustang GT350 in 1965, but in 1967 it was introduced the even more powerful GT500, of which my guest for the present publication: the 1968 Ford Shelby Mustang Cobra GT500, a Compact 2-Door 2+2 Fastback Coupe Pony Car / Muscle Car / Grand Tourer / Sports Car is the successor.

It was the second year of production of this model and I would say that in a not so gradual way, the involvement of Carroll Shelby and his company was transferred again to Ford, in a move that is very typical of large companies, that want all the control of their operations and products/ services, even the control of the competition if that’s within their reach.

While the ’68 Mustang Shelby Cobra GT500 didn’t lack of style, with a more aggressive overall design, neither of power with 428 cubic inches Police Interceptor V8, 427 cubic inches low-riser V8 or 248 cubic inches Cobra Jet powerplant options, probably the fact that Carroll Shelby was not as involved as before with these beasts, made this iteration and the subsequent ones, not as appealing as the previous ones: two legends working together are better than one alone...

In the automotive industry is not so usual to hear about car brands with a reputation already established, managing by themselves the development and production of scale replicas based on their products: normally these companies are contacted by manufacturers of collectibles and/or promotional in the form of vehicles in diecast, resin or other materials...

Well, that’s not the case with Shelby, this company actually created the Shelby Collectibles initiative and it was operating between 2004 and 2012 - 2013; currently there is a Shelby Store (only online) managed directly by Shelby American, Inc., as well as Team Shelby, both initiatives developed to generate a stronger fan base for the brand, but Shelby Collectibles itself is already out of business...

This fact explains why finding diecast products by the latter is not so easy, anyway Shelby Collectibles didn’t produce millions of units of each model or series, but rather in average between 10,000 and 15,000 units, for some series way less than that: well, that’s appealing in the eyes of a collector, because their scarcity is not artificial, but what’s even more important is that Shelby Collectibles was faithful to its philosophy of making "collectible quality die cast vehicles at affordable pricing".

When you find as collector a brand of collectibles whose reputation was not build through marketing campaigns and misleading advertising, you truly find something valuable for the hobby; unfortunately, at the time when Shelby Collectibles (SC) was in operation, the collectors’ community was not as consolidated as in more recent times, but we definitely need more brands like SC.

I got both samples of the 1968 Ford Shelby Mustang Cobra GT500 through the secondary market, with the help of a friend of mine, fellow collector and importer / private seller, pretty much 8 years ago; the first one introduced in the photoshoot is part of a 10-Cars Collector’s Box Set, while the second one came in individual card.

This brand of the Premium category offers models with full diecast construction, opening hood (with detailed engine bay) and doors, plastic inserts for the headlights, front grille and bumper, as well as rear bumper, that includes the tail lights and obviously my guests are no exception; the proportions were managed very well as you expect in this category and there are nice details everywhere.

The paints jobs were made in off-white (Wimbledon White) and bright red with glossy finishing, complemented by very prolix and realistic decorations with tampos and/or decals, including a pair of racing stripes in blue / red and white respectively, several emblems and moldings all around including: windows moldings and wipers, front grille, signal and fog lights, hood pins, G.T. 500 emblems of the rocker panels, doors moldings, gas cap; the chassis received silver paint with metal flake finishing and a detail I forgot to mention in previous reviews: there is a serial number printed on the chassis, that adds a lot of authenticity and exclusivity to the product.

The interiors were worked in black, very well detailed; the multipart wheels feature a beautiful reproduction of the actual Shelby Aluminum 10 Spoke rims design in chrome, styled synthetic rubber tires and they were made in China...

Ezk 29:12-16 "And I will make the land of Egypt desolate in the midst of the countries that are desolate, and her cities among the cities that are laid waste shall be desolate forty years: and I will scatter the Egyptians among the nations, and will disperse them through the countries. Yet thus saith the LORD GOD; at the end of forty years will I gather the Egyptians from the people whither they were scattered: And I will bring again the captivity of Egypt, and will cause them to return into the land of Pathros, into the land of their habitation; and they shall be there a base kingdom. It shall be the basest of the kingdoms; neither shall it exalt itself any more above the nations: for I will diminish them, that they shall no more rule over the nations. And it shall be no more the confidence of the house of Israel, which bringeth their iniquity to remembrance, when they shall look after them: but they shall know that I am the LORD GOD."

1966 Ford Shelby (Mustang) GT350 - Compact 2-Door Fastback Coupe Pony Car / Muscle Car / Sports Car 2010 Carroll Shelby’s Cars Box Set Series - Limited Edition 1 of 5,000 Diecast Scale 1:64 by Shelby Collectibles

Mustangs and Cobras don’t get along too well in normal conditions, I mean, Cobras actually don’t get along too well with anything else, just because the last thing you want is a Cobra hissing close to you, unless we are talking about the automotive world...

Just imagine the strength and agility of an untamed horse, the Mustang, one that was once domesticated, but now roam free, joined to the fierceness and lethality of the Cobra: sounds like a great blend and a serious threat too...

I don’t know if this kind of ideas roamed around the heads of those involved in this joint-venture between Ford and Shelby, perhaps, perhaps not, but what I do know for sure is that these people wanted to "stamp" a much more burly (or rather badass) character in a model that had room for novel developments and improvements.

You can feel that they wanted to create a sort of "not docile" car and reading about the experiences from owners, that was precisely what they got, particularly during the first two years of this fruitful relationship, between a horse and a snake, so to say...

My guest for this publication is the second rendition of a car that stir passions among car buffs and car collectors alike: the 1966 Ford Shelby (Mustang) GT350, a Compact 2-Door Fastback Coupe Pony Car / Muscle Car / Sports Car, one that followed the success of its ’65 brother, with some modifications.

If we are talking about key years for the Mustang, 1965 and 1966 definitely qualify in that sense, because the Pony Car essence was thoroughly respected and the car had a quite favorable power / weight ratio, probably even better than in later years.

While its 289 cubic inches engine was not nearly as powerful as the 427 cubic inches mammoth introduced for 1967, its size and weight more than compensate this "weakness", that’s why the ’66 model was used as basis, along with the ’65, for the most sought after GT350R racing cars (of which you can read here and it was also included in the photoshoot).

However, for 1966, the GT350 received fold-down backseats, automatic transmission (option), rear side window in plexiglass, unlike the regular Mustang GT with glass window (instead of the louver of the ’65 model), functional rear quarter panels scoops, Cobra tachometer, deluxe wood rimmed steering wheel and other amenities, not too many so the car could keep most of its brutality.

Not many of these GT350 were made actually, figures are the following: 1,368 GT350; 1,001 GT350H (Hertz models); 4 GT350 Dragsters; 4 GT350 convertible and 11 GT350S (Supercharged by Paxton), making a total of 2,388 units.

Then finding one of them in pristine and original condition is quite difficult and the prices are currently starting barely below US$100,000 so maybe it’s not precisely the affordable sports car for the middle class it was once, not anymore...

Being at the right time, in the right place, with the right people, I couldn’t highlight enough how important are these three factors for collectors; most people, including simple buyers, would say that it’s just a matter of luck, but luck doesn’t have anything to do with that, it’s rather a matter of intuition and that’s something you only develop through knowledge and experience...

When these three factors come together, as collector you are not guessing, you’re considering the odds and then making a conscious decision.

When I found the set to which belongs my guest for this review, I was at the right time: I already knew about Shelby Collectibles because I had the chance to get a few models by this brand and I was pleasantly surprised by the consistent quality of its products, 2012 was still a good moment to get them at affordable prices, because for 2013, the diecast company was already out of business.

I was also at the right place, with the right people: I got this set in the secondary market, with the help of a friend of mine, fellow collector and importer, a little more than 8 years ago, he has a specialized collectibles and toy store, here in my hometown and he had one of these sets available for sale when I went to visit him.

I have to admit that there are not many local stores with the assortment of products he manages to offer, at affordable prices on top of that and he has helped me to get many items for my collection, which are virtually impossible to get here.

Again, some people could say that this is exactly what many stores out there offer, but one thing is to trust a nice but maybe fake slogan of a store you don’t know and other pretty different to know by experience that you can get something for your collection, at a reasonable price, time and time again, through someone honest, responsible, who advises you and with whom you can share knowledge, because he or she are collectors as well...

Scammers, hoarders / scalpers, dishonest sellers they abound, it takes some time, knowledge and intuition to identify that kind of people and also to find trustworthy people: if you know what you’re looking for, there is no place for random, that’s why it has nothing to do with luck, right?...

Just like other products of Shelby Collectibles, a brand of the Premium category, this model offers full diecast construction, opening hood (with detailed engine bay) and doors, plastic inserts for the headlights, front grille and bumper, as well as rear bumper, that includes the tail lights, the proportion is correct and the level of detail quite satisfying.

The paint job was made in a very unusual color: dark red, almost burgundy, which is different to one of the actual factory options for the ’66 GT350, Candyapple Red, but I guess Shelby can play a little bit with their own products, it’s complemented by a decoration with tampos and/or decals, including a pair of racing stripes that run through the body in Guardsman Blue and Wimbledon White, the windows moldings and wipers, front grille and signal lights, hood pins, G.T. 350 emblems of the rocker panels, doors moldings, tail lights and gas cap; the chassis received silver paint with metal flake finishing and the assembling was made with screws instead of rivets.

The interiors were worked in black, nicely detailed as always; the multipart wheels feature the a very accurate reproduction of the actual Shelby Aluminum 10 Spoke rims design in chrome, styled rubber tires and it was made in China...

Ezk 23:25-30 "And I will set my jealousy against thee, and they shall deal furiously with thee: they shall take away thy nose and thine ears; and thy remnant shall fall by the sword: they shall take thy sons and thy daughters; and thy residue shall be devoured by the fire. They shall also strip thee out of thy clothes, and take away thy fair jewels. Thus will I make thy lewdness to cease from thee, and thy whoredom brought from the land of Egypt: so that thou shalt not lift up thine eyes unto them, nor remember Egypt any more. For thus saith the LORD GOD: behold, I will deliver thee into the hand of them whom thou hatest, into the hand of them from whom thy mind is alienated: of Egypt: so that thou shalt not lift up thine eyes unto them, nor remember Egypt any more. And they shall deal with thee hatefully, and shall take away all thy labor, and shall leave thee naked and bare: and the nakedness of thy whoredoms shall be discovered, both thy lewdness and thy whoredoms. I will do these things unto thee, because thou hast gone a whoring after the heathen, and because thou art polluted with their idols."

1965 Ford Shelby Mustang GT350R - Compact 2-Door Fastback Coupe Pony Car / Muscle Car / Racing - Rallye Car 2010 Carroll Shelby’s Cars Box Set Series - Limited Edition 1 of 5,000 Diecast Scale 1:64 by Shelby Collectibles

The Ford Mustang already owns a place in the "hall of fame" of the automotive products that have stood the test of time, surviving its competitors, beyond the fact that it was part of the nominees for the Car of the Century, an award which included some of the most influential vehicles ever created at that time...

Even its most trenchant detractors have to admit it: the Mustang marked a before and after in the market of sports cars for the United States, it’s an automotive milestone worldwide and I’m not just talking about its extraordinary initial sales figures, which are in the end only numbers...

I’m talking about redefining what American people expected from a compact sports car, because this kind of vehicles has existed way before the Mustang was released and there were numerous options with similar profile, mainly imported models, but nothing like the most prominent Pony Car (not the first one, actually the Plymouth Barracuda has that privilege).

However, what people knew and loved about the Mustang, particularly for its first generation, was not a proper point of reference for what Ford, in association with Shelby American, created for competition in the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA), more precisely in the B Production Category Racing or BP Class.

My guest for this publication is precisely one of the first renditions of this icon: the 1965 Ford Shelby Mustang GT350R, a Compact 2-Door Fastback Coupe Pony Car / Muscle Car / Racing - Rallye Car, that achieved the legendary status virtually since its first test race.

While the regular Mustang of the first generation was a stylish and civilized sports car, aimed at the American consumer, one who likes powerful yet comfortable cars (at least in most cases), offering all the amenities and certain touches of luxury available during the 60s, albeit the car looks like something more proper for the restful 50s, the Shelby Mustang GT350R is a pretty different story...

Because, well, it’s a purebred racing car, a threatening beast far away from the educated boy with good manners represented by the original Mustang: in fact, all the 1965 GT350R started as a 1965 (eventually 1966) Ford Mustang Fastback K-Code, endowed with a 289 cu in, 4.7 L, Windsor HiPo V8 engine, rated at 271 hp, modified to produce up to 360 hp, but the modifications hardly end there and the car externally resembles its street counterpart, only in the way that a stock racing car of the 60s could.

Being and old school racer, reducing weight was a must, carbon fiber or exotic compound materials were not an option to consider, so the Stang was stripped to the bone: no rear seat, rear side windows were sealed (the first 15 had no rear or side windows at all), extensive use of plexiglass, no heater, no defroster, no insulation or sound deadening, no front or rear bumpers, competition grade fiberglass seats, ultra spartan instruments panel.

But also some stuff were added like: increased oil capacity, wider wheels with high-speed tires, reengineered front suspension and a heavy duty one at the rear, limited-slip differential, Warner T-10 4-speed gearbox, tachometer and oil pressure gauges, 4-points rollbar at the rear, Kelsey Hayes front ventilated disks and heavy duty metallic lined drums in back, bigger gas tank, water radiator and oil cooler for the differential.

The GT350R is a very rare sight, with only 34 made is not precisely a car for the masses and let’s say that the prices of an original one, above US$1,000,000 (in case an owner wants to sell one of them, which is very unlikely) don’t make things easier, but you don’t expect less from a legend of racing...

Shelby Collectibles is another brand that was part of the boom in the segment of diecast collectibles during the first decade of the present century, which in turn was a follow up of another boom during the 90s of the last century; I mean, those were pretty much 20 years (1990-2010) when the diecast industry took a huge leap to offer products considerably better suited to adult collectors, than the toy cars manufactured previously...

But you already know, some people out there are promoting the idea that "currently we’re experiencing the best time to collect models in 1:64 scale", which is not entirely true, because:

1. There were great brands manufacturing excellent products in 1:64 scale or around, before the current boom, then the best time to collect 1:64 scale models (or around) started over 20 years ago actually and...

2. Without the previous booms the current one wouldn’t take place; this kind of changes or evolutions require collectors' feedback to the industry and, in turn, that the latter has the technological resources and specialized labor to produce more realistic and accurate models, which takes time (you always have to analyze any phenomenon retrospectively in order to truly understand it: history matters)...

Now, while toy cars (mainly the older ones) are still appreciated among some seasoned collectors, there was a consistent awareness among them of the need of much more realistic, detailed and accurate models, manufactured with much better quality standards, because they were ready to pay values reasonably higher for that kind of products and some companies in this segment took careful note of this.

I want to stress that these booms I’m mentioning wouldn’t be possible without the leadership and guidance of collectors: make no mistake, buyers don’t promote that kind of changes, they just buy whatever the market has to offer, because, well, the purchase in itself is a goal for them, their placebo, they don't question whether a product could be better or not and being followers (not leaders) is one of the main traits of their role / profile.

Of course, we should bear in mind that nowadays there are several sponsored brand promoters out there, posing as collectors, who want to perniciously introduce trends and changes to the market and the guild of collectionism, but there is at least one easy way to know the difference between them and us: collectors and hype don’t get along, if someone generates hype, this someone wants to sell you stuff and that’s what brands promoters do, you cannot put collectors and hype in the same "bag", because one of them would be out of place, if you know what I mean...

There are not so many renditions in 1:64 scale or around of this legend of racing, I mean, the 1965 Ford Shelby Mustang GT350R, as you might think; as far as I know, only M2 Machines and Greenlight have made adult collectibles based on this model (I’m not counting toy cars), but my guest, made by Shelby Collectibles, is the best of them as a whole.

It belongs to the 2010 Carroll Shelby’s Cars Box Set Series, consisting of 10 cars, including models made exclusively by Shelby American and others that represent collaborations between Ford and Shelby; these sets were made in a Limited Edition of 5,000 units and I got one of them in the secondary market, with the help of a friend of mine, fellow collector and importer, 8 years ago or so, when products by this brand were still available (a bit less than one year later, the brand was out of business).

This model of the Premium category offers full diecast construction, opening hood and doors, plastic inserts for the front lights and it’s well proportioned, maybe the level of detail could be better, but I like very much what I see.

The paint job reproduces very nicely the original color scheme of the actual car: Wimbledon White (a very light cream color) with a pair of racing stripes that run through the body in Guardsman Blue (a metallic deep blue), complemented by tampos and/or decals for the windshield moldings and wipers, front grille and signal lights, racing hood pins, G.T. 350 emblems of the rocker panels, the "meatball" #45, doors moldings, tail lights and obviously, the detailed engine under the hood; the chassis received silver paint with metal flake finishing and the assembling was made with screws instead of rivets (so, there is place for further customizations).

The interiors were worked in black and include the rollbar at the rear, with a great level of detail; the multipart wheels feature a very accurate reproduction of the actual cast-magnesium center Torq Thrust rims design in gunmetal, with chrome lip, styled rubber tires and it was made in China...

Ezk 22:17-22 "And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying: son of man, the house of Israel is to me become dross: all they are brass, and tin, and iron, and lead, in the midst of the furnace; they are even the dross of silver. Therefore thus saith the LORD GOD: because ye are all become dross, behold, therefore I will gather you into the midst of Jerusalem. As they gather silver, and brass, and iron, and lead, and tin, into the midst of the furnace, to blow the fire upon it, to melt it; so will I gather you in mine anger and in my fury, and I will leave you there, and melt you. Yea, I will gather you, and blow upon you in the fire of my wrath, and ye shall be melted in the midst thereof. As silver is melted in the midst of the furnace, so shall ye be melted in the midst thereof; and ye shall know that I the LORD have poured out my fury upon you."
