1982 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am Customized - K.I.T.T. (Knight Rider TV Series Car) - Compact 2-Doors 2+2 Hatchback Coupe Muscle Car / Pony Car / Sports Car - 2013 Retro Entertainment Series Mix 1 4/5 Diecast Scale 1:65 by Hot Wheels

It seems that the premises on which are based some works of fiction made for the cinema, as TV shows or as plays, don’t have to be absolutely reasonable, feasible or credible from the beginning, in order to get the approval of the producers, sponsors and other people involved in giving green light to this kind of projects...

I don’t mean that these audiovisual products are just a parade of farfetched, wacky ideas, put on the screen, NO; there are some projects, whether old or recent, which display a dose of resemblance to reality, feasibility, thinking ahead of their time, credibility so high, that result brilliant, challenging and disturbing at the same time...

However, more than feasibility or credibility, there is something these productions have to be and that’s a must in all cases: entertaining, they must "connect" with people in such a strong way, that people forget about reality for a while and become part of these fictional worlds, keeping themselves entertained, distracted...

The latter statement sounds worrisome if you take time to think about it, to ponder on its implications, I know, but the effect of these audiovisual products in the social and individual psique is undeniable: it’s a power that can be used for better or for worse, the thing is that in practice it’s seldom used for good.

We should be aware that media, entertainment and the "popular culture" they manufacture, are means to mold and manipulate society, ideological opium and they are so influential that can make people consider good what’s evil and evil what’s good, truth what’s lie and lie what’s truth: that’s a lot of power, used in a very despicable way...

Now, when it comes to TV shows that willingly ignore some rules of reasonability, feasibility and/or plausibility, I think that Knight Rider, a series in the genres of action, crime, drama and science fiction (more fiction than science, actually), created by Glen A. Larson and originally aired between 1982 and 1986 by NBC, somehow fits the bill.

The main character is a car (here we go), named Knight Industries Two Thousand or K.I.T.T., crammed with all kinds of gadgetry and A.I. (Artificial Intelligence) on top of that, which enable it ("him"), with the timely help of Michael Knight (formerly known as Michael Arthur Long, a Las Vegas police detective, who was shot in the face and returned to the duty with a new identity), to fight crime in behalf of the Foundation for Law and Government (FLAG).

This vehicle / robotized crime fighter, is largely based on a 1982 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am (customized for the TV Series, of course), a Compact 2-Doors 2+2 Hatchback Coupe Muscle Car / Pony Car / Sports Car, in black suit, for a sneaky and kinda menacing appearance, it’s pretty much like a "vigilante" on wheels with a human partner, that came to save the day...

And since I like to read between the lines very often, I wonder if people notice one of the premises, perhaps the main one, posed by Knight Rider: a machine with artificial intelligence and state-of-the-art technology that upholds the rule of law very efficiently, protects human beings and represents the power of government, through a private corporation (FLAG, remember?) to do the right thing...

That’s a quite comforting and alluring idea, if you ask me, but too naive, lacking in credibility, because in the real life virtually all technologies, including artificial intelligence and biotechnologies, are developed in part because of their potential to generate ungodly amounts of money, which is not even the greatest issue.

After all, making much more money than what you can spend in your whole life is vanity, but vanity usually goes accompanied by greed and the latter in particular is a bottomless pit, it’s never satisfied, as the Bible states: "For the love of money is the root of all evil" (1 Timothy 6:10)...

Neither technologies are the issue in themselves, because they are means to achieve something else, as well as money: the real issue are the individuals who finance these developments, who don’t mind to pour huge amounts of ill-gotten money wherever they find potential...

Just because these individuals are absolutely unscrupulous, ruthless and for them money means very little if it cannot be transformed into power to rule without ethical, moral or legal limitations; that’s why these means (money, technology, etc.) have been used against population systematically, as tools of control, intimidation, manipulation and/or destruction, through governments run by private interests, like corporations with the facade of public entities...

Do you think that’s a handful of wild ideas?, check out history, particularly during the last century and find out for yourself how feasible in practice are the ideas about control, manipulation of large populations, even complete nations...

Sounds like a conspiracy?, probably because that’s exactly what it is; but you can still choose to believe that obscenely expensive technological developments are created selflessly, for the sake of humanity and put in the hands of population for free, either through extremely upright and compassionate private corporations or by governments made up of altruistic, irreproachable politicians...

The only problem is that the latter belief doesn’t match reality, is just fiction, like the vast majority of beliefs promoted by "popular culture", including TV Series like Knight Rider, in a way that seems to be mere entertainment and that’s precisely its greatest danger, that’s why it catches most people off guard, because most people do not realize it’s in fact programming, conditioning of the human will, whose results are seen in the mid and long term...

As collector and professional graphic designer, I like to explore fictional worlds in a regular basis, but it doesn’t mean that I have severed my link with reality and it’s curious how many people think that collectors are just a bunch of alienated guys and gals: nothing could be farther from the truth...

My usual readers know regarding my blog that I like to keep it real, to keep it honest and even when I give my imagination free rein, there is always a moment when I make the connection with reality.

This hobby can go way beyond mercantilist babblings, it’s in fact a particular way to share interesting, relevant knowledge and to ponder what’s happening around us: collectibles and life have more links than what we dare to admit...

The guest I’m introducing today belongs to the Retro Entertainment Series, one of the several targets for hoarders / scalpers, just because anything related with "popular culture" and entertainment has a particular interest for many buyers and some collectors, it’s a source of easy money and that’s why I’m very cautious when I want to get one of these items: a fair price is always a must for me.

I got this toy car version of the K.I.T.T., in the secondary market, with the help of a friend of mine, fellow collector and importer, pretty much 8 years ago, soon after it was originally released, at a price that was in the limit of what I considered reasonable at that moment.

The model was developed by Brendon Vetuskey, a designer who became part of the Hot Wheels team in 2007, so I consider him a "member" of the new school; it has had 7 iterations, not including the K.A.R.R. version, for lines in the Regular, Adult and Deluxe categories.

The "Deluxe" version nonetheless, made for the San Diego Comic Convention (SDCC), is virtually the same Adult version "glorified", inside a display base with sound effects in turn inside a fancy box, but at a ridiculously higher price, so much that you have to be a moron to pay what’s being asked for this item: there is simply no proportionality between what you pay and what you get in return, the "exclusivity" of being sold at a convention will never really justify such outlandish prices, for someone who really knows what’s buying...

There is also a another version in a smaller scale (around 1:68) made for the Chara Wheels line released for the Japanese market exclusively, the level of detail for both is pretty much the same and each one has its pros and cons regarding their counterpart, but they are both toy cars.

I really would like to see a proper scale replica in 1:64 made by GreenLight, Auto World, Johnny Lightning or even Malibu International Ltd. (if only the latter weren’t out of business), but I’m settling with this one.

Yet, there have been other versions of this vehicle in the form of toys, scale replicas, radio control vehicles or model kits, made by: Kenner, Jada, Matchbox, Corgi, Kidco, Tomica Premium Unlimited, Minc Yin Toys, LJN, Diamond Select (also for its Minimates line), Joy Ride, ERTL, MPC, Aoshima, Matsuchiro, in scales like 1:43, 1:32, 1:28, 1:25, 1:24, 1:18 and 1:15.

It has diecast body and chassis, the level of detail is very good for a toy car; the paint job was made in black with glossy finishing, that includes the chassis, complemented by a very minimalistic decoration with tampos and/or decals in orange, red, yellow and blue, which includes the red scanner / sensor (cylon) light, signal lights and rear plate.

The interiors in black have a decent level of detail and they were painted in beige, but also received digital inkjet printing for details in the dashboard, while the windows are smoked and include the T-Top; the multipart wheels are Real Riders featuring Moon Disk rims design in silver with digital inkjet printing to simulate the hubcaps (an ugly and cheaper finishing, as you can expect from Hot Wheels), styled synthetic rubber tires and it was made in Malaysia...

Act 19:17-21 "And this was known to all the Jews and Greeks also dwelling at Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the LORD JESUS was magnified. And many that believed came, and confessed, and showed their deeds. Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver. After these things were ended, Paul purposed in the spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying: After I have been there, I must also see Rome."

I heard in a TV program about different topics related with the cars scene in Brazil, 2 years ago or something like that, a statement during an interview that pretty much claimed the following: "people in United States like speed and power, comfortable cars but with power and they were too expensive for the average Mexican-American"...

The interviewees were introducing the topic of how the Lowrider culture started in the country of the star-spangled flag and I can almost see the bewilderment face in readers of this publication, because I’m not featuring this time something related with this aspect of the automotive world and well, it’s kind of weird to hear Brazilian people talking about an important facet of the Mexican-American culture...

There will be time to explore more of the Lowrider world in future reviews, if GOD allows, a very interesting matter indeed for anyone who like to see society through the lens of cars, but what drew my attention regarding the first statement mentioned was the taste for comfortable, fast and powerful (also I would add big) cars among people from North America.

Those are traits that people look for worldwide, but a singularity of the car culture in United States is that they love big cars, the bigger, the better, because in other regions of the world, midsize, compact or even subcompact cars are preferred by far (including, of course, my homeland: Colombia, South America).

My guests for this publication, that include: the 1965 Pontiac (Tempest LeMans) GTO Hardtop Coupe, an Intermediate 2-Door Hardtop Coupe Muscle Car, the 1967 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396 Sport Coupe, a Midsize 2-Door Hardtop Coupe Muscle Car and the 1970 Pontiac GTO 400 Ram Air IV Convertible, an Intermediate 2-Door Convertible Muscle Car / Sports Car, are faithful examples of the preferences in North America regarding cars.

These vehicles represent some of the typical choices of consumers in that market during the 60s, no doubt comfort is one of their most noticeable characteristics, they look like family cars, except by the GTO Convertible, because its overall shape tends to be more sporty, but they can accommodate between 4 and 5 passengers without any issue, so they are roomy.

Most of their comfort lies precisely in its good size, but these cars are fast as well, because they have a good dose of power, they are Muscle Cars and particularly in the case of the ’65 GTO and the ’67 Chevelle SS 396, a touch of elegance is added to the mix: is the sum of these traits, so typical of the Northamerican market, what makes these vehicles so appealing for many car lovers, whether they are from the new or the old school and I’m one of them...

Once I began to explore toy cars made by Hot Wheels and my usual readers know that I didn’t grow up with the brand of the flaming logo, my encounter with HW was belated, in fact as adult collector, my main focus was on Muscle Cars and that’s precisely one its strengths so let’s say that I got a good amount of them, a bit too much now that I think about it, but I don’t regret it...

By 2012, when I started my foray in the world of diecast models of vehicles, preceded by other kind of collectibles, of course, Hot Wheels still had the kind of appeal that you could expect as adult collector from a toy cars manufacturer, I mean, a decent dose of diecast (zamac), plastic chassis with chrome finishing in a regular basis, a good dose of tampos and/or decals, decent quality control and those factors were what encouraged me to buy several items by that brand...

Those were good times to do so and the prices were reasonable, nowadays, on the other hand, those factors have changed quite a bit, that’s why no more items by Hot Wheels have been added to my collection since 2018, but I still have a wide inventory unpublished, so every now and then there will be these "reloaded" reviews...

I got all my guests for the present publication through the secondary market, with the help of friend of mine, fellow collector and importer / private seller, pretty much 9 years ago; 2 car brands, 3 models and 3 designers (Brendon Vetuskey, Jun Imai and Larry Wood) are represented in this handful of toy cars: pretty suitable since I love variety!...

The ’65 Pontiac GTO, a work by Wood, was introduced in 2004, it’s still in force and it has had at least 40 iterations, including variations, for lines in the Regular and Adult categories; the ’67 Chevelle SS 396, a work by Vetuskey, was introduced in 2010, it’s still in force and it has had at least 27 iterations, including variations, all for the Regular category (Mainline); the ’70 Pontiac GTO (Convertible), a work by Imai, was introduced in 2008, it has had at least 17 iterations, including variations, most of them for the Regular category (only 4 for the Adult category) and it was seemingly discontinued in 2017.

All these models offer diecast body and plastic chassis, with chrome finishing for all except one in black, the overall level of detail as well as the dose of diecast is decent in all cases; the paint jobs were made in champagne with metallic finishing, electric blue / cyan with glossy finishing, golden with Metalflake finishing, medium blue with metallic finishing and plain black with glossy finishing respectively.

These paint jobs are complemented by decorations of different styles made with tampos and/or decals; for the two ’65 Pontiac GTO there are crab claw flames, with different patterns on the side panels, made in black / dark gray and black / fluorescent orange; for the ’67 Chevelle SS 396, the decoration is stock, very sober and includes the side panels and the hood; finally for the ’70 Pontiac GTO Convertible, we have one very stock, on the side panels, including front lights and rear bumper, finally the other is very custom with crab claw flames, on the side panels and the hood, in white, yellow, red and cyan blue, the most radical of the group.

The interiors are pretty basic, they were worked in black, white, beige, black and orange respectively, while the windows are clear, orange tinted and clear again for the last three models; all models offer plastic wheels featuring 5 Spokes rims design (this was not intentional, by the way) in chrome, orange chrome, two more in chrome and the last one in white respectively, finally all of them were made in Malaysia...

Act 17:29-34 "Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of GOD, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device. And the times of this ignorance GOD winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent: Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead. And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked: and others said, we will hear thee again of this matter. So Paul departed from among them. Howbeit certain men cleaved unto him, and believed: among the which was Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them."
