1997 Dodge (Copperhead) Concept - Compact 2-Door / 2-Seater Roadster / Convertible - Sports Car - Concept Car (Dodge Concept) - Collector 164 - 2003 Pride Rides Series (Mainline) 6/10 Diecast Scale 1:61 by Hot Wheels

English version
Do you have the perception that somehow, despite the fact Chrysler is, or rather used to be, one of the largest conglomerates of car manufacturers in United States, its products feel kind of "out of place" in the North American market, mostly because of their distictive design?...

If that’s the case, then you’re not alone, in fact, I posed this idea in a previous publication, of which you can read here; I mean, the idea that brands like Dodge, once part of Chrysler and now part of Stellantis, create vehicles that do not follow the trends set by other North American companies in this segment, like General Motors or Ford...

And I’m convinced that Dodge instills this distinctive character in its concept cars as well; you expect them to be in car dealers right away, just because of their revolutionary design, their witty ergonomics, their incredible efficiency in the use of energy or anything you find remarkable.

However, just like happens with mosts concept vehicles: if they are pointing a bit too much in the right direction as automotive developments or become precisely what people need and represent a true improvement as means of transportation, they will remain as mere lures...

Anyway, in the few cases when they reach production, they receive so many modifications "in order to save costs" or the rest of fake excuses this industry discloses to keep the status quo, in which they are involved, that these projects end as a shell of the original idea.

Now, I don’t mean that concept cars are the "embodiment of perfection in automotive matters", just remember, they are also part of the status quo and the latter predates automotive industry by centuries, so NO, that’s not the case, but at least they are interesting design exercises.

I’m featuring for this review, yeah, you got it, one of these automotive experiments: the 1997 Dodge (Copperhead) Concept, a Compact 2-Door / 2-Seater Roadster / Convertible - Sports Car - Concept Car, introduced for the North American International Auto Show, in Detroit, Michigan, that same year.

During the 90s, Dodge was experiencing a sort of revival, after the (pre-manufactured) hecatomb that was the 70s and 80s for the automotive industry; this brand definitely wanted consumers to know about its "apogee", so an energetic marketing campaign, along with a parade of new models and concepts were developed for that purpose.

The Dodge Copperhead Concept (later changed to simply Dodge Concept, due to a legal issue with the ownership rights for the name "Copperhead") was part of these developments and it was created, apparently, with the premise of being a smaller, more affordable and tamed version of the outrageous Dodge Viper.

But I think this concept has a personality of its own, after all, the inspiration for the Copperhead had a very different performance profile: not the roaring Cobra, but the elegant and more relaxed Austin Healey 3000, and it shows.

To be honest, I find more appealing the overall styling developed for the Copperhead, with its sensual curves, than the brutal, kind of rough styling of the Viper: it feels cohesive, albeit I think, as designer, that the front and the rear were not so well resolved, they feel detached, like they were a last minute decision and it shows too...

Yet, with certain shortcomings in terms of styling and the fact that it never reached production, because, among other factors, by that time, Chrysler and Daimler-Mercedes partnered in a sort of merger and the latter already had a car with a similar profile: the SLK; as a whole, I like very much this Copperhead and that’s why I got one of them in the form of toy car...

By the way, my guest is another addition to the series of reviews I titled "the old good times of Hot Wheels, a brand that used to make good toy cars", of which you can read more here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here and here...

I got it through the secondary market, as most of the toy cars and scale replicas in my collection, with the help of a friend of mine, fellow collector and importer / private seller, around 12 years ago and if there is something to highlight here is that Hot Wheels had the good sense to include it in its catalog.

The due credit has to be for the design team at the blue brand of Mattel, otherwise, this kind of concept cars would never be considered for production, just like their actual counterparts and Phil Riehlman was behind this reproduction as toy car.

This Copperhead debuted for 1998 in the First Editions Series, part of the Mainline; it had at least 12 iterations, including variations, all for Series in the Regular category and it was discontinued in 2009.

Phil’s work on this product is very good, there is an appropriate resemblance with the actual vehicle; my guest belongs to the 2003 Pride Rides Series and it was the last iteration featuring body and chassis in diecast, because for 2008, when it was reintroduced, the chassis was changed to plastic, making the model way less attractive as a whole.

It offers a good level of detail all around, including the chassis, which is very welcome; the paint job was made in burnt orange with metallic finishing, very similar to the one used in the actual car and more accurate than the paint job used for the First Edition Series, which usually try to mimic more closely its real counterpart, albeit that was not the case here.

It was complemented by a very flashy and aggressive decoration, with tampos in white and golden, on virtually all the panels of the body, something you hardly find in products from the Mainline, but there you have it and that’s the kind of aspects that make these older items better than the recent ones.

Nonetheless, the interiors are a different story, I mean, they were worked in beige, with a decent level of detail, exception made with the steering wheel, a lump in the dashboard, but even worse are the two huge holes in front of the seats, it detracts a lot from the appareance.

The plastic wheels feature Phil Riehlman 5 Spokes rims design in golden chrome, for me, one of the best available, with bigger wheels at the rear, which is not my favorite feature, but it’s not too awful either and finally, it was made in China...

Act 23:32-35 "On the morrow they left the horsemen to go with him, and returned to the castle: Who, when they came to Caesarea, and delivered the epistle to the governor, presented Paul also before him. And when the governor had read the letter, he asked of what province he was. And when he understood that he was of Cilicia; I will hear thee, said he, when thine accusers are also come. And he commanded him to be kept in Herod's judgment hall."

2000 - 2003 Opel Speedster - Subcompact 2-Door 2-Seater Coupe Targa / Roadster Sports Car - 2003 Matchbox Hero City Collection Series Release 2 (MB565) 1/5 Diecast Scale 1:56 by Matchbox

ENGLISH
When it comes to German car brands, only Audi, BMW, MAN, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Smart and Volkswagen have a place in the imaginarium of people here in my country, Colombia, South America and that’s because some of their products have been marketed or are currently sold through the local dealership network of each company...

Opel, on the other hand, which is another German car brand, is very little known here and that’s only because a local dealerships network, with 32 years of experience in the commercialization of vehicles of the FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) Group, currently known as Stellantis, has started to offer products very recently (since 2021) like the Crossland, Grandland X (both crossover SUVs) and the Vivara Cargo (an utilitarian mid-size box van)...

Otherwise, Opel would be absolutely ignored and it would be understandable: despite its current internationalization, this car brand has been consistently focused on the German and European markets for most of its existence, even when it was acquired by General Motors in 1929, 30 years after its first car was produced.

Curiously, a model produced originally in the 80s by Vauxhall, the British "sibling" company of Opel, was offered in the local market during the first decade of the present century, I’m talking about the Astra, but it was marketed as a Chevrolet model.

Nonetheless, my guest for this publication is a complete stranger in this side of the world and obviously in my homeland: the 2000 - 2003 Opel Speedster, a Subcompact 2-Door 2-Seater Coupe Targa / Roadster Sports Car, which certainly stirred up the waves in the European market.

Now, the Speedster was a very singular product for Opel, because although this brand has some remarkable participations in rally racing and touring cars racing, it was not known precisely as a developer of exhilarating sports cars, rather compact and mid-size family cars, for the mass market and the middle class were its main targets.

Somehow, the Speedster came to change that conventional image Opel projected as brand, at least for a short period this German manufacturer enjoyed a boost in its reputation with this handsome subcompact sports car, partially related with the Lotus Elise S2.

The Speedster has a stupendous design, with chiseled panels that give the model a very contemporary line, even today looks extremely good, as if it would have been designed yesterday, a timeless approach that you don’t see so often and the car had a very good performance, to match its beauty, yet apparently it didn’t sold too well, which is a blunder, later it was replaced by the more conventional and less appealing Opel GT in 2007, based on the Saturn Sky: the dream was over...

The period between 2000 and 2004, at least in the opinion of most people in the "mainstream" of this hobby, was disastrous for Matchbox as diecast toy cars manufacturer and up to a point it’s understandable: I’m talking about the Hero-City era and maybe that name will be familiar for some (those who know a little bit about the history of Matchbox), while for others will be like listening to Cantonese...

So as a brief recap: by that time, Matchbox was already part of Mattel’s acquisitions and some people, probably at the Marketing Department, thought or concluded based on some sort of market research, that it would be a "great idea" to give toy cars the shape of animals, insects and other objects, such strategy was called Hero-City...

It’s not that in Matchbox history there were no other "dark ages", when somehow this brand lost its way, trying to find new buyers or to boost sales, NO, but let’s say that with Hero-City the orange brand of Mattel hit a new low and the blunder-o-meter just exploded.

However, since I’m not part of the "mainstream" of this hobby, I take that statement with a pinch of salt, because looking carefully at that era as a whole, in context and being faithful to reality, the Hero-City era was actually a mixed bag of very good models on the one hand and very awful experiments trying to give toy cars another -absurd- approach on the other hand...

If GOD allows, there will be time to talk a little bit more about this initiative, but right now I will focus on my guest for this review, that as you could expect, belongs to the Hero-City era and "disastrous" is not precisely and adjective I would use to describe it.

I got it through the secondary market and as far as I can remember, the distribution of Matchbox in my homeland was very poor, to say the least, so the chances to get it through the primary market at the time of its original release would be virtually zero, I resorted to a friend of mine, fellow collector and importer / private seller, pretty much 5 years ago.

This is the debut of the model, for the 1-75 range, namely Regular category and this is the edition made for U.S.A.; it had at least 6 iterations, 3 of them for the Superfast Series, namely Adult category and it was seemingly discontinued in 2017.

The model is surprisingly good for a toy car, the mold was nicely worked and the details are neat, albeit there is a noticeable scratch on the drivers door that the paint just couldn’t cover; it offers diecast body and black plastic chassis, the dose of diecast is decent, but in a small item like this, a diecast chassis wouldn’t make Mattel go bankrupt...

The paint job was made in silver with Metalflake finishing, it only received black tampos for the air vents on the front trunk and the rear cover of the engine (this is a mid-engine sports car) and there additional tampos in black for a Matchbox logo at the rear and a number 6 on the driver’s door; I added painted details for the tail lights in metallic red.

This toy car offers smoked windshield, the interiors were worked in red and it’s a very nice combination with the body color; the plastic wheels feature 9 Y Spokes rims design in chrome, one that has been discontinued; finally, it was made in China...

Ezk 33:23-26 "Then the word of the LORD came unto me, saying: Son of man, they that inhabit those wastes of the land of Israel speak, saying: Abraham was one, and he inherited the land: but we are many; the land is given us for inheritance. Wherefore say unto them, thus saith the LORD GOD: Ye eat with the blood, and lift up your eyes toward your idols, and shed blood: and shall ye possess the land? Ye stand upon your sword, ye work abomination, and ye defile every one his neighbor's wife: and shall ye possess the land?"

1975 Volkswagen Super Beetle Convertible 1303 (Type 1) - Subcompact Car 2-Door 4-Seater Convertible / Cabriolet 2016 Classic Gold Collection Series Limited Edition - Release 1 - Version B - 3/6 Diecast Scale 1:63 by Johnny Lightning

ENGLISH
The Volkswagen Beetle is probably the only car ever produced, for a noticeably long time, that represents the concept of evolutionary design in the most faithful way and that in itself sets apart this product from others made by the manufacturer headquartered at Wolfsburg or even from any other car...

And speaking about evolution, did you know that the theory of evolution by Charles Darwin still remains a theory?, given that the efforts to "prove it" have failed miserably and it’s no wonder, since all the supposed evidence in its favor has turned out to be a complete fiasco, time and time again; yet, it’s still widely promoted to date in many "scientific" circles...

Well, nature or life will not fit necessarily the explanations that human beings try to give about them, specially when there is a hidden second intention, bias or agenda behind such explanations...

Being that way, something made by man probably can show this concept of evolution more properly, don’t you think so?...

And yeah, you can fully identify a Beetle without racking your brain: that’s because there is a conductive thread between the first Type 1 manufactured in 1938, at the Fallersleben, Germany plant, in a very low number, for civilian use, before the World War II started and the final Type 1, called "Última Edición" (Last Edition), manufactured in 2003, at the Puebla, Mexico plant.

That conductive thread was achieved precisely through design and while all parts of the Beetle have undergone changes, they were gradual and the essence or ethos of this car remained virtually unaltered for around 65 years: that’s quite a feat!...

My guest for this publication is a substantial revision of the Bug, an affectionate nickname for which this model is known in the United States: the 1975 Volkswagen Super Beetle Convertible 1303 (Type 1), a Subcompact Car 2-Door 4-Seater Convertible / Cabriolet.

After a huge success of the previous rendition of the Beetle during the 60s, the sales of this model were starting to plummet and that was a big burden for Volkswagen, since the Type 1 remained its star product and a proper replacement was still in the future.

Then a new Beetle was introduced (not to be mistaken with the 1997 New Beetle) and received the Super appellative for the market of United States.

The focus of the improvements made in the Beetle, in order to transform it in the Super, was in terms of luggage room, overall comfort and utility, but there were other improvements, including a larger and more powerful engine.

Apparently this extensive revision was necessary not only because of sales issues, but also because the competitors in this segment offered more even for less money and in a strategic move, the previous Beetle remained in production, with a lower price.

This model, as well as the several previous renditions have been very admired in my homeland, Colombia, South America, despite you don’t see too many of them on the streets and convertibles, like the one featured today, are rather a rarity.

Despite its production in important markets like U.S.A. and Europe only lasted around a decade, it’s a car you can still see and still receive love from their owners, which has to do a lot with its status as one of the most recognizable icons of automotive design worldwide...

I have stated in several publications of my blog that, according to my first hand experience, I mean, scrutinizing the products in my collection, available in the market, even collectibles from the Premium category have shortcomings, so there is no such thing as "perfect" or "flawless" items in this hobby...

I have to insist in this fact, because some brands, specially the largests and/or most popular, those supported by massive marketing apparatuses, that include of course brand promoters in social networks and blogs / vlogs, are very prone to lie about the "perfection of their products", just because their priority are sales and not so much to cater the demands of collectors, offering quality or being honest regarding their products...

Other brands truly focused on collectors, actually striving to offer high quality products, like Johnny Lightning, suffer sometimes of these shortcomings, but at least this company and those with a similar philosophy, are not trying to hide this fact, resorting to deceiving marketing campaigns...

Now, unlike toys and not-premium collectibles, that because of their nature are massively manufactured, in collectibles from the Premium category, that because of their nature are manufactured in low productions or limited editions, these shortcomings are not something frequent, systematic and widespread.

My guest for this review is a quite appealing product made by Johnny Lightning, one that I got obviously through the secondary market, with the help of a friend of mine, fellow collector, importer and private seller, pretty much 6 years ago.

But it has a shortcoming that couldn’t be noticed until you open the packaging to see it in the flesh, as it should be (well, unless you’re a packages collectors or a reseller, which is NOT my case)...

It belongs to the 2016 Classic Gold Collection Series, a Limited Edition, Release 1, Version B, the Series itself is a homage and continuation of the Gold Series, that was introduced by Johhny Lightning in 2003 and its last release was in 2008.

It’s worth mentioning that the new Classic Gold Collection Series is part of the lines offered after the revival of the brand in 2016.

The presentation for this Series was a clamshell featuring a nice card inside, printed in full color and an embossed effect for the Johnny Lightning logo in the design of the card.

The 1975 Volkswagen Super Beetle Convertible was introduced originally in 2006, for the Volkswagen Series II, Release 5, but unlike my guest for today, the roof was folded in those previous versions; the version with unfolded roof was introduced until 2008, for the Release 9 of the Series already mentioned.

My guest offers full diecast construction and it’s fairly detailed as can be expected with a product by Johnny Lightning; the paint job was made in yellow with glossy finishing, reproducing quite accurately one of the factory colors for the actual vehicle: Sunflower Yellow, it was complemented by full tampos and/or decals for front, signal, tail lights, plate, emblems and windows moldings, door handles, side running boards, part of the appliqués on the bumpers (which are quite difficult to apply).

The windshield was nicely worked, the unfolded roof obviously is a plastic insert in white, as well as the fairly detailed interiors; the multipart wheels selection is very classic and realistic, with Dog Dish rims design in chrome, albeit not one of the factory options, styled (synthetic) rubber tires and here is precisely where you can find the shortcoming.

The front and rear axles for the wheels (in the front axle is more noticeable) were not correctly positioned, then the stance is leaning to the left and this is annoying, but at least the rest of the model is excellent; finally, it’s included a trading card printed in full color with a picture of the actual car in front, a list of models included in the Serie on the back and it was made in China...

Ezk 33:17-22 "Yet the children of thy people say, The way of the LORD is not equal: but as for them, their way is not equal. When the righteous turneth from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, he shall even die thereby. But if the wicked turn from his wickedness, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall live thereby. Yet ye say, The way of the LORD is not equal. O ye house of Israel, I will judge you every one after his ways. And it came to pass in the twelfth year of our captivity, in the tenth month, in the fifth day of the month, that one that had escaped out of Jerusalem came unto me, saying, The city is smitten. Now the hand of the LORD was upon me in the evening, before he that was escaped came; and had opened my mouth, until he came to me in the morning; and my mouth was opened, and I was no more dumb."
