Among the several types of aircrafts in existence, there is one that remains for me the most fascinating of all and it’s the helicopter, in its variety of forms and uses; I think there are good reasons for my preference for that kind of aerial vehicle...

The concept itself of helicopter, which had a substantially different approach to the idea of flying posed by the "conventional" airplane, is something quite interesting: I mean, while an airplane is an aircraft planned and developed for horizontal flight, a helicopter is able to offer multidirectional flight (vertical, horizontal, lateral, forward, backward or remaining stationary in the air)...

In other words, helicopters offer a more "natural" or at least a more versatile and practical way of flying, than their counterparts in the form of airplanes and the only equivalent of the latter type of aircraft is the Harrier, a single-engine jump-jet fighter / bomber, developed by Hawker Siddeley Aviation, a British company.

Now, this versatility for flying came true thanks to a way more complex engineering for the structure, power and control of these aircraft, than the engineering used in airplanes: helicopters use basically one or more horizontal powered propellers or rotors, and one or more vertical rotors in the tail, in order to achieve this prowess of multidirectional flight.

The complexity in the engineering was reflected in a longer time of development for helicopters than for airplanes, while the first functional airplane was tested by the Wright brothers in 1903, the first functional helicopter was tested by Igor Sikorsky in 1939.

For this publication I’m introducing a pair of guests that represent helicopters with different characteristics: the 2004 Sikorsky S-92, a Twin-Engined Midsize Medium-Lift Multi-Role Utility / Transport Helicopter for Civil Operations, by Sikorsky Aircraft and the 1993 Robinson R44 Raven I, a Compact Single-Engined 4-Seat Medium-Lift Light Passengers Helicopter for Civil Operations, by Robinson Helicopter Company.

Both examples show how versatile can be a helicopter when it comes to transportation by air, whether we are talking about passengers, cargo or a combination, one of them is a big apparatus, while the other is rather small, but both are basically used for people transportation, as civilian or military vehicles.

The Sikorsky S-92 had its first test flight in 1998, it was developed from the Sikorsky S-70, it’s used primarily for offshore transportation of passengers and material to oil and gas rigs, also for search and rescue duties, it has capacity for 2 crew members and up to 19 passengers, with a range of 999 km.

The 1993 Robinson R44, on the other hand, had its first test flight in 1990, it was developed from the Robinson R22, a 2-seater helicopter, it’s a multipurpose passengers transportation, also used as trainer for helicopter flight, it has capacity for 1 crew member and 3 passengers, with a range of 643 km...

For this review, I got a sample of each helicopter in the form of toy vehicles, through the primary market, in a local retail store, pretty much 6 years ago; they are part of a box-set, a special version of the 5-pack, they belong to the 2014 Matchbox On a Mission / Mission Force: Police Series and you can read about the other helicopter by Majorette featured in this photoshoot here...

Unlike the conventional 5-packs, these box-sets include, along with models from Series of the Regular category (Mainline) of Matchbox, other models from the Skybusters line (airplanes, helicopters and other aircraft) and/or from the Real Working Rigs line (tanks, trucks, tractors and other kind of heavy duty vehicles), which usually feature moving / sliding parts and are larger that their Mainline counterparts...

Hence, the presentation for this line differs from that of the conventional 5-packs: it’s a bigger horizontal window box, instead of the vertical window box of the latter.

The Mission Force line was introduced by Matchbox in 2012 and discontinued in 2015, the reason for that was not precisely the lack of success of the line, but rather its good value for money: yeah, you heard that right, it was discontinued because it made Mattel lose some profit and the red giant tends to be "somewhat" greedy, if you ask me...

Both toy helicopters offer diecast fuselage and plastic base, in blue and black respectively, but the dose of diecast in each case is different: the Sikorsky S-92 is in the edge of being considered a plastcast, because part of the fuselage was made also in plastic and the Robinson R44 is definitely a plastcast, which is a pity, because it has better overall details in the molds than the Sikorsky.

The propellers or blades for both helicopters were made in plastic, black and red respectively; the paint job for the Sikorsky was made in royal blue with glossy finishing, complemented by tampos in white, light blue, red and black, on the side panels, while the paint job for the Robinson was made in black with glossy finishing, complemented by tampos in white, light blue, red, on the side panels.

The Sikorsky has no interiors, while these were worked in black for the Robinson, with a basic level of detail, the windows are red and blue tinted respectively; the plastic wheels for the Sikorsky feature Mini Skybusters design in black, while the Robinson features landing skids and both were made in Thailand...

Ezk 34:6-10 "My sheep wandered through all the mountains, and upon every high hill: yea, my flock was scattered upon all the face of the earth, and none did search or seek after them. Therefore, ye shepherds, hear the word of the LORD; As I live, saith the Lord GOD, surely because my flock became a prey, and my flock became meat to every beast of the field, because there was no shepherd, neither did my shepherds search for my flock, but the shepherds fed themselves, and fed not my flock; Therefore, O ye shepherds, hear the word of the LORD; Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against the shepherds; and I will require my flock at their hand, and cause them to cease from feeding the flock; neither shall the shepherds feed themselves any more; for I will deliver my flock from their mouth, that they may not be meat for them."

ENGLISH
It’s been a while since the first time I published an off-road vehicle developed as a concept / designer / fantasy / original / internally licensed toy car (of which you can read here), a little more than 8 years to be precise and I have to say that I have evolved, matured as person, but also as adult collector, although I’m still in the process...

This evolution is a logic result of the knowledge and experience you gain over time, it’s virtually impossible to remain the same because circumstances around you constantly affect every aspect of your life, including your hobbies of course and I’m pretty sure my blog reflects these changes very well...

While off-road vehicles not based on actual models are a topic I like to explore every now and then in my collection, as well as other kind of concept / designer / fantasy / original / internally licensed toy cars, my evolution as collector has made me change the perspective I have about them.

Long gone are the times when I let trends, marketing campaigns, brand promoters, sponsored influencers and even fellow collectors, to shape my vision about collectionism and collectibles: it took some time, but now I have my own informed opinion, I apply critical thinking to this hobby...

Precisely, the knowledge and experience have allowed me to perceive more clearly how the overall quality, the features offered, particularly the dose of diecast, also the dose of moving paert and/or opening features, have been plummeting in the products manufactured by Hot Wheels and Matchbox.

All these flaws have harmed substantially the reputation of these brands, despite their expensive, intensive and deceiving marketing campaigns, trying to show otherwise.

The diecast toy cars brands of Mattel have had some hits and quite a few misses regarding the products they have been offering, specially in recent times, older models whether they are concept / designer / fantasy / original / internally licensed or externally licensed are way better in all the aspects already mentioned, than the recent ones.

One of the main "excuses", if not the main one, to allegedly "justify" these increasingly less appealing and poorly developed products, is inflation...

Well, trying to "justify" an increase in price or as Mattel and other brands have implemented in their Regular / Basic lines: a substantial reduction in quality and features in their products over time, through inflation, is not only an absurdity, just because inflation is an economic aberration, an instrument of manipulation of the purchasing power, that must not exist in an equitable and reasonable economic system...

It’s pretty much and proportions saved obviously, like "justifying" homicides, just because statistical figures are getting higher and higher for this crime over time (!?)...

As I have mentioned in previous reviews, I no longer buy recent models by Matchbox and Hot Wheels since 2018, regardless the category of the lines considered (Regular, Adult, Deluxe and Premium, when it applies, because Matchbox no longer produce Premium products and if you want to know more about that, you can read here and here)...

The quality issues and other shortcomings in recent products, added to substantial and not justified increases in prices for Adult, Deluxe and Premium lines, are beyond what I, as adult collector, can accept.

My guests for this publication show both the hits and misses in Mattel diecast toy products I’m mentioning, they help me to explain visually and prove my point.

So marketing campaigns, brand promoters, sponsored influencers can claim that Hot Wheels and Matchbox are getting better over time, all they want: I’m sure by the evidence, that’s not the case...

I got three of them through the primary market, in different local retail stores and the last one in the secondary market, with the help of a fellow collector and former importer / private seller; three of them are Matchbox and one of them is Hot Wheels, I got them in a span of pretty much 2 years.

As far as I know, Matchbox seems to have a wider variety of concept / designer / fantasy / original / internally licensed models based on off-road vehicles than Hot Wheels and the first one offers in general terms more realistic designs for its toy cars, that’s probably the reason why MBX is the majority in this review.

My first guest was called initially Road Tripper and later MBX Prospector, it was released in 2011, it has had at least 14 iterations, all for the Mainline (Regular category); it has a very good level of detail, the design is very realistic and appealing, but the serious drawback is the diecast dose, which makes it a plastcast: it would be great with at least diecast body, but with plastic body and diecast chassis is disappointing.

There is no paint job (the plastic body is silver), but there is a nice decoration on the side panels, with tampos and/or decals, in metallic green, white, black and orange, I added some painted details in golden and metallic red; the windows are smoked, it has no interiors and the plastic wheels feature Ringed Gear 6 Spokes rims design in black, for a very menacing look.

My second guest was named Questor, it was released originally in 2013, it has had at least 6 iterations, all for the Mainline (Regular category), including this one for the Jurassic World Series, that do not fulfill the requirements to be considered an Adult line, it offers a very good level of detail and design, but the diecast proportion is low, just like the previous one, so this is another plastcast: here the diecast body and chassis should be a must.

The paint job was made in metallic beige, the decoration on the side panels, with tampos and/or decals, is very simple, but nice, in royal blue, gray, white and black, I added painted details in silver, golden and metallic red; it has a very welcome gimmick: opening cover for the bed, it almost, almost makes me forget about the overdose of plastic, the windows are black, it has no interiors and the plastic wheels feature 4x4 8 Spokes rims design in chrome blue.

My third guest was called Terrain Storm, mine is the debut of this model in 2016 and it was designed by Dmitriy Shakhmatov, it has had at least 5 iterations, all for the Mainline (Regular category), the level of detail and overal design are great, but again the diecast proportion is the problem here, then this is another plastcast: just like the previous one, the diecast body and chassis should be a must.

The paint job was made in metallic terracotta, the racing decoration on the side panels, the hood and the roof, with tampos and/or decals, is very complex and quite attractive (albeit fictitious), in yellow, black and white, I added painted details in silver; the windows are yellow tinted, the interiors were worked in dark silver and the plastic wheels feature Beadlock Off-Road rims design in golden chrome.

My last guest has been called Emergency Rescue 4x4, Support Truck and MBX Rescue 4x4, it was released originally in 2003, it has had at least 19 iterations, all for the Mainline (Regular category); it offers a very good level of detail as the rest of guests and the design is really good, its is the only diecast of the group: however, in 2018 there were changes in the molds to introduce another plastcast, with plastic body and diecast chassis, so the model was ruined, again.

This is, by the way, the last version with diecast body and light metallic gray plastic chassis; the paint job was made in light orange (that somehow simulates a fluorescent orange), the decoration on the side panels, with tampos and/ or decals, was made in black, white and golden; the windows are blue tinted and the mold includes the healights, a detail I always appreciate, it has dark gray interiors, that include the equipement on the bed and the plastic wheels feature 6 Spokes Sport Utility rims design in chrome; finally, all toy cars by Matchbox were made in Thailand and the one by Hot Wheels was made in Malaysia...

Ezk 33:1-5 "Again the word of the LORD came unto me, saying: Son of man, speak to the children of thy people, and say unto them: When I bring the sword upon a land, if the people of the land take a man of their coasts, and set him for their watchman: If when he seeth the sword come upon the land, he blow the trumpet, and warn the people; then whosoever heareth the sound of the trumpet, and taketh not warning; if the sword come, and take him away, his blood shall be upon his own head. He heard the sound of the trumpet, and took not warning; his blood shall be upon him. But he that taketh warning shall deliver his soul."
