2005 Scania R Series R470 Topline Twinsleeper Cab 4x2 (Single Rear Axle) COE Tractor Head / Semi Truck - Heavy Duty Class 8 Long Distance Hauling Tractor Truck - 2008 (?) Model Collection Series Scale 1:85 by Malibu International Limited / High Speed

The nordic lands of Europe, formerly known as Scandinavia, which in the broadest sense include what is currently identified as: Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland, Åland, Faroe, Svalbard, Jan Mayen Islands and Greenland, are famous worldwide mostly because of the Vikings, a modern term used for the inhabitants of that relatively vast territory in the ancient times...

However, in recent times, these lands and the countries belonging to this region of the world are known because of their high standards of life, in terms of education, health, economy, culture, etc., precisely, due to my guest for this publication, I have to talk a little bit about Sweden...

This country, governed as a constitutional monarchy and a parliamentary democracy, used to be a great and peaceful place to live, but with the beginning of this new century, Sweden has becoming a place were crimes related with drugs, rapes, gun violence, terrorist attacks, extortion, etc., have increased at an alarming pace (symptoms of corruption and a social crisis in progress)...

I can’t help but feeling that the situation in Sweden has some points in common with the situation in my country, although for different reasons and I have clarity on this: Colombia (South America), my homeland, should be a wonderful and thriving place to live, but it’s not...

While in Sweden mass immigration, with lax controls has had an important role in the issues already mentioned (despite the government reluctance to admit it), in my homeland, Colombia, the social crisis situation is the result of more than a century of systematic corruption, exploitation and violence from the government (lately a narco-paramilitary mafia), banking sector, large private entrepreneurs and multinational companies (some execute, while others finance and give orders, but all are part of the same despicable vicious circle)...

Yet, just like in my homeland there are many positive things to highlight and great people, Sweden has great people and a flourishing industry / commerce, with brands widely recognized like: Electrolux, IKEA, H&M, Skanska, Spotify, Vattenfall, Volvo and Scania, among others.

My guest for this publication: the 2005 Scania R Series R470 Topline Twinsleeper Cab 4x2 (Single Rear Axle) COE Tractor Head / Semi Truck, a Heavy Duty Class 8 Long Distance Hauling Tractor Truck, is one of the many products of this world-leading provider of transport solutions.

Scania AB, a Swedish company headquartered in Södertälje and formed in 1911, with the merger of Vabis and Maskinfabriks-aktiebolaget Scania, is currently part of the assets of the Volkswagen Group and received its name from the province of Scania (Skåne in Swedish), whose name means pretty much danger or damage.

What for me is more interesting about my guest, is that Scania has representation here in my homeland so I can see in the flesh some of its products, particularly for the medium and heavy duty segments, including buses and trucks; virtually all the lines are offered (some on request), like the Series L, P, G, R, S, XT and V8, with dealerships in Barranquilla and Neiva...

When you see a brand on the packaging of any collectible, you tend to assume that this brand is the responsible for the design and development, manufacturing and distribution of that product, it seems a sensible assumption, but once you get to know a bit more in depth the industry around collectibles, you also become aware that that’s not always the case...

In fact, in a world where outsourcing has becoming one of the most marked trends in the industry as a whole, it’s getting increasingly difficult to know if a particular brand handles all the three roles already mentioned or just one or two of them...

For instance, I used to think that Malibu International Ltd., a company headquartered in Hong Kong and representation in San Leandro, CA 94577 (USA), founded in 2003 and apparently out of business since 2008, part of the boom of brands of diecast scale models of vehicles during the first half of the 00s, was responsible for designing, developing, manufacturing and distributing its products...

Well, I was wrong and I’m not afraid to admit it: I’m fully aware that I don’t know everything you could know about this hobby, but also that I’m always open to learn so, if I have to change my mind about a certain topic, because of the new information I have gathered, I will do.

After all, what separates mere buyers from collectors is KNOWLEDGE and it’s the latter factor what makes this hobby something meaningful, interesting, enjoyable and relevant way beyond a simple stuff purchasing and accumulation process...

Malibu International Ltd., was a distributor of diecast models, then manufacturing for sure was carried out by other companies from Mainland China; about design and development, there is no reliable information available, so I guess it will remain a mystery by now.

My guest for this review was distributed by this company and I got it through the secondary market, with the help of a fellow collector and former importer / private seller, pretty much 4 years ago; however, I remember that models distributed by Malibu International Ltd., were available in certain toys and collectibles stores of my hometown, only that when I first saw them, I was not interested in collectionism yet.

There was at least another variation of this model and as far as I know, these products in 1:87 scale were manufactured (eventually designed and developed too, albeit is not certain) by High Speed, another Hong Kong based company.

Currently, the products distributed by Malibu International Ltd., are not so readily available, at least not at reasonable prices, but these products were inexpensive in their heyday and their overall quality was way beyond what more popular brands, like Hot Wheels or Matchbox were offering at the same time and price level.

This model belongs to the 2008 (?) Model Collection Series, a line from the Deluxe category, I couldn’t find either reliable information about the actual release date and the packaging (box) doesn’t include a copyright, that usually gives a you a hint about it; the box, by the way, was in a bad shape, but since I don’t collect packages, I don’t mind.

The model has diecast body and dark gray plastic chassis, with an excellent level of detail and realism, the paint job was made in a combination of metallic blue and white with glossy finishing.

What I find curious is that the white was applied with airbrush or a similar tool, it was not tampoed, which is not an automated process, yet the asking price was very affordable, that’s laudable!, specially compared with the petty-mindedness of other brands and it was complemented by clean yellow stripe and the front lights in silver, made with tampos.

The model has holes for side rearview mirrors, but they were not included, I thought it was an issue only in my item, but other models in that line lacked of these parts; the windows are clear, the interiors in dark gray offer a very good level of detail and there is a plastic insert for the front grille nicely molded.

The wheels are multipart, featuring a realistic 10 Holes Hub Piloted rims desing in chrome, styled synthetic rubber tires, it includes a display base in dark gray, with tampos in white, red and black, clear acrylic cover (mine came with several cracks), finally, it was made in China...

Ezk 28:11-19 "Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying: Son of man, take up a lamentation upon the king of Tyrus, and say unto him: Thus saith the LORD GOD: Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty. Thou hast been in Eden the garden of GOD; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created. Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of GOD; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire. Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee. By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of GOD: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire. Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee. Thou hast defiled thy sanctuaries by the multitude of thine iniquities, by the iniquity of thy traffic; therefore will I bring forth a fire from the midst of thee, it shall devour thee, and I will bring thee to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all them that behold thee. All they that know thee among the people shall be astonished at thee: thou shalt be a terror, and never shalt thou be any more."

1981 DeLorean DMC 12 - Compact 2-Door Premium Coupe - Sports Car - Grand Tourer (’81 DeLorean DMC 12) - 1985 Back To The Future I Time Machine 2007 Reel Rides - Back To The Future Series Item No. 09109 Diecast Scale 1:65 by Malibu International Ltd. / High Speed Metal & Plastic Products Mfg Co. Ltd.

Ambition is one of those character traits that demands wisdom when you’re going to put it into action: unlike other traits, without the proper balance, it could be your doom...

Too little ambition and you will become a conformist and mediocre person, who will not achieve any goal in life; but too much of it will lead you to be an unscrupulous person, willing to make even bad decisions in order to achieve a given aim...

This was a lesson that an american engineer, executive and entrepreneur of romanian-austrian descent: John Zachary DeLorean, had to learn in the hard way...

Unfortunately, there is no degree of experience or success that will prepare you to handle the excess of ambition and if we are talking about this kind of things, DeLorean was quite experienced, successful and definitely a man willing to take risks...

His sole participation in the development of the Pontiac GTO, along with Bill Collins and Russ Gee, would have earned DeLorean wide recognition not only in the automotive industry of the United States, but also worldwide (it’s worth mentioning that the GTO had its equivalent in nearly any country where GM had presence; for instance, in Australia, it was the noted Holden Monaro).

Muscle Cars wouldn’t be the same without this contribution and it’s not farfetched to say that perhaps most of the Muscle Cars we know today, wouldn’t have been created if not for the GTO, which was their point of reference.

However, John DeLorean was also involved in the development of the Pontiac Firebird, Pontiac Grand Prix, Chevrolet Cosworth Vega and others, most of them vehicles associated with high performance; not to mention that he was the youngest Division Head in General Motors and by the time he decided to retire from this company, in 1973, he was at the peak of his career.

Shortly after, in 1975, John Zachary founded DeLorean Motor Company (DMC) in Detroit, Michigan, the Motor City and from that moment he embarked on the invention of his iconic brainchild and the base for the guest of my publication today: the 1981 DeLorean DMC 12, a Compact 2-Door Premium Coupe - Sports Car - Grand Tourer that was produced only for two years.

For his very own car, DeLorean had great expectations: the idea, which came up in 1974, started from the premise of building a distinctive and uncommon Grand Tourer that were pleasant to drive, and very much to the surprise of his detractors, the goal was reached, at least to a great extent...

The exterior design was in charge of Giorgetto Guigiaro who was able to give this car its iconic styling, starting from the very in vogue wedge shape, but with its own personality: the car looks futuristic somehow, even today it does and the gull-wing doors as well as the stainless steel panels of its body, contribute largely to this effect.

The interior, structural, chassis and engine design are a different story: the DMC 12 had to be re-engineered more than once, delaying its release and the labor for the final production model was rather inexperienced so, it’s no wonder that this car suffered numerous issues in terms of reliability, adjustment, finishes and overall quality.

Despite the monstrous investment involved in the development and building of his company and the DMC 12, this enterprise demanded even more resources, the company went bankrupt and John DeLorean was so desperate that, in a reckless move, he got involved in a drug-trafficking affair trying to get fresh money: although later he was found not guilty of the charges, the damage to his reputation and career was already done...

Now, there are still die-hard detractors of John DeLorean and his creation, the DMC 12; sometimes it’s easier to criticize without trying to put yourself in the same situation and we are prone to fail very, very often, just in case we forget it (this is very different to criticize knowing the situation first hand, with objective arguments), but some things are for sure...

DeLorean was able to create a car company and an cult car from the scratch, in a record time (if you see it in hindsight); also, he had the guts to make difficult decisions and faced the consequences of his mistakes and overflowing ambition, yet, his legacy is still very appreciated by many, including the owner of this blog...

Since my interest in diecast vehicles resurfaced a little over 6 years ago and thanks to my previous experience with other kind of collectibles, it was clear for me that a single brand wouldn’t meet my expectations or cater my heterogeneous tastes; later I would realize also that being a multi-brand collector would make me virtually "immune" to the tactics of hoarders / scalpers, then it became one of my most important premises in this hobby right away...

I have been searching for new and unusual brands of diecast models (as well as other items for my collection) virtually from the get go; it has been a systematic and patient task, not always successful I must confess, but it’s worth doing so and I have been pleasantly surprised many times by my findings...

I got my guest for this review as part of the imported items of a friend of mine and fellow collector, more than 4 years ago; it was another unexpected find, I wasn’t looking for it actually: while I like to collect items from movies, TV series, videogames, etc., I’m not fond with the Back To The Future (BTTF) franchise, but the DeLorean is one of all time favorite cars...

The model belongs to the 2007 Reel Rides - Back To The Future Series, an item designed by Malibu International Ltd., and produced by High Speed Metal & Plastic Products Mfg Co. Ltd. (maybe in a future publication I will talk about these brands).

It came inside a clamshell with a nice and sober card design, printed in full color and including the emblem of the series embossed; the model itself was incredibly well made, in fact, it meets the requirements for being easily in the Premium category, with outstanding level of detail, correct proportion and excellent finishes.

Since the BTTF franchise is very popular, there are several replicas of the DeLorean Time Machine, in different scales (1:64, 1:50, 1:43, 1:24, 1:18 and some intermediate), made mainly by Welly, Sun Star, Vitesse, Skynet / Aoshima, Hot Wheels and Johnny Lightning.

In the 1:64 scale and the like, I have seen personally the models made by Johnny Lightning and Hot Wheels (including the Collector’s Edition in the Chara Wheels line made only for the Japanese market); this model by Malibu International Ltd., surpasses them all with a better execution as a whole, it looks fine alongside models by Kyosho, Tomica Limited Vintage, CM’s, Oversteer, INNO, Mini GT, etc., it’s that good!...

This DeLorean Time Machine offers diecast body and black plastic chassis, everything nicely detailed; it received a paint job in silver with fine metal flake finishing, in order to simulate the stainless steel panels and it’s complemented by several tampos and/or decals all-around.

Some plastic inserts are part of the package, including the front lights and some devices in the rear engine bay; curiously, the clear windows with additional black tampos for the moldings, don’t include the windowsills of the actual car, but it’s not a big deal for me, the detail in the gray interiors is fantastic.

The multipart wheels, on the other hand, are probably one of the best features of this model and reproduce perfectly the fine design of the actual ones, created by Giorgetto Guigiaro exclusively for the DMC 12; I have not seen this level quality in the molding, not even in models by Tarmac, for instance so, it speaks very well of this not so common brand; the model includes a trading card printed in full color and it was made in China...

Psa 25:3-9 "Yea, let none that wait on thee be ashamed: let them be ashamed which transgress without cause. Show me thy ways, O LORD; teach me thy paths. Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the GOD of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day. Remember, O LORD, thy tender mercies and thy lovingkindnesses; for they have been ever of old. Remember not the sins of my youth, nor my transgressions: according to thy mercy remember thou me for thy goodness' sake, O LORD. Good and upright is the LORD: therefore will he teach sinners in the way. The meek will he guide in judgment: and the meek will he teach his way."
