A finales de los 90s y principios de los 00s, el segmento de los Vehículos Deportivo-Utilitarios (VDU o SUV, por sus siglas en inglés) de 4 Puertas estaba ya consolidado después de un comienzo más bien tímido a principios de los 60s, cuando la marca Jeep, en aquella época propiedad de Kaiser Jeep Corporation, introdujo para el mercado norteamericano la longeva Wagoneer...
En realidad, el concepto de un VDU de 4 Puertas era bastante innovador para 1963, cuando la primera iteración de la Wagoneer vio la luz y la versión 2 Puertas de esta clase de vehículos era mucho más popular entre los consumidores...
Tomó más o menos 3 décadas a las VDUs de 4 Puertas para tomar el liderazgo de este segmento, desplazando a sus pares de 2 Puertas en las preferencias a nivel mundial, debido a su practicidad y conveniencia: se convirtió en la primera opción para las familias y llegó para quedarse.
En semejanza a otra clase de vehículos que empezaron como medios de transporte utilitarios, los Vehículos Deportivo-Utilitarios, particularmente en su configuración de 4 Puertas, evolucionaron para llegar a ser vehículos de estilo de vida y luego vehículos de lujo.
Con esta evolución, su participación en el mercado automotor ha estado creciendo constantemente y marcas de autos que fueron reacias por largo tiempo a siquiera considerar la inclusión de esta clase de vehículos en sus portafolios, están ahora desarrollando, produciendo y vendiendo VDUs de forma regular.
Hoy en día, incluso marcas en los segmentos de lujo y exótico ofrecen VDUs, obviamente con una etiqueta de precio más bien escandalosa unida a ellas, lo cual es de esperarse, pero la "fiebre" por estos vehículos explotó con el comienzo del presente siglo.
Precisamente, una de esas marcas que tradicionalmente no estaban tan interesadas en vehículos con un perfil utilitario, como Cadillac, fueron "convertidas" a la "facción VDU" y uno de sus primeros productos de esta tipología fue mi invitada para esta publicación: la Cadillac Escalade AWD de 2002, una VDU de Tamaño Completo de Lujo 5 Puertas...
Si bien la Escalade fue introducida como modelo en 1999, basada yo diría fuertemente en sus pares Chevrolet y GMC, a saber, Tahoe y Yukon Denaly respectivamente, no fue sino hasta la segunda generación, lanzada para 2002, que la Escalade recibió un tratamiento más personalizado adentro y afuera, con el fin de darle su propio "carácter".
A pesar de ser un Vehículo Deportivo-Utilitario que comparte su plataforma con camionetas pickup de tamaño completo, quiero decir, no es una Crossover sino una VDU en todo el sentido de la palabra, la Escalade empaca un montón de lujo, comodidades y potencia en un vehículo de tamaño grande, que se siente bien ya sea como un crucero familiar o como un coche corporativo para hombres y mujeres de negocios: es esta clase de versatilidad, entre otros factores, lo que explica el éxito de las VDUs en términos generales...
Johnny Lightning es una de las muy, muy pocas marcas, bueno, asumiendo que hay otra marca que cumple el criterio y lo estoy dudando seriamente, que ha sido reintroducida al mercado dos veces, después que estuvo completamente fuera del negocio: una vez en 1971, después de una aparición más bien fugaz (fue creada originalmente en 1969), para reaparecer en 1994 y la segunda vez en 2013, para reaparecer en 2016...
Digamos que este hecho por sí solo habla muy bien acerca de Johnny Lightning, porque definitivamente debe haber algo bastante especial sobre ella, para haber sido rescatada de la extinción y el olvido dos veces, a diferencia de muchas otras marcas en la industria alrededor de esta afición que no tuvieron el mismo destino, en algunos casos, muy para nuestro pesar como coleccionistas adultos...
Esa es otra razón poderosa para mi admiración por esta marca y lo que cuenta aún más para mí, es que JL logró esta hazaña no a través de campañas de mercadeo extensivas y agresivas como otras marcas hacen (particularmente Hot Wheels y Matchbox, probablemente con el fin de tratar de esconder las deficiencias de sus productos), sino ofreciendo un producto de calidad para la categoría Premium, que los coleccionistas adultos pueden apreciar si le dan una oportunidad.
Si esto no fuera suficiente, Johnny Lightning también tiene una selección particular de modelos que se aparta de las cosas tradicionales / populares, algo que realmente aprecio en una marca de coleccionables y mis invitadas para esta reseña son una muestra concreta de esta declaración, porque no hay muchas réplicas a escala de la Escalade, ni hablar de escalas pequeñas (alrededor de 1:64) y/o de la categoría Premium.
Este par de VDUs de tamaño completo, que pertenecen a la Serie Lightning Strike - New Cars - Real Wheels de 2004 y a la Serie Modern CLUE Series (Mrs. Peacock) de 2004 respectivamente, son dos iteraciones de uno de los varios modelos que no han sido lanzados de nuevo en esta nueva etapa de Johnny Lightning de la mano de Round 2.
Las conseguí a través del mercado secundario y siempre vale la pena mencionar que aquí en mi tierra natal Colombia, no hay manera de conseguir productos de Johnny Lightning en el mercado primario; un amigo mío, colega coleccionista e importador / vendedor privado y una tienda de coleccionables local fueron los medios para conseguir estos artículos, fue hace más o menos 5 años.
Tienen construcción completa en diecast, como es usual con JL (excepto cuando estuvo directamente en las manos de Takara Tomy), las proporciones fueron muy bien manejadas y el nivel de detalle, así como el realismo y acabados son bastante satisfactorios, hasta el chasis.
Los trabajos de pintura en plateado y azul rey oscuro son excelentes y están complementados no solo por tampos y/o calcomanías completos, sino también por una decoración temática en el caso de aquel hecho para la Serie Modern CLUE; los interiores fueron trabajados en negro para ambas muestras, mientras que las ventanas son transparentes y ahumadas respectivamente.
El primer modelo (Cadillac Escalade de 2004) tiene ruedas multiparte presentando un diseño de rimes simple pero agradable 6 Spokes en cromado y llantas en caucho sintético labradas, mientras en la segunda (Cadillac Escalade de 2002), hay ruedas multiparte plásticas, presentando un diseño de rimes muy realista y lujoso 10 V Spokes, con acabado cromado y llantas lisas; ambas ofrecen como bonus tarjetas de colección fabulosas, impresas al frente y a todo color respectivamente, finalmente, ambas fueron hechas en China...

By the end of the 90s and early 00s, the segment of 4-Door Sport-Utility Vehicles (SUV) was already consolidated after a rather shy start in the early 60s, when the brand Jeep, at that time owned by Kaiser Jeep Corporation, introduced for the American market the long-lived Wagoneer...
Actually the concept of a 4-Doors SUV was quite innovative for 1963, when the first iteration of the Wagoneer saw the light and the 2-Door version of this kind of vehicles was far more popular among consumers...
It took pretty much 3 decades to the 4-Door SUVs to take the leadership of this segment, displacing their 2-Door peers in the preferences worldwide, due to their practicality and convenience: it became the first option for families and it came to stay.
In the likeness of other kind of vehicles that started as utilitarian means of transportation, the Sport-Utility Vehicles, particularly in their 4-Door configuration, evolved to become lifestyle vehicles and then to luxury vehicles.
With this evolution, their share in the automotive market has been growing steadily and car brands that were reluctant for a long time to even consider the inclusion of this kind of vehicles in their portfolios, are now developing, producing and selling SUVs in a regular basis.
Nowadays, even brands in the luxury and exotic segments offer SUVs, obviously with a rather scandalous price tag attached to them, which is to be expected, but the "fever" for these vehicles exploded with the beginning of the present century.
Precisely, one of those brands that traditionally were not so interested in vehicles with an utilitarian profile, like Cadillac, were "converted" to the "SUV side" and one of its first products of this typology was my guest for this publication: the 2002 Cadillac Escalade AWD, a Full Size Luxury 5-Door SUV...
While the Escalade was introduced as model in 1999, based I would say heavily on its Chevrolet and GMC peers, namely, Tahoe and Yukon Denaly respectively, it was not until its second generation, released for 2002, that the Escalade received a more personalized treatment inside and out, in order to give it its own "character".
Despite being a Sport-Utility Vehicle that shares its platform with full size pickup trucks, I mean, it’s not a Crossover but a SUV in all the sense of the word, the Escalade packs a lot of luxury, amenities and power in a large size vehicle, that feels fine either as a family cruiser or as a corporate ride for business men and women: it’s this kind of versatility, among other factors, what explains the success of SUVs in general terms...
Johnny Lightning is one of the very, very few brands, well, assuming that there is another brand that meets the criteria and I’m seriously doubting it, that has been reintroduced to the market two times, after it was completely out of business: once in 1971, after a rather fleeting appearance (it was created originally in 1969), to reappear in 1994 and the second time in 2013, to reappear in 2016...
Let’s say that this fact by itself speaks very well about Johnny Lightning, because there must be definitely something quite special about it, to have been rescued from extinction and oblivion two times, unlike many other brands in the industry around this hobby that didn’t have that fate, in some cases, much to our regret as adult collectors...
That’s another powerful reason for my admiration by this brand and what counts even more for me, is that JL achieved this feat not through extensive and aggressive marketing campaings as other brands do (particularly Hot Wheels and Matchbox, probably in order to try to hide the shortcomings of their products), but offering a quality product for the Premium category, that adult collectors can appreciate if they give it a chance.
If that weren’t enough, Johnny Lightning has also a very particular selection of models that departs from the traditional / popular stuff, something I really appreciate in a brand of collectibles and my guests for this review are a concrete sample of this statement, because there are not so many scale replicas of the Escalade, let alone small scales (around 1:64) and/or from the Premium category.
This pair of Full Size SUVs, that belong to the 2004 Lightning Strike - New Cars - Real Wheels Series and to the 2004 Modern CLUE Series (Mrs. Peacock) respectively, are two iterations of one of the several models that have not been released again in this new stage of Johnny Lightning by the hand of Round 2.
I got them through the secondary market and it’s always worth mentioning that here in my homeland Colombia, there is no way to get products by Johnny Lightning in the primary market; a friend of mine, fellow collector and importer / private seller and a local collectibles store were the means to get these items, it was pretty much 5 years ago.
They have full diecast construction, as usual with JL (except when it was directly in the hands of Takara Tomy), proportions were very well managed and the level of detail, as well as the realism and finishes are quite satisfying, down to the chasis.
The paint jobs in silver and dark royal blue are excellent and they are complemented not only by complete tampos and/or decals, but also by a themed decoration in the case of the one made for the Modern CLUE Series; the interiors were worked in black for both samples, while the windows are clear and smoked respectively.
The first model (2004 Cadillac Escalade) has multipart wheels featuring a simple but nice 6 Spokes rims design in chrome and styled synthetic rubber tires, while in the second one (2002 Cadillac Escalade), there are multipart plastic wheels, featuring a very realistic and luxurious 10 V Spokes rims design, with chrome finishing and slick tires; both offer as bonus great trading cards, printed in front and full color respectively, finally, both were made in China...
