2013 Hot Wheels - Bandito Brothers - Ford Racing Rip Rod (Rip Rod) Subcompact Single-Seater Concept Off-Road Vehicle 2014 HW Off-Road - Hot Wheels Test Facility Series 96/250 Diecast Scale 1:66 by Hot Wheels

I’m pretty sure that there must be countless explanations about the huge popularity of Hot Wheels in the diecast market, even outside such market and it’s the latter, I mean, that "magnetic effect" that HW has in people other than collectors, what’s truly interesting for me about this brand...

Mattel as multinational toy manufacturing company and its diecast toy cars division, represented by Hot Wheels and Matchbox, have a differential factor that makes them excel among other diecast manufacturers: they are very strong in the management of marketing strategies...

Now, when someone says that Hot Wheels is a very successful brand, because it sells millions of toy cars worldwide, that’s actually the effect, not the cause of the phenomenon generated by this brand...

It’s like looking for the cause of a fever in the sheets and not in the sick person, if you know what I mean...

This marketing driven approach in Hot Wheels has been an essential trait since its beginnings in 1968 and don’t get me wrong, it’s not that other diecast brands are refractory to the use of marketing in their business model, rather it’s the fact that Hot Wheels, like let’s say Coke or Nike or Apple, don’t sell just products, they sell experiences...

The fact that the blue brand of Mattel is actively involved in different disciplines of motorsports and other events related with the automotive culture, is concrete evidence in that regard, one of these events is the SEMA Show.

In 2012, began a joint-venture between Hot Wheels and Bandito Brothers, an audiovisual content creation and production studio based in Los Angeles, California, to develop a concept car for the 2013 SEMA.

Unlike other crazy ideas of the "blue big brother", where one of its toy cars is transformed into a lifesize functional replica, this project was the other way around, well, nearly...

Hot Wheels counts with its own team of car builders and this team was in charge of such development, along with Bandito Brothers, but there wasn’t a suitable engine for this small off-road gem so, the model introduced in the show was basically a realistic and yet static maquette, called Rip Rod, hauled by another concept / custom project: the HW Ford Transit Connect (published here and included by double entry in this photo shoot).

Surely, convinced by the impact of this pair of powerful marketing tools on the attendants and the media, Ford decided to be part of this project, which would be as well a perfect fire test for its award winning and tiny, but promising 1.0 L (61 cu in) EcoBoost turbocharged engine, that offers good performance with fuel economy.

However, when the 2013 Hot Wheels - Bandito Brothers - Ford Racing Rip Rod came to life, thanks to the heart provided by the latter, the least of their concerns was the fuel economy, obviously and while there is no word on the special tuning for this engine, the video included in this review shows that delivers what it promises!...

Hot Wheels knows that creating compelling experiences around its products, their sales will skyrocket, which is exactly what we can see; even more, these experiences attract new buyers, create new collectors and that’s what marketing manage to do usually, but there is always a good side and a bad side in these matters...

Speaking for myself, I’m fully aware of the existence of fraudulent marketing, which fools you making you believe that a product is good, when in fact it isn’t.

That’s why I’m rather refractory to these marketing strategies and as collectors with some experience, what I really care about is the product itself; yet, I’m glad that as result of these campaigns, I can get models that really fit my taste and that’s definitely the case here.

The Rip Rod is the kind of models that most collectors will consider fanciful at first sight, but an actual vehicle was developed before the production of the scale replica and that fact should make a difference in how these designer models are perceived by the community around this hobby, because you don’t know when a toy car will become a real car.

Hot Wheels hires automotive, graphic and product designers, among other professionals, to create its models, just like other diecast companies do and since I myself am a professional graphic designer, I respect their work, albeit I’m not always satisfied with the overcome in their products; truth is that the issues many times don’t depend on the design department, but on the finances department, that always is looking for ways to cut costs and lately they are doing their job a bit too well, if you ask me...

The Rip Rod model was created by Fraser Campbell, part of the new school; so far 5 iterations have been made for the regular lines and I love how the design pays tribute to the old Hot Rods, but with a futuristic twist, it looks menacing and that’s a great compliment for a vehicle that in its actual version, is pretty much the size of a Ford Fiesta!...

I got it by myself, after an intensive search in several chain retail stores, because I found many with misplaced or scratched tampos; it belongs to the HW Off-Road - Hot Wheels Test Facility Series, part of the mainline; it has plastic body in pearl dark blue, plastic substructure (tub frame, that was molded solid) in silver and diecast chassis, painted in glossy orange; I would like to see a diecast body and since it’s not too big, it wouldn’t add too much cost to the production, but the "plastic" policy of Hot Wheels is overwhelming; the body received tampos on the side panels featuring a Hot Wheels logo in white, red and yellow and I added some touches of paint here and there.

The seat was molded with the chassis, a very unusual configuration used generally in Funny Cars, the substructure (tube frame) includes the safety cage, there is a plastic insert in solid orange for the windows and the prominent front grille; the plastic wheels feature the Muscle 5 Spoke rims design and chrome orange contour, unlike the real car, they are smaller in front and it was made in Malaysia...

Eph 3:1-6 "For this cause I Paul, the prisoner of JESUS CHRIST for you Gentiles, if ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of GOD which is given me to you-ward: how that by revelation HE made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words, whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of CHRIST) Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto His holy apostles and prophets by the SPIRIT; that the Gentiles should be fellow heirs, and of the same body, and partakers of His promise in CHRIST by the Gospel..."

2013 Ford Transit Connect XL -LWB- (Long Wheel Base) Cargo Van (Hot Wheels Racing Livery) - Compact Multi-Purpose Vehicle (HW Ford Transit Connect) 2014 HW Workshop - HW Garage Series 210/250 Diecast Scale 1:66 plus 2013 Ford Transit Connect XL -LWB- (Long Wheel Base) Cargo Van (Hot Wheels Racing Livery) - Compact Multi-Purpose Vehicle (HW Ford Transit Connect) 2014 HW Workshop - HW Garage Series 210/250 Diecast Scale 1:66 by Hot Wheels

ENGLISH
In most cases, the average car enthusiast will not feel euphoric when someone mentions his sympathy for a Compact Multi-Purpose Vehicle (C-MPV); on the contrary, the first one will ask dumbfounded: are you wrong in the head, pal?...

The MPVs, have not been subject of the admiration from the general public and maybe it has to do with those traits of utilitarian vehicle that characterize them; some people think that such traits take away certain "status", just like it happens with the models converted into taxi cabs...

I don’t know exactly how it works in other countries, but in my homeland Colombia, a model loses between 10% and 20% of its commercial value for sale or resale, once a taxi version is released.

On the other hand, the MPVs, Minivans, Leisure Activity Vehicles (LAVs) or whatever you wanna call them, have been designed pretty much like boxes on wheels, which hardly could be considered compelling or ravishing by most people and it has been this way since their heyday in the 80s.

Now, there was a time when I thought that boxy vehicles were rather awful, tasteless; but such perception changed when I knew more about the backstory and the time when they were conceived; you know, that’s what knowledge usually does, changes mindsets.

There is a simple principle behind the boxy shape: it allows the maximum use of space possible, either for cargo or for passengers, although it represents a challenge in terms of aerodynamics.

This boxy shape, nonetheless, has been evolving; as in other segments, every now and then a car brand comes with a revolutionary idea about a hackneyed typology of vehicles, recently it was the turn of Ford to change the game rules.

When it comes to "think out of the box", literally, Ford is able to amaze us with vehicles that set a new standard and that’s precisely what you feel with the 2013 Ford Transit Connect XL -LWB- (Long Wheel Base) Cargo Van - Compact Multi-Purpose Vehicle

This model has been in the market for a considerable time (since 1965, when it was officially introduced in Europe, more specifically in United Kingdom) and comprises a group of utilitarian vehicles that offers several body configurations for cargo, passengers or a combination of both.

The Connect is a smaller variant of the Transit, created with the startups and microenterprises in mind and for 2013, received much more than a facelift.

It actually stands out among the other offers in this segment; in my opinion as designer, even the leader of this market, the Mercedes-Benz Metris, doesn’t look as impactful as the Connect, which results a great sample of the Kinetic Design Philosophy, driven by Martin Smith, the Executive Design Director for Ford of Europe.

It was created by the previously mentioned Ford subsidiary and built on the platform of the Focus; the Transit Connect was a step in the right way for Ford, after a not so good sales performance of the previous generation of Minivans / MPVs, created until 2008.

The factory model looks really cutting edge, with style and personality I would say, but I’m featuring a custom vehicle that was developed for the 2013 SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) and obviously, it was a powerful marketing tool...

In this Custom Transit Connect, took part Ford Motors Company, Hot Wheels and Ice 9 Group (the latter from Michigan), it was heavily modified inside and out.

Among the numerous alterations, I could mention a full euro-look wide body kit, that gives it an even more aggressive look, definitely the front (inspired in the Focus RS) and the flared fenders help in that sense; 20" Rotiform ROC Wheels, tool storage, slide-out drawers (obviously for your Hot Wheels collection!); gullwing side doors instead of the factory sliding doors; Recaro seats (from a Focus ST), a 55" TV, a pair of 18" tablets and if that weren’t enough, it was hauling another fabulous Hot Wheels Concept: the Rip Rod...

What else you may ask, HUH? =PPPPP...

At times, my "faith" in Mattel and a pair of its products, namely: Hot Wheels and Matchbox, returns and I feel happy again, like a kid, which is unusual, since Mattel thinks more on its profit than in the collectors’ happiness, to be honest.

I’m not talking this time about the issues in the availability of models, that remain without resolving, albeit sporadically you see some improvement.

NO, I’m talking about the recent releases by Hot Wheels, which are either a complete success or a complete failure, rarely something in the middle; it’s clear that my publication today, introduces one of those complete hits

The HW Ford Transit Connect is a model with incredible potential and I read somewhere, that some people were expecting a SEMA exclusive version, available for sale only at the launch event (it looks like envy and greed pullulate, don’t you think so?); but Hot Wheels decided to put this delicious scale replica in the hands of much more people (such a generous gesture from Mattel, that it’s almost unbelievable!)...

This model was designed by Fraser Campbell, part of the new school and until now, only 3 iterations have been made (including variations); it’s a really cool cast, fairly detailed, realistic and shapely.

Mine is the debut model, belonging to the HW Workshop - HW Garage Series and it’s by far the best of all the three iterations (so great, that I got two of the very same Series); it was indeed an arduous selection process, looking for them in several retail stores, among many with errors, misplaced or incomplete tampos and I almost gave up.

They have diecast body and silver plastic chassis; the paint job is a very accurate reproduction of the decoration in the actual car (that’s extremely rare for the Hot Wheels standards!), but I made some touch ups here and there, slightly different in both, that made them even more lovely for me.

The interiors are black, with decent level of detail, only for the cabin, the windows are smoked, the plastic wheels feature the Open Hole 5 Spoke (OH5S) rims design, with orange chrome contour and they were made in Malaysia...

1 Cor 2:6-9 "Howbeit we speak Wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to naught: but we speak the Wisdom of GOD in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which GOD ordained before the world unto our glory: which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the LORD of Glory. But as it is written: eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which GOD hath prepared for them that love HIM."
