2015 Aston Martin DB10 - Compact 2-Door 2-Seater Fastback Coupe Sports Car / Grand Tourer (Concept Car / Prototype Car Spectre - 007 Movie Car) 2016 HW Showroom Series 2/10 - 112/250 Diecast Scale 1:67 by Hot Wheels

For a certain reason that remains waiting to see the light, because there is always two versions of any event you could name: the one that is widely disclosed, also known as "official version" and the actual or true version, there has been a special "partnership" between the 007 - James Bond franchise and Aston Martin...

While the Ian Fleming’s saga about the archetypal British secret agent and his adventures trying to save the world, another product of the entertainment industry, has featured several cars from different brands and provenances, there has been a consistent presence of British vehicles on the screen, which is to be expected due to the provenance of the protagonist, of course...

Someone would argue that the first film of the franchise, namely Dr. No, released in 1962, didn’t feature any Aston Martin and that even in the second movie, namely From Russia With Love, released in 1963, not a single car by that brand was seen, "only" a Bentley Mark IV and that’s true, I couldn’t disagree.

But this sort of "automotive love affair" started with the third film, namely Goldfinger, released in 1964 and ever since the Aston Martin BD Series has been a "synonymous" of 007 ride, which has benefited both brands substantially (probably part of the reason of their "partnership").

Now, the Aston Martin DB5 has been by far the most recognized Bond car ever, so much that it was featured in 6 of the 007 films, well 8 times if you count its introduction in the most recent movies, Spectre and No Time To Die, but this time I’m introducing a more recent rendition of the Series for this publication: the 2015 Aston Martin DB10, a Compact 2-Door 2-Seater Fastback Coupe Sports Car / Grand Tourer.

What makes standout this DB among other vehicles with this designation, is that unlike them, the DB10 was never meant to be a production car, I mean, even as the concept car it is, it was not aimed at being more than a "sketch", above all because it noticeably departed from the design language that Aston Martin was using until then for the DB Series.

Yet, the director of the 24th installment of the 007 franchise, Sam Mendes, was able to convince the design studio team at Aston Martin to build a movie car based on the sketch by Marek Reichman, the talented designer behind this concept and 10 units were built on an enlarged V8 Vantage chassis.

The result was a stunning sports car (sportier and angrier than a grand tourer indeed) featuring some design cues that were incorporated gradually in later Aston Martin models (the 2018 Aston Martin Vantage, to be more precise).

A model more in tune with the rougher personality of the current Bond: Daniel Craig; 1 of the 2 units produced, which were used for only promotion, was auctioned, getting big money for sure, albeit these cars cannot be used on any public road, because they did not undergo the mandatory testing processes for production vehicles and they are basically prototypes...

Popular cars, more than anything else, have been a clear focus for the brand of the flaming logo, for obvious reasons, just because Hot Wheels is the largest toy cars manufacturer and it can’t afford to explore too often obscure vehicles, because they do not guarantee big sales, is that simple...

Yet, the design team have had a sort of titanic fight against the executives in charge of financial decisions and you can see a few "rarities" popping up every now and then because of those efforts...

I applaud this work, I have been doing it since a while ago, because if not by these efforts, Hot Wheels would become a gargantuan brand with little to no interest for collectors or even for buyers, due to its excessive costs-cutting policies.

Being so, all the "glory and fame" built through deceiving marketing campaigns (because the quality that we the collectors demand, stopped being a priority for this brand long ago), will crumble in a matter of a few years...

My guest for this review somehow manages to be a good mix between something popular and something odd, because well, this is a movie car, right?, in that sense it’s a rather obvious selection for the blue brand of Mattel, but it’s also a prototype car, not legal for the street, with a production of barely 10 units, so it’s interesting definitely.

The design of this toy car was in the hands of Fraser Campbell and the work is very nice in general, albeit to be honest the front grille in black plastic doesn’t make it any favor, just because it should be made in diecast, in other words, part of the body, not of the interiors, but again, the costs-cutting policies are there to remind us the kind of company Mattel is and the kind of brand Hot Wheels is too: nothing speaks more clearly about that than the product itself, regardless the lies brand promoters want to spread.

I cannot stress enough that being a toy car, accurate proportions are not its matter and it never was, as with any other item of that kind: in this specific case, while the length is around 1:64 scale (not very usual in this brand, for those who really know about scale models matters), the width is around 1:70 scale, then it looks noticeably narrower than it should and the "scale" resulting is an average: anyone claiming that a toy car has consistent proportions is an ignorant by decision, a brand promoter trying to please sponsors by telling lies about these products or both.

I got it through the primary market, in a local retail store; it’s the debut model for the 2016 HW Showroom Series, it has had 4 iterations for lines in the Regular and Adult categories; the mold is very decent in terms of detail for a toy car, although the tail lights are barely visible.

The model offers diecast body and dark silver plastic chassis textured to give the impression of a metallic finishing; the paint job in silver with fine Metalflake finishing reproduces very closely the one in the actual car, there were included only tampos and/or decals for the headlights, the Aston Martin emblem in front and the subtle air induction openings on the hood.

It has blue tinted windows that do not look so good, smoked would be much better and the interiors were worked in black, with a basic level of detail, as almost always; the plastic wheels feature 10 Spokes rims design, with chrome finishing, somewhat similar to those in the actual DB10 and it was made in Malaysia...

Act 20:18-21 "And when they were come to him, he said unto them: Ye know, from the first day that I came into Asia, after what manner I have been with you at all seasons, serving the Lord with all humility of mind, and with many tears, and temptations, which befell me by the lying in wait of the Jews: And how I kept back nothing that was profitable unto you, but have showed you, and have taught you publicly, and from house to house, testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward GOD, and faith toward our LORD JESUS CHRIST."

2006 - 2010 BMW Z4 M Coupe Motorsport Version (E86) Racing Car - Compact 2-Door 2-Seater Sports Car / Grand Tourer / Racing Car GT3 Group (Cup Grand Touring Cars) / JAF-GT (Japanese Automobile Federation - Grand Touring) 2016 BMW (Hidden Treasure Hunts) Series 3/5 - 188/250 Diecast Scale 1:67 by Hot Wheels

That BMW has been quite involved with motorsports is obvious, not only for the number of entries in different kinds of competitions, virtually since the 60s of the last century, but because this company also has its own subsidiary of high performance and racing developments to show its commitment, just like other prestigious companies in this segment...

In that sense, there are similarities between the former aircraft engine manufacturer and its peer in the car manufacturing industry: Mercedes-Benz, which in turn has the AMG subsidiary, both can boast a remarkable work in the world of motoring, along with other renowned German brands like Audi or Porsche and up to a point, Volkswagen and Opel...

In the case of BMW M, most of its racing developments have been focused on grand touring competitions, for which this subsidiary creates vehicles heavily modified, based on sedans / saloons or coupes manufactured by its parent establishment.

However, other motoring disciplines are part of its portfolio, for instance, currently BMW M is involved with the IndyCar Series, also there was a time, not so long ago, when it was directly involved with the Formula 1 Series, in association with Williams Racing and while BMW has not had cars competing in rally racing, it has been participating with its motorcycles, equally modified by M.

And talking about one of the many products developed by BMW M GmbH for competition, my guest for this publication represent a relatively recent development: the 2006 - 2010 BMW Z4 M Coupe Motorsport Version (E86) Racing Car, a Compact 2-Door 2-Seater Sports Car / Grand Tourer / Racing Car, prepared for the GT3 Group (Cup Grand Touring Cars), but also for the JAF-GT (Japanese Automobile Federation - Grand Touring) Series.

The BMW Z4, initially released as a roadster with the code E85, which by the way is the main body configuration for the Z Series, later, in 2006, was accompanied by a coupe version with the code E86, the latter was the basis for this racing car, in fact, both the street and the racing version of the Z4 coupe were released virtually at the same time.

Since the panorama of motorsports has been changing substantially over time, new regulations are introduced in order to make this business more attractive for car brands and racing teams, the Z4 M Coupe Motorsport was created with private teams in mind and indeed it was a successful platform in several endurance championships around the world, particularly for teams in Germany, United Kingdom, Belgium and Japan...

It has been 27 years, since Hot Wheels introduced the segmentation of its Mainline in several series, with some sort of common thread between the models included in each one and a catchy name; it was by the same time when the Treasure Hunts Series had its debut and obviously we’re talking about another marketing strategy...

While I am, as collector and as person with common sense, someone who is not precisely "in love" with marketing campaigns in general terms and in fact it’s the other way around, sometimes I can see that a few of these sales tools actually have a positive effect in the market in which they are implemented...

By ‘positive effect’ I mean, how some marketing strategies manage to satisfy a particular need or to fill a void, for instance and to be precise, when a collector is interested in a particular brand of cars and one of these segmented series in the Mainline of Hot Wheels, happens to offer an assortment of toy cars with that particularity in mind.

That’s the case with my guest for this review, a model developed by the talented Fraser Campbell and released originally in 2012; it has had at least 6 iterations, including variations, all for the Mainline (Regular category) and my sample belongs to the 2016 BMW Series, but it’s as well part of the regular Treasure Hunts introduced for that year.

I got this toy car through the primary market, at a local retail store, more than 5 years ago; despite being a toy car, it has very good level of detail and a more than decent resemblance with the actual car.

It has diecast body and plastic chassis in dark silver with tiny traces of what looks like metallic flakes, but it must be some sort of glitter; the paint job was made in dark blue, with Metalflake finishing, complemented by a very neat decoration with tampos and/or decals on the side panels and the hood in white, light blue and red, inspired by graphics used on M vehicles, I added painted touches for the front grille, headlights and tail lights.

The mold of the interiors in silver included a roll cage inside the cabin and as usual with Hot Wheels, the level of detail is basic, yet the addition of a roll cage always improves realism in a racing car, the windows are clear; it offers plastic wheels with 5 Spokes Phil Rielhman rims design in chrome and it was made in Malaysia...

Act 19:33-36 "And they drew Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews putting him forward. And Alexander beckoned with the hand, and would have made his defense unto the people. But when they knew that he was a Jew, all with one voice about the space of two hours cried out: Great is Diana of the Ephesians. And when the town clerk had appeased the people, he said: Ye men of Ephesus, what man is there that knoweth not how that the city of the Ephesians is a worshiper of the great goddess Diana, and of the image which fell down from Jupiter? Seeing then that these things cannot be spoken against, ye ought to be quiet, and to do nothing rashly."

1973 BMW 3.5 CSL (E9) - Midsize 2-Door Notchback Hardtop Coupe / Grand Tourer / Sports Car - European Touring Car Championship / Deutsche Rennsport Meisterchaft Group 2 Racing Car (’73 BMW 3.0 CSL Race Car) 2016 BMW Series 5/5 - 190/250 (White 68 and Black 16 Versions) Diecast Scale 1:65 by Hot Wheels

A luxury car with the power enough inside its engine bay to being considered sports car as well or as some people designate it: a gran turismo (grand tourer), which becomes a noticeable success in competitions with pedigree, doesn’t seem to be a particularly unique case in the automotive world...

Some car brands from both sides of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans have produced specimens that coincide partially or completely with the previous description: from Nissan to Chrysler, from Bentley to Cadillac, from Bugatti to Duesenberg, from Alfa Romeo to Auburn, from Ferrari to Shelby, from Jaguar to Packard, from Mercedes-Benz to Ford, from Holden to Hudson, from Maseratti to Stutz, from Aston Martin to AMC...

I mean, there are a good amount of examples involving vehicles that mixed luxury, sportiness and a bath of glory in automobile competitions, but in the case of my guest for this publication, it’s not just about those characteristics and don’t get me wrong, these things are relevant, of course...

However, at the time when the New Class by BMW was introduced in the market, the brand from Bavaria was struggling to remain active in a difficult economic panorama, because in the 50s, the company underwent an important financial crisis.

The lack of appealing of its products for an increasingly affluent clientele, put BMW in a situation where it needed desperately to change its image of manufacturer of luxurious but unprofitable or basic cars and motorcycles, that were not in tune with the tastes of the time.

Precisely, the New Class, to which belongs my guest today: the 1973 BMW 3.5 CSL (E9), a Midsize 2-Door Notchback Hardtop Coupe / Grand Tourer / Sports Car - European Touring Car Championship / Deutsche Rennsport Meisterchaft Group 2 Racing Car, is a line of vehicles located in between.

In fact, the Neue Klasse laid the foundations of a new reputation for Bayerische Motoren Werke: ever since the brand became associated with luxury, performance, sportiness, producing cars with enough guts to have a prominent role in motorsports (a prestige long lost) and all these factors had a direct positive impact on its financial status.

The BMW 3.5 CSL, a designation that by the way applies to the racing car, since the street version, offered for homologation purposes, featured a 3.0 L engine, while the version for competition offered more displacement and many other modifications, including a special body kit with fender flares and it was the first work of the nascent M - Motorsport Division.

Curiously, the CSL was dubbed "Batmobile", because of the full aero package designed to improve its performance and finally defeat the Ford Capri and Porsche 911, its previous executioners (illegal for street use in Germany, but quite striking when applied partially to the "stock" version), that gives it a rather "gothic" overall appearance, which by the way was key for its success in the different championships it participated...

Between design and production there are so many processes involved, so many people that could take good or bad decisions (the latter are taken on a regular basis, particularly when it comes to save money and please shareholders, even if that means ruin the product), that usually you find a huge difference between the original concept and the final product...

With Mattel and its products: Hot Wheels and Matchbox, that’s painfully obvious and that’s why I had low expectations when I was still acquiring products from lines of the Regular, Adult and eventually Deluxe categories: since 2018, I stopped wasting money on those items, because I got tired of its reiterated mediocrity (a combination of poor quality control and high asking price, that is just unacceptable), of the products by the red giant...

My guests for this review, which I got through the primary market, in a pair of local retail stores, pretty much 5 years ago, are up to a point an exception to the consistent mediocrity of HW and I will explain it right away: first, I appreciate the work by Fraser Campbell in terms of design, because it’s a very good representation of the CSL racing car, bearing in mind the limitations of a toy car by the brand of the flaming logo.

They have diecast body and plastic chassis, in white and black respectively, with a decent level of detail, there is a good dose of realism; the paint jobs were made in white and black, with glossy finishing and an appropriate thickness, for a change.

The decoration, on the other hand, based on the actual racing cars, has a very good design and a very poor execution, so typical in Hot Wheels, but at least it was made with tampos in light blue, dark blue and red (white was added for the black version), on the side panels and the hood, I added painted details in silver, golden, black and metallic red.

The mold of the windows (tinted in blue and smoked respectively) included the front grille, while the mold of the interiors (in black and silver respectively) included the tail fascia and it works nicely for the smoked windows, but for the blue ones the effect is weird and not so appealing, nonetheless it was a good touch in general; the selection for the plastic wheels was Muscle Car 5 Spokes rims design, with chrome lip for both versions and they were made in Malaysia...

Act 16:37-40 "But Paul said unto them: They have beaten us openly uncondemned, being Romans, and have cast us into prison; and now do they thrust us out privily? nay verily; but let them come themselves and fetch us out. And the sergeants told these words unto the magistrates: and they feared, when they heard that they were Romans. And they came and besought them, and brought them out, and desired them to depart out of the city. And they went out of the prison, and entered into the house of Lydia: and when they had seen the brethren, they comforted them, and departed."
