2001 Ford Focus RS WRC 01 4WD Rally Racing Car - Compact 2-Doors 2+2 Hatchback Coupe / Sports Car - World Rally Car - (69th / 69ème) 2001 Rally Monte Carlo - Telefónica / Movistar / Ford World Rally Team - # 4 (Colin McRae / Scotland - Nicky Grist / Wales - Monte Carlo - Not Finished / Retired) 2008 1:64 Rally Car Collection Series Diecast Scale 1:64 by CM’s Corporation

While an important number of the most recognized automotive brands worldwide have been involved directly or indirectly with motorsports and understand the benefits derived from their participation in this kind of events, this participation is not so consistent through time in some cases...

Motorsports are more than anything commercial showcases, advertising / marketing platforms: victories or first places in these competitions increase sales perceptibly and yeah, they allow to test engineering and performance improvements, but actually the core of this business is making money and deliver entertainment (in case you want to find out what I think about entertainment, check out here)...

If you know a little bit about advertising and/or marketing, then you’re aware that they require monstrous budgets, sometimes the investment is justified, sometimes not, sometimes the budget is an issue, sometimes not and it’s money or its lack thereof, what really decides the participation of a car manufacturer in any of the disciplines of motorsports.

Now, it seems that the upper management and the marketing department of Ford Motor Company, were not too interested in investing in rally racing at the end of the last century and the reason for that was not precisely a budget shortage: it was the overall performance of the previous generation of rally cars developed by the brand of the blue oval, what they were not very satisfied with.

Yet, it seems that someone made them see reason and somehow it was given green light to the development of the, for the time, new contender in the battles of rally racing, of which my guest for this publication is one of its iterations: the 2001 Ford Focus RS WRC 01 4WD Rally Racing Car, a Compact 2-Doors 2+2 Hatchback Coupe / Sports Car, that meets the regulations for the World Rally Car (WRC) specification.

This is neither more nor less than the successor of the venerable Ford Escort, a racing car that was representing Ford at the World Rally Championship since the very beginning in 1978 and it was about time to find replacement for a model that was already showing its age, in a competition that is in constant development.

Ford Europe and M-Sport (run by Malcom Wilson, with Günther Steiner as Technical Manager) were in charge of the development of this car for the Ford World Rally Team, a hasty process I must say, since the approval of the project C170 (as it was codenamed) was given in 1998 and the vehicle had to be ready for tests in late 1999.

It was based on the Focus, a compact family car, like many of the contenders in this competition: compact or sub-compact cars were the option to consider since the WRC specification was introduced, or even before, because it helped to reduce costs associated with development, maintenance, repair and competition; besides, this typology of vehicles has been strong in sales for quite a while worldwide.

The Focus RS WRC was campaigned between 1999 and 2010, a lot of engineering was applied to increase the body shell stiffness (specially for torsional rigidity), which dramatically improves road holding abilities, so much that it was perceived by its drivers as "underpowered", even more when it was heavier than its competitors.

It virtually shares no parts with its predeccessor or its street counterpart and that’s a trait of WRC vehicles, as well as for contemporary racing cars in general, but probably what makes more memorable this rally vehicle is the fact that is was driven by the Scotish legend of rally racing: Colin McRae, who passed away in September 15th, 2007, in an unfortunate helicopter accident...

Until now, my efforts to find a good source of information about CM’s Corporation (シーエムズコーポレーショ) have been fruitless and it has been kinda frustrating because I like to know the background of the items in my collection, which includes, of course, the history of the manufacturer...

So far, what I have found is that the company was founded in 2003 by Takahiro Miyazaki, former employee of what we know currently as Takara Tomy A.R.T.S. Co., and Hideki Nakabachi, representative of an affiliate company; the latter died in 2009 and Miyazaki resigned as president later the same year, being replaced by his wife, Kasuko.

It was headquartered in Nishi-Kanda, a district of Chiyoda, Tokyo, Japan and I mentioned in a previous review, of which you can read here, that CM’s Corporation filled for bankruptcy in 2014 and that it had several lines of collectibles (a little bit more information about it here).

But I found as well that this company had a debt of 400 million yens, due to tight cash flow and much of the problem that led to this situation had to do with the overall quality control of its products.

The collectors’ community in Japan in general terms, is much more mature (this hobby is taken seriously there) and demanding regarding the quality of collectibles, than what you see in other communities of collectors around the world, that’s why some companies that would be considered a good option for collectibles in other regions, do not survive for a long time in the Japanese market.

However, I wouldn’t dare to say that CM’s Corporation was a mediocre company in the business of collectibles and I’m afraid that most Japanese collectors, who knew this brand first hand, would agree in that sense; in fact, as time goes by, its products receive more and more appreciation, because along with their quality issues, they have some noticeable strengths in certain aspects and some products are really outstanding by the time they were released originally...

More on this topic in future publications (I hope so), now let’s focus on my guest, which I got in the secondary market, with the help of a friend of mine, fellow collector and importer, pretty much 5 years ago; it belongs to the 2008 1:64 Rally Car Collection Series and you can notice by the presentation in window box, that is a product designed for the international market, albeit it’s far from easy to find outside Japan.

Obviously, it’s an item from the Premium category, with a superior level of quality, detail, accuracy, proportions, etc., comparable with what you can find in the Kyosho Beads upmarket line for example and currently, diecast models brands offering a product with similar features are Inno64 and Tarmac.

The selection of the model is somewhat curious, because the car didn’t finish the 2001 Monte Carlo race in which it participated, due to mechanical issues, but I’m pretty sure that the daredevil reputation of Colin McRae was more than enough to justify the inclusion of this rally car in the CM’s catalog, saving some money in licensing.

It has diecast body and plastic chassis in black, with silver paint for a protection panel in front; the paint job in white and racing decoration are incredibly accurate regarding the actual car, there are extensive tampos and/or decals all over the body panels and windows, as well as a plastic insert for rear spoiler, plus two detachable antennas and the left side rearview mirror was molded with the body.

The interiors were fairly detailed as you can expect from CM’s and include the safety cage, the wheels are multipart, reproducing the OZ Racing Magnesium Rally Wheels (18 Spokes) rims design in white and styled synthetic rubber tires, it includes a nice black display base with the name of the model printed in silver, glossy finishing, acrylic clear cover and it was made in China...

Ezk 32:11-16 "For thus saith the LORD GOD: The sword of the king of Babylon shall come upon thee. By the swords of the mighty will I cause thy multitude to fall, the terrible of the nations, all of them: and they shall spoil the pomp of Egypt, and all the multitude thereof shall be destroyed. I will destroy also all the beasts thereof from beside the great waters; neither shall the foot of man trouble them any more, nor the hooves of beasts trouble them. Then will I make their waters deep, and cause their rivers to run like oil, saith the LORD GOD. When I shall make the land of Egypt desolate, and the country shall be destitute of that whereof it was full, when I shall smite all them that dwell therein, then shall they know that I am the LORD. This is the lamentation wherewith they shall lament her: the daughters of the nations shall lament her: they shall lament for her, even for Egypt, and for all her multitude, saith the LORD GOD."

2007 Citröen C4 WRC Rally Racing Car - Compact 2-Doors 2+2 Hatchback Coupe - World Rally Car - (28th / 28º) 2008 Rally Argentina - Citroën Total World Rally Racing Team - # 1 (Sébastien Loeb / France - Daniel Elena / Monaco 1st Place) 2008 1:64 Rally Car Collection Series Diecast Scale 1:64 by CM’s Corporation

There are car brands that have had great exposure in the automotive market, due to their large production and sales figures, for which they are more widely known and then, there are those car brands whose impact in the global sales or their reputation is much less known...

To the latter group belongs the company I’m introducing for this publication: Citröen, a French automaker currently part of the PSA Peugeot Citröen Group (since 1976), founded in 1919 by André-Gustave Citröen and what some people would call an "obscure" or little known brand in this segment...

Now, perhaps in some countries Citröen or any other French car manufacturer for that matter, are not precisely familiar, but in my homeland, Colombia and other markets of South America, the brand of the dual chevron has had presence for a long time.

It’s known that the first Citröen car arrived to the Colombian market in the late 20s of the last century (a Type B2) and then a few units of the Traction Avant, the first front-wheel drive mass-produced car, released in 1934, arrived in the late 30s, some of them are still very well preserved and in running condition, which let them grace our streets once in a while.

Maybe in a future review I will deepen a bit more on the history of Citröen in my homeland, but for now I will focus in a particular product of this French brand, characterized by constant innovation, also an emphasis on the quirky and technologically advanced design of its cars.

My guest for this publication: the 2007 Citröen C4 WRC Rally Racing Car, is a Compact 2-Doors 2+2 Hatchback Coupe belonging to the World Rally Car category, based on the Citröen C4, a model offered between 2004 and 2010, which is currently in its second generation, but more precisely in the 2007 C4 Citröen Sport Concept Car (a project that actually disregarded some FIA regulations).

The C4 was developed to be a car attractive for a wider base of customers, featuring a more conventional and rounded design in the 5-Door Hatchback and a bolder, angular design for the 3-Door Coupe, that while shared the front fascia, were very different at the rear: we should bear in mind that this model was in the same league of the Volkswagen Golf.

The C4 WRC, on the other hand, was developed with the clear purpose of replacing the successful Citröen Xsara WRC, used between 2001 and 2006, which it did quite well, thanks to the combination of a longer body (which adds better stability on bends), its steel monocoque chassis (for more stiffness) and obviously its 121 c.i., 1.98 L, PSA XU7JP4 4 Inline turbocharged engine, rated at 315 hp.

My guest was the winner of the (28th) 2008 Rally Argentina, for the Citroën Total World Rally Racing Team, the # 1 was driven by Sébastien Loeb and Daniel Elena was co-driver; the model was reaping victories since 2007 to 2010 (or even until 2015 in the hands of privateers -private racing teams-) in the drivers’ and manufacturers’ World Rally Championship!...

Some collectibles are meant to last longer than the companies that designed, developed and offered them, that’s always something sad to hear for collectors, but specially with brands that created products worthy of being called adult collectibles, with Premium quality and not just toys (without demerit the latter, but being fully aware of their limitations)...

I mean, as collector (and as designer also, in my particular case), you can perceive the love involved in the design of certain toys, but adult collectibles involve an extra dose of that love, adding attention to realism, detail and superb quality, to deliver a product that is the closest approximation to the real thing and much more rewarding as a whole for an adult, than toys...

CM’s Corporation is definitely one of those cases and one of which you will not hear so often, because it filled for bankruptcy in 2014, but more importantly, because this brand used to produce its collectibles, including diecast models, in limited editions and more specifically for the Japanese market, for which they are rather hard to find nowadays...

And not like the excessively common and hyped Super Treasure Hunts line of "diecast" (with increasingly more plastic) toy models made by Hot Wheels, whose shortage is fake because it’s caused by hoarders / scalpers, NO, I mean genuinely hard to find.

As usual for my collection, I got this magnificent scale replica in the secondary market, with the help of a friend of mine, fellow collector and importer, more than 3 years ago; it belongs to the 2008 1:64 Rally Car Collection Series and as I mentioned in a previous review, it was one of the latest lines offered before the extinction of CM’s.

The presentation for this item is window box, which let’s you see this product of the Premium category, we should remember that for older models the presentation was blind box and that’s a common place in Japan, but not in collectibles for international markets.

It has diecast body and plastic chassis in black, with silver paint for part of the exhaust system; the paint job and racing decoration are completely faithful to the actual car, there are extensive tampos and/or decals all over the body panels and windows, as well as plastic inserts for the front, tail lights and rear wing, plus three detachable antennas and the side rearview mirrors were molded with the body.

All in all, there is an impressive commitment to quality that you don’t see so often and these models were developed more than 10 years ago; it looks like some diecast brands still have a lot to learn from CM’s!

The interiors were finely molded and include the safety cage, the wheels are multipart, reproducing the OZ Racing 15 Spoke rims design in white and styled rubber tires, it includes a nice black display base with the name of the model printed in silver, glossy finishing, acrylic clear cover and it was made in China...

Ezk 20:30-39 "Wherefore say unto the house of Israel, thus saith the LORD GOD: are ye polluted after the manner of your fathers? and commit ye whoredom after their abominations? For when ye offer your gifts, when ye make your sons to pass through the fire, ye pollute yourselves with all your idols, even unto this day: and shall I be inquired of by you, O house of Israel? As I live, saith the LORD GOD, I will not be inquired of by you. And that which cometh into your mind shall not be at all, that ye say: we will be as the heathen, as the families of the countries, to serve wood and stone. As I live, saith the LORD GOD, surely with a mighty hand, and with a stretched out arm, and with fury poured out, will I rule over you: and I will bring you out from the people, and will gather you out of the countries wherein ye are scattered, with a mighty hand, and with a stretched out arm, and with fury poured out. And I will bring you into the wilderness of the people, and there will I plead with you face to face. Like as I pleaded with your fathers in the wilderness of the land of Egypt, so will I plead with you, saith the LORD GOD. And I will cause you to pass under the rod, and I will bring you into the bond of the covenant: and I will purge out from among you the rebels, and them that transgress against me: I will bring them forth out of the country where they sojourn, and they shall not enter into the land of Israel: and ye shall know that I am the LORD. As for you, O house of Israel, thus saith the LORD GOD: go ye, serve ye every one his idols, and hereafter also, if ye will not hearken unto me: but pollute ye my holy name no more with your gifts, and with your idols."
