2004 Ferrari 612 Scaglietti 2-Door 2+2 Berlinetta (Coupe) Gran Tourer (612 Scaglietti) 2008 Ferrari Racer Series -Code N5556- 13/24 Diecast Scale 1:68 by Hot Wheels

If you ask ordinary people, what’s the element for them that truly defines a car (because anybody can answer such a question, seemingly), they will tell you a lot of things...

The answers will be ranging from: "the front grille", "its engine", "the chassis", "the interiors", "its trunk", "the line of the roof", "its sound", "the dashboard", "the fenders", "its wheels", and so on...

But if you ask the same question to a designer and more specifically to an automotive designer, the most likely answer will be: the bodywork...

It’s so obvious and simple that it hurts, but it’s indeed the most comprehensive answer you could give to a question like this and it was even truer in the times when Computer Assisted Design (CAD) wasn’t even a fantasy; times when the idea of "one model for each and every single market" was something far fetched, bizarre...

The first lines in the sketch of a vehicle are dedicated to the body and it’s no wonder, it’s the skin of a car, a sensory element that enters your eyes and automotive designers can somehow "touch" a project in their mind, with the help of those lines, without even create a 3D model.

However, there are also designers who were not recognized as such at the time and who didn’t need a sketch in a piece of paper to begin their creations; they went directly to the raw materials, either wood or steel or aluminum, and they started to sculpt shapes.

Sergio Scaglietti was one of those designers of the old school, who were known just as coachbuilders, a more humble designation that actually carries the same meaning, an empirical designer if you will, but someone talented, gifted.

Scaglietti didn’t have an academic background, like many of his local and worldwide contemporaries, let’s mention: Battista Pininfarina, Giuseppe Bertone, Marcello Gandini, Giovanni Savonuzzi, Giorgetto Guigiaro, Harley Earl, Ettore Bugatti, Virgil Exner, Gordon Buehrig, among others, but his work is amazing!...

The model introduced today is an appropriate homage to this artisan, designer, artist, stylist, whatever you wanna call him: the 2004 Ferrari 612 Scaglietti 2-Door 2+2 Berlinetta (Coupe) Gran Tourer.

This vehicle that was produced between 2004 and 2011, was the flagship of Ferrari at that time, a car relatively "massive" (bearing in mind the usual proportions of Ferraris), that could carry 4 people with a decent level of comfort.

The 612 Scaglietti was created for someone wealthy, who wants to travel with some company, experiencing luxury and sporty performance in a single package; it was designed by Pininfarina, who borrowed several design cues from his now deceased colleague, used in the Ferrari 375 MM (a model commisioned by Roberto Rossellini for his wife: Ingrid Bergman), but with a modern reinterpretation.

The heart of this flagship was a 351 cu in, 5.7 L, Tipo F133 F&H V12 petrol engine, rated at 532 hp, coupled to a 6-speed manual transmission and it turns out to be a great iron, but one that wouldn’t make Enzo’s blood boil, at least not in the good sense of the word...

You know, when I look for a diecast model any day and honestly I’m increasingly less interested in such quest, not because I don’t like this kind of collectibles, but because it’s increasingly more tiring and complicated to get them, due to issues I have been mentioning some time ago, the last car brand that cross my mind at that moment is Ferrari...

While other collectors are eagerly hunting them any time they pop-up in trade groups or in other sales publications, models from other car manufacturers draw more powerfully my attention and this could be interpreted as a complete indifference on my part regarding the brand of the "cavallino rampante".

Well, that’s not necessarily true, while Ferrari is not my all time favorite car brand, I do admire most than anything the exterior design of those beasts, just because they were conceived by illustrious designers, with an exquisite taste in most cases.

Nonetheless, when it comes to diecast models in small scales and specially in the case of Hot Wheels, which currently ceased its license agreement with Ferrari, I avoid frequent purchases of these models since there is a wide network of hoarders / scalpers around them, who keep raising prices without rhyme or reason and seriously, I will not waste my money on absurdly overpriced items.

That’s why there are very few in my collection, but this addition is very, very special, because it was another gift from a generous friend and fellow collector from Singapore, and it was an excellent selection on his part!...

This replica is in fact the first release of the 612 Scaglietti and the most appealing of all releases in my humble opinion, a model that had very few iterations, barely six, 3 for Regular lines and 3 for Adult lines; it’s a pity because the model has a good level of detail, it’s very nice as a whole, you can see the satisfying work of a designer who, as usual with Ferrari models, is not mentioned.

It belongs to the Ferrari Racer Series, an Adult line that was offered by Toys R Us (a distributor with higher prices than others like Target, Wal-Mart or K-Mart) in United States and overseas markets, with very little success in its time, but nowadays it has reached scandalous prices, specially in the american market.

The model has diecast body and black plastic chassis, the body received gunmetal gray paint job with Metalflake finishing (I love dark colors), complemented by tampos and/or decals on the front grille, panoramic roof, front side panels, rear lights and plate, also a pair of Ferrari emblems on the tail (I added light silver paint for the front lights and they look much better).

It has smoked windows that fit the model like a glove, while the interiors were worked in light brown with a decent level of detail; the multipart plastic wheels feature the wonderful Co-Molded 6 Spoke rims design in silver, the bonus is a small sticker printed in color with an illustration of the 612 Scaglietti and it was made in Malaysia...

Mat 24:3-8 "And as HE sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto HIM privately, saying: tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world? And JESUS answered and said unto them: take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in my name, saying: I am Christ; and shall deceive many. And ye shall hear of wars and rumors of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. All these are the beginning of sorrows."

2010 Ferrari 599XX 2-Door Grand Tourer Berlinetta (Coupe) / Sports Car Track-Circuit Only Use (Ferrari 599XX) 2015 HW Workshop - Thrill Racers (Treasure Hunts) Series 188/250 Diecast Scale 1:67 by Hot Wheels

It would be interesting to figure out what would be crossing the mind of Enzo Ferrari at this very moment (if he were alive), looking at what his brand and his company has become...

Of course, this is just a hypothetical exercise, but there is an acquis of information about the life of "il commendatore" available and even more eloquent than that, there is an acquis of cars that let you speculate with certain degree of truthfulness about it...

So, would he like the cars that bear his name, produced currently?...

Well, I have found in different sources and it’s well known by the loyal fanatics of the brand of the "cavallino rampante", that Enzo barely tolerated the manufacturing of street cars in his atelier.

I guess that some trusted employees, external collaborators, relatives and friends, tried in vane to convince him, not only about the transcendence of this kind of models for his company, but also about the special charm of a vehicle created for people who are not professional pilots, but who are speed lovers.

To some extend it’s understandable for a sttuborn guy who had his beginnings in his own Scuderia (racing team), working firstly for Alfa-Romeo...

It was his initial call, what else you could expect?...

Perhaps I’m wrong, but I can’t see Enzo Ferrari as a business man, he just didn’t have what it takes to play that role.

However, what I do have to admit (keeping in mind that "il commendatore" is not a guy of my affections, because of his arrogant personality), is that he was a man of racing and he lived up for that...

Then, what would be his reaction in front of a today’s Ferrari?...

Believe or not, Enzo would be disappointed...

Let’s say that the only major participation of Ferrari in the world of highborn races, is in the Formula 1, but, for instance, Le Mans is a place that has not been stepped on by a Ferrari for quite some time, as it used to be and the main line of business for his company are... Yeah, you got it: street cars...

Yet, maybe the opinion of Enzo regarding the guest of this publication, namely, the 2010 Ferrari 599XX 2-Door Grand Tourer Berlinetta (Coupe) / Sports Car, would not be so unfavorable.

While this car was born as a Grand Tourer, that is to say a street car, the 599XX variant is a car intended for the use in tracks / circuits only and hence, it’s not street legal.

The car certainly looks meaner that its street counterpart and just like any other track ready machine, it was stripped down in the passengers compartment, not to mention the several changes in the panels of the body, to improve notoriously aerodynamics and it’s accompanied by an impressive powerplant: a 366 cu in, 6.0 L, F-140 CF V12 engine, rated at 730 hp and coupled to a 6-speed F1 automated manual transmission...

Nevertheless, what I don’t get so excited about is the design of the front, with those bug-like headlights; they just bug me and the successor, the F12berlinetta, has not managed to fix this inconsistency in terms of styling; in the end, Ferrari has been all about a particular italian beauty, isn’t that so?...

It looks like Hot Wheels tried to squeeze the revenues of its license agreement with Ferrari, while it was in force, until the end and since there is a critical mass of collectors interested in this car manufacturer, it makes sense, no doubt...

Now, this fact has been harnessed by hoarders and escalpers in order to raise prices inordinately and artificially, as I explained in this publication and that was to be expected, since the two elements necessary for this to happen are present: foolish buyers (or useful idiots, being precise) and unscrupulous sellers...

I’m not planning to become popular for saying these truths that few want to hear and actually I don’t care if this bothers certain "collectors" or "sellers"; after all, I have already been insulted by some of these coarse and misfit individuals, and I wasn’t expecting anything else from them so, I will spill some more "poison" on this matter every now and then, just because I’m convinced that ethics and common sense don’t quarrel with the good collectionism...

At all events, I’m not afraid to offend any honest and sensible collector (or honest and sensible seller, if I were on that side of the hobby), just because I’m one of them and maybe it sounds pretentious, but facts speak louder than words and here you have my blog and my collection, a reflection of my way of thinking...

I’m introducing a Ferrari 599XX that while is not the most beautiful stallion, it’s a really outstanding cast by Hot Wheels, one that was skillfully scaled down by an unknown designer, with a very good level of detail (except in the interiors, as always).

It has been 10 times in Regular and Adult lines, intermittently (2010, 2012 and 2015) and curiously, it has been featured in the Treasure Hunts Series 2 times; I got mine through the regular channels of distribution (a department store) and hence, I paid the regular price at that time, which is not a fair price, but it’s not too expensive either.

Obviously, you can check the prices of the Super / Hidden version of this model, ranging easily from US$40 to US$100 or more (without shipping rates) and you know what I think about people daring to pay that much for such model?...

SIMPLE, they are paying between US$39 and US$99 (or more) extra for those items, just for fun (or ignorance or whatever, but not for something sensible... Speaking about useful idiots...) and I will explain more profusely why I say so, in future publications...

My guest belongs to the HW Workshop - Thrill Racer (Treasure Hunts Regular) Series; it has diecast body and black plastic chassis; the paint job was made in dark gray with Metalflake finishing, complemented by a decoration of racing stripes on the hood and side panels, where a Ferrari emblem was also included, as well as tampos for the front lights (they could have thrown off some additional tampos, no?).

The windows are smoked, while the interiors are black; it has plastic wheels featuring Phil Riehlman 5 Spoke rims design, with chrome red contour and it was made in Malaysia...

Mat 8:5-13 "And when JESUS was entered into Capernaum, there came unto Him a centurion, beseeching Him, and saying: Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, grievously tormented. And JESUS saith unto him: I will come and heal him. The centurion answered and said: Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed. For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man: go, and he goeth; and to another: come, and he cometh; and to my servant: do this, and he doeth it. When JESUS heard it, he marveled, and said to them that followed: verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. And I say unto you: that many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven. But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. And Jesus said unto the centurion: go thy way; and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee. And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour."

2013 Ferrari LaFerrari (F150) 2-Door Berlinetta Mildly Hybrid Hyper Sports Car 2014 HW City - Speed Team Series 38/250 Diecast Scale 1:66 by Hot Wheels

It was 1999, when the twentieth century was coming to an end, that Horacio Pagani introduced to the world his first brainchild: the Pagani Zonda C12 at the Geneva Motor Show and he shook the exotics car segment not only with a new car, but with a whole new category of beasts...

His creation was so groundbreaking, that he felt (I guess) a sort of severe digestive disorder, when someone (wretched and prosaic) decided to qualify his development as a Super Car or Super Sports Car...

It was too boorish for the taste of Pagani, so it was determined to coin a new term for his Zonda: Hypercar or Hyper Sports Car...

A term so bombastic results for me ludicrous, but I’m aware of the superiority complex suffered by most of the italian (or pseudo-italian) manufacturers of exotic sports cars; exception made in the case of Ferruccio Lamborghini, who was able to challenge Enzo Ferrari in his own territory, being a tractor builder.

Ever since, this segment has been progressively populated by other brands, some very well known like: Porsche, McLaren, Lamborghini, Ferrari, Bugatti and others more "clandestine" like: Apollo, Koenigsegg, Zenvo, Mazzanti, Spania, Hennessey, Callaway, W Motors, Laraki, Devel, Marussia, Glickenhaus, Arash, SSC, Saleen, Jaguar, Aston Martin and the list continues.

The first entrance to this exclusive and conceited world of Hypercars by Ferrari was what I would consider a big misstep: the controversial Ferrari Enzo...

To say that the Enzo is a beautiful car, is to mock on the meaning of this term in any existing language, as well as to say that it was a small blemish in the record of Ferrari, because if this car brand were only about performance, Enzo would have decided to close his factory long ago, for his own sake.

Ignoring any compliment that Ferrari (obviously biased) fanatics would make in favor of the Enzo, for it’s pointless to argue about something so evident, for me is clear that Ferrari was in debt with car enthusiast and automotive industry equally and it took some time for this brand to do things the right way.

The 2013 Ferrari LaFerrari (F150) 2-Door Berlinetta was the result of years of research and development, in a seemingly long term program of the company for present and future releases.

Part of this program is the Ferrari FXX, a race car and prototype based on the Enzo, whose owners were only allowed to drive them on special track days, previously approved by Ferrari.

If you take a look to the Ferrari FXX Evoluzione, you will find a clear resemblance with the LaFerrari and it couldn’t be otherwise, since there is a direct lineage that starts with the 250 GT SWB, continues with the 250 GTO, the 288 GTO, the F40, the F50 and ends with the Enzo itself.

Then, the LaFerrari has racing car DNA, but in the practice is way more forgiving in terms of driving and well, while Ferrari could make a car for professional race drivers, the goal here was a car enjoyable for the "average Joe" (considering that no average Joe has US$1,420,112 -its list price- to spare in normal conditions).

When this beast was freed by Ferrari, what most specialized journalists noticed and criticized was the name: LaFerrari, that in words of the creators meant the "ultimate Ferrari", but in the ears of these journalists sounded laughably self-referential.

What they expected from a Hypercar other than a Hypername, even if it sounds Hyperegocentric, Hypersnob or Hyperstupid? HUH?...

What is not laughable is the design, that this time was developed in-house, not with the usual collaboration of Pininfarina and it’s absolutely superb (albeit I still prefer the Lamborghini Veneno in that sense =PPPPP), as well as its enviable performance, thanks to a combination of active and passive aerodynamics, a formidable chassis and a 382 cu in, 6.3 L, V12 engine, coupled to a AC permanent magnet synchronous electric motor (called HY-KERS System), producing a total of 950 hp, with a top speed of 218 mph!...

The absence of Ferrari in the portfolio of Hot Wheels since 2015, apparently, leaves a big hole, hard to fill and for this reason, there was concern among some collectors and "opinion leaders" of this hobby, so much that there were speculations about a "forced" change in the approach for future releases of the blue brand of Mattel.

After an exclusive and very profitable license agreement of 15 years between these brands and with the undeniable popularity of Ferrari around the world, you could claim that it was a great loss for Mattel, but I have a very different opinion about this matter...

Firstly, Ferrari is just one among dozens of licenses paid by Hot Wheels and just like in the real world: if Ferrari disappears, the world will not come to an end; after almost 2 years, HW continues in the business and it’s still attractive for many, the cavallino rampante is NOT the center of the universe, by the way...

In second instance, what collectors of this brand should worry about is the increasing use of plastic, replacing diecast parts and the quality control in finishes for the mainline, that includes the so vaunted Treasure Hunts, which goes into freefall, while the prices are rising...

And if these people want to worry about something else, well, the hoarders and scalpers have taken careful note of the end of the license agreement between Hot Wheels and Ferrari so, they will charge you a fortune if you want to play the role of idiot before them and you allow it...

Fortunately, all those worries don’t mean anything for me and you could say that I’m indolent with the "collectors affected" by this situation, but if more people in this guild were more coherent and freethinker, so that they will not be manipulated, this hobby would be more pleasurable for all of us...

Now, regarding the item introduced in this publication, I got this nice model by myself, through the regular channels of distribution, when the respective batch was available; I should visit several retail stores before finding it, I didn’t want the red one (the first release) since as I could check, it had several issues with paint and tampos finishes, but it was worth: I didn’t pay a single cent more of the regular value...

It was surprising to know that the designer involved in the development of this cast was Phil Riehlman, but after looking at the quality in the rendition (that others consider poor), it made sense for me; since it was released in 2014, for the HW City - Speed Team Series, only two versions were made.

It has diecast body and black plastic chassis; the paint job was made in silver with Metalflake finishing, somehow, this paint covers better the surface and lets you see the details, unlike the red of the other version that was applied in thicker layers; there are tampos and/or decals for the head lights and a pair of Ferrari emblems.

The windows and the roof are a single piece, smoked, the interiors were worked in black, with the average level of detail of the regular lines; the plastic wheels feature Phil Riehlman 5 Spoke rims design in chrome and it was made in Malaysia...

Mat 1:18-23 "Now the birth of JESUS CHRIST was on this wise: when as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily. But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a dream, saying: Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife; for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call His Name JESUS: for HE shall save His people from their sins. Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the LORD by the prophet, saying: behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call His Name EMMANUEL, which being interpreted is, GOD with us."
