2001 Toyota RSC Concept Car - Compact 2-Door 2+2 Light Sport Off-Road Coupe / Compact Sport SUV - Collector 039 2002 HW First Editions Series 27/42 - 39/240 Diecast Scale 1:61 by Hot Wheels

Companies in all economic segments, particularly the largest ones, are looking for increasingly younger buyers for their products and services: this in order to use the oversized infrastructure, that they have been building since the Industrial Revolution came to change, "a bit" forcibly, the economic paradigm worldwide...

From the second half of the 18th century onwards, when the industry as a whole was born, a race to produce goods and services massively, has been witnessed by several generations, which in turn has been feeding the machinery of consumerism, that currently we see in full force and there has been as result an excess in the offer, that the demand cannot absorb, then, to reach new markets and younger buyers have become a "necessity" or rather an obligation imposed in a contrived way...

Toyota Motor Corporation, a multinational company that arose from a manufacturer of automatic looms (as I mentioned here), is not alien to this trend and it has been exploring ideas to reach these younger customers, in an effort to cultivate the buyers of tomorrow, through a series of concept cars that it has developed since the beginning of the present century.

One of them is my guest for this publication: the 2001 Toyota RSC Concept Car, a Compact 2-Door 2+2 Light Sport Off-Road Coupe / Compact Sport SUV, that used the platform of the Toyota RAV4 as basis, to create a Rugged Sports Coupe (that’s what RSC stands for), which was introduced in the 2001 Chicago Auto Show.

The RSC was developed at the facilities of CALTY Design Research, the design center of Toyota in New Port Beach, California, obviously with the North American market in mind mainly, but you can judge by the outcome, that this vehicle would work in global markets without issues.

The style was inspired heavily on a T1 Dakar Rally Car, a vehicle with extreme modifications, developed specifically for competition, taking as basis a tubular structure on which mechanical and safety components are mounted and covered by a fiberglass or a carbon fiber body, that is really far from resembling a production car.

This Toyota RSC looks menacing and flashy, probably will not be the cup of coffee for everyone, because the panels of the body do not fit smoothly, but rather aggressively, in layers that add burlyness to the design, almost like a combat vehicle, but there was agreement among the off-road vehicles enthusiasts, specialized journalists and people who love cars in general, that it would have been a big hit in the market.

I mean, even nowadays it would be a great success, but it was never meant to reach production...

Pretty much 8 months ago, with a review you can read here, I started a series of publications where the conductive thread has been basically toy cars developed by the blue brand of Mattel in the past and I called it "the old good times of Hot Wheels, a brand that used to make good toy cars", you can also read other reviews focused on this topic here, here and here...

When I lost interest in recent products by the brand of the flaming logo, somehow I found a new interest in its older products and they also allow me to make a comparison with what HW has been offering lately...

The result of this comparison is that most times, while there are some interesting items in the current offer and there have been some improvements in certain aspects, older products are still better in aspects that I as collector and designer, consider critical and probably other collectors will agree with me in that sense.

That’s why I’m introducing every now and then, samples of these marvels of the past, in the form of toy cars and I try to explain why I consider them better than their recent counterparts; after all, I’m not precisely a supporter of one of the mantras of our times: "newer is better, just because"...

This time I’m featuring a mold developed by Mark Jones, a veteran designer who has been working for the blue brand of Mattel since 1986, so he can be considered part of the Old School; in fact, I have introduced in my blog several toy cars designed by him, which I guess shows my admiration for his work.

I got this item through the secondary market, with the help of a friend of mine, fellow collector and importer / private seller, pretty much 10 years ago; this is the debut of the model, it has had at least 14 iterations, one of them for the 2003 Highway 35 World Race: Dune Ratz Series, a line from the Adult category and the rest for lines of the Regular category (Mainline).

The first positive thing I have to say about it is its selection itself: sponsored brand promoters are flattering ad nauseam how Hot Wheels is bringing to its lineup vehicles out of the mainstream, but thanks mainly to the initiative of designers, these unusual selections have been present in the offer of this brand since a while ago and I definitely support that.

The Toyota RSC is not the kind of model that a company interested in big sales, like Mattel, would consider for production, but there you have it and it’s not the only thing I appreciate about it: the actual car was very well represented, the mold has a very good level of detail for a toy car; it offers diecast body and plastic chassis in black, the dose of diecast is appropriate, although it can improve.

Since this is the debut model, the paint job in silver with glossy finishing mimics nicely that of the actual vehicle, it’s complemented by a simple but neat decoration, on the hood and side panels, with tampos and decals in black, white and orange; nowadays it would be made with inkjet printing, the result would be subpar and it would shout CHEAP AND COARSE!...

The interiors were worked in silver, with a basic level of detail; the mold for the smoked windows included also the front lights and that’s the kind of details I like the most, the mold of the chassis included the front grille and air deflector, but it differs from the actual car, where the latter is in the body color.

Other feature I really appreciate in this toy car, is that instead of an awful and huge stem for the rear rivet, the chassis has a flange that inserts into a hole in the rear of the body, I mean, that’s the way it should always be; the plastic wheels selection for this model, with Off-Road 5 Spokes rims design, featuring chrome finishing, is similar to the intricate design for the actual vehicle and it was made in Malaysia...

Act 20:29-34 "For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them. Therefore watch, and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears. And now, brethren, I commend you to GOD, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified. I have coveted no man's silver, or gold, or apparel."

2010 Toyota Tundra II 4WD Double Cab Standard Bed (6.6 ft.) - Full Size 1/2 Ton Class 2A Light Duty 4-Doors 2+2 Pickup Truck - (’10 Toyota Tundra) 2016 Hot Wheels Hot Trucks Series 5-Pack Plastcast Scale 1:75 by Hot Wheels

ENGLISH
That the market of United States is one of the most important worldwide, if not the most important, is indisputable and it’s no wonder, after all, this country alone has one of the highest rate of vehicles per household, with a bit more than 91% having access to at least one vehicle...

Yet, they are surpassed by other "developed" countries like: Italy, Germany, France, Spain, Japan, United Kingdom, Belgium in the rate already mentioned, even so the impact of the North American market in the global sales figures, is enough to make it a "trendsetter" in this economic activity...

Several important car brands have been working consistently to develop products with the market of United States as target, products that in normal circumstances are not so well received in other markets, so it’s a bet that carries significant risks for them.

But it looks like these car manufacturers are willing to take that risk, because somehow the dividends justify it and one of those companies is precisely Toyota, which is in the list of the largest manufacturers, proof that they take seriously the demand in U.S.

My guest, of course, is one of its development for that market: the 2010 Toyota Tundra II 4WD Double Cab Standard Bed (6.6 ft.), a Full Size 1/2 Ton Class 2A Light Duty 4-Doors 2+2 Pickup Truck, that is part of the second generation of the model.

Full size pickup trucks, particularly the recent ones and by recent I mean from 90s onwards, have been growing substantially, largely due to the increase in use of plastic and its derivatives in their construction, which has allowed to add size, without adding too much weight.

For that very reason, its significant size, this kind of pickups just wouldn’t work in the Japanese market, the place of origin of Toyota, where compact, subcompact and even micro cars are the norm, more over, you will find a similar situation in European countries.

In my homeland, Colombia, South America, a country where pickup trucks are a thriving segment, the full size ones are not sold so often or offered as part of the "official" portfolio of brands like: Ford, Chevrolet, Honda, Nissan, Toyota, RAM, etc.

This happens mainly because of their towering prices after taxes in the local market, which virtually duplicate its value, regarding their reference price in the main markets around the world: they are considered here as luxury vehicles, not workhorses as its nature makes it evident.

Now, all countries have their own battery of taxes for imported vehicles and goods, which up to a point is understandable and I emphasize up to a point, because a large slice of those resources go to fund corruption everywhere: make no mistake thinking otherwise, in "developed" countries (that’s why I used developed in quotes), corruption has remained crouched, but after the "pandemic", people from these countries are witnessing the level of corruption of their "rulers" face to face...

However, here in my homeland is simply unacceptable, because our "rulers" are a peat of corrupt officials (literally a mafia), condoned by a crooked judicial system and both are lackeys of the financial system, of several multinational companies that seek to plunder resources worldwide and of the local and international drug trafficking cartels, as it has been denounced repeatedly by the independent journalism, the only one with credibility.

As it could be supposed, most of the money collected through taxes goes to enrich this herd of parasites and very little goes to meet the needs of taxpayers, to infrastructure projects or to help people in economic vulnerability situation (any resemblance with the situation in your country is NOT a coincidence)...

Pickup trucks and the models based on them have been an important topic in my collection of models of vehicles, this is true both for toy cars and for scale replicas, even more, while Muscle Cars drew my attention to Hot Wheels and Matchbox, what really consolidated my taste for these brands was their selection of pickups...

It has been a bit more than 10 years since my first publication in this blog featuring a toy pickup by Hot Wheels (of which you can read here), ever since I have been searching this kind of models and I have found interesting renditions, most of them based on actual vehicles, but I have also included some concept / designer / fantasy / original / internally licensed models as well...

Of course, I prefer by far older models, mainly because of their better diecast / plastic proportion, but while Hot Wheels and Matchbox were part of my affections (that’s no longer the case), I included some relatively recent toy pickups, like my guest for this review.

This model was developed by Jun Imai, former designer at the brand of the flaming logo, who left this company in 2018 (coincidentally by the time I stopped acquiring products by the toy car brands of Mattel); its debut was in 2012, it has had at least 11 iterations, all of them for the Mainline (Regular category), including Treasure / Super Treasure Hunts versions.

I got my example through the primary market, at a local chain retail store, pretty much 5 years ago; it belongs to the 2016 Hot Wheels Hot Trucks Series 5-Pack and as I mentioned in a previous publication (that you can read here), it’s one of the few cases where a 5-Pack actually packs up 5 decent toy vehicles.

The model has a good level of detail, but the proportions, as always, were substantially altered, so much that it looks cartoonish and you can notice it specially at the top of the cabin; the off-road customization is exaggerated and the wheel arches are too big, but the overall appearance is fine for me, not so the diecast / plastic rate, that in this case favors plastic and puts this item in the plastcasts league.

It has diecast body and plastic chassis with chrome finishing, this finishing already shows deterioration, after only 5 years, the mold includes the front grille and the rear bumper; the mold of the interiors includes the bed / box floor, the mud guards and rocker panels; the windows are smoked and they include most of the roof and the scout lights.

The paint job was made in plain yellow with glossy finishing; the decoration was made with stripes in black and white on the side panels, made with tampos, I added painted details for the headlights, scout lights and tail lights; the plastic wheels feature Off-Road 6 Spokes rims design, with yellow lip (one of the wheels designs I like the least to be honest, but this time it worked relatively well) and it was made in Malaysia...

Act 18:24-28 "And a certain Jew named Apollos, born at Alexandria, an eloquent man, and mighty in the Scriptures, came to Ephesus. This man was instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in the spirit, he spake and taught diligently the things of the Lord, knowing only the baptism of John. And he began to speak boldly in the synagogue: whom when Aquila and Priscilla had heard, they took him unto them, and expounded unto him the way of GOD more perfectly. And when he was disposed to pass into Achaia, the brethren wrote, exhorting the disciples to receive him: who, when he was come, helped them much which had believed through grace: For he mightily convinced the Jews, and that publicly, showing by the Scriptures that Jesus was Christ."

2014 Toyota 86 X Style Cb - Compact 2-Door Fastback Coupe 2+2 Sports Car 2014 1:64 Scale Toyota Minicar Collection Series II 1/3 - 8/8 Diecast Scale 1:64 by Kyosho

Due to the way I started my journey in the diecast models collecting and I must clarify that I was already adult collector before that, as I have mentioned in several previous publications, the concept of custom cars from factory was something I associated with bygone times...

By the way, the first models I got for my collection were Muscle Cars and eventually other specialty classic American cars, which were quite popular in the decades of the 50s and 60s of the last century.

At that moment of history, there was an unusual interest from the automotive industry in this kind of products, namely specialty cars, particularly in the market of United States, but also in some countries of Europe, Japan and Australia.

The idea with this kind of products was offering several custom options from factory and additional accessories / parts, also from factory or from the aftermarket, to improve the appearance and performance of cars relatively stock or in most cases, vehicles based on family cars or utilitarian trucks and modified for high performance and/or greater luxury.

However, nowadays I have a wider perspective of the concept of custom cars from factory, because the automotive industry has made of specialty cars (custom cars from factory or special-order cars, if you will) one of its workhorses, in order to make good money in a market already saturated and quite competitive.

For this review, I’m featuring a rather recent example of this concept: the 2014 Toyota 86 X Style Cb, a Compact 2-Door Fastback Coupe 2+2 Sports Car, created originally as a joint venture between Toyota and Subaru, some time after the first one bought a percentage of the former Fuji Heavy Industries, Ltd. (currently Subaru Corporation) shares.

The result of this joint-venture was not only the Toyota 86, but also the Subaru BRZ and the Scion FR-S, which are basically the same car rebranded, with relatively minor differences between them, a model that has both fans and detractors, just like happens with most sport cars.

The 86 was introduced in 2012, but being a cross-brand platform, it has seen several concept and customs cars displayed and/or produced, based on it, virtually from the get go, as well as optional packages and for 2014 the Style Cb was released along with others versions, like: the GAZOO Racing, 86 Supercharger by Team Netz, 86 TRD Griffon Concept 014 and 86 TRD Customize Concept 014.

The 86 in general has been criticized for the reluctance, specially from Subaru, to offer a turbo from factory, in order to add more power and compete in equal conditions with other products in the same segment or by lack of a convertible version, despite the fact that actually for the Style Cb a beautiful Concept Spider was showcased, along with the Coupe, but it never made it to production...

Now, while I know some car journalists have ranted about the design or even the concept itself behind the Style Cb, a specialty car made for the Japanese market (JDM), I think that the combination of a retro styling, more curvaceous in front (supposedly inspired by the designs of Ugo Zagato), with the sporty and yet neat styling at the rear, is very well accomplished, with a more sober look, for a more sophisticated buyer and I’m a professional (graphic) designer, so I know what I’m talking about...

Something I love about true Premium brands of diecast scale models and it’s worth making the clarification, now that Hot Wheels and Matchbox are pretending to transform the Premium designation in a bad joke, is that most times the first ones try to develop and offer those vehicles that are usually neglected by more traditional diecast brands...

Precisely, traditional brands of toy cars (like Matchbox and Hot Wheels, for instance) prioritize more popular and less specific vehicles, to cater the average buyers, just because this kind of products sells better in large amounts and that’s their business.

Premium brands of scale models, on the other hand, make concrete efforts to fill the gaps with products reproducing vehicles outside the mainstream, including concept cars, made sometimes by little known or extincted car brands, with specific manufacturing dates and trim levels, manufactured in limited editions, with special attention to quality, details and finishes, to cater knowledgeable collectors.

Kyosho, a renowned brand of Premium scale models in diecast follows this path, offering a good variety of models from different provenances, perhaps a little less focused on JDM or Japanese cars in general, than other Premium brands like: Tomica Limited Vintage, Konami, CM’s, Oversteer and the like, that offer products in scales around 1:64.

Some of the selections made by Kyosho, regarding its 1:64 scale line (which is out of production currently, but it was replaced by the Car.Nel brand, a more upscale line, similar to Kyosho Beads, as far as I know) and JDM models in particular, are very interesting and unconventional, like this 2014 Toyota 86 X Style Cb.

I got this model in the secondary market at a reasonable price (the latter aspect is always a must for me and if I have to wait for the right price, I don’t mind), with the help of a friend of mine, fellow collector and importer, more than 5 years ago.

It belongs to the 2014 1:64 Scale Toyota Minicar Collection Series II, which was released 9 years after the Collection Series I, with an assortment of 8 models, 3 variations each one, plus a few secret models including a version of the Toyota Hiace and you can see a 2008 Toyota Land Cruiser J200 in the photoshoot, that also belongs to this Series and of which you can read here

It has diecast body and black plastic chassis (which received silver paint for the rear of the exhaust system); the level of detail is great as always with this brand, except the chassis that is a tad plain, but it’s not a serious issue for me, since the product in general terms is very satisfying.

The paint job reproduces very well the two tones color scheme of the actual car (one of the factory options: Nuance Beige and Demitasse Brown), the other options were Black / Demitasse Brown and Light Silver / Demitasse Brown; it’s complemented by tampos and/or decals for the headlights, front grille, rearview side mirrors and the low deck at the rear for the exhaust pipes.

There are plastic inserts for the front, tail lights and rearview side mirrors; the interiors were worked in black, fairly detailed as usual, the wheels are multipart, featuring realistic Compound V 5 Spokes rims design in silver and styled rubber tires; a display base in black is part of the package, featuring the name of the model printed in silver as well as a special trading card printed in full color and it was made in China...

Ezk 26:1-6 "And it came to pass in the eleventh year, in the first day of the month, that the word of the LORD came unto me, saying: Son of man, because that Tyrus hath said against Jerusalem: aha, she is broken that was the gates of the people: she is turned unto me: I shall be replenished, now she is laid waste: therefore thus saith the LORD GOD: behold, I am against thee, O Tyrus, and will cause many nations to come up against thee, as the sea causeth his waves to come up. And they shall destroy the walls of Tyrus, and break down her towers: I will also scrape her dust from her, and make her like the top of a rock. It shall be a place for the spreading of nets in the midst of the sea: for I have spoken it, saith the LORD GOD: and it shall become a spoil to the nations. And her daughters which are in the field shall be slain by the sword; and they shall know that I am the LORD."
