The British car industry is one of the most renowned and varied worldwide: from motorcycles to extra heavy duty trucks / lorries, this segment produces vehicles for virtually any given task, taste or budget, but little remains of the former "constellation" of brands that this market used to have...

Many car brands had a rather short life, so short that they were barely known outside United Kingdom, yet, it’s obvious that the automotive industry has been one of the most important assets of its economy, what is evidenced, up to a point, in the car brands that still remain active...

More than the successive economic crises that the world has faced, particularly since the dawn of the last century, it’s actually the excessive urge to concentrate the ownership of all the businesses in a few hands, what explains the extinction of so many companies, not only in the automotive industry, but in any other economic segment devisable...

Among the few car brands still in business from United Kingdom, Lotus Car Limited is a testimony, so to say, of the inventiveness, innovation and cutting-edge design you can find in products that the British automotive industry has to offer, not only for the local market, but for worldwide market.

By the way, I mentioned ‘so to say’, just because as it has been the case with other great names in the car design and manufacturing industry of United Kingdom, Lotus Cars Limited is no longer a British owned company, but its ownership is shared by Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co., Ltd (ZGH), commonly known as Geely and Etika Automotive, which is an equity partner.

I’m featuring for this publication, not just one, but two examples of what Lotus Cars Limited has been able to offer in the sports cars segment: the 1996 - 2004 Lotus Esprit (S4) V8 European Specs, a Compact 2-Door Fastback Coupe Sports Car and the 2000 - 2004 Lotus Exige Series 1 (121) Track Spec European Specs, a Compact 2-Door Fastback Coupe Sports Car / Track Car.

Lotus has built its reputation through compact and lightweight sports cars that deliver an impressive performance, despite their relatively modest engines, thanks to the excellent engineering involved in the development of its products and that’s precisely the materialization of the philosophy that Colin Chapman established from the very beginning: "simplify, then add lightness"...

The Esprit was a car with a long history that covers almost three decades, from 1976 to 2004, offering a styling that evolved quite a bit during that span, with pretty much 24 variations, while the Exige is one of the more recent developments of this brand, sharing space with the Elise and Evora models, to form the triunvirate that has represented Lotus since the beginning of the present century and will be replaced, a bit hastingly, later this year...

Designers, I mean, automotive designers who became mainly toy cars designers and graphic designers who became toy cars decoration designers, have made a tremendous contribution to what Hot Wheels is and has been; I’m not stating this just because I’m a professional graphic designer myself and I want to support my guild, actually, it’s them who transform ideas about toy cars in toy cars for production and that’s what we, designers, do in our respective fields in a regular basis...

I was "lured" to Hot Wheels because of concept / designer / fantasy / original / internally licensed toy cars, but later I discovered other kind of toy cars produced by this brand, that were more or less appealing for me, depending on the quality of the final result...

Today I’m introducing a pair of models that represent different times in the Lotus Cars Limited evolution, but also the work of two different designers at Hot Wheels: Fraser Campbell and Mark Jones, the curious thing about these facts is that despite the obvious differences, I can see a consistency, a sort of common thread and I’m pretty sure that it’s design what makes this coherence possible...

I got both toy cars through the secondary market, with the help of a friend of mine, fellow collector and importer / private seller, pretty much 9 years ago.

The Lotus Esprit was released in 2002, with at least 13 iterations, all for the Mainline (Regular category), while the Lotus Exige (wrongly named Lotus Sport Elise, a designation that was not available in any of the 11 variations made for the Series 1), was released originally in 2004, with at least 13 iteration, mostly for the Mainline and just one for a line of the Adult category (Speed Machines), it was discontinued in 2013.

Both toy cars offer diecast body and black plastic chassis, with a very good level of detail, the diecast dose is also appropriate; the paint job for the Esprit was made in silver, with Metalflake finishing, complemented by tampos and/or decals in lilac, purple and black, in a not so fortunate decoration, while in the case of the Exige, it was made in apple green with Metalflake and pearled finishing, complemented by tampos and/or decals for front and back detailing, the result is fantastic.

Both feature a black plastic insert for the rear wing, for that very reason they look more proportioned, unlike the coarse and thick wings molded with the body, currently in vogue.

The interiors for both were worked in black, with purple tinted and smoked windows respectively, I really don’t like the lack of B pillar molded with the body in diecast for the Esprit, but I find quite interesting the A pillar molded with the body in diecast for the Exige and covered by the windows; both models offer plastic wheels featuring Y 5 Spokes rims design in chrome and 10 Spokes rims design in chrome respectively, finally both were made in Malaysia...

Act 16:19-24 "And when her masters saw that the hope of their gains was gone, they caught Paul and Silas, and drew them into the marketplace unto the rulers, and brought them to the magistrates, saying: These men, being Jews, do exceedingly trouble our city, and teach customs, which are not lawful for us to receive, neither to observe, being Romans. And the multitude rose up together against them: and the magistrates rent off their clothes, and commanded to beat them. And when they had laid many stripes upon them, they cast them into prison, charging the jailer to keep them safely: Who, having received such a charge, thrust them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks."

1979 Lotus Esprit S2 - Compact 2-Door Coupe Sports Car European / United Kingdom Specs 2016 Legendary Cars Collection Series January Issue Diecast Scale 1:43 by Amercom SA Publications

ENGLISH
It took some time for me to realize that the reign of the straight lines and the polyedral volumes, regarding the design of vehicles, was not an exclusivity of the 80s, as I used to believe...

Given that we are prone to establish some sort of order in the frantic pace of history of the 20th century, the subdivision by decades is considered an appropriate lapse to group a series of events that characterize a particular time...

However, once you deepen a bit in certain aspect of history, for instance, the one with which I opened this publication, it’s easier to notice that in fact there is a series of overlappings between decades, in terms of currents of thought, cultural trends and developments in the fields of art, design and industry.

Besides, there are important differences in the way vehicles are conceived by their manufacturers and received by the public / buyers, between East and West...

The continents of the eastern hemisphere use to be more avant-garde in both senses and Europe particularly, has a rich mixture of influences from different countries that, despite their contiguity, have their own idiosyncrasy, making them more open to accept groundbreaking ideas.

Precisely, the idea of a compact sports car with angled lines and wedge shape, would have been inconceivable in the late 60s and early 70s for people in the United States, just because the curves were a fairly strong trend in the american car industry and local consumers were not expecting anything else.

However, in Europe, more specifically in Italy, designers in general and automotive designers in particular, were experimenting with angular lines in their creations and some of their striking works were displayed in different Auto Shows, as early as in 1972.

My guest for this publication is a clear sample of the european cutting-edge design of the 70s, which was replicated, so to say, by american carmakers, but later, in the 80s and 90s: the 1979 Lotus Esprit S2 - Compact 2-Door Coupe Sports Car

This product of the british company Lotus Cars Limited, was developed since the early 70s and officially released in 1976; Giorgetto Giugiaro, italian automobile designer, with the help of Colin Chapman and Lotus stylist Oliver Winterbottom, created this singular vehicle that became the replacement for the "aged" model Europa.

The Esprit offered a quite decent performance, considering the two oil crisis of that decade and the strong regulations in force, that punished any sports car of the late 70s, thanks to a light body and chassis, combined with a 120.4 cu in, 2.0 L, Inline 4 Lotus 907 engine, rated at pretty much 160 hp, featuring Dell’Orto DHLA 45 E twin carburization and coupled to a 5-speed manual transmission...

You will hardly see another model in 1:43 scale featured in my blog; I have been exploring different scales in my journey by the diecast world, knowing directly their pros and cons, enjoying their particular features and it has been a fascinating periplus...

Nonetheless and due to my restrictions in terms of exhibition space, I decided that the bigger scales definitely are not my business and accordingly, I will have a clear focus on smaller scales, that offer a wide variety of models and represent a more direct link with my infancy, in which they were key toys...

If GOD allows, I will keep all of my models, regardless of their scale, but my collection will have a strong emphasis in scales below 1:50, for my own sake and gradually other kind of collectibles will be introduced here.

I know I have been saying this for some time but, from next year onwards I will cease my acquisition of more diecast models and I will return to my roots, in terms of collectibles.

The reasons?...

Well, I think I already have gotten much of what I always wanted in my collection and some changes in the diecast market as well as in the behavior of the community around it, made me think that it’s better to take distance, because I don’t want to deal with these situations anymore...

Albeit I will continue with my harsh criticism about these issues, because I know that there are still sensible people out there, who will agree with me...

By the way, NO, it doesn’t mean that the reviews related with diecast vehicles will cease, there is still a lot of material to publish, but I need to focus my tight budget on other collectibles and save some money for other priorities, which definitely is a sensible decision.

Today I’m introducing a special model for me, which happens to be another gift from an appreciated friend and fellow collector (also blogger) from Singapore, he never fails to surprise me, HEHE!...

This model belongs to the Legendary Cars Collection Series, a fortnightly publication by Amercom SA, released originally in 2016 for the singaporean and malayan markets.

It includes an 8 pages fascicle with information about the model, a set of stickers with the name and year of production of the items included in this series (a total of 24 automobiles), a folding flyer with a sneak peek of the next issues and the model itself, packed in a blister box.

It’s very likely that this series were offered firstly for the european market, where this kind of products are very popular among collectors, produced by different publishing houses; the main hint about it is the text on the base of the blister box: "Model for collectors. Not suitable for children under 14 years old", that also appears in polish, czech and hungarian.

The model has diecast body and black plastic chassis nicely detailed, which is the usual configuration for this scale (in the photo shoot, I included the only model I have seen, until now, with full diecast construction, the 1993 Renault Clio Williams, made by Solido, a french brand).

The paint job was made in bright yellow, one of the colors available for the actual Lotus Esprit and very in the mood of the 70s; there are plastic inserts for the front bumper and signal lights, door handles, the strange and extremely small side rearview mirrors (they look like those used in the current high-end models with digital camera), the tail lights and the lower rear, that includes the bumper and the exhaust pipes, in at least 2 pieces.

Curiously, the front spoiler of this scale model reminds more the one offered for the Lotus Esprit S1; it has clear windows with matte black tampos for the moldings, the interiors are black, the multipart wheels feature realistic 5 Slot rims design (similar to the Wolfrace alloy rims of the S1, but different to the Speedline rims used in the actual S2), styled rubber tires and it was made in China...

Dan 2:44-49 "And in the days of these kings shall the GOD of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever. Forasmuch as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it broke in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great GOD hath made known to the king what shall come to pass hereafter: and the dream is certain, and the interpretation thereof sure. Then the king Nebuchadnezzar fell upon his face, and worshiped Daniel, and commanded that they should offer an oblation and sweet odors unto him. The king answered unto Daniel, and said: of a truth it is, that1 your GOD is a GOD of gods, and a Lord of kings, and a revealer of secrets, seeing thou couldest reveal this secret. Then the king made Daniel a great man, and gave him many great gifts, and made him ruler over the whole province of Babylon, and chief of the governors over all the wise men of Babylon. Then Daniel requested of the king, and he set Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, over the affairs5 of the province of Babylon: but Daniel sat in the gate of the king."

1980 Lotus Esprit Turbo Type 82 (Prototype) 2002 40th Anniversary 007 James Bond Heroic Horsepower Series 3/4 Diecast Scale 1:62 by Johnny Lightning

ENGLISH
When you’re snooping in the not so secret life of the MI6 secret agent: James Bond, sooner or later you will have to meet one of the most (if not the most) recurrent actors performing this role: Roger Moore...

People have different opinions about the characterization of Moore in this film franchise; some say he lowered the serious profile of Bond, giving him a kinda picaresque or humorous feeling, which apparently doesn’t mix pretty well with the original background of the character.

Personally, my first encounter with the 007 Saga was hand in hand with Moore and despite I realized the jocular tone in his performance, I couldn’t deny the charm of such approach...

Finally, is good to wear an unprepared smile in your face and a spicy line in your mouth, when you’re in the edge of death, don’t you think so?...

In 1981, For Your Eyes Only became part of the Bond’s filmography and meant a marked brake with the previous installments, where the Moore’s 007 returned to the more grounded roots of the Ian Fleming’s main character.

The previous movie: Moonraker, catapulted Bond to the "galactic agent" category; so to say, because despite its great success in the box office, sinned by excesses in the plot, the gadgets and the humor, verging somehow in the parody, without mentioning the astronomical budget of its production.

Precisely, the producers considered prudent, in order to keep the franchise healthy, to restore much of the original spirit of James Bond.

Instead of the "total-world-domination" scheme of the SPECTRE criminal organization, this film makes a more realistic bet for something in the mood of the Cold War, namely, the theft of british military technology.

Other aspects of the movie also contribute to the realism, like the more mature and natural portrayal of Moore for the 007 agent, who doesn’t mind into give a taste of their own medicine to the ruthless and systematic assassins sent to take care of him; or the Bond girl: Melina Havelock, who is prepared to take revenge into her own hands for the murder of her parents; a skillful, intelligent, sophisticated and bold girl, ready for action...

Even the experienced MI6 agent, more used to exquisite grand tourers, like the Aston Martin, must face a car chase in a not-so-Bond vehicle: a Citroen 2CV!...

Definitely, there was a full commitment into create a convincing version of this character and that was a wise move, the 80s were a time when the extravagance was a platitude and a more straightforward and handy Bond is a refreshing approach, albeit the critics have not been quite benevolent with it...

For Your Eyes Only, nevertheless, featured a pair of stunning cars, just to keep a connection with the rest of the Bond filmography: a 1980 Lotus Esprit Turbo Type 82 (Prototype) painted in white (which was blown up at the beginning of the movie, when a pair of thugs attempted to brake into the car) and a 1978 Lotus Esprit Turbo S2 painted in copper color (more appropriate for the shooting in the snowy locations).

This Sport Car was the star of the british carmaker at the time and a bold vehicle, originally designed by the famous Giorgetto Guigiaro for Italdesign, received a rush of instant popularity among the car lovers, just because it was the 007’s ride, could you believe it ?! =PPPPP...

Johnny Lightning, I mean, when it was still in force, was one of the few diecast brands that released licensed models from this franchise, in this scale (hardly, I could mention some models by Corgi, recently were added a pair 007-licensed and a few by Hot Wheels, and I have seen a non-007-licensed model by Kyosho, but if you want more, you must look at other scales).

The extincted brand of diecast from Mishawaka, Indiana, has made great renditions of models included in movie or TV series, and this sample is not an exception at all.

A total of 27 models were selected for the 40th Anniversary 007 Series and this is one of them; at the same time, is one of the few not american models made by JL and hence, a great addition in my collection.

The diecast replica, as usual, deserves all my admiration, because of its undeniable quality and high level of detail everywhere, but is a tad baffling when it comes to the specific model represented...

Although it claims to be the 1980 Lotus Esprit Turbo Type 82 (Prototype) featured in For Your Eyes Only, actually the casting represents a more recent 1989 Lotus Esprit 300 Sport, made exclusively for the american market...

I don’t know the reason behind this decision, which goes against the faithfulness with the actual car, but in the end is a beautiful scale replica and that’s what matters.

On the other hand, the careful paint job / tampos, add more resemblance with the Bond Car (albeit the black paint in the rear bumper is cracked); it has full diecast construction (body and chassis), very detailed interiors in black with right steering wheel and multipart wheels with chrome rims (a choice not so accurate neither so fortunate, though) and styled rubber tires, almost everything aligned with what you expect from an Premium collectible, like this one!...

2 Sam 7:8-11 "Now therefore so shalt thou say unto my servant David: thus saith the LORD of hosts, I took thee from the sheepcote, from following the sheep, to be ruler over my people, over Israel; and I was with thee whithersoever thou wentest, and have cut off all thine enemies out of thy sight, and have made thee a great name, like unto the name of the great men that are in the earth. Moreover I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in a place of their own, and move no more; neither shall the children of wickedness afflict them any more, as formerly, and as since the time that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel, and have caused thee to rest from all thine enemies. Also the LORD telleth thee that HE will make thee a house."
