¿Autos pequeños, de nivel de entrada, desarrollados aparentemente sin muchas expectativas, en medio de tiempos duros, los cuales de alguna forma llegaron a salvar las finanzas de fabricantes de coches establecidos y reputados "caídos en desgracia", pero tambien llegaron a cambiar el panorama automotriz y económico?, parece ser un cuento que escuchas o lees con alguna frecuencia, incluso de una manera cíclica, si piensas un poquitín en este asunto...
Esto sucedió durante los 30s del siglo pasado, cuando la "Gran Depresión" tuvo lugar, el mercado automotor estaba floreciendo a un ritmo increíble, así como otras industrias y el comercio, pero luego y debido a este desastre premeditado, personas alrededor del mundo experimentaron tiempos duros y los cientos de compañías en este segmento fueron reducidas abruptamente (léase artificialmente) a unas pocas docenas...
Aquellas que sobrevivieron, en la mayoría de casos, recurrieron a la producción de estos carros pequeños, de nivel de entrada, sin importar que su producto principal antes de esta falsa crisis fuera algo completamente diferente, como suntuosas limosinas o cosas por el estilo...
Alrededor de 40 años después, otra dificultad mundial prefabricada, la "crisis petrolera" de los 70s apareció en el escenario y de nuevo las empresas automotrices existentes, así como la mayoría de la población, fueron puestas en un predicamento...
Más marcas quedaron por fuera del negocio y más gente fue empobrecida, debido a la debacle económica generada por la falsa escasez de petróleo y las regulaciones gubernamentales excesivas, entonces la mayoría de las compañías sobrevivientes fueron forzadas a desarrollar autos pequeños, de nivel de entrada, que fueran "menos sedientos de combustible"...
Más recientemente y alrededor de 40 años después, hay una oleada "repentina" de vehículos completamente eléctricos y nuevas regulaciones gubernamentales, que anuncian otro "vaivén" de la situación para la industria automotriz y para una porción grande de la población...
Simplemente porque gente alrededor del mundo será forzada a depender de esta clase de tecnologías ineficientes y contaminantes (sí, leíste bien, porque producir baterias eléctricas es extremadamente contaminante), además, aquellos fabricantes que no cambien prácticamente su producción entera a mobilidad eléctrica, desaparecerán, así que la mayoría de ellos están ofreciendo coches pequeños, de nivel de entrada, como la punta de lanza de su nuevo modelo de negocio, impuesto por gobiernos que funcionan como corporaciones privadas...
¿Coincidencia?, no hay forma de argumentar racionalmente a favor de semejante punto de vista, a menos que seas propenso a creer en complots: la evidencia histórica está abrumadoramente en contra de las coincidencias y los eventos cíclicos no tienen nada que ver con la aleatoriedad...
Estoy introduciendo para esta publicación un coche cuyo modelo base fue desarrollado unos pocos antes de la "crisis petrolera" de los 70s, un ejemplo de carros pequeños, de nivel de entrada que ayudaron a una marca conocida por vehículos muchos más lujosos y espaciosos: el BMW 2002 Turbo de 1973 - 1974 Custom, un Coupé / Sedán Ejecutivo Compacto 2 Puertas 2+2 / Auto Deportivo / Auto de Carreras.
No es un secreto que BMW no estaba precisamente en sus mejores tiempos: su involucramiento en la II Guerra Mundial, un conflicto que estaba lejos de ser inevitable y/o necesario, como la "versión oficial de la historia" reclama, justo como sucede con el resto de "guerras necesarias" del siglo pasado y los rumores de guerra del siglo presente, dejaron una "mancha" durable en su imagen, su reputación y obviamente, en sus finanzas, los 40s y 50s fueron particularmente duros para la compañía bávara.
Sin embargo, en lo que la "versión oficial de la historia" llamaría un "golpe de suerte", BMW empezó su recuperación con la introducción de una línea de productos novedosa, llamada Neue Klasse (Clase Nueva) y la Serie 1602 fue una derivación de esta línea, la cual a su vez fue la base para el modelo 2002, que más tarde fue actualizado a versión Turbo.
Este carro fue un contrasentido en una época caracterizada por la austeridad y las regulaciones despóticas, justo como ocurrió durante los 30s del siglo pasado y como está empezando a suceder de nuevo en la segunda década del presente siglo, pero ese hecho fue precisamente lo que lo hizo una leyenda muy respetada a la fecha; con todo, encuentro realmente difícil creer que algo como esto fue el resultado de un "golpe de suerte"...
Esta vez estoy introduciendo un auto de juguete basado en el BMW 2002, fue desarrollado por Jun Imai, ex-diseñador en Hot Wheels y lanzado originalmente en 2012, ha tenido hasta ahora al menos 15 iteraciones, para líneas en las categorías Regular y Adulta, probablemente está basado en una versión hecha para el mercado de norteamérica, porque presenta luces de cola redondas y no las luces de cola rectangulares habituales, además del volante a la izquierda...
Conseguí este modelo a través del mercado secundario, con la ayuda de un revendedor privado local, hace más o menos 6 años; pertenece a la Serie Hot Wheels Heritage - Real Riders de 2015, la cual es simplemente una línea Adulta, justo como cualquier otra línea de esta clase para el mercado minorista, aunque ha sido etiquetada retroactiva y engañosamente como Serie "premium", no puedo enfatizarlo lo suficiente: ¡qué mal chiste!...
Esta Serie, no obstante, fue lanzada antes que Mattel implementara su estrategia fraudulenta de posicionamiento de producto y no importa cuánto los promotores de marca pretendan llamar estas Series "premium", estoy convencido como coleccionista experimentado que están muy lejos de cumplir con los requerimientos para ser consideradas propiamente artículos Premium, quiero decir, ni siquiera cumplen con los requerimientos para ser consideradas propiamente artículos Adultos, la categoría a la que pertenecen y explicaré por qué...
En ese momento, la presentación para el producto fue una tarjeta diseñada agradablemente, impresa a todo color, con el mismo tamaño de aquellas usadas para productos de la Línea Principal, después fue implementada una tarjeta más grande, en un intento fallido de "justificar" el incremento en precio y la etiqueta "premium", un "argumento" que puede funcionar con compradores simples y coleccionistas novatos, pero no con coleccionistas experimentados.
El coche de juguete en sí ofrece construcción completa en diecast, con un nivel de detalle muy decente, aunque usa básicamente los mismos moldes de la versión para la Línea Principal, en otras palabras, es simplemente un carro de juguete con ciertas mejoras, que a través de una campaña de mercadeo es posicionado como algo "premium", pero los coleccionistas saben que el término Premium solo aplica para réplicas a escala, no para autos de juguete.
El trabajo de pintura fue hecho en plateado con acabado Metalflake y complementado por una decoración de estilo muy simple y vintage, hecha con tampos y/o calcomanías sobre el capó, baúl y parte de los paneles laterales, en negro y azul claro, tiene problemas de alineamiento en el baúl, a propósito.
La decoración, sin embargo, es demasiado simple considerando que nada fue incluido para el frente y la cola: a este nivel de precio, alrededor de cinco veces lo que pagas por un artículo de la Línea Principal (categoría Regular), es inaceptable no tener una decoración completa con tampos y/o calcomanías, incluso insertos plásticos para las luces frontales y de cola, simplemente porque eso es lo que obtienes por defecto de otras marcas en las categorías Adulta y De Lujo, ni hablar de la categoría Premium.
Bueno, al menos no presenta la terrible impresión digital en inyección de tinta, tan usual actualmente, que en realidad no es tampoco una opción en este nivel de precio, pero ya sabes cómo Mattel juega sucio con sus consumidores de forma regular y ellos aceptan encantados esta estafa; por cosas como estas, es un insulto a la inteligencia llamar a estos artículos Premium.
Añadí recientemente más detalles pintados para compensar esta decoración incompleta, que desafortunamente no pude incluir en la sesión de fotos; este modelo tiene ventanas tintadas de azul, una selección no tan realista, pero relativamente aceptable en un coche de juguete, mientras los interiores fueron trabajados en plateado oscuro, aunque en negro lucirían mejor, con un nivel de detalle básico.
Las ruedas multiparte presentan diseño de rimes 8 Spokes Watanabe Style en negro, con labio cromado, llantas en caucho sintético labradas, una selección muy bonita que habitualmente ves en modelos japoneses, pero aquí funciona bastante bien y fue hecho en Malasia...

Small, entry level cars developed apparently without much expectations, in the midst of tough times, which somehow came to save the finances of established and reputed car manufacturers "fallen from favor", but also came to change the automotive and economic panorama?, seems to be a tale you hear or read with some frequency, even in a cyclical manner, if you think a little bit on this matter...
It happened during the 30s of the last century, when the "Great Depression" took place, the automotive market was flourishing at an incredible pace, as well as other industries and the commerce, but then and due to this premeditated disaster, people around the world experienced tough times and the hundreds of existing companies in this segment were reduced abruptly (read artificially) to a few dozens...
Those that survived, in most cases, resorted to the production of these small, entry level cars, regardless their main product before this fake crisis were something completely different, like lavish limousines or things like that...
Around 40 years later, another pre-manufactured world difficulty, the 70’s "oil crisis" appeared on stage and again the existing automotive companies, as well as most of the population, were put on a predicament...
More brands went out of business and more people were impoverished, due to the economic debacle generated by a fake oil shortage and the excessive governmental regulations, then most of the surviving companies were forced to develop small, entry level cars, that were "less thirsty for fuel"...
More recently and around 40 years later, there is a "sudden" surge of fully electric vehicles and new governmental regulations, that announce another "coming and going" of the situation for the automotive industry and for a large portion of the population...
Just because people around the world will be forced to depend on this kind of inefficient and polluting technologies (yeah, you read right, because producing electric batteries is extremelly polluting), besides, those manufacturers not changing virtually their entire production to electric mobility, will disappear, so most of them are offering small, entry level cars, as the spearhead of their new business model, imposed by governments that are run as private corporations...
Coincidence?, there is no way to argue rationally in favor of such a standpoint, unless you’re prone to believe in plots: historical evidence is overwhelmingly against coincidences and cyclical events don’t have anything to do with randomness...
I’m introducing for this publication a car whose base model was developed a few years before the 70’s "oil crisis", as a example of small, entry levels cars that helped a brand known for way more luxurious and roomy vehicles: the 1973 - 1974 BMW 2002 Turbo Custom, a Compact Executive 2-Door 2+2 Coupe / Sedan Sports Car / Racing Car.
It’s not a secret that BMW was not precisely in its best times: its involvement in the II World War, a conflict that was far from being unavoidable and/or necessary, as the "official version of history" claims, just like happens with the rest of "necessary wars" of the last century and the rumors of wars of the present century, left a durable "stain" on its image, its reputation and obviously, on its finances, the 40s and 50s were particularly tough for the Bavarian company.
However, in what the "official version of history" would call a "stroke of luck", BMW started its recuperation process with the introduction of a novel line of products, called Neue Klasse (New Class) and the 1602 Series was a derivation of this line, which in turn was the base for the 2002 model, that later was upgraded to a Turbo version.
This car was a countersense in a time characterized by austerity and despotic regulations, just like it happened during the 30s of the last century and as it’s starting to happen again in the second decade of the present century, but that fact was precisely what made it a legend very respected to date; yet, I find really hard to believe that something like this was the result of a "stroke of luck"...
This time I’m introducing a toy car based on the BMW 2002, it was developed by Jun Imai, former designer at Hot Wheels and released originally in 2012, it has had until now at least 15 iterations, for lines in the Regular and Adult categories, it’s probably based on a version made for the market of North America, because it features round tail lights and not the usual rectangular tail lights, in addition to left hand drive...
I got this model through the secondary market, with the help of a local private reseller, pretty much 6 years ago; it belongs to the 2015 Hot Wheels Heritage - Real Riders Series, which is simply an Adult line, just like any other line of this kind for the retail market, albeit it has been retroactively and misleadingly tagged as a "premium" Series, I can’t stress it enough: what a bad joke!...
This Series, nonetheless, was released before Mattel implemented its fraudulent product positioning strategy and it doesn’t matter how much brand promoters pretend to call these Series "premium", I’m convinced as experienced collector that they are very far from meeting the requirements to be considered properly Premium items, I mean, they don’t even meet the requirements to be considered properly Adult items, the category to which they belong and I will explain why...
At that moment, the presentation for the product was a nicely designed card, printed in full color, with the same size of those used for products of the Mainline, later it was implemented a bigger card, in a failed attempt to "justify" the increase in price and the "premium" tag, an "argument" that can work on simple buyers and newbie collectors, but not on experienced collectors.
The toy car itself offers full diecast construction, with a very decent level of detail, albeit it uses basically the same molds of the version for the Mainline, in other words, it’s just a toy car with certain improvements, that through a marketing campaign is positioned as something "premium", but collectors know that the term Premium only applies to scale replicas, not to toy cars.
The paint job was made in silver with Metalflake finishing and complemented by a very simple and vintage style decoration, made with tampos and/or decals on the hood, trunk and part of the side panels, in black and light blue, it has misalignment issues on the trunk, by the way.
The decoration, however, is too simple considering that nothing was included for the front and tail: at this price level, around fives time what you pay for an item from the Mainline (Regular category), it’s unacceptable not having a complete decoration with tampos and/or decals, even plastic inserts for front and tail lights, just because that’s what you get by default from other brands in the Adult and Deluxe categories, let alone in the Premium category.
Well, at least it doesn’t feature the terrible digital inkjet printing, so usual currently, that actually is not an option either at this price level, but you know how Mattel plays dirty with its consumers in a regular basis and they accept gladly this swindle; for things like these, it’s an insult to intelligence calling these items Premium.
I added recently more painted details to make up for this incomplete decoration, that unfortunaltely I couldn’t include in the photoshoot; this model has blue tinted windows, a not so realistic selection, but relatively acceptable in a toy car, while the interiors were worked in dark silver, although in black they would look better, with a basic level of detail.
The multipart wheels feature 8 Spokes Watanabe Style rims design in black, with chrome lip, styled synthetic rubber tires, a very nice selection that you usually see on Japanese models, but here works pretty fine and it was made in Malaysia...
