2000 Ford F-550 Super Duty Regular Cab Dual Rear Wheels (Dually) Tow Truck / Class 5 Medium Duty Truck (Tow-Nado) 2001 Rebel Rods Series 4/6 Diecast Scale 1:80 by Johnny Lightning

Con el pasar del tiempo (y ciertamente tenemos la sensación que el tiempo ahora, va más rápido que antes), esperamos de alguna forma que todo será mejor, más eficiente, más confiable o incluso que todo va cuidarse por sí mismo, sin tener que mover un dedo, ¿no?... 

Es lo que llamaría el "Sindrome Supersónicos" y aquellos que han visto o al menos han oído de esta comedia de situaciones animada, emitida a principios de los 60s, sabrán de lo que estoy hablando... 

Uhmmm, no puedo evitar sentir que tal percepción es "algo" ingenua, no porque yo sea pesimista (tampoco optimista), sino porque soy realista y no pienso que vayamos a vivir ese futuro utópico, al menos no en la forma que la mayoría de gente piensa... 

Puesto que yo ya sé que lo anterior sonó apocalíptico (en un sentido profundo, es así en realidad) y estamos apenas comenzando 2016 así que, "necesitamos algo de vibra positiva" y bla, bla, bla, déjenme explicar mi punto de vista al respecto, en mi forma particular... 

Estás en tu auto, tu reino sobre ruedas, conduciendo sosegadamente a través de una hermosa vía, en medio de la nada, porque verdaderamente disfrutas la libertad que sientes, mientras te mueves por tus propios medios... 

Tal vez estás en tu costoso coche, el último modelo de tu fabricante de carros favorito, dotado con las mejores opciones de fábrica disponibles o tal vez estás en tu otro e incluso más costoso auto, el "clásico", personalizado con las mejores partes disponibles en el mercado de accesorios... 

Y en el preciso momento en que estás a punto de exprimir toda la potencia por la que pagaste, con tu dinero ganado con esfuerzo, ¡BOOM!... 

Tu coche se daña y no tienes idea de cómo arreglarlo, porque las leyes de Murphy, respecto a los carros, no hacen excepciones y tienen un gusto exacerbado por la ironía... 

En dichas situaciones, realmente podrías aprovechar una ayudita de uno de esos, digamos "menos exóticos" vehículos (aunque, ese no es siempre el caso), que también conoces como camiones de remolque (grúas). 

Sí, no importa cuán eficiente, confiable, caro o ridículamente avanzado sea tu auto; como el Capitán Edward A. Murphy diría: "si algo puede salir mal, lo hará" y quizás por eso me encantan los camiones de remolque (grúas), ¡en la vida real y obviamente, en mi colección!... 

Dentro de este tipo de vehículos utilitarios, puedes encontrar casi cualquier "color y sabor", con cargas útiles que van de media tonelada a cientos de toneladas y esta vez, estoy introduciendo uno que no es precisamente un fierro escuálido: el Camión de Remolque Ford F-550 Super Duty Cabina Regular Ruedas Traseras Duales de 2000. 

El F-550 es mucho más que una camioneta pickup con hormonas (lo cual estaría dentro del segmento de Camiones de Servicio Liviano, en el mejor de los casos), es de hecho un Camión de Servicio Mediano de Clase 5. 

A propósito, si fuera un Camión de Servicio Mediano Clase 6, necesitarías un licencia para conducción comercial (CDL por sus siglas en inglés), probablemente para un camión Clase C, con el fin de usarlo legalmente en los Estados Unidos (o la licencia especial equivalente en otros países)... 

En la línea Super Duty de Ford, a la cual pertenece el F-550, es el tope de línea, con una carga útil de 8.915 kg (este fabricante de autos también ofrece los F-250, F-350 y F-450, con cada vez más clasificación de peso bruto vehicular -GVWR por sus siglas en inglés-). 

Curiosamente, la marca Super Duty, fue usada por Ford en los 60s, para los camiones más pesados en su portafolio y quizás, por esa misma razón, la línea reciente Super Duty, luce más como un camión pesado que como una camioneta pickup liviana; a diferencia del pasado, cuando los camiones de servicio pesado y servicio liviano compartían su diseño general de carrocería. 

Sin embargo, las diferencia entre los camiones de servicio liviano y servicio mediano construidos por Ford, no son solo cosméticas; hay varios cambios mecánicos y estructurales que incluyen: ejes, muelles, suspensión, transmisión, frenos más pesados, más grandes y más fuertes, y en términos generales, una construción de carrocería sobre el chasis más robusta. 

Todas estas características, son necesarias con el fin de ofrecer una opción seria para este exigente segmento del mercado en los Estados Unidos, donde el negocio de los camiones de remolque está muy desarrollado. 

Hasta donde sé, Ford tiene la tajada más grande del segmento de los camiones para servicio mediano en su país de origen, seguido por Chevrolet / GMC y Dodge luego, deben estar haciendo algo bien... 

Supongo que mucho de su éxito, radica en su selección de trenes de potencia que va de un motor de 330 pulgadas cúbicas, 5.4 L, AEFI V-8, clasificado en 260 hp, a un motor de 415 pulgadas cúbicas, 6.8 L, SEFI V-10, clasificado en 310 hp e incluye un motor de 444 pulgadas cúbicas, 7.3 L, DI Turbo Diesel, clasificado en 235 hp. 

¡Esta es la clase de "fierros" que me encantaría conducir en la vida real!... 

Aunque ser optimista no hace parte de mi carácter, ahora que lo pienso, hay de hecho noticias increíbles para 2016, respecto al universo de modelos a escala, porque lo que hasta hace poco era solo un rumor, es ahora una realidad: ¡Johnny Lightning regresó a la arena de los nombres más grandes en diecast a escala pequeña!... 

Y no de la mano de gente que realmente no sabía sobre la mística detrás de esta marca (como Takara Tomy, por ejemplo =PPPPP), NO, sino de la mano de alguien que fue responsable por el verdadero renacimiento de Johnny Lightning en 1995 (parte de los líderes en Playing Mantis) y también, hace pocos años, de AutoWorld: el sr. Thomas E. Lowe. 

Necesitabamos ese renacimiento (espero no estar solo en esto), porque JL se destaca entre la multitud de fabricantes de diecast, ofreciendo excelentes réplicas a escala, con precios decentes; sin seguir el camino fácil de las cosas baratas y de mala calidad. 

Ahora, quiero ser claro en esto: no soy un representante comercial de Johnny Lightning o algo así, no me pagan por esto; solo soy un coleccionista sensato, que aprecia a esta marca y honestamente cree que JL merece un lugar prominente en cualquier colección, punto. 

En ese sentido, no tengo reparos en sugerir apoyo a Johnny Lightning, comprando sus productos y disfrutando su calidad; de otra forma, veremos la nueva y tal vez definitiva extinción de un gran fabricante de diecast... 

Mi invitado para esta publicación, pertenece a la Serie Rebel Rods, que ha tenido varios lanzamientos, incluyendo cada uno, un promedio de seis modelos y su principal característica es la ausencia de capó. 

El modelo venía dentro de una tarjeta grande y gruesa, impresa a todo color y es otra exquisita muestra del lindo trabajo de Johnny Lightning, cuando se trata de camiones; pero, a pesar del hecho que JL trabaja principalmente en escala 1:64, este camión, como otros modelos en la misma categoría hechos por esta marca, NO está en dicho rango, de otra forma sería más grande, la escala verdadera aquí es 1:80. 

Tiene carrocería y chasis en diecast, bastante detallados, incluyendo los estribos laterales (lo lamento, olvidé tomar fotos del chasis =P); el trabajo de pintura es de primera categoría, en negro brillante, incluyendo varios tampos y calcomanías cuidadosamente aplicados, para las luces delanteras, parrila y bómper frontales, los paneles laterales con llamas de pinza de cangrejo, luces de señal, barra de luces en la parte superior, espejos retrovisores en las puertas, el platón del camión y las luces de cola. 

La bahía del motor recibió pintura negro mate y el motor en sí fue hecho en diecast, con acabado pulido; tiene insertos plásticos, pintados en negro brillante, para los dispositivos de remolque. 

Los interiores son rojos, muy bien detallados, las ruedas son multiparte (presenta ruedas duales traseras), con diseño de rimes realista en cromado, llantas labradas en caucho, incluye un set de calcomanías de agua para personalización adicional y fue hecho en China...

With the passage of time (and certainly we have the feeling that time now, goes faster than before), we expect somehow that everything will be better, more efficient, more reliable or even that everything will take care of itself, without having to lift a finger, aren’t we?... 

It’s what I would call the "Jetsons Syndrome" and those who have watched or at least have heard about this animated sitcom, originally aired in the early 60s, will know what I’m talking about... 

Uhmmm, I can’t help but feeling that such perception is "kinda" naive, not because I’m pessimistic (neither optimistic), but because I’m realistic and I don’t think that we are going to live that utopian future, at least not in the way most people do... 

Inasmuch as I already know that the above sounded apocalyptic (in a deep sense, it’s actually that way) and we are barely starting 2016 so, we "need some positive vibe" and blah, blah, blah, let me explain my point of view on the matter, in my particular way... 

You’re in your car, your kingdom on wheels, driving sedately through a beautiful road, in the middle of nowhere, because you truly enjoy the freedom you feel, while moving by your own means... 

Maybe you’re in your expensive ride, the latest model of your favorite carmaker, gifted with the best factory options available or maybe you’re in your other and even more expensive ride, the "classic", customized with the best parts available in the aftermarket... 

And in the very moment you’re about to squeeze all the power you paid for, with your hard earned money, BOOM!... 

Your ride is broken and you have no idea how to fix it, because the Murphy’s laws, regarding cars, make no exceptions and they have an exacerbated taste for irony... 

In such situations, you really could use a little help from one of those, let’s say "less exotic" vehicles (although, that’s not always the case), that you also know as tow trucks. 

Yeah, it doesn’t matter how efficient, reliable, expensive or ludicrously advanced is your car; as the Captain Edward A. Murphy would say: "if anything can go wrong, it will" and perhaps that’s why I love tow trucks, in the real life and obviously, in my collection!... 

Within this type of utilitarian vehicles, you can find almost any "color and flavor", with payloads that go from half a ton to hundreds of tons and this time, I’m introducing one that is not precisely a scrawny iron: the 2000 Ford F-550 Super Duty Regular Cab Dual Rear Wheels (Dually) Tow Truck. 

The F-550 is much more than a pickup truck with hormones (which would be within the Light Duty Trucks segment, in the best case), it’s indeed a Class 5 Medium Duty Truck. 

By the way, if it were a Class 6 Medium Duty Truck, you would need a commercial driver’s license (CDL), probably for a Class C truck, in order to use it legally in the United States (or the equivalent special license, in other countries)... 

In the Super Duty line of trucks by Ford, to which the F-550 belongs, it’s the top of the line, with a payload of 8,915 kg (this carmaker also offers the F-250, F-350 and F-450, with increasingly gross vehicle weight rating -GVWR-). 

Curiously, the brand Super Duty, was used by Ford in the 60s, for the heaviest trucks in its portfolio and perhaps, for that very reason, the recent Super Duty line, looks more like a heavy truck than like a pickup truck; unlike in the past, when heavy duty and light duty trucks shared their overall body design. 

However, the differences between the light duty and medium duty trucks built by Ford, are not only cosmetic; there are several mechanical and structural changes that include: heavier, larger and stronger axles, springs, suspension, transmission, brakes, and in general terms, a sturdier body-on-frame construction. 

All these features, are necessary in order to offer a serious option for this demanding market segment in the United States, where the tow trucks business is highly developed. 

As far as I know, Ford has the largest slice of the medium duty truck segment in its country of origin, followed by Chevrolet/GMC and Dodge so, they must be doing something right... 

I guess that much of its success, lies in its selection of powertrains that goes from a 330 cu in, 5.4 L, AEFI V-8 engine, rated at 260 hp, to a 415 cu in, 6.8 L, SEFI V-10 engine, rated at 310 hp and includes a 444 cu in, 7.3 L, DI Turbo Diesel engine, rated at 235 hp. 

This is the kind of "irons" that I would love to drive in the real life!... 

Albeit being optimistic is not part of my character, now that I think about it, there are in fact awesome news for 2016, regarding the scale model’s universe, because what not so long ago was just a rumor, it’s now a reality: Johnny Lightning came back to the arena of the greatest names in small scale diecast !!!... 

And not from the hand of people who really didn’t know about the mystic behind this brand (like Takara Tomy, for instance =PPPPP), NO, but from the hand of someone who was responsible for the true revival of Johnny Lightning in 1995 (part of the leaders in Playing Mantis) and also, a few years ago, of AutoWorld: mr. Thomas E. Lowe. 

We needed such revival (I hope not to be alone in this), because JL stands out among the crowd of diecast makers, offering excellent scale replicas, with decent prices; without following the easy way of the cheap and trashy stuff. 

Now, I want to be clear on this: I’m not a trade representative of Johnny Lightning or something like that, I’m not paid for this; I’m just a sensible collector, who appreciates this brand and who honestly believes that JL deserves a prominent place in any collection, period. 

In that sense, I have no qualms into suggest support to Johnny Lightning, buying their products and enjoying their quality; otherwise, we will see the new and maybe definitive extinction of a great diecast maker... 

My guest for this publication, belongs to the Rebel Rods Series, which has had several releases, including each one, an average of six models and their main feature is the absence of hood. 

The model came inside a big and thick card, printed in full color and is another exquisite sample of the nice work of Johnny Lightning, when it comes to trucks; but, despite the fact that JL works mainly in 1:64 scale, this truck, like other models in the same category made by this brand, is NOT in such rank, otherwise it would be bigger, the true scale here is 1:80. 

It has diecast body and chassis, fairly detailed, including the side running boards (sorry, I forgot to take pictures of the chassis =P); the paint job is top notch, in glossy black, including several tampos and decals carefully applied, for the head lights, front grille and bumper, the side panels with crab claw flames, signal lights, light bar on top, rearview mirrors in the doors, the truck’s bed and the tail lights. 

The engine bay received flat black paint and the engine itself was made in diecast, with polished finishing; it has plastic inserts, painted in glossy black, for the tow devices. 

The interiors are red, very well detailed, the wheels are multipart (it features dual rear wheels), with realistic rims design in chrome, styled rubber tires, it includes a set of water decals for additional customization and it was made in China...
