ENGLISH The Z Series by Nissan is an institution in the japanese automotive market, that revolutionized the compact sports car segment, not only locally but also it would take the world by storm years later...
In 1970, when it was originally released, there was a wide offer of small cars endowed with a good dose of performance and attitude, wherever you looked, I mean, worldwide...
The list of iconic vehicles that were present that year, within the compact sports cars segment, includes great names like: BMW 2002, Jaguar E-Type, Porsche 911, Alfa Romeo Guilia, Ford Escort, Holden Monaro, De Tomaso Pantera, Lotus Esprit, Chevrolet Corvette, Ferrari Dino, Mazda Cosmo, to name just a few.
As you can see, there was a bit of everything, with stupendous examples of cars offering a particular pedigree, that you would love without much effort, but even in the midst of this lush panorama, the Nissan Z, with its first release: the 240Z, stands out among the crowd.
The Z was one of the few models that created somehow a category of its own because, while there were many options in the market of compact sports cars, this vehicle offered a combination of performance, style and affordable price that was really hard to match, that’s to say, other cars with a similar balance between performance and style could cost much more.
Honoring this legacy, I’m introducing a representative of the fifth generation of this iconic model: the 2004 Nissan 350Z, a Compact 3-Door Fastback Coupe Sports Car that was offered both for the international and japanese markets, albeit for the latter it was designated Nissan Fairlady Z33.
The car was developed in Nissan Design America and it was clearly aimed at the market of the United States, from which the Nissan 300ZX (the previous model) was withdrawn, due to poor sales, which in turn was the consequence of an unnecessary shift from a car oriented to performance, to one oriented to luxury, betraying its initial vocation.
The 350Z exudes character and sportiveness, qualities diluted in previous generations and poses a neat, muscular and yet stylish design, in contrast with the rather "baroque" work on the 300ZX; but you still can see some cues of the original 240Z, with its very low stance, long hood, short trunk, short rearward cabin and the fastback configuration.
Since we’re talking about a car geared to performance, a pocket rocket, you must blend all that style with a good powerplant and the Nissan 350Z doesn’t disappoint in that sense, with a 210 cu in, 3.5 L, 24-Valve VQ35DE V6 engine, fuel injected, rated at 287 hp and coupled to a brilliant 6-speed manual transmission, I think it was a more than worthy rebirth of the Z!...
When I was visiting the page of a diecast collector in a social network, recently, there was something that caught my attention and it was a remark he made about Johnny Lightning: he haven’t seen any new release by this brand...
Then another guy, who has been writer and/or editor at several magazines related with the automotive sector, commented in such publication that there wouldn’t be more new castings and he seemed quite convinced about his claim, almost cutting...
Now, maybe the latter guy has contact with people at Johnny Lightning, thanks to his job as writer and editor in the cars segment, which is a way to get first hand information and I have to agree with the fellow collector already mentioned, in the fact that until now, there have not been scale replicas of cars, trucks, pickup trucks or vans different to those previously released.
However, I wouldn’t dare to say that there is not or there will not be new castings at all in the current offer by Johnny Lightning, because that’s not true and you don’t have to go so far.
This very year will be released (or have been already released) a pair of Series: Tiny Houses and Truck & Trailer, which include new tools / molds for campers, house trailers, flatbed car haulers, enclosed car haulers and camper trailers, without mentioning new wheels designs introduced in this new stage: it definitely counts as new castings, complementary castings if you will, but new castings after all.
Besides, an official distributor here in my hometown told me that at some point of this semester or the following, a brand new model will be released and, for obvious reasons, distributors have also first hand information, albeit I have not been able to verify it.
But even if Johnny Lightning keeps releasing previous castings, there is no compelling reason to complaint about that, as I have heard from some diecast collectors, among other things, because this is the chance for many to get the models they weren’t able to get in the past, which nowadays fetch very high prices in the secondary market.
Additionally: the recent offer include evident improvements in details, paint jobs, decorations and the overall realism in models that were already very well developed from the get go so, you feel more rewarded, that’s something you cannot afford to say about other diecast brands (Mattel, Greenlight and others are ringing in my ears) and you don’t have to suffer because of a messep up distribution...
This time, nonetheless, I’m introducing a model from the Playing Mantis era, one that is very atypical because Johnny Lightning is well known by its models based on american cars, but this one is an imported and it shows clearly the great talent in the design department available in this still underrated brand of diecast.
I got it, as usual, with the help of a friend of mine, fellow collector and importer, more than 6 years ago; it belongs to the 2004 Lightning Strike New Cars - Real Wheels Series, Release 2 and it’s the debut of the mold; the presentation for this Series is a big and nice card, printed in full color.
This model has full diecast construction and the level of detail is magnificent, very in the line of Premium models and the work in the chassis is laudable, even better than what you can find in Kyosho, for instance; the paint job in silver replicates one of the factory colors available and as you expect with this brand, it’s complemented by tampos and/or decals for the front and signal lights, front grille, Z emblems on the side panels, windows moldings, tail lights, 350 Z and Nissan emblems on the rear.
There is no opening hood and I guess it has to do with the costs of licensing, but I have no complaint about that, due to the excellent execution, the interiors were worked in two pieces (medium gray and beige), faithful to the actual car, the wheels are multipart with realistic and modern 6 Spoke rims design in silver, styled rubber tires, it includes a neat trading card, printed in front with a picture of the actual car in exhibition (for a proper comparison) and it was made in China...
Isa 26:3-9 "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee. Trust ye in the LORD forever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH is everlasting strength: for he bringeth down them that dwell on high; the lofty city, he layeth it low; he layeth it low, even to the ground; he bringeth it even to the dust. The foot shall tread it down, even the feet of the poor, and the steps of the needy. The way of the just is uprightness: Thou, most upright, dost weigh the path of the just. Yea, in the way of thy judgments, O LORD, have we waited for thee; the desire of our soul is to thy name, and to the remembrance of thee. With my soul have I desired thee in the night; yea, with my spirit within me will I seek thee early: for when thy judgments are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness."
I thought JL has gone out of business? Nice works done and I can see even the details on the rims. The colour of seats is well chosen as they looks leather like, like those offer in Japanese car. The Nissan logo also printed sharply on the both front and rear. I always find a discast undercarriage a bonus. Info card makes good reference.
Errrrr, nope pal, Johnny Lightning is again in the diecast business, thank GOD, since 2016 and as far as I know it’s still property of Takara-Tomy (TOMY International, Inc), but the brand is managed by Round 2 Corporation and its CEO Thomas E. Lowe (who was also CEO of Playing Mantis) by the figure of licensing... Even better, I have been researching different sources and despite the rumors that there will be not be new tools/castings, I have been found information claiming otherwise !!!...
This Nissan 350Z is gorgeous and full of details everywhere, it’s a pleasure for your eyes, it was made with love, it does justice to the actual car, it includes that great trading card and well, that’s the hallmark of Johnny Lightning, what else I can say ???... =OOOOO
HEHE... Absolutely agree with you pal: this is the kind of stuff you expect from a brand that truly has a commitment with collectors and while there is no perfect diecast brand, Johnny Lightning gets closer to what we demand, than other brands... Thanks for you compliments on my pictures !!!... Thinking about that, working with natural light as I do, makes the pictures much more honest, showing relentlessly hits and misses in the collectibles displayed, very in the line with my reviews so, they work together to bring some coherence to this blog and I guess that’s what my regular visitors feel and the reason why they return... =D

I’m a professional graphic designer and a restful collector, but above all: I’m someone who doesn’t take for granted anything, just because someone else says so. I think this hobby goes way beyond buying stuff here and there: anybody with money can buy collectibles, but not anybody becomes collector by doing so. I think as well that this hobby is, more than anything, about knowledge, about making sense of what happens around us and just like any other kind of knowledge, if it’s devoid of ethics, is worthless. I like to address topics around collectionism, including, but not limited to: history, industry, forums, groups, collectors, distributors, sellers, etc. I’m fully aware that criticism is essential for our hobby: everything is susceptible of improvement and we the collectors demand quality, but the industry around it doesn’t necessarily shares that vision. After all, well-targeted criticism always helps to detect failures and correct them, it’s like critical thinking: it helps you see things as they really are and not just as how they are presented to you. If you are someone who likes to look beyond the surface, welcome, if that is not the case, continue at your own risk...
