2009 Dodge Challenger R/T 2-Door Hardtop Coupe - MOPAR Drift Car 2010 Johnny Lightning 2.0 - MOPAR Series Release 5 3/4 Diecast Scale 1:70 by Johnny Lightning

Hay muy pocas compañías, sin importar el sector económico al que pertenecen, que pueden ostentar una historia de medio siglo en un mundo tan cambiante como el nuestro, particularmente desde principios del siglo XX, ni hablar de compañías con más tiempo en el mercado... 

Recientemente, en 2017, MOPAR celebró su 80º Aniversario y eso es un montón de tiempo en la industria automotriz; esta compañía ha hecho un nombre como OEM (Fabricante de Equipamiento Original por sus siglas en inglés), anteriormente para Chrysler (Chrysler Group LLC) y actualmente para FCA US (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles), pero también ofrece servicio posventa (mantenimiento y reparación), así como actividades relacionadas... 

Sin embargo, como podrías esperar respecto de una compañía con una historia tan larga, MOPAR no empezó como una organización global; sus comienzos fueron mucho más humildes y lo creas o no, la marca nació como una palabra híbrida creada a partir de "MOtor" y "PARts" y usada para una nueva (en aquella época) línea de anticongelantes hecha por Chrysler Motor Parts. 

El crecimiento de la marca empezó a principios de los 40s, cuando MOPAR produjo partes para vehículos militares utilizados durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, como el paquete Willys’ Wheeler para el legendario Jeep Willys MB. 

En los 50s, el nacimiento del famoso motor HEMI de Chrysler ayudó mucho a la visibilidad de MOPAR especialmente en el mundo de las carreras, donde sus productos fueron vistos en acción por miles de entusiastas de los autos y este impulso continuó en los 60s y 70s, durante el auge de los Muscle Cars. 

Si bien la fabricación de partes de coches para alto rendimiento es la primera cosa que viene a la mente cuando estás pensando en MOPAR (bueno, al menos si te encantan los carros americanos, como a mí), lo que en realidad consolidó esta marca como el emporio que es en la actualidad es el sistema de despacho que esta compañía desarrolló, el cual llegó a ser un punto de referencia para la industria alrededor de los autos de alto desempeño. 

Pero el círculo de influencia de MOPAR no termina allí, como ya fue mencionado, la marca ha estado involucrada con los deportes a motor, una plataforma efectiva para construir una reputación fuerte y ha estado patrocinando pilotos y/o equipos en diferentes disciplinas o series, como (NHRA) Mello Yellow Drag Racing, (NASCAR) Cup / Camping World Trucks e incluso Fórmula D. 

Mi invitado para esta publicación encarna una de esas empresas de MOPAR: el Coupé Techo Duro 2 Puertas Dodge Challenger R/T - Auto MOPAR para Drift de 2009, un intento para expandir el atractivo del Challenger y poner un pie en la Serie Fórmula Drift (FD); fue revelado en el SEMA Show de 2008 y construido para el dos veces campeón de FD Samuel Hübinette. 

A pesar de la enorme expectativa generada por el lanzamiento y la considerable inversión y modificaciones desarrolladas para este vehículo, el proyecto fue abandonado y MOPAR cesó su financiamiento debido supuestamente a algunos problemas con la plataforma Challenger y su desempeño en las tareas de derrape; por esta misma razón, el Dodge Viper modificado por MOPAR para la Serie FD fue llamado a servicio como reserva... 

Hasta ahora, no he presentado un solo modelo en diecast de Johnny Lightning perteneciente al reciente renacimiento de esta marca en 2016; pero no te preocupes, he estado trabajando en esa tarea y en algún punto del futuro introduciré mis encantadores hallazgos... 

Para esta reseña, el modelo involucrado pertenece a la era pre-renacimiento, más precisamente a la transición entre la era Playing Mantis y la era TOMY (Takara), cuando RC2 tomó las riendas de Johnny Lightning (2004-2011) y siendo un artículo de una era transicional, tiene algunas características particulares que no encuentras en otras eras... 

En aquel tiempo, Johnny Lightning estaba experimentando una especie de "recesión" en términos de ventas y su rendimiento empezó a declinar, no por causa de problemas de calidad, sino en gran parte porque la vasta mayoría de coleccionistas estaba comprando modelos en diecast menos precisos y hasta cierto punto más baratos de Hot Wheels y Matchbox. 

Este asunto ha sido una limitación importante para las marcas enfocadas en el segmento Premium, aquellas realmente interesadas en el coleccionista adulto serio, que exige exactitud, realismo, excelente calidad en acabados y nivel de detalle, no demasiado enfocado en cosas nostálgicas, a menos que estas ofrezcan una ejecución de primera categoría. 

Si bien todavía colecciono modelos en diecast de las marcas de Mattel y los valoro en su justa medida, basado en sus características reales y la categoría a la cual pertenecen, no en opiniones de un mercado parcializado y propenso a la exageración; prefiero, de acuerdo con mi presupuesto, ahorrar dinero adicional con el fin de conseguir algo más recompensador y estoy bastante seguro que siempre es mejor tener más opciones que un odioso monopolio, por eso apoyo marcas diferentes a las de la corriente principal... 

Ahora, volviendo a mi invitado, lo conseguí con la ayuda de un amigo mío, colega coleccionista e importador hace alrededor de 6 años; pertenece a la Serie Johnny Lightning 2.0 - MOPAR de 2010, Lanzamiento 5, consistente en 4 modelos y notas que es un artículo transicional porque la presentación es diferente: venía dentro de una tarjeta gruesa pero más pequeña, impresa a todo color, el blíster también es más pequeño, pero el modelo, lo que realmente importa, todavía entrega la calidad que esperas de Johnny Lightning. 

Tiene construcción completa en diecast, con gran nivel de detalle y proporciones agradables, aunque las ruedas son más grandes de lo que debieran; el trabajo de pintura fue hecho en dos colores: plateado para el frente y azul cobalto desde el pilar A a la parte trasera, ambos con acabado satinado, la decoración de carreras con tampos y/o calcomanías es cercana a la del auto real, aunque los logos de patrocinadores no fueron incluidos, excepto obviamente MOPAR y es mucho mejor que en modelos relacionados de otras marcas, hay tampos adicionales para las luces frontales / de niebla y parrilla, deflector delantero, luces traseras de señal y de cola. 

Las ventanas son transparentes y el parabrisas recibió un tampo negro, los interiores fueron trabajados en negro, ofrece apertura de capó con motor detallado, las ruedas son multiparte con diseño de rimes realista y moderno 6 Spoke en cromado (similar a aquel del coche real y agradable para un Muscle Car contemporáneo), llantas en caucho labradas, no hay tarjeta de colección (otra señal de la era transicional) y fue hecho en China...

There are very little companies, regardless the economic sector to which they belong, that can flaunt a history of half a century in a world so changing as ours, particularly since early 20th century, let alone companies with more time in the market... 

Recently, in 2017, MOPAR celebrated its 80th anniversary and that’s a lot of time in the automotive industry; this company has made its reputation as an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer), priorly for Chrysler (Chrysler Group LLC) and currently for FCA US (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles), but also offers aftermarket service (maintenance and repair), as well as related activities... 

However, as you might expect regarding a company with a such a long history, MOPAR didn’t start as a global organization; its beginnings were so much humbler and believe it or not, the brand was born as a hybrid word created from "MOtor" and "PARts" and used for a new (at that time) line of antifreeze made by Chrysler Motor Parts. 

The brand’s growth began in the early 40s, when MOPAR produced parts for military vehicles used during the World War II, like the Willys’ Wheeler package for the legendary Jeep Willys MB. 

In the 50s, the birth of the famous HEMI engine by Chrysler helped greatly to the visibility of MOPAR specially in the world or races, where its products were seen in action by thousands of car enthusiasts and this impetus continued in the 60s and 70s, during the boom of Muscle Cars. 

While the manufacturing of car parts for high performance is the first thing that comes to mind when you’re thinking in MOPAR (well, at least if you love american cars, like I do), what actually consolidated this brand as the emporium it’s currently is the delivery system this company developed, which became a point of reference for the industry around high performance cars. 

But the circle of influence of MOPAR doesn’t end there, as it was already mentioned, the brand has been involved in motorsports, an effective platform to build a strong reputation and it has been sponsoring pilots and/or teams in different disciplines or series, like (NHRA) Mello Yellow Drag Racing, (NASCAR) Cup / Camping World Trucks and even Formula D. 

My guest for this publication embodies one of those MOPAR ventures: the 2009 Dodge Challenger R/T 2-Door Hardtop Coupe - MOPAR Drift Car, an attempt to expand the appeal of the Challenger and set foot in the Formula Drift (FD) Series; it was revealed at the 2008 SEMA Show and built for the two-times FD champion Samuel Hübinette. 

Despite the huge expectation generated by the release and the considerable investment and modifications developed for this vehicle, the project was dropped out and MOPAR stopped its financing due allegedly to some issues with the Challenger platform and its performance in the drifting tasks; for this very reason, the Dodge Viper modified by MOPAR for the FD Series was called to serve as reserve... 

Until now, I have not featured a single one diecast model by Johnny Lightning belonging to the recent revival of this brand in 2016; but don’t worry, I have been working in that task and at some point in the future I will introduce my lovely findings... 

For this review, the model involved belongs to the pre-revival era, more precisely to the transition between the Playing Mantis era and the TOMY (Takara) era, when RC2 took the reins of Johnny Lightning (2004-2011) and being an item from a transitional era, it has some particular features you don’t find in other eras... 

At that time, Johnny Lightning was experiencing a sort of "recession" in terms of sales and its performance started to decline, not because of quality issues, but largely because the vast majority of collectors were buying the less accurate and up to a point cheaper diecast models made by Hot Wheels and Matchbox. 

This subject has been an important limitation for brands focused in the Premium segment, those really interested in the serious adult collector, who demands accuracy, realism, excellent quality in finishes and level of detail, not too focused on nostalgic items unless they offer a top notch execution. 

While I still collect diecast models by the brands of Mattel and I value them in their right measure, based on their actual features and the category to which they belong, not on opinions of a biased and prone to exaggeration market; I prefer, according to my budget, to save additional money in order to get something more rewarding and I’m pretty sure it’s always better to have more options than a hateful monopoly, that’s why I support brands different to those of the mainstream... 

Now, returning to my guest, I got it with the help of a friend of mine, fellow collector and importer around 6 years ago; it belongs to the 2010 Johnny Lightning 2.0 - MOPAR Series, Release 5, consisting of 4 models and you notice it’s a transitional item because the presentation is different: it came inside a thick but smaller card, printed in full color, the blister is also smaller, but the model, what really matters, still delivers the high quality you expect from Johnny Lightning. 

It has full diecast construction, with great level of detail and nice proportions, although the wheels are bigger than what they should; the paint job was made in two colors: silver for the front and cobalt blue from the A pilar to the rear, both with satin finishing, the racing decoration with tampos and/or decals is close to the one of the actual car, albeit the sponsors logos were not included, except obviously MOPAR and it’s much better that in related models by other brands, there are additional tampos for the front / fog lights and grille, front spoiler, rear signal and tail lights. 

The windows are clear and the windshield received a black tampo, the interiors were worked in black, it offers opening hood with detailed engine, the wheels are multipart with realistic and modern 6 Spoke rims design in chrome (similar to that of the actual car and nice for a contemporary Muscle Car), styled rubber tires, there is no trading card as usual (another signal of the transitional era) and it was made in China...
