¿Qué vio un pequeño grupo de artesanos en una antigua iglesia ubicada en las calles Freemont y Jefferson, en Appleton, Wisconsin, un día de 1913?... 

Sabes, podría haber un montón de respuestas posibles a esta pregunta, pero aquí está la real: ellos vieron un lugar donde podían empezar su propio sueño, donde podían desarrollar su talento en una industria que estaba dando apenas sus primeros pasos... 

Entonces, este lugar inusual adquirió nueva vida y fue útil de nuevo, porque dos emprendedores: Humphrey y Dudley Pierce (padre e hijo) decidieron que era el lugar correcto para empezar su compañía, llamada simplemente Auto Body Works... 

Por 1917, este negocio familiar fue incorporado oficialmente, sus trabajos principales eran en chasis Ford Modelo T con el fin de crear camionetas; pero ese mismo año, la empresa, que ya tenía 11 empleados en su nómina, creció lo suficiente para necesitar un sitio más grande para continuar... 

Cerca de las vías férreas del noreste de Chicago y frente a la Avenida Pierce, las nuevas instalaciones fueron construidas; el negocio estuvo creciendo continuamente y para 1927, esta compañía estaba ganado reputación en el mercado de las carrocerías utilitarias especializadas, trabajando con camiones para trabajo mediano de Ford y Chevrolet. 

Si bien Auto Body Works Inc., estaba atendiendo dos segmentos: camiones utilitarios generales (principalmente furgones) y camiones utilitarios para empresas cerveceras, en 1939, los primeros camiones de bomberos fueron construidos, utilizando bombas provistas por Barton-American, para la Rural Fire Apparatus Company y al momento, era simplemente otra línea de productos. 

El final de la II Guerra Mundial marcó cambios en todos los sectores de la industria en los Estados Unidos, Auto Body Works Inc., no fue la excepción y por 1946 esta compañía desarrollo su propia línea de camiones de bomberos, con bombas suministradas por W.S. Darley & Co. 

Apenas dos años más tarde, la contratación de Doug Ogilvie para cubrir simultáneamente dos posiciones en esta empresa: ventas y diseño, dejaría un profundo legado, cuando llegó a ser presidente y para 1950, los camiones de bomberos construidos por Auto Body Works Inc., fueron comercializados como Pierce. 

Si hubo un año crucial para esta empresa, debería ser 1958, cuando en una reunión de negocios entre Doug Ogilvie y Art Moore (socio minoritario en Pitman Manufacturing), la idea de desarrollar el camión de bomberos Snorkel fue concebida. 

El camión de bomberos tipo Snorkel incluye un brazo telescópico con plataforma: esta configuración en realidad revolucionó el servicio de bomberos y si bien la división de carrocerías utilitarias todavía representaba 60% de las ventas, era claro el fortalecimiento de la división de camiones de bomberos, que fue catapultada en gran medida por el éxito del Snorkel. 

Los 60s vieron el arribo de Doug Ogilvie a la presidencia; el nombre de la empresa cambió dos veces: en 1960 cambió a Pierce Auto Body Works Inc., y luego, en 1968, cambió de nuevo a Pierce Manufacturing Inc.; también, la identidad visual / logotipo actual fue creada por esa época. 

Los 70s, por otro lado, fueron los tiempos cuando al división de camiones de bomberos fue transladada cerca a la Autopista 41 en Appleton, Wisconsin, a sus propias instalaciones; la compañía se expandió al mercado internacional e introdujo su primer camión de bomberos de cabina personalizada: el Pierce Arrow. 

Luego de la introducción del Dash (cabina personalizada abatible), el Lance (cabina personalizada dividida abatible), la primera plataforma aérea y la creación de tres plantas de producción, en 1988, el 75º aniversario de la empresa, fue decidido que Pierce Manufacturing se enfocaría en el negocio de los camiones de bomberos exlusivamente... 

Esta es solo parte de la interesante historia detrás de la compañía que creó mi invitado para esta publicación: la Máquina de Bomberos de Trabajo Pesado Pierce Dash CF Eje Trasero Sencillo de 1999, una Máquina de Bomberos de Cabina Personalizada Tipo 1 (Extinción de Incendios Estructurales en la Ciudad), que representa la corriente principal en el diseño de camiones de bomberos para el mercado norteamericano; quizás en una publicación futura introduciré más información sobre este asunto que me fascina... 

En mi barrio, relativamente cerca de donde vivo, está localizada la estación de bomberos principal de este sector y probablemente una de las más grandes de mi ciudad natal: Bogotá, D.C.; pero curiosamente, en mis años mozos, no me tomé el tiempo de visitarla y darle un vistazo de cerca a los impresionantes camiones de bomberos en servicio... 

Las instalaciones han cambiado con el tiempo, recuerdo que había un colegio funcionando cerca a esta estación de bomberos, pero hace algunos años, en junio de 2011, una nueva edificación completamente rediseñada fue inaugurada, haciendo el acceso al público más expedito; a propósito, el colegio fue transladado con el fin de hacer más espacio para el equipamiento, vehículos y las actividades usuales relacionadas con esta clase de cuerpos especiales. 

Hay cuatro o cinco camiones de bomberos disponibles para el servicio en emergencias, cada uno de una tipología diferente y uno de ellos es un Camión de Bomberos de Cabina Personalizada Doble Eje Trasero y Plataforma Aérea de 85’ por Pierce, el cual tiene algunas similitudes con mi invitado para esta reseña... 

Los visitantes regulares de mi blog ya sabrán que los camiones de bomberos y las máquinas de bomberos son una de mis debilidades más grandes así que, cada vez que tengo la oportunidad de consegir uno o algunos, a un precio razonable por supuesto, no hay vacilación de ningún tipo involucrada. 

Y allí los tienes, dos versiones de este fantástico artículo llamado Pierce Dash Fire Engine, un modelo lanzado en 2008 para las líneas Regulares de Matchbox, con al menos 22 iteraciones, 4 de ellas para líneas Adultas y el resto para la Línea Principal; curiosamente reclama ser escala 1:123, pero la verdadera escala en más grande (1:89), lo que es mejor para lograr una buena reproducción del vehículo real. 

Conseguí la primera en el mercado secundario, más precisamente en una tienda especializada de modelos en diecast, mientras que la otra fue adquirida a través de los canales regulares de distribución, en una tienda minorista local; ambas son parte de 5-Packs, pero una de ellas pertenece a la Serie Matchbox EMT 5-Pack de 2012, mientras que la otra pertenece a la Serie Matchbox Heroic Rescue de 2015. 

El nivel de detalle, proporción y realismo son sobresalientes, Matchbox es notable en ese sentido y ofrece un producto superior considerando el precio; con todo, la dosis de plástico en este modelo es algo decepcionante, pero al menos el uso es ingenioso, permitiendo combinaciones de color diferentes que son usuales en esta clase de vehículos... 

Parte de la carrocería fue hecha en diecast, mientras que la parte superior de la cabina, la sección utilitaria superior trasera y el chasis, que incluye la sección media, son plásticos; las partes plásticas son respectivamente: negro, negro y plateado para la primera muestra, y blanco, negro y cromado para la segunda muestra. 

La primera muestra presenta un trabajo de pintura en verde fluorescente con acabado satinado, complementado por tampos y/o calcomanías sobre los paneles laterales, en negro, amarillo, dorado y blanco; para la segunda muestra el trabajo de pintura fue hecho en rojo con acabado brillante y la decoración hecha con tampos y/o calcomanías, en blanco, negro, dorado y plateado; me encantan ambos, definitivamente tampos y/o calcomanías son mucho, mucho mejores que la grumosa impresión digital en inyección de tinta; agregué algunos toques de pintura aquí y allí, en plateado, dorado, rojo y azul (los dos últimos con acabado metalizado). 

En ambos casos los interiores fueron trabajados en negro, la selección de ruedas plásticas fue absolutamente apropiada: 5 Slots Muscle con labio cromado para la primera y Ringed Disc con labio negro / tapacubos cromados para la segunda; finalmente, ambos fueron hechos en Tailandia...

What saw a small group of craftsmen in a former church located at Freemont and Jefferson Streets, in Appleton, Wisconsin, one day of 1913 ???... 

You know, there could be a lot of possible answers to this question, but here is the real one: they saw a place where they could start their own dream, where they could develop their talent in an industry that was barely taking its first steps... 

Then, this unusual place acquired new life and it was useful again, because two entrepreneurs: Humphrey and Dudley Pierce (father and son) decided that it was the right place to start their company, called simply Auto Body Works... 

By 1917, this family business was officially incorporated, its main works were on chassis of Ford Model T in order to create trucks; but that very year, the company, that already had 11 employees on its payroll, grew enough to need a bigger place to continue... 

Near the Chicago Northwestern Railroad tracks and facing the Pierce Avenue, the new facilities were built; the business was growing steadily and for 1927, this company was earning a reputation in the specialized utility body market, working with medium duty trucks by Ford and Chevrolet. 

While Auto Body Works Inc., was catering two segments: general utility trucks (mainly box trucks) and utility trucks for beverages companies, in 1939, the first fire trucks were built, using pumps supplied by Barton-American, for the Rural Fire Apparatus Company and at the moment, it was just another line of products. 

The end of the World War II marked changes in all sectors of the industry in the United States, Auto Body Works Inc., was no exception and by 1946 this company developed its own line of fire apparatus, with pumps provided by W.S. Darley & Co. 

Barely two years later, the hiring of Doug Ogilvie to cover simultaneously two positions in this company: sales and design, would leave a profound legacy, when he became president and for 1950, the fire apparatus built by Auto Body Works Inc., were marketed as Pierce. 

If there was a crucial year for this company, it should be 1958, when in a business meeting between Doug Ogilvie and Art Moore (minority partner in Pitman Manufacturing), the idea to develop the Snorkel fire apparatus was conceived. 

The Snorkel type fire apparatus includes a telescopic arm with platform: this configuration actually revolutionized the fire service and while the utility bodies division still represented 60% of the sales, it was clear the strengthening of the fire apparatus division, which was catapulted largely by the success of the Snorkel. 

The 60s saw the arrive of Doug Ogilvie to the presidency; the company’s name changed twice: in 1960 it changed to Pierce Auto Body Works Inc., and then, in 1968, it changed again to Pierce Manufacturing Inc.; also, the current visual identity - logotype was created by that time. 

The 70s, on the other hand, were the times when the fire apparatus division was moved next to the Highway 41 in Appleton, Wisconsin, to its own facilities; the company expanded to the international market and introduced its first custom cab fire apparatus: the Pierce Arrow. 

After the introduction of the Dash (Custom Tilt Cab), the Lance (Custom Split-Tilt Cab), the first aerial platform and the creation of three production plants, in 1988, the 75th Anniversary of the company, it was decided that Pierce Manufacturing would focus on the fire apparatus business exclusively... 

This is only part of the interesting history behind the company that created my guest for this publication: the 1999 Pierce Dash CF Single Rear Axle Heavy Duty Fire Engine, a Type 1 (Structural Firefighting in the City) Custom Cab Fire Engine, that represents the mainstream in design of fire apparatus for the North American market; perhaps in a future publication I will introduce more information on this matter that fascinates me... 

In my neighborhood, relatively near where I live, is located the main fire station of this sector and probably one of the largest in my hometown: Bogotá, D.C.; but curiously, in my younger years, I didn’t take the time to visit it and give a close look to the awesome fire apparatus in service... 

The facilities have changed over time, I remember there was a school operating next to this fire station, but some years ago, in June 2011, a new building completely redesigned was inaugurated, making the access to public more expedited; by the way, the school was moved in order to make more room for the equipment, vehicles and the usual activities related with this kind of special corps. 

There are four or five fire apparatus available for service in emergencies, each one of different typology and one of them is a Custom Cab Double Rear Axle Aerial 85’ Platform Fire Truck by Pierce, which has some similarities with my guest for this review... 

The regular visitors of my blog will already know that fire trucks and fire engines are one of my greatest weaknesses so, every time I have the chance to get one or some, at a reasonable price of course, there is no hesitation of any kind involved. 

And there you have them, two versions of this fantastic item called Pierce Dash Fire Engine, a model released in 2008 for the Regular lines of Matchbox, with at least 22 iterations, 4 of them for Adult lines and the rest for the Mainline; curiously it claims to be 1:123 scale, but the true scale is bigger (1:89), which is better to achieve a good reproduction of the actual vehicle. 

I got the the first one in the secondary market, more precisely in a specialized diecast models store, while the other was acquired through the regular channels of distribution, in a local retail store; both are part of 5-Packs, but one of them belongs to the 2012 Matchbox EMT 5-Pack Series, while the other belongs to the 2015 Matchbox Heroic Rescue Series. 

The level of detail, proportion and realism are outstanding, Matchbox is remarkable in that sense and offers a superior product considering the price; yet, the dose of plastic in this model is kind of disappointing, but at least the use here is witty, allowing different color combinations which are usual in this kind of vehicles... 

Part of the body was made in diecast, while the top of the cabin, the top rear utilitarian section and the chassis, that includes the mid section, are plastic; the plastic parts are respectively: black, black and silver for the first sample, and white, black and chrome for the second sample. 

The first sample features a paint job in fluorescent green with satin finishing, complemented by tampos and/or decals on the side panels, in black, yellow, golden and white; for the second sample the paint job was made in red with glossy finishing and a decoration made with tampos and/or decals, in white, black, golden and silver; I love both, definitely tampos and/or decals are much, much better than the lumpy digital inkjet printing; I added some paint touches here and there in silver, golden, red and blue (the latter two with metallic finishing). 

In both cases the interiors were worked in black, the plastic wheels selection was absolutely appropriate: 5 Slots Muscle with chrome lip for the first one and Ringed Disc with black lip / chrome hubcaps for the second one; finally, both were made in Thailand...
