Si piensas que los autos no tienen nada que ver con las emociones, que no significan nada para sus dueños o que estas máquinas autopropulsadas no podrían generar las reacciones más vívidas y opuestas: de amor a odio, de admiración a desprecio, entonces probablemente vives en un universo diferente... 

Pero, afrontémoslo: los coches sí tienen que ver con las emociones, significan algo o mucho para sus dueños, provocan reacciones, sí, incluso reacciones opuestas o locas, quiero decir, he escuchado a personas hablando con sus carros, especialmente cuando dejan de funcionar... 

"Debes estar bromeando, tú, pequeño pedazo de ****** (chatarra), no me puedes dejar aquí en medio de la nada, con estos tipos no muy amigables a mi alrededor, no puedes hacerme esto, después de haberte mimado tanto, con tu mantenimiento más reciente (hace 15 años)"... 

Y luego, cuando sus autos finalmente funcionan de nuevo, precisamente cuando estos tipos care-**** (care-puño) están a punto de pedirte, ya sabes, instrucciones para llegar a la biblioteca, ellos se disculpan con sus coches y dicen...  

"Mmmmuuuack!... Por eso es que te amo, mi precioso, nunca me decepcionas, te debo otra amigo" y cosas hipócritas por el estilo, bueno, entonces es algo innegable: los carros y sus dueños interactúan en más de un sentido, tienen un vínculo. 

Sin embargo, ¿cómo todas estas emociones, reacciones, sentimientos (e incluso hipocrecía) están relacionadas con mi invitado para esta publicación: el Volkswagen Tipo 181 (Kurierwagen / Auto de Mensajería) de 1973 - 1975, un Subcompacto 4 Puertas Cabriolet / Convertible Hatchback?... 

Siendo honesto, no tengo una respuesta exacta para esa pregunta, me gustaría escarbar en la mente de uno de sus dueños, pero tengo la corazonada que detrás del nombre que recibió para el mercado norteamericano, hay definitivamente algo que tiene que ver con este extraño vínculo con los coches. 

El Volkswagen "Tipo 181" no sería un nombre demasiado atrayente para el modelo que la marca de Wolfsburgo introduciría en Estados Unidos para 1973, así que a alguien se le ocurrió la idea que "Cosa" sería una designación mucho más apropiada para este vehículo inusual. 

Si Volkswagen quería ofrecer un carro como ningún otro, prácticamente inclasificable, aunque fue comercializado en el mismo segmento del Toyota FJ40 y el Jeep CJ (?!), entonces la Cosa tenía las credenciales para ser ese auto. 

No obstante, lo que debería ser su mayor fortaleza, llegó a ser su más grande desventaja, porque probó ser una venta difícil, con cifras de ventas for debajo de las 26.000 unidades, durante su muy corta vida en el mercado norteamericano y eso es una lástima. 

Ahora, me pregunto si esta designación Cosa (también conocido como Trekker en el Reino Unido, Pescaccia en Italia o Safari en México y Suramérica) tenía una connotación positiva o negativa entre los compradores y el publico en general, en la época en que fue ofrecido para el mercado norteamericano. 

Lo que sí sé es que es la clase de vehículos que atrae miradas atentas y genera emociones, reacciones, sentimientos, incluso aquí en mi terruño, Colombia, donde todavía puedes ver unos pocos de ellos alrededor!... 

Cuando dije que valoro el trabajo de diseñadores de la Nueva Escuela en general y particularmente en Hot Wheels, lo dije en serio; después de todo, algunas veces ellos llegan con ideas frescas, nuevos enfoques, pero enfatizo ‘algunas veces’, porque, contrario a la creencia popular, ese no es su privilegio: diseñadores de la Vieja Escuela también pueden llegar con idea geniales e innovadoras... 

Mi invitado para esta reseña es uno de los muchos ejemplos en mi colección que muestra cuanto aprecio su trabajo, aunque tengo que admitir que fue sorpresivo para mí saber que fue desarrollado por Jun Imai, en la actualidad, ex-diseñador de la marca del logo llameante. 

Su trabajo es prolífico y variado, durante sus 14 años en HW, trabajó en modelos conceptuales / de diseñador / de fantasía, muscle cars y autos deportivos norteamericanos, VDUs, camionetas pickups, coches de lujo de tamaño completo, vanes, varios carros deportivos japoneses y unos pocos autos europeos, incluyendo este. 

El Volkswagen Tipo 181 tuvo su debút en 2009, para la Serie New Models; ha tenido al menos 9 iteraciones de las cuales solo una fue introducida en una línea de la categoría Adulta (Serie Boulevard). 

Fue ligeramente personalizado, con una postura más baja que el vehículo real y curiosamente, presenta las luces de cola usadas para los mercados europeos y no las luces de cola del Super Escarabajo para las Cosas importadas desde México, ya que fue en estas instalaciones donde los modelos para el mercado de los EE.UU. fueron construidos. 

Ofrece 5 partes, otro plus para este modelo y el techo de lona puede ser removido (debes tener cuidado al hacerlo), pero la ventana trasera de vinilo del auto real es sólida en esta reproducción, estoy bastante seguro que esto es debido a las estrictas regulaciones para coches de juguete y supongo que ya sabes que este es un coche de juguete, ¿cierto?... 

Esta Cosa pertenece a la Serie HW Premiere de 2009, parte de la Línea Principal, tiene carrocería en diecast, chasis plástico con acabado cromado y techo de lona en plástico negro, vale la pena mencionar que en 2016 el molde del chasis fue modificado para incluir los bómperes, lo cual está bien cuando tienes acabado cromado, pero supongo que ya sabes que el cromado será removido completamente de la Línea Principal, en un plazo no muy largo. 

El trabajo de pintura fue hecho en azul oscuro con acabado Metalflake y luce grandioso en este modelo, complementado por tampos y/o calcomanías para las luces frontales y de señal, también para las luces de cola, muy simple, muy limpio, pero muy atractivo. 

Los interiores para este modelo fueron trabajados en plateado, con un nivel de detalle apenas decente, el "timón" es horrible, el parabrisas es transparente; esta es probablemente una de las mejores selecciones para ruedas plásticas, presentando el super versátil diseño de rimes 5 Spoke en cromado y fue hecho en Malasia...

If you think that cars don’t have anything to do with emotions, that they don’t mean anything or that those self-propelled machines couldn’t generate the most vivid and opposite reactions: from love to hate, from admiration to despise, then you probably live in a different universe... 

But, let’s face it: cars do have to do with emotions, they mean something or a lot for their owners, they provoque reactions, yeah, even opposite or crazy reactions, I mean, I have heard people speaking with their cars, specially when they stop working... 

"You gotta be kidding me, you, little piece of **** (junk), you can’t leave me here in the middle of nowhere, with these not so friendly guys around me, you can’t do this to me, after I pampered you so much, with your most recent maintenance (15 years ago)"... 

And then, when their rides finally work again, precisely when these ****-face (fist-face) folks are about to ask you, you know, instructions to head to the library, they apologize with their rides and say...  

"Mmmmuuuack!... That’s why I love you, my precious, you never let me down, I owe you another one pal" and hypocritical stuff like that, well, then it’s something undeniable: cars and their owners interact in more than one sense, they have a link. 

However, how all these emotions, reactions, feelings (and even hypocrisy) are related with my guest for this publication: the 1973 - 1975 Volkswagen Type 181 (Kurierwagen / Courier Car), a Subcompact 4-Door Cabriolet / Convertible Hatchback?... 

Being honest, I don’t have an exact answer for that question, I would like to scratch in the mind of one of its owners, but I have the hunch that behind the name it received for the American market, there is definitely something that has to do with this strange link with cars. 

The Volkswagen "Type 181" wouldn’t be a too alluring name for the model that the brand from Wolfsburg would introduce in United States for 1973, so someone came up with the idea that "Thing" would be a much more appropriate designation for this unusual vehicle. 

If Volkswagen wanted to offer a car like no one else, virtually unclassifiable, although it was marketed in the same segment of the Toyota FJ40 and the Jeep CJ (?!), then the Thing had the credentials to be that car. 

Nonetheless, what should be its greatest strength, became its greatest drawback, because it proved to be a tough sell, with sales figures below 26,000 units, during its very short life in the American market and that’s a pity. 

Now, I wonder if this Thing designation (also known as Trekker in the United Kingdom, Pescaccia in Italy or Safari in Mexico and South America) had a positive or negative connotation among buyers and the general public, at the time it was offered for the American market. 

What I do know is that it’s the kind of vehicle that attracts stares and generates emotions, reactions, feelings, even here in my homeland, Colombia, where you can still see a few of them around!... 

When I said that I value the work of New School designers in general and particularly in Hot Wheels, I meant it; after all, they sometimes come up with fresh ideas, new approaches, but I emphasize ‘sometimes’, because, contrary to popular belief, that’s not their privilege: Old School designers can come up with cool and innovative ideas too... 

My guest for this review is one of the many examples in my collection that shows how I appreciate their work, albeit I have to admit that it was surprising for me to know that it was developed by Jun Imai, currently former designer of the brand of the flaming logo. 

His work is prolific and varied, during his 14 years at HW, he worked on concept / fantasy / designer models, American muscle cars and sports cars, SUVs, pickup trucks, full size luxury cars, vans, several Japanese sports cars and a few European rides, including this one. 

The Volkswagen Type 181 had its debut in 2009, for the New Models Series; it has had at least 9 iterations of which only one was introduced in a line of the Adult category (Boulevard Series). 

It was slightly customized, with a lower stance than the actual vehicle and curiously, it features the tail lights used for European markets and not the Super Beetle taillights for the Things imported from Mexico, since it was in these facilities where the models for the US market were built. 

It offers 5 parts, another plus for this model and the soft top can be removed (you must be careful on doing so), but the rear vinyl window of the actual car is solid in this reproduction, I’m pretty sure it’s due to the stringent regulations for toy cars and I guess you already know that this is a toy car, right?... 

This Thing belongs to the 2009 HW Premiere Series, part of the Mainline, it has diecast body, plastic chassis with chrome finishing and black plastic soft top, it’s worth mentioning that in 2016 the mold of the chassis was modified to include the bumpers, which is fine when you have chrome finishing, but I guess you already know that chrome will be removed altogether in the Mainline, in a not very long term. 

The paint job was made in dark blue with Metalflake finishing and it looks great on this model, complemented by tampos and/or decals for the front and signal lights, also the tail lights, very simple, very clean, but very appealing. 

The interiors for this model were worked in silver, with a barely decent level of detail, the "steering wheel" is awful, the windshield is clear; this is probably one of the best selections for plastic wheels, featuring the super versatile 5 Spoke rims design in chrome and it was made in Malaysia...
