La combinación de música y otra clase de artes con un componente más escénico, como: el teatro, el cine y la televisión, también conocida como musical, tiene un número de fans nada despreciable por todo el mundo, pero ese número no me incluye, lo cual me hace supongo una especie de renegado: La, La, Land... 

Pienso que esas artes son grandiosas en sí mismas y no me atrevería a negar el mérito involucrado en los musicales más famosos, es solo que no soporto a gente cantando con regularidad, mientras la historia se desarrolla: para ser honesto, me resulta aburrido... 

Solo para mencionar un ejemplo del impacto que los musicales han tenido en diferentes épocas en la cultura popular, hubo durante los 70s una sitcom (la contracción del término comedia de situaciones), llamada The Partridge Family, de la cual puedes decir que tuvo un éxito notable... 

En un tiempo cuando las sitcoms estaban ya establecidas como un tipo importante de contenido de entretenimiento, particularmente en la televisión, pero derivado de la radio, The Partridge Family es un producto muy distintivo que, con un presupuesto relativamente bajo, se las arregló para atraer audiencias y dejar una huella que aún hoy en día es sólida. 

Las vicisitudes de una viuda que vive en los suburbios y su familia, dedicada al negocio del espectáculo: a la música para ser preciso, es el núcleo de la historia y ya que no tenían un presupuesto ilimitado (ni la producción real, ni la familia ficcional, basada holgadamente en la familia Cowsills de la vida real, quienes eran también músicos), viajar en avión no era un opción. 

Y allí es precisamente donde el único elemento que me llama la atención de esta sitcom aparece, el vehículo usado para sus giras, basado en mi invitado para esta publicación: el Chevrolet Second Series Task Force 6800 (6802) de 1955 + Carrocería de Bus Escolar Superior (para 48 - 54 niños), un Bus Escolar para Trabajo Mediano Clase 6. 

Esta clase de vehículos no es un medio de transporte inusual para bandas o artistas en general, pero un bus escolar clásico pintado con un patrón abstracto basado en la obra creada por el artista holandés Pieter Cornelis Mondriaan (Piet Mondrian), puede ser considerado propiamente como algo único. 

Ahora, no sé con seguridad si fue algo deliberado para el equipo de producción de la serie de TV The Partridge Family, pero de hecho, la obra del artista plástico Piet Mondrian, estaba inspirada a menudo en la danza y la música. 

Si miras con ojo atento, verás en sus pinturas una cadencia musical en el manejo de colores, líneas, espacios y la composición general. 

El mismo bus escolar fue usado durante todo el tiempo que The Partridge Family estuvo al aire (1970 - 1974), su patrón "Mondrian" fue retocado varias veces y fue usado incluso en la película para TV (mini-serie de TV), transmitida en 1976, llamada Helter Skelter, por Lorimar Productions Inc., la cual estaba basada en un libro de Vincent Bugliosi que introduce una perspectiva interesante sobre los crimenes de la Familia Manson, ni más ni menos... 

Una familia musical y una familia psicótica involucradas en el prontuario de un "simple" bus escolar, bueno, digamos que es una mezcla retorcida que añade un montón de fascinación a un medio de transporte mundano, ¿no lo crees?... 

Cuando se trata de innovación, hay marcas que alardean de ella, apoyadas por costosas campañas de mercadeo, pero encontrarás que sus afirmaciones son falsas con solo una investigación superficial y luego hay marcas que muestran con hechos concretos su compromiso en este aspecto: Johnny Lightning pertenece al segundo grupo, con gran mérito debería añadir... 

¿Cuántas marcas de modelos de vehículos en diecast han desarrollado model kits en general y particularmente en escalas pequeñas?... 

En realidad, las marcas que ofrecen esta clase de producto, como: Airfix, ERTL, Wills Finecast, Auto-Kit, Barclay, GMP, Philly Mint / Franklin Mint, Spec Cast, Fubarbar, Wheel Works, Revell, Monogram, Pirate Models, Gabriel, Hubley, Testors, Schuco, Maisto, bBurago, Jada or MXueei, trabajan en escalas más grandes (1:8, 1:12, 1:18, 1:24, 1:25, 1:32, 1:43) y algunas de ellas ya están por fuera del negocio. 

Sin embargo, en escala 1:64 y más pequeñas, la lista se pone mucho, mucho más corta, con marcas como: Masudaya, DyDo, Kyosho (solo para modelos de Ferrari debido a restricciones de licenciamiento), M2 Machines y Johnny Lightning son las únicas ofreciendo vehículos en diecast como model kits (con artículos pertenecientes a las categorías Adulta, De Lujo y Premium), hasta donde sé. 

No obstante, Johnny Lightning difiere de sus competidores en que ofrece mejor calidad y más partes para ensamblaje que DyDo o Masudaya, calidad equivalente a M2 Machines y Kyosho, con igual o más partes en diecast respectivamente. 

Deberíamos tener en mente que Masudaya actualmente produce armas airsoft y DyDo se convirtió en Kyosho, la cual ya no produce model kits en diecast y sus lanzamientos actualmente son dispersos, también que M2 Machines solo produce model kits en diecast, en escala 1:64, desde 2013, pero Johnny Lightning lanzó esta clase de productos prácticamente desde 2000 - 2001. 

Como puedes ver en la imágenes que acompañan esta reseña, el Bus de The Partridge Family viene como model kit y varias modificaciones debieron ser realizadas en el molde con el fin de hacerlo adecuado para ensamblaje manual: el modelo regular está ensamblado con remaches, pero este usa 1 tornillo, el kit incluye las respectivas instrucciones (las cuales sugieren el uso de pegante transparente para las ventanas y el tablero de instrumentos, pero no es necesario), un mini-destornillador y las partes presentadas aquí. 

Lo conseguí en el mercado secundario, con la ayuda de un amigo mío, colega coleccionista e importador, hace más o menos 6 años; pertenece a la Serie The Partridge Family - Diecast Model Kit (The Partridge Family Bus) de 2001 y venía dentro de una tarjeta considerablemente más ancha que la usual para esta marca. 

Construcción completa en diecast (carrocería y chasis) es una obligación con Johnny Lightning, no es una reproducción exacta del bus real, pero está lo suficientemente cerca; el trabajo de pintura fue hecho en blanco con un acabado ligeramente satinado, complementado por una decoración sobre todos los paneles que mientras no es exacta tampoco, es muy similar y por su complejidad, debió ser hecha con calcomanías, pero luce como realizada con tampos (esta última opción no es imposible, pero sería demasiado difícil hacer coincidir cada cara de esta carrocería curvada). 

Las ventanas son transparentes, los interiores fueron trabajados en beige y bien detallados, como es usual; las ruedas multiparte presentan diseño de rimes 9 Slots Deep Dish al frente, azul atrás, llantas en caucho lisas y fue hecho en China...

The combination of music and other kind of arts with a more scenic component, like: theater, cinema and television, also known as musical, has a not inconsiderable number of fans all around the world, but that number doesn’t include me, which I guess makes me a sort of renegade: La, La, Land... 

I think those arts are great on their own and I wouldn’t dare to deny the merit involved in the most famous musicals, it’s just that I cannot stand people singing in a regular basis, while a story unfolds: to be honest, it’s boring for me... 

Just to mention an example of the impact that musicals have had at different times in the popular culture, there was during the 70s a sitcom (the contraction of the term situational comedy), called The Partridge Family, of which you can say it had a noticeable success... 

In a time when sitcoms were already established as a very important kind of entertainment content, particularly on television, but derived from radio, The Partridge Family is a very distinctive product that, with a relatively low budget, managed to attract audiences and leave an imprint that even nowadays is solid. 

The vicissitudes of a widow living in suburbia and her family, dedicated to the show business: music to be precise, is the core of the story and since they didn’t have unlimited budget (not the actual production, nor the fictional family, loosely resembling the real-life Cowsills family, who were also musicians), air traveling was not an option. 

And there is precisely were the only element that brings my attention to this sitcom appears, the vehicle used for their tours, based on my guest for this publication: the 1955 Chevrolet Second Series Task Force 6800 (6802) + Superior School Bus Body (48 - 54 pupils), a Medium Duty Class 6 School Bus. 

This kind of vehicles is not an unusual means of transportation for bands or artists in general, but a classical school bus painted with an abstract pattern based on the work created by the Dutch artist Pieter Cornelis Mondriaan (Piet Mondrian), can be properly considered as something unique. 

Now, I don’t know for sure if it was something purposive for the production team of The Partridge Family TV series, but in fact, the work of the plastic artist Piet Mondrian, was often inspired by dance and music. 

If you look with a keen eye, you will see in his paints a musical cadence in the management of colors, lines, spaces and the overall composition. 

The same school bus was used during all the time of The Partridge Family on the air (1970 - 1974), its "Mondrian" pattern was retouched several times and it was even used in a movie for TV (TV mini-series), aired in 1976, called Helter Skelter, by Lorimar Productions Inc., which was based on a book by Vincent Bugliosi that introduces an interesting perspective about the crimes of the Manson Family, no more no less... 

A musical family and a psycho family involved in the record of a "simple" school bus, well, let’s say it’s a twisted mix that adds a lot of fascination to a mundane means of transportation, don’t you think so?... 

When it comes to innovation, there are brands that brag about it, supported by expensive marketing campaigns, but you will find their claims are fake with just a shallow research and then there are brands that show with concrete facts their commitment in this aspect: Johnny Lightning belongs to the second group, with great merit I should add... 

How many brands of vehicle models in diecast have developed model kits in general and particularly in small scales?... 

Actually, the brands that offer this kind of product, like: Airfix, ERTL, Wills Finecast, Auto-Kit, Barclay, GMP, Philly Mint / Franklin Mint, Spec Cast, Fubarbar, Wheel Works, Revell, Monogram, Pirate Models, Gabriel, Hubley, Testors, Schuco, Maisto, bBurago, Jada or MXueei, work in larger scales (1:8, 1:12, 1:18, 1:24, 1:25, 1:32, 1:43) and some of them are already out of business. 

However, in 1:64 and smaller scales, the list gets way, way shorter, with brands like: Masudaya, DyDo, Kyosho (only for Ferrari models, due to licensing restrictions), M2 Machines and Johnny Lightning are the only ones offering diecast vehicles as model kits (with items belonging to the Adult, Deluxe and Premium categories), as far as I know. 

Nonetheless, Johnny Lightning differs from its competitors in that it offers better quality in the product and more parts for assembling than DyDo or Masudaya, equivalent quality than M2 Machines and Kyosho, with equal or more diecast parts respectively. 

We should bear in mind that Masudaya currently produces airsoft guns and DyDo became Kyosho, which no longer produces diecast model kits and its releases are sparse currently, also that M2 Machines only produces model kits in diecast, in 1:64 scale, since 2013, but Johnny Lightning released this kind of products virtually since 2000 - 2001. 

As you can see in the images accompanying this review, The Partridge Family Bus comes as model kit and several modifications should be made on the casting in order to make it suitable for manual assembling: the regular model is assembled with rivets, but this one uses 1 screw, the kit includes the respective instructions (which suggests the use of clear glue for the windows and dashboard, but it’s not necessary), a mini-screwdriver and the parts featured here. 

I got it in the secondary market, with the help of a friend of mine, fellow collector and importer, pretty much 6 years ago; it belongs to the 2001 The Partridge Family - Diecast Model Kit (The Partridge Family Bus) Series and it came inside a considerably wider card than the usual in this brand. 

Full diecast construction (body and chassis) is a must with Johnny Lightning, it’s not an exact reproduction of the actual bus, but it’s close enough; the paint job was made in white with slightly satin finishing, complemented by a decoration on all panels that while is not exact either, it’s very similar and by its complexity, it should be made with decals, but it looks like made with tampos (the latter option is not impossible, but it would be too difficult to match each side of this curved body). 

The windows are clear, the interiors were worked in beige and well detailed, as usual; the multipart wheels feature 9 Slots Deep Dish rims design in red in front, blue at the rear, slick rubber tires and it was made in China...
