Si tuviera que nominar una lista muy corta de los modelos más prominentes en la Kustom Kulture de los Estados Unidos, tal lista incluiría los siguientes autos: 1932 / 1933 / 1934 Ford Coupé, 1940 Willys Coupé, 1955 / 1956 / 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air, 1950 Buick Roadmaster, 1955 Chrysler C300 / Desoto Fireflite / Dodge Custom Royal, 1951 Hudson Hornet y no puede dejarse por fuera al 1949 / 1950 / 1951 Mercury Coupé... 

Por supuesto, esta lista omite muchos otros coches grandiosos, camionetas pickup, vanes, coupés-utilidad, vagonetas familiares y motocicletas creados durante los 30s, 40s y 50s, que fueron el lienzo para varios personalizadores de culto durante los 60s, 70s y 80s particularmente, aún más, tal vez hay un poquitín de arbitrariedad en la selección, pero que los incluidos aquí fueron EL objeto de trabajos fantásticos para carros personales, está fuera de discusión... 

Todos ellos eran ya estupendos productos de fábrica, que de alguna manera cautivaron la imaginación y el deseo de la gente, también fueron desarrollos innovadores, ya sea en términos de ingeniería, características de confort y conveniencia, diseño general o todo lo anterior. 

Sin embargo, resulta que el Mercury Coupé es fácilmente el modelo individual más asociado con la Kustom Kulture jamás creado y mi invitado para esta publicación: el Mercury Eight Coupé (9CM) de 1949, moderadamente personalizado como un Lowrider, un Coupé de Tamaño Completo 2 Puertas De Lujo, es un ejemplo muy adecuado de como este auto contribuyó a diferentes aspectos de la cultura automotriz en Estados Unidos y otros países alrededor del mundo. 

Ya sea como un "clásico" Custom, un Lowrider, un Rat Rod, un Lead Sled, un Hot Rod y sus variantes o combinaciones, es un coche bastante versátil, funcionando como inspiración para todos esos estilos, visiones diferentes, subculturas del auto y bueno, el diseño mismo de este modelo se apartó sustancialmente de la generación anterior, también conocida como estilo pre-guerra (II Guerra Mundial) y expuso el mercado a algo nuevo, refrescante... 

Los cambios sustanciales fueron introducidos en todas las divisiones de carros de pasajeros, a saber Ford, Mercury y Lincoln; en el caso de Mercury, la presencia de este vehículo era visualmente masiva, imponente, las líneas de la carrocería fluyen y fueron bastante suavizadas, el auto es más largo, más ancho y más bajo, luce mucho más elegante que su contraparte de 1948. 

Su estilo también difiere notablemente de los Ford y Lincoln de esa era: la silueta bulbosa, sexi, extravagante de este coche era tan delirante, que su éxito en ventas no se hizo esperar; pero más importante aún, fue de alguna forma el sueño hecho realidad para generaciones de personalizadores de buen gusto, reconocidos a nivel mundial y para un clan de dueños orgullosos, que querían algo clásico y con todo atrevido en sus garajes... 

Fundada en 2007 y con la primera tanda de productos lanzados al mercado en 2008, M2 Machines, una empresa creada por Chris y Ken Leong, en Azusa, California, tuvo en mi opinión un comienzo más bien tímido en la industria de diseñadores, desarrolladores y fabricantes (por subcontratación, como es el estándar en este y muchos otros segmentos) de réplicas a escala en diecast dirigidas a coleccionistas adultos... 

Quizás algunas personas en esta afición no están conscientes del hecho que M2 Machines es una especie de "retoño" de Funline Corporation, creadores de la marca Muscle Machines y sus fabulosos productos en diecast; así que M2M no fue precisamente una recién llegada en esta industria, pero luego que los hermanos Leong vendieron su emprendimiento Muscle Machines / Funline Corp. a Action Performance Company, supongo que querían experimentar algo más, algo diferente dentro de la misma línea de productos... 

El enfoque para M2 Machines ha sido en vehículos lanzados alrededor de los 50s, 60s y 70s, sobretodo modelos que habían sido descuidados por otros fabricantes de réplicas a escala, lo cual es una decisión sensata y hasta aquí sus portavoces no han manifestado interés de la compañía en vehículos más recientes... 

Después que recibí como regalo un modelo de M2 Machines (del cual puedes leer aquí), estaba muy interesado en estas réplicas, así que encontré los primeros ejemplos de estos productos en una tienda de juguetes y coleccionables local ya extinta, apenas dos años luego que M2 Machines fuera introducida al mercado de los Estados Unidos y estaba encantado. 

Honestamente, no pensé que tal cantidad de detalles y nivel de calidad general pudieran ser logrados en esa escala, fue realmente revelador y me ayudó bastante a tomar la decisión de incluir algunas de estas pequeñas maravillas en mi colección. 

Ahora, no todo ha sido color de rosa en mi experiencia con esta marca, he sido testigo de algunos problemas de calidad, pero tengo una muy buena opinión de M2 Machines simplemente porque hasta ahora ha ofrecido una buena relación calidad / precio y para mí como coleccionista eso es lo que realmente cuenta; por otro lado, afortunadamente M2M no está tratando, en vano, de abrumarte o manipularte con mercadeo fraudulento y eso es algo que realmente aprecio también... 

Conseguí mi invitado para esta reseña a través del mercado secundario (esta marca nunca ha estado disponible en el mercado primario local), con la ayuda de un amigo mío, colega coleccionista e importador / vendedor privado, hace más de 8 años. 

Pertenece a la Serie Auto-Dreams de 2012, Premier Edition, Lanzamiento TK01 y los gráficos (pinstripe) fueron diseñados por Tom Kelly, un pinstriper legendario, pintor y artista automotriz de la buena vieja escuela, originario del sureste de California. 

Ya que me encanta esta clase de arte y el estilo Lowrider de la Serie, fue fácil para mí enamorarme de ella, aunque curiosamente no aparece en el catálogo de productos del sitio web oficial de la marca, es el primer set en esta Serie; el modelo ofrece construcción completa en diecast con gran nivel de detalle y las característricas de apertura por las cuales M2 Machines y sus Ediciones Premier / Premium son conocidas, a saber, apertura de capó y puertas. 

El trabajo de pintura fue hecho en púrpura con un acabado escarcha metálica muy sutil y complementado por una decoración hermosa, atrevida y al mismo tiempo delicada, presentando obviamente pinstripes, con tampos y/o calcomanías sobre todos los paneles de la carrocería, excepto el techo, en blanco (hay solo un ligero defecto en el pinstripe de la tapa del baúl), tampos adicionales fueron incluidos para las molduras de la carrocería y ventanas, así como para las manijas de las puertas. 

Hay varios insertos plásticos para los faros delanteros y sus molduras, parrilla frontal, emblema encima del capó, bómperes frontal y trasero, tubos y punteras de escape laterales, con acabado cromado, el chasis fue pintado en negro con acabado brillante. 

La bahía del motor está detallada y pintada, los interiores son bien detallados también, trabajados en negro, con acentos pintados en blanco, las ruedas multiparte ofrecen diseño de rimes realista Moon Disc (Disco Lunar) con acabado cromado, llantas labradas en caucho sintético, algo delgadas, con bandas blancas, muy apropiadas y elegantes; hay una base de exhibición, como es habitual con estas Series, en negro, la parte superior fue pintada en plateado y presenta un "patrón de diamante" muy bonito, con el nombre del modelo impreso en amarillo y fue hecho en China...

If I had to nominate a very short list of some the most prominent models in the Kustom Kulture of United States, such list would include the following cars: 1932 / 1933 / 1934 Ford Coupe, 1940 Willys Coupe, 1955 / 1956 / 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air, 1950 Buick Roadmaster, 1955 Chrysler C300 / Desoto Fireflite / Dodge Custom Royal, 1951 Hudson Hornet and it can’t be left out the 1949 / 1950 / 1951 Mercury Coupe... 

Of course, this list omits many other great cars, pickup trucks, vans, coupes-utility, station wagons and motorcycles created during the 30s, 40s and 50s, that were the canvas for several cult customizers during the 60s, 70s and 80s particularly, even more, maybe there is a bit of arbitrariness in the selection, but that the ones included here were THE subject of fantastic works for personal rides, is out of question... 

All of them were already great products from factory, that somehow captivated the imagination and desire of people, also they were innovative developments, either in terms of engineering, comfort and convenicence features, overall design or all the above. 

However, it turns out that the Mercury Coupe is easily the single model most associated with the Kustom Kulture ever created and my guest for this publication: the 1949 Mercury Eight Coupe (9CM), moderately customized as a Lowrider, a Full Size 2-Door Luxury Coupe, is a very suitable example of how this car contributed to different aspects of the automotive culture in United States and other countries around the world. 

Either as a "classic" Custom, a Lowrider, a Rat Rod, a Lead Sled, a Hot Rod and their variants or combinations, it’s a quite versatile ride, working as inspiration for all those different styles, visions, car subcultures as a whole and well, the design itself of this model departed substantially from the previous generation, also known as pre-war (World War II) styling and exposed the market to something new, refreshing... 

The substantial changes were introduced in all the passenger cars divisions, namely Ford, Mercury and Lincoln; in the case of the Mercury, the presence of this vehicle was visually massive, imponent, the lines of the bodywork flow and were quite smoothed, the car is longer, wider and lower, it looks way sleeker that its 1948 counterpart. 

Its styling also differs noticeably from that of the Ford and Lincoln of that era: the bulbous, sexy, extravagant shape of this car was so delusional, that its success in sales was immediate; but more importantly, it was somehow the dream come true for generations of tasteful, recognized customizers worldwide and for a clan of proud owners, who wanted something classic and yet bold in their garages... 

Founded in 2007 and with the first batch of products released to the market in 2008, M2 Machines, a company created by Chris and Ken Leong, in Azusa, California, had in my opinion a rather timid start in the industry of designers, developers and manufacturers (by outsourcing, as it’s the standard in this and many other segments) of diecast scale replicas intended for adult collectors... 

Perhaps some people in this hobby are not aware of the fact that M2 Machines was a sort of "offshoot" of Funline Corporation, creators of the brand Muscle Machines and its fabulous products in diecast; so M2M was not precisely a newcomer in this industry, but after the brothers Leong sold their Muscle Machines / Funline Corp. ventures to Action Performance Company, I guess they wanted to experience something else, something different within the same line of products... 

The focus for M2 Machines has been on vehicles released around the 50s, 60s and 70s, mostly models that have been neglected by other manufacturers of scale replicas, which is a sensible decision and so far its spokesmen have not manifested interest of the company in more recent vehicles... 

After I received as gift a model by M2 Machines (of which you can read here), I was very interested in these replicas, so I found the first examples of these products in a now extincted local toys and collectibles store, barely two years after M2 Machines was introduced to the market of United States and I was delighted. 

Honestly, I didn’t think that such amount of details and overall level of quality could be achieved on that scale, it was truly revealing and it helped me quite a bit to make the decision to include some of these little marvels in my collection. 

Now, not everything has been rosy in my experience with this brand, I have witnessed some quality issues, but I have a very good opinion of M2 Machines just because until now it has offered good value for money and for me as collector that’s what really counts; on the other hand, fortunately M2M is not trying, to no avail, to overwhelm or manipulate you with fraudulent marketing and that’s something I really appreciate too... 

I got my guest for this review through the secondary market (this brand has never been available in the local primary market), with the help of a friend of mine, fellow collector and importer / private seller, more than 8 years ago. 

It belongs to the 2012 Auto-Dreams Series, Premier Edition, Release TK01 and the graphics (pinstripe) were designed by Tom Kelly, a legendary pinstriper, painter and automotive artist of the good old school, originary from Southern California. 

Since I love this kind of art and the Lowrider style of the Series, it was easy for me to fall in love with it, although curiously it doesn’t appear in the catalog of products of the official website, it’s the first set offered in this Series; the model offers full diecast construction with great level of detail and the opening features for which M2 Machines in its Premier / Premium Editions are known, namely, opening hood and doors. 

The paint job was made in a purple with a very subtle metal flake finishing and complemented by a beautiful, daring and at the same time delicate decoration, featuring obviously pinstripes, with tampos and/or decals on all the panels of the body, except the roof, in white (there is only a little blemish in the pinstripe of the trunk lid), additional tampos were included for body and windows moldings, as well as for door handles. 

There are several plastic inserts for the headlights and their moldings, front grille, emblem on top of the hood, front and rear bumpers, side exhausts pipes and tips, with chrome finishing, the chassis was painted in black with glossy finishing. 

The engine bay is detailed and painted, the interiors are well detailed too, worked in black, with accents painted in white, the multipart wheels offer realistic Moon Disc rims design with chrome finishing, styled synthetic rubber tires, somewhat skinny, with white walls, very appropriate and sleek; there is a display base, as usual with these Series, in black, the top was painted in silver and features a very nice "diamond pattern", with the name of the model printed in yellow and it was made in China...
