No has escuchado últimamente, hasta la saciedad, como las personas (especialmente las más jóvenes) dicen: "la nostalgia es una señal de que te estás haciendo viejo..." y el tono que usan para dicha afirmación es bastante despectivo, como si la nostalgia fuera una especie de delito o el refugio de los parias y sensibleros...
Esta generación está hipnotizada por el presente, lo inmediato; para ellos, todo tiende a volverse obsoleto más rápidamente, los medios los están bombardeando con información, instándolos a consumir, a actuar más y pensar menos, y en la mente de la gente como ellos, no hay lugar para los buenos recuerdos del pasado o lo que llamamos simplemente nostalgia...
Ciertamente vivo en esta generación, pero no creo que el presente sea alentador y el futuro no luce para mí promisorio, porque a diferencia de la mayoría de personas de esta generación, puedo ver claramente que, cuanto más avanzamos en ciencia y conocimiento, más retrocedemos en lo moral y ético...
Además, soy un tipo orgullosamente anacrónico, no solo por causa de mi afición (los fundamentos del coleccionismo están profundamente arraigados en la nostalgia), sino porque es parte de mi carácter y conozco varios ejemplos donde la nostalgia ha dado vida a ideas excelentes en el presente...
Hay autos y luego hay leyendas, no todos los vehículos están destinados a convertirse en buenos recuerdos; ya sea que ames los coches o no, puedes atestiguar que cientos de vehículos, de diferentes tipologías, son producidos cada año, pero la mayoría pasan desapercibidos.
Sin embargo, cuando el Volkswagen Escarabajo es el asunto a discutir, no hay forma en que pudieras considerarlo un carro irrelevante, simplemente porque hubo varias circunstancias en la historia, que lo hicieron un vehículo excepcional.
Tomó más de 10 años al Escarabajo, convertirse en leyenda; por supuesto, algunos autos fueron producidos por un solo año y alcanzaron dicho estatus, pero no estamos hablando de un coche a medida, hecho para la gente asquerosamente rica, NO, este carro fue hecho para el pueblo.
Los 60s fueron la edad dorada del Escarabajo; en esa época, este modelo fue increíblemente exitoso, a pesar de la ruda competencia con otros vehículos en el mismo segmento, de Japón, Estados Unidos y Reino Unido.
Con algunos altibajos, la producción de lo que podríamos llamar la "primera generación" del Volkswagen Escarabajo o el Tipo 1, continuó hasta 2003, cuando el último modelo fabricado (No. 21’529.464) fue enviado al museo de la compañía en Wolfsburg.
Tiene tal carga de nostalgia y tal buena reputación a nivel mundial, que su fama estuvo y está todavía intacta, y por allá en 1991, un estudio de diseño de Volkswagen en Simi Valley, California, desarrolló lo que tres años después sería llamado Concepto 1...
Estoy planeado desarrollar este tema interesante en publicaciones futuras, donde el también conocido como Nuevo Escarabajo, recibirá más amor de mi parte así que, no se preocupen por mi introducción "errática", habrá más información sobre él =PPPPP...
Ya que podrías ser un nostalgia-fóbico (porque las buenas cosas del pasado no son geniales en tu "experta" opinión...), yo estaré proclamando que ser nostálgico no es un crimen; por el contrario, es algo de lo que deberías sentirte orgulloso...
No obstante, hay algo que sí considero un crimen y una práctica odiosa, que está contaminando nuestra amada afición y que afecta la marca responsable por el modelo en diecast publicado hoy: Matchbox...
Si tú coleccionas esta marca, como lo hago yo, prácticamente sin importar el lugar donde vivas, habrás podido notar una reducción sustancial de las existencias de modelos de Matchbox, en tarjeta individual, en las estanterías de los minoristas más grandes.
En mi país, las únicas presentaciones que puedes conseguir para productos de MBX, son los 5-Packs y los sets temáticos (con hasta 10 artículos) e incluso estas presentaciones se están volviendo escasas; tanto, que estuve a punto de pensar que esta marca desaparecería pronto...
He notado que Hot Wheels está descuidando sistemáticamente a Matchbox, pero eso no explica la súbita "desaparición" de modelos de MBX en tarjeta individual así que, hice mi propia investigación con colegas coleccionistas, que también notaron esta anomalía y compartiré lo que encontré...
Los tiendas mayoristas principales, usualmente tienen analistas de compras, la gente encargada de recomendar lo que debe o no debe ser adquirido; bien, personas trabajando al interior de los mayores distribuidores de Hot Wheels (compinches de los acaparadores y especuladores), están vendiendo la idea, que los productos de Matchbox NO son "comerciales" o "fáciles de vender"...
De este modo, estos parásitos están influenciando maliciosamente a los analistas de compras, para adquirir más productos de Hot Wheels y así, ellos pueden abastecer a sus cómplices con más modelos de ciertas series de esta última marca, que luego son revendidos a precios obscenos...
Así es como funciona, esta plaga está perjudicando tanto a los coleccionistas de Hot Wheels, como a los coleccionistas de Matchbox, y se pueden dar el lujo de hacer buen dinero con gente estúpida, que quiere alardear y ser admirada, ganando una reputación de pacotilla como coleccionistas, ¡cuando en realidad están simplemente financiando una horda de estafadores!...
Suena lindo, ¿verdad?...
Cosas como ésta, me asquean, pero esto no me impedirá continuar coleccionando; simplemente me hará más selectivo y también, me ha enseñado a establecer ciertos límites en lo que colecciono, pagando lo que considero justo y evitando comprar artículos vendidos por acaparadores y/o especuladores...
Quizás sea una situación pasajera, ójala y dejando a un lado (por el momento) este tema desagradable, me enfocaré en este divertido y atractivo modelo hecho por Matchbox.
Es de una época cuando esta marca estaba disponible, sin los inconvenientes anteriormente mencionados; pertenece a la Serie Daddy’s Dreams (un nombre muy evocador), venía dentro de una tarjeta agradablemente diseñada (mejor que las tarjetas de Hot Wheels) y hubo cuatro modelos en esta línea.
No me preguntes cómo exactamente este modelo, el Volkswagen Nuevo Escarabajo Convertible de 2003, fue lanzado originalmente tres años antes que el vehículo real; pero mi conjetura es que la variante Convertible fue planificada desde el desarrollo inicial del Concepto 1; sin embargo, fue lanzada cuando el mercado estaba "preparado" para ésta...
El modelo tiene carrocería en diecast y chasis en plástico negro, gran trabajo en este molde y todo muy bien proporcionado; los interiores en negro tienen un nivel sobresaliente de detalle (comparable con modelos de Kyosho, por ejemplo), finamente texturizados con acabados mate y semimate, la cubierta para el techo retráctil recibió un tampo blanco del logo de Matchbox.
Otra característica que realmente aprecio aquí, es el trabajo en las luces delanteras, con insertos plásticos, los cuales incrementan el realismo de la pieza y le dan ese encanto extra de los modelos antiguos de Matchbox misma y Majorette; algo que no ves muy a menudo, porque esto también incrementa los costos de producción.
El trabajo de pintura fue hecho en plateado metalizado, complementado por una decoración algo "atómica" incluyendo el nombre Beetle y tres bucles entrelazados, en borgoña, azul hielo y verde oliva, sobre los paneles laterales y el capó, el parabrisas también recibió toques de pintura plateada metalizada; tiene ruedas plásticas con diseño muy apropiado de rimes, cromados y fue hecho en China...

ENGLISH Haven’t you heard lately, ad nauseum, how people (specially the younger ones) say: "nostalgia is a signal that you’re getting too old..." and the tone they use for such statement is quite derogative, just like nostalgia were a sort of felony or the refuge of the outcasts and maudlin... This generation is mesmerized by the present, the immediate; for them, everything tends to become outdated more quickly, the media are bombing them with information, urging them to consume, to act more and think less and in the mind of people like them, there is no place for good memories from the past or what we call simply nostalgia...
Certainly I live in this generation, but I don’t think the present is encouraging and the future doesn’t seem to me promising, because unlike the most people of this generation, I can see clearly that the more we advance in science and knowledge, the further back we go in the moral and ethical...
Also, I’m a proudly anachronistic guy, not only because of my hobby (the fundamentals of collectionism are deeply rooted in nostalgia), but because is part of my nature and I know several examples where nostalgia has given life to excellent ideas in the present...
There are cars and then there are legends, not all vehicles are meant to become good memories; either you love cars or not, you can witness that hundreds of vehicles, of different typologies, are produced each year, but most of them go unnoticed.
However, when the Volkswagen Beetle is the issue to be discussed, there is no way you could consider it an irrelevant car, just because there were several circumstances in the history, that made it an exceptional vehicle.
It took more than 10 years for the Beetle to become a legend; of course, some cars were produced for one single year and reached such status, but we are not talking about a bespoke vehicle, made only for the disgustingly rich people, NO, this car was made for the people.
The 60s were the golden age of the Beetle; at that time, this model was incredibly successful, despite the rude competition with other vehicles in the same segment from Japan, United States. and United Kingdom.
With some ups and downs, the production of what we could call the "first generation" Volkswagen Beetle or the Type 1, continued until 2003, when the last model manufactured (No. 21,529,464) was delivered to the company’s museum in Wolfsburg.

Since you could be a nostalgia-phobic (’cause the good things from the past are not cool in your "expert" opinion...), I will be proclaiming that being nostalgic is not a crime; conversely, is something of what you should be proud...
Nonetheless, there is something that I do consider a crime and an obnoxious practice, which is polluting our beloved hobby and that affects the brand responsible for the diecast model published today: Matchbox...
If you collect this brand, like I do, virtually regardless the place where you live, you may have noticed a substantial reduction of the stock of Matchbox models, in individual card, on the shelves of major retailers.
In my country, the only presentations you can get for MBX products, are the 5-Packs or the thematic sets (with up to 10 items) and even these presentations are becoming scarce; so much, that I was about to think that this brand would disappear soon...
I have noticed that Hot Wheels is systematically neglecting Matcbox, but that doesn’t explain the sudden "disappearance" of MBX models in individual card so, I made my own research with fellow collectors, who also perceived this anomaly and I will share what I found...
The major wholesale stores usually have purchasing analysts, the people responsible for recommending what should or should not be acquired; well, people working inside the major Hot Wheels distributors (cronies of the hoarders and scalpers), are selling the idea, that Matchbox products are NOT"commercial" or "easy to sell"...
Thereby, these parasites are influencing archly to the purchasing analysts, to acquire more Hot Wheels products and so, they can supply their accomplices with more models of certain series of the latter brand, which then are re-sold at obscene prices...
That’s how it works, this plague is harming both to Hot Wheels collectors, as to Matchbox collectors, and they can afford to making good money with stupid people, who want to brag and be admired, earning a shoddy reputation as collectors, when actually they are just financing a horde of swindlers!...
Sounds nice, right?...
Stuff like this, disgusts me, but it will not prevent me continue collecting; it will just make me more selective and also, it has taught me to establish certain limits into what I collect, paying what I consider fair and avoiding to buy items sold by hoarders and/or scalpers...
Perhaps it’s a temporary situation, hopefully and leaving aside (by the moment) this nasty topic, I will focus on this funny and attractive model made by Matchbox.
It’s from a time when this brand was available, without the drawbacks aforementioned; it belongs to the Daddy’s Dream Series (a very evocative name), it came inside a nicely designed card (better than Hot Wheels cards) and there were other four models in this line.
Don’t ask me how exactly this model, the 2003 Volkswagen New Beetle Convertible, was released originally three years before the actual vehicle; but my guess is that this variant was planned from the initial development of the Concept 1; however, it was released only when the market was "prepared" for it...
The model has diecast body and black plastic chassis, great work on this cast and everything very well proportioned; the interiors in black have an outstanding level of detail (comparable with models by Kyosho, for instance), finely texturized with matte and semi-matte finishes, the cover for retractable roof received a white tampo of the Matchbox logo.
Another feature I really appreciate here, is the work on the head lights, with plastic inserts, which increase the realism of the piece and give it that extra charm of the old models made by Matchbox itself and Majorette; something you don’t see so often, because it also increases the production costs.
The paint job was made in metallic silver, complemented by a kind of "atomic" decoration including the Beetle name and three loops interlaced, in burgundy, ice blue and olive green, on the side panels and the hood, the windshield also received metallic silver paint touches; it has plastic wheels with very appropriate rims design, chrome and it was made in China...

At times I feel that more youngest these days are taking things for granted and emo. We have entered an era of strawberry generation where they look good but bruise easily.
I think feeling nostalgic is a privilege and it's a proof that we truly lived and now vivid memories of the past.
There are some things in life or technology than we want to improve on the old and yet retain the good old design.
Volkswagen New Beetle is one good example. Its innovating from the first Beetle like evolution to suit our new lifestyle. Nice die-cast by Matchbox the dash of silver and astronomical logo.
i like the way you expressed your point of view, on the current generation and totally agree with that... the younger ones are not used to fight for what is right or what is worthy, they have little or zero tolerance for failure and don’t have much respect for the good things, made in the past...
i think also, that the New Beetle or Concept 1, was a great design exercise, to reinvent the Beetle, developed originally en Europe (Germany), but now fancied by american stylists... the outcome is pretty modern and retro, at the same time... some people don’t like it, but i love it !!!... =D

I think this hobby goes way beyond buying stuff here and there: anybody with money can buy collectibles, but not anybody becomes collector by doing so. I think as well that this hobby is, more than anything, about knowledge, about making sense of what happens around us and just like any other kind of knowledge, if it’s devoid of ethics, is worthless. I like to address topics around collectionism, including, but not limited to: history, industry, forums, groups, collectors, distributors, sellers, etc. I’m fully aware that criticism is essential for our hobby: everything is susceptible of improvement and we the collectors demand quality, but the industry around it doesn’t necessarily shares that vision. After all, well-targeted criticism always helps to detect failures and correct them, it’s like critical thinking: it helps you see things as they really are and not just as how they are presented to you. If you are someone who likes to look beyond the surface, welcome, if that is not the case, continue at your own risk...

At times I feel that more youngest these days are taking things for granted and emo. We have entered an era of strawberry generation where they look good but bruise easily.
I think feeling nostalgic is a privilege and it's a proof that we truly lived and now vivid memories of the past.
There are some things in life or technology than we want to improve on the old and yet retain the good old design.
Volkswagen New Beetle is one good example. Its innovating from the first Beetle like evolution to suit our new lifestyle. Nice die-cast by Matchbox the dash of silver and astronomical logo.
