1966 Oldsmobile Toronado Luxury Sport Coupe 2005 Poker Series II 7/12 Diecast Scale 1:71 by Johnny Lightning

A pesar de que Oldsmobile fue la marca más antigua de fabricantes de autos en América y una de las más antiguas en el mundo entero, diseñó y creó algunos de los autos más visionarios jamás conocidos. 

Es curioso como estamos acostumbrados a relacionar las ideas revolucionarias con las mentes más jóvenes cuando, de hecho, solo la experiencia y conocimiento que vienen con los años, te dan los elementos de juicio para desarrollar soluciones innovadoras... 

La innovación no es un asunto de la ocurrencia casual de un novato recién llegado, tampoco el resultado de una conversación trivial de cinco minutos, al menos no en la vida real. 

El desarrollo de un vehículo adelantado a su tiempo, usualmente toma varios años, antes que llegue a los concesionarios y es un proceso tan exigente, que algunos modelos (grandes ideas sobre el papel), son descartados antes de la creación del primer prototipo. 

Digamos que en 1962, alguien llamado David North, un estilista en Oldsmobile, creó una ilustración denominada el "Auto Flama Roja" y era básicamente un carro deportivo compacto; también es menester saber que éste no estaba destinado a ser un coche real, al menos no para su creador. 

Pero algunas semanas después, a un proyecto de vehículo personal de lujo en la división Oldsmobile se le dió luz verde y el diseño de North fue escogido. 

La plataforma para el futuro modelo era la misma del Buick Riviera y ésta era substancialmente más grande que la plataforma prevista por David North así que, el modelo tuvo que sufrir "algunos" ajustes. 

La creación del Coupé Deportivo de Lujo Oldsmobile Toronado de 1966 tomó siete años (la innovación toma tiempo, ya lo saben), pero el resultado fue un vehículo con diseño de avanzada que luce futurista hasta el día de hoy, elegante, nítido, diferente a cualquier cosa de esa época y ganó el premio "Coche del Año" de Motor Trend en 1966. 

Otras innovaciones llegaron a ser realidad gracias al Toronado como: la transmisión de trabajo pesado Turbo-Hydramatic 400 de 3 velocidades, el carburador Rochester Quadrajet de 4 barriles, la pestaña de junta con silueta esférica para múltiple de escape y el sistema de ventilación "Draft-Free" (libre de corrientes de aire). 

El hecho de que el Toronado fuera un enorme auto personal de lujo, no fue obstáculo para destacarse como vehículo de alto desempeño también. 

La responsable de eso, fue la planta motriz (la misma que los Muscle Cars harían épica, un tiempo después), un alucinante motor de 425 pulgadas cúbicas, 7.0 L, Rocket V8, clasificado en 385 hp (con la opción de un motor de 455 pulgadas cúbicas, 7.5 L, Rocket V8) y a pesar de la transmisión automática podía ir de 0-60 mph en 7,5 segundos y el tiempo para cuarto de milla era 15,7 segundos... 

¡Bastante impresionante para un modelo de 2,5 toneladas!...

Los considero réplicas a escala en diecast tipo Premium y me interesa muy poco lo que algunos "expertos" piensen... 

¡Sólo miren las fotografías de arriba y díganme que estoy equivocado! =PPPPP... 

Este es un producto reciente, cuando RC2 Brands Inc. era todavía el dueño de JL y la calidad está fuera de toda duda. 

No es de las líneas Regulares de Johnny Lightning (y las primeras, de todos modos, están por encima de cualquier otra en asuntos de calidad), sino de una línea para coleccionistas llamada Poker Series que viene en una tarjeta linda, grande, gruesa y a todo color. 

Hay 12 modelos en cada Serie, todos ellos presentan un trabajo de pintura / tampos exclusivos y el tema de la decoración es precisamente las figuras del Póker. 

Esta es una réplica de alta gama con carrocería y chasis en diecast, apertura de capó con motor detallado, llantas de caucho con diseño de rimes a juego con los del auto original e impresas con una graciosa línea blanca, los interiores en color plateado están sorprendentemente detallados, como puedes esperar y los asientos recibieron una acabado aterciopelado extra en verde. 

¡La Serie Poker tiene otra particularidad: dos cartas y una ficha de póker auténticas como complementos!...

Despite Oldsmobile was the oldest brand of car manufacturers in America and one of the oldest in the whole world, it designed and created some of the most visionary vehicles ever known. 

It’s curious how we are used to relate the revolutionary ideas with the younger minds when, in fact, only the experience and knowledge that come with the years, give you the elements of judgment to develop innovative solutions... 

Innovation is not a matter of the casual occurrence of a rookie new comer, neither the result of a trivial five minutes conversation, at least not in the real life. 

The development of a vehicle ahead of its time, usually takes several years before it arrives to the dealers and is a process so demanding, that some models (great ideas on paper), are discarded before the creation of the first prototype. 

Let’s say that in 1962, someone called David North, a stylist in Oldsmobile, created an illustration dubbed the "Flame Red Car" and it was basically a compact sport car, also we need to know that it was never meant to be a real car, at least not for its creator. 

But some weeks later, to a project of a personal luxury car in the Oldsmobile division, it was given the green light and the North’s design was chosen. 

The platform for the future model was the same of the Buick Riviera and it was substantially bigger than the platform envisioned by David North so, the model had to undergo "some" adjustments. 

The creation of the 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado Luxury Sport Coupe took seven years (innovation takes time, you already know), but the result was a vehicle with an avant garde design that looks futuristic until today, sleek, sharp, different to anything at that age and it won the Motor Trend’s "Car of the Year" prize in 1966. 

Other innovations came about because of the Toronado like: the heavy-duty Turbo-Hydramatic 400 3-speed transmission, the Rochester Quadrajet 4-barrel carburetor, the spherical shaped exhaust-manifold flange gaskets and the "Draft-Free" ventilation system. 

The fact that the Toronado was a huge personal luxury car, was no obstacle to stand out as a high performance vehicle as well. 

The responsible for that, was the powerplant (the same that the Muscle Cars would make epic, a while later), a hallucinatory 425 cu in, 7.0 L, Rocket V8 engine, rated at 385 hp (with the option of a 455 cu in, 7.5 L, Rocket V8 engine) and despite the automatic transmission it could go from 0-60 mph in 7.5 seconds and the quarter mile time was 15.7 seconds... 

Quite impressive for a model of 2.5 tons!... 

The incredible models by Johnny Lightning came back!... 

I consider them Premium scale replicas in diecast and I care very little about what some "experts" think about it... Just look at the pictures above and tell me that I’m wrong! =PPPPP... 

This is a recent product, when RC2 Brands Inc. was still the owner of JL and the quality is beyond doubt. 

This is not from the regular lines by Johnny Lightning (and the first are above any other in quality matters anyway), but from a collector’s line called Poker Series, that come in a nice, big, thick and full color card. 

There are 12 models in each Series, all of them feature exclusive paint job / tampos and the theme of the decoration is precisely the Poker figures. 

This is a high end replica with body and chassis in diecast, opening hood with detailed engine, rubber tires with rims design matching the original one and printed with a graceful white line, the interiors in silver color are surprisingly detailed, as expected and the seats received an extra velvety finishing in green. 

The Poker Series has also another particularity: two authentic poker cards and a poker chip as complements!...
