ENGLISH When people think in luxury cars, probably one of the first brands which come to their mind (if not the first one) is Mercedes-Benz and is not something that should surprise us... This multinational division of Daimler AG, has been in the market since 1926 (when the first Mercedes-Benz branded car was produced) and its portfolio has included mainly luxury vehicles (unlike Volkswagen, which is by definition a "vehicle for the people").
I think that the managers and founders of this brand, had quite clear in their minds that they would create cars out of the ordinary...
Even their slogan is very revealing: "Das Beste oder nichts" ("The best or nothing") and it seems to be the "anthem" for all the industry from Germany.
Neither is a surprise that Mercedes-Benz has introduced many technological and safety innovations, because the innovation requires juicy investments and a luxury brand with healthy finances, is better prepared to take the role of a leader of the automotive industry...
What is really surprising is that such brand decides to create an affordable car, something like an "entry level" vehicle for the "masses".
Well, the idea of affordability for a luxury brand, is a "tad" different to the average idea of an economic car and in my country (Colombia), where virtually the entire portfolio of Mercedes-Benz is offered (including the SLS AMG, but excluding the Maybach models), the price for a 2013 - 2014 Mercedes-Benz A-Class starts in about US$36,000, which is not precisely cheap, if you know what I mean.
But you pay what you get and being an entry level vehicle (or aspirational), the A-Klasse is a Mercedes-Benz in all the sense of the word.
The release of this model was in the 1997 Frankfurt Motor Show and was not exempt from issues; after all, it was the first one of its class and during a test performed by the Swedish automobile publication Teknikens Värld, it just flipped over.
Initially, Mercedes-Benz was reluctant to accept its responsibility, because its reputation was at stake, but obviously, for this very reason they decided to recover all units sold and fix the problem.
The suspension was modified and an electronic stability control was added, which required an investment of DM$300 million.
The whole bodywork received a new design, more fluid, angulate, modern and integrated, the work on the front and rear is specially remarkable and preserves better the unity of design with models from other lines, than the previous generation.
The safety was fairly improved with a large number of airbags (some of them adaptative, which work depending on the severity of the accident), also the adaptative seat belts, a selective damping system and there was available 15% additional cargo capacity.
It had a wide variety of powertrains, from a 1.5 L, Inline 4, Petrol engine (rated at 116 hp) to a 2.0 L, Inline 4, Petrol engine (rated at 193 hp), also from a 2.0 L, Inline 4, Diesel engine (rated at 82 hp) to a 2.0 L, Inline 4, Diesel engine (rated at 140 hp).
Let’s give a warm welcome to another 1:43 scale model, made by a prestigious german brand of diecast: Schuco (which now is property of the same owner of Majorette: Simba-Dickie Group).
It was founded in 1921 by Heinrich Schreyer and began manufacturing mechanical tin toys.
The company nowadays is focused on the collectors segment, offering high end diecast replicas of vehicles in scales from 1:87 to 1:10.
This model belongs to a Limited Edition and although there is no info in the packaging, probably the total production was only 1,000 units worldwide (the standard for this exclusive lines by Schuco).
The level of detail and finishes, inside and outside, are top notch, as you can expect from an expensive diecast like this.
There are not gimmicks like openable hood / doors (which is pretty normal for the scale 1:43), but the quality in the product compensates it very well.
It has diecast body with plastic chassis (some details are nicely painted in silver), excellent paint/tampos/photoetching jobs, plastic inserts for the head/rear lights, independent wipers, door handles, rearview mirrors, disk brakes and calipers, as well as independent rear antenna.
It includes an acrylic display urn and the base in black has printed the name of the model...
If they weren’t so expensive and hard to get, I would think into purchase some more...
Hos 6:1-3,6 "Come, and let us return unto the LORD: for HE hath torn, and HE will heal us; HE hath smitten, and HE will bind us up. After two days will HE revive us: in the third day HE will raise us up, and we shall live in HIS sight. Then shall we know, if we follow on to know the LORD: His going forth is prepared as the morning; and HE shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth... For I desired mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of GOD more than burnt offerings."
Back then when I was on patrol, I see these Class A like secondary cars at luxury mansion used by mistress for marketing. I have also seen is at roadshow and to my surprise, the interior is pretty spacious. This toy of Class A is well made with the antenna on roof even included. Very presentable on the stand too..
these minivans are considered here as luxury vehicles too, mainly by the brand and price tag... the latest models are even bigger, wider, lower and a bit more powerful with a more sporty look... i would say that is the best model in 1:43 scale, i have found for my collection, so far !!!... HEHE, the antenna is quite delicate an easy to ruin, but is very well protected by the display case... =)

My alternate blog in WordPress
From now, I will be publishing basically the same contents in both blogs, but for reviews before March 18, 2019, you must read my Blogger blog...
I’m a professional graphic designer and a restful collector, but above all: I’m someone who doesn’t take for granted anything, just because someone else says so. I think this hobby goes way beyond buying stuff here and there: anybody with money can buy collectibles, but not anybody becomes collector by doing so. I think as well that this hobby is, more than anything, about knowledge, about making sense of what happens around us and just like any other kind of knowledge, if it’s devoid of ethics, is worthless. I like to address topics around collectionism, including, but not limited to: history, industry, forums, groups, collectors, distributors, sellers, etc. I’m fully aware that criticism is essential for our hobby: everything is susceptible of improvement and we the collectors demand quality, but the industry around it doesn’t necessarily shares that vision. After all, well-targeted criticism always helps to detect failures and correct them, it’s like critical thinking: it helps you see things as they really are and not just as how they are presented to you. If you are someone who likes to look beyond the surface, welcome, if that is not the case, continue at your own risk...
