ENGLISH You know, perhaps, just perhaps, you have heard about a popular saying in several latin american countries or any of its variations, that says: "the luck of the ugly, the handsome desires it" (in english sounds even weirder, you don’t have to point it out =PPPPP) and I can imagine the puzzled face that you have at this very moment... Well, this adage has to do very often with the "luck" of the ugly people in love matters (where "luck" is understood as an ostensibly inexplicable appealing, awakened in the opposite sex... One of the many perplexities of the spanish language, of course)...
You might ask: "how could it even make any sense?" and I will reply you: just look at some couples, even famous, in which one of the individuals is stunning and the other, well, just mr. or mrs. ugly duckling...
Then, people witnessing such "absurdity", only manage to cry out, shocked: "but, what he / she has, that I may not have?" and yeah, you got it, it’s about mr. or mrs. "handsome" rotted of envy, thinking out loud.
But, on the other hand, is more than likely that you are wondering right now, what all this prattle has to do with the present publication, because the owner of this blog cares very little about the vanity fair?...
Don’t worry, most times I find myself in a crossroads, trying to understand my ramblings and I just give up, letting to my mind to do its classic antics; until reality knocks the door and I return to my kinda boring clear-headedness...
Yet, "the luck of the ugly, the handsome desires it" describes, somehow, what happens with the car I’m publishing today, a "sleeper" in terms of the Hot Rod enthusiasts.
This is a compact vehicle for the standards in United States, but it would be considered a medium size car in the rest of the world and, as most compact models, it carries the stigma of the outcasts.
The first Chevy II (the most basic Nova, actually), was not precisely a comprehensive project of design; it was rather a hasty answer to the unexpectedly successful Ford Falcon, which in turn, would be the platform for the future Mustang.
Nobody would dare to qualify it as a "glamorous style leader" and that was not its calling, but as I mentioned previously, it’s justly considered a sleeper, which means that behind that scruffy and boxy exterior (ugly =( ), occasionally you could find a luxuriant engine, which gives it a shine and charm, that other handsome Muscle Cars, would like to own (lucky =) )...
Precisely, one of these ungainly cars, property of Katy Eyer, a makeup artist, was the "canvas" where the famous automotive designer and customizer Chip Foose, captured a singular masterpiece, that transformed the anemic Katy’s ride into a delicious "Cherry Nova"...
The old fairy tale of the ugly duckling, began with a barely decent means of transportation that managed to rile its frustrated owner, in the episode 2 of the second season of Overhaulin’ (the TV Show where Foose is the host and captain)...
It’s always fascinating to see how some people love their cars, even if these are despised by the people around them or by the "connoisseurs", who usually consider these vehicles just as old clunkers, "meat" for junkyards...
After an extensive reconstruction and customization, because the car was falling apart and Foose (a professional trained with masters of the old school, who knows how to embellish a car) takes his job seriously; the outcome is a stunning swan, which also reminds me of another popular saying, here in Colombia, that says: "there is no ugly woman, but man without money", go figure!...
It’s been a while since my last review including a model by M2 Machines, partly because I have been exploring more brands in the diecast universe; however, it doesn’t mean that I have forgotten the pleasure I had the first time I got one of them, as a gift from an appreciated friend and fellow collector.
Unlike most of the items in my collection, I got this great diecast through a local collectibles store; every now and then, I like to pay a visit to places like those, in order to know how is operating the market of toys in my hometown and that’s how I know that we are getting better in that sense.
This model belongs to the Foose Design Series, Release 1, which has the same presentation of other lines by M2 Machines, namely, a thick clamshell; but the internal card, has a distinctive design, featuring a clean Foose logo in front and tiny original sketches behind.
The model itself is a faithful scale reproduction of the actual "Cherry Nova", designed and built during the TV Show; it has diecast body and chassis.
The paint job accurately reproduces the actual two tone scheme of the car: pearled white on the top and silver in the lower part, with a nice curved stripe in red, separating the two color zones and a tiny pair of cherries on both sides, just before the rear end and below the windows moldings; it received more tampos or touches of paint for the front grille, front bumper, signal lights, windows moldings, tail lights, a tiny badge in the tail and the rear plate, in black, orange, red, silver and white.
It features openable hood with detailed and painted engine, in black and orange; also, it has plastic inserts for the front grille and bumper, head lights, rear bumper and tail lights.
The interiors are white, fairly detailed, with touches of silver paint on the seats and dark red on the dashboard; the wheels are multipart, with realistic chrome rims and low profile styled rubber tires; it has the signature display base of M2M and it was made in China...
2 Kin 13:1-4 "In the three and twentieth year of Joash the son of Ahaziah king of Judah Jehoahaz the son of Jehu began to reign over Israel in Samaria, and reigned seventeen years. And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, and followed the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which made Israel to sin; he departed not therefrom. And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and HE delivered them into the hand of Hazael king of Syria, and into the hand of Ben-hadad the son of Hazael, all their days. And Jehoahaz besought the LORD, and the LORD hearkened unto him: for HE saw the oppression of Israel, because the king of Syria oppressed them."... =)
It has a nice name just the design looks a lot more macho than cherry : ) The design is pretty straightforward or should I say simple and it appeared more plain with only a coat of silver paint throughout. Not forgetting a red line. Still the diecast is neat with a nice touch of vintage classic ^_^
well, the car is still a boxy/manly Nova, no doubt, but the hot red against the cool white/silver doesn’t fail to give that feminine feeling and certainly she fell in love again with this partner of the road (of course, if she wants to give up on it, i would receive it gladly !!!)... this kind of customizations are also known as Resto-Mods and these are much appreciated by the fanatics of Hot Rods !!!... =D
"the luck of the ugly, the handsome desires it" - in my mind I can imagine that a young but poor handsome man is looking at an ugly but rich old man having fun with pretty young girls and the poor young man can only say: "sigh...."
well, yep, i know exactly what you mean and yep, money usually works like "pheromones" for girls who want a life of luxury and comfort without much effort, is like the perfect embellisher, you know !!!... nonetheless, not always is a matter of money, because handsome people most times are vane, selfish, arrogant and, in few words, beautiful bastards; while ugly people are less self centered and have more to offer than just a nice face or body...
about the diecast model, i surely agree with you, the car looks great, manly but feminine at the same time, without being androgynous; it has character and charm, also M2Machines works hard to please collectors like us !!!... =)

I’m a professional graphic designer and a restful collector, but above all: I’m someone who doesn’t take for granted anything, just because someone else says so. I think this hobby goes way beyond buying stuff here and there: anybody with money can buy collectibles, but not anybody becomes collector by doing so. I think as well that this hobby is, more than anything, about knowledge, about making sense of what happens around us and just like any other kind of knowledge, if it’s devoid of ethics, is worthless. I like to address topics around collectionism, including, but not limited to: history, industry, forums, groups, collectors, distributors, sellers, etc. I’m fully aware that criticism is essential for our hobby: everything is susceptible of improvement and we the collectors demand quality, but the industry around it doesn’t necessarily shares that vision. After all, well-targeted criticism always helps to detect failures and correct them, it’s like critical thinking: it helps you see things as they really are and not just as how they are presented to you. If you are someone who likes to look beyond the surface, welcome, if that is not the case, continue at your own risk...
