¿Cuando fue la última vez que viste un soldado quejándose por la falta de vaporosidad y ajuste perfecto en sus prendas, o sobre la carencia de un elaborado diseño de talla en madera para la culata de su rifle semi-automático, EH?... 

Últimamente, algunas cosas han estado cambiando en la vida militar, no necesariamente para bien, pero creo que estamos todavía lejos de ver al ejército como una versión retorcida de la pasarela de Victoria Secret o como un taller de ebanistería medievalesco... 

Hay una buena razón de por qué la vida civil y la vida militar son sustancialmente diferentes: la guerra y la protección de cualquier clase de libertad, nunca han sido un asunto de sutilezas, diplomacia o extensas discusiones filosóficas. 

La vida militar es sobre acción, seguir reglas estrictas, austeridad, sacrificio, lealtad y resistencia a toda prueba, no hay lugar para las veleidades que podrías permitirte en tu vida como ciudadano y así es como debe ser, porque no necesitamos un ejército gestionado como el negocio del espectáculo o como una casita de muñecas. 

Todos los elementos involucrados en los cuerpos armados del estado siguen la lógica anterior; simplicidad, versatilidad y practicidad, nunca fueron tan apreciadas y necesarias como en la vida militar, y definitivamente los vehículos que ellos usan son pruebas contundentes de esta declaración. 

Todos los automóviles creados para la producción en masa, deben cumplir con una cada vez más larga lista de requerimientos en términos de rendimiento, seguridad, confiabilidad, tamaño, durabilidad, consumo de combustible y comodidad, entre otras cosas; pero dicha lista, cuando se trata de transportes militares, es mucho más larga y exigente. 

Por eso es que este tipo de vehículos es como como ningún otro, por eso es que lucen más duros, más amenazantes e incluso más pendencieros que sus contrapartes de civil; por supuesto, cuando ese es el caso, porque muchos vehículos en este segmento son creados desde cero, con especificaciones clasificadas, por razones obvias. 

Con todo, muy pocos de estos transportes especializados han hecho camino a la vida civil, no sin cambiar los preconcepciones de la gente normal, sobre lo que deberías esperar de un automóvil y, paradójicamente, dándole a estos vehículos espartanos un extraño halo de "esnobismo", que nunca tendrían de otra manera. 

El M998 HMMWV o coloquialmente llamado Humvee, es uno de esos ejemplos excepcionales y uno que tocó una fibra sensible del público general, después de su brillante desempeño en un hito de la guerra moderna: la Guerra del Golfo. 

No sé quién estuvo detrás de la idea de poner este vehículo descomunal en el mercado automotriz regular, pero estoy bastante seguro que fue alguien con agallas, alguien lo suficientemente audaz para creer en el potencial de un veterano de guerra moderno, en las salas de exhibición de los concesionarios. 

Este auto, a pesar de las reservas que muy posiblemente muchos gerentes de ventas debieron tener sobre él, llegó a ser una leyenda instantánea, plenamente reconocida alrededor del mundo y se convirtió incluso en una opción preferida por algunos Equipos de Carreras Off-Road, especialmente en Europa, ¡donde tiene un "ejército" de fanáticos!... 

Habrá más información y especificaciones sobre el Hummer en publicaciones futuras; este ícono automotriz, siendo además un vehículo con credenciales militares, tiene una clasificación muy alta en mis preferencias así que, ¡sigue conectado, por sí acaso =PPPPP!... 

He estado al tanto del renacimiento de Johnny Lightning, simplemente porque el retorno de esta marca de diecast es una de las mejores noticias que he escuchado en años y mucho más, considerando que últimamente he visto con mayor claridad el lado oscuro de esta afición. 

Debo aclarar que este lado oscuro, nada tiene que ver con las personas que tienen un sentido de decencia y dignidad en el ejercicio del coleccionismo; más bien, es el negocio grotesco de individuos que no se avergüenzan de la vulgaridad de su propia codicia. 

El fenómeno que representa este renacimiento, tiene muchos más matices e implicaciones de las que la gente normal y aún los coleccionistas no tan experimentados creen luego, abordaré el asunto en varias reseñas, cada vez que un diecast de JL sea introducido en mi blog. 

Por ahora, podría decir que el futuro cercano de esta marca luce muy prometedor; también, que el reciente intento fallido por Takara Tomy de tomar las riendas de Johnny Lightning, podría ser una buena lección para el nuevo licenciatario, de lo que NO HACER con un activo tan valioso y una gran oportunidad para hacer las cosas bien. 

En efecto, el retiro temporal de esta marca, la puso en la palestra y ahora más coleccionistas nuevos están conscientes de la existencia de un fabricante de diecast tan grandioso como Johnny Lightning; esto puede ser usado como un medio para catapultarla a su legítimo lugar... 

El espléndido modelo introducido en esta publicación, una Pickup Techo Duro 2 Puertas AM General Hummer H1 (M998 Humvee) Versión Civil de 1997, es parte de la era RC2 Brands Inc., algunos años antes de su adquisición por Takara Tomy y una muestra apropiada del potencial de JL en el mercado de los coleccionistas serios; lo conseguí con la ayuda de un respetado amigo, colega coleccionista en importador de juguetes, hace más de 4 años. 

Pertenece a la Serie Hummer Like Nothing Else, consistente en 4 modelos; el diecast venía dentro de un clamshell, agradablemente diseñado y permite una vista de casi 360° de esta réplica, con una tarjeta interna, impresa a todo color. 

Tiene carrocería y chasis en diecast, aunque la cabina exterior, el techo, las barras antivuelco, el protector de bómper frontal y un dispositivo en el platón de la pickup, que parece un sistema adicional de refrigeración para el motor, son insertos plásticos separados; las fotografías son elocuentes respecto al nivel de detalle alcanzado aquí. 

El trabajo de pintura no es exactamente como el de la camioneta real, pero luce mucho mejor en mi opinión, ya que reemplaza el color principal grisáceo plano por un cobrizo metalizado más rico, con acabado satinado y es complementado por maravillosos tampos y/o calcomanías por todos lados, sello de calidad de JL. 

Los interiores en negro, son algo simples pero no decepcionan en absoluto, las ruedas son multiparte, con rimes realistas en cobrizo, replicando el esquema de color de la carrocería y llantas labradas en caucho; no hay apertura de capó, pero el modelo incluye una tarjeta de colección, impresa a todo color, con la fotografía del vehículo real al frente y una breve introducción al Hummer H1 de 1997 en la parte trasera; fue hecho en China como siempre...

When was the last time you saw a soldier complaining about the lack of airiness and snug fit of his garments, or about the lack of an elaborate woodcarving design for the buttstock of his semi-automatic rifle, HUH?... 

Lately, some things have been changing in the military life, not necessarily for the better, but I think we are still far from see the army as a twisted version of the Victoria Secret's fashion catwalk or as a medieval-esque cabinetmakers workshop... 

There is a good reason why civil life and military life are substantially different: war and protection of any kind of freedom, never have been a matter of quibbling, diplomacy or extensive philosophical discussions. 

Military life is about action, following strict rules, austerity, sacrifice, loyalty and foolproof strength, there is no place for the velleities that you could allow yourself in your life as civilian and that’s the way it must be, because we don’t need an army managed like the show business or like a dollhouse. 

All the elements involved in the state armed corps follow the above logic; simplicity, versatility and practicality, never were as appreciated and necessary as in the military life, and definitely the vehicles they use are hard evidence of this statement. 

All the automobiles created for the mass production, must comply with an increasingly long list of requirements in terms of performance, safety, reliability, size, durability, fuel consumption and comfort, among other things; but such list, when it comes to military transports, is far longer and demanding. 

That’s why this kind of vehicles are like nothing else, that’s why they look tougher, more menacing and even more quarrelsome than their in civvies counterparts; of course, when that’s the case, because many vehicles in this segment are created from the scratch, with classified specs, for obvious reasons. 

Yet, very few of these specialized transports have made way into civilian life, not without changing the preconceptions of ordinary people, about what you should expect from an automobile and, paradoxically, giving these spartan vehicles a strange halo of "snobbery", they would never have otherwise. 

The M998 HMMWV or colloquially named Humvee, is one of those exceptional examples and one that struck a chord of general public, after its brilliant performance in a milestone of the modern warfare: the Gulf War. 

I don’t know who was behind the idea of putting this thumping vehicle in the regular automotive market, but I’m pretty sure it was someone with guts, someone daring enough to believe in the potential of a modern war veteran, in the showrooms of the dealerships. 

This car, despite the reservations that very possibly many sales managers should have about it, became an instant legend, fully recognized around the world and it became even a favorite option for some Off-Road Racing Teams, specially in Europe, where it has an "army" of fans!... 

There will be more information and specifications about the Hummer in future publications; this automotive icon, being also a vehicle with military credentials, has a very high raking in my preferences so, stay tuned, just in case =PPPPP!... 

I have been aware of the revival of Johnny Lightning, just because the return of this diecast brand is one of the best news I have heard in years and much more, considering that lately I have seen with greater clarity the dark side of this hobby. 

I must clarify that this dark side, has nothing to do with the people who have a sense of decency and dignity in the exercise of collectionism; rather, it’s the grotesque business of individuals who are not ashamed of the vulgarity of their own greed. 

The phenomenon that represents this revival, has much more nuances and implications than what ordinary people or even not so experienced collectors think so, I will address the issue in several reviews, every time a JL diecast is introduced in my blog. 

By now, I could say that the near future of this brand looks very promising; also, that the recent failed attempt by Takara Tomy of taking the reins of Johnny Lightning, could be a good lesson for the new licensee, of what NOT TO DO with such a valuable asset and a great chance to do things right. 

Indeed, the temporary retirement of this brand, puts it in the spotlight and now more new collectors are aware of the existence of such a great diecast maker as Johnny Lightning; this can be used as a means to catapult it to its rightful place. 

The splendid model introduced in this publication, a 1997 AM General Hummer H1 2-Door Hardtop Pickup (M998 Humvee) Civilian Version, is part of the RC2 Brands Inc. era, some years before its acquisition by Takara Tomy and a suitable sample of the potential of JL in the serious collectors market; I got it with the help of a respected friend, fellow collector and toys importer, more than 4 years ago. 

It belongs to the Hummer Like Nothing Else Series, consisting of 4 models; the diecast came inside a clamshell, nicely designed and allows a view of almost 360° of this replica, with an internal card, printed in full color. 

It has diecast body and chassis, albeit the exterior cabin, the top, the rollbars, the front bumper guard and a device on the bed of the truck, that seems an additional refrigeration system for the engine, are separate plastic inserts; the pictures are eloquent regarding the level of detail achieved here. 

The paint job is not exactly like the one of the actual truck, but it looks much better in my opinion, since it replaces the plain grayish main color for a richer copper metallized, with satin finishing and it’s complemented by marvelous tampos and/or decals everywhere, hallmark of JL. 

The interiors in black, are kinda simple but don’t disappoint at all, the wheels are multipart, with realistic copper rims, replicating the color scheme of the body and styled rubber tires; there is no openable hood but the model includes a trading card, printed in full color, with a picture of the actual vehicle on front and a brief introduction to the 1997 Hummer H1 at the back; it was made in China as always...
