La década de los 90s no es precisamente la más rutilante en términos de estilo automotriz, especialmente cuando la miras retrospectivamente y no puede tener ninguna oportunidad cuando la comparas con décadas anteriores y posteriores... 

Este fue un tiempo de transición a todo un nuevo milenio, los diseñadores de autos tenían la tarea de crear un lenguaje visual para un futuro que estaba a la vuelta de la esquina y aparentemente, la sombra de los 80s era demasiado grande para su gusto... 

En abierta rebelión con el paradigma en vigor, la silueta en forma de caja, que fue considerada el epítome de la alta tecnología, la vanguardia y el buen gusto en la década anterior, fue desdeñada con el fin de favorecer un diseño inspirado en las formas orgánicas de la naturaleza. 

El enfoque definitivamente suena sugestivo, al menos teóricamente, pero si quieres ir contra la corriente, debes tener un gran talento, en vez de solo una gran bocota para despotricar sobre el establecimiento y el talento era escaso, a juzgar por el panorama automotriz de esa era. 

El problema era no solo el diseño exterior de los coches de los 90s, la principal razón de porqué son vívidamente odiados por muchos compradores, también había una pobre ingeniería y acabados de pacotilla para completar el desastre; irónicamente, allí, es donde yace la razón de porqué son "adorados" por los depósitos de chatarra. 

Sé que algunas personas no estarán de acuerdo con mi percepción, atreviéndose a decir que en realidad los 90s fueron una especie de "edad dorada", llena de carros rápidos, confiables y atractivos para conducir, pero verifiquemos algunas "hermosas perlas" del periodo como: Chevrolet Cavalier, Fiat Multipla, Ford Aspire, Buick Skylark, Suzuki X-90, Hyundai Tiburon, Subaru Impreza Casa Blanca, Polonez, Pontiac Grand Am, Geo Metro, Volkswagen Golf MK3, Mercedes Benz Clase A, Kia Pride, Seat Toledo, Alfa Romeo 166 (algunos de ellos disponibles en mi país) y la lista puede continuar implacablemente... 

Sí, vehículos franca e incluso criminalmente insípidos, de cualquier proveniencia que pudieras imaginar... 

Probablemente, debido a esta desbordante mediocridad, los modelos de los 90s que realmente dieron en el blanco son mucho más prominentes, como diamantes en una pila de carbón, aunque esta percepción está cambiando... 

Uno de ellos fue parte de los medios de transporte utilitarios: la Camioneta Pickup de Tamaño Completo Ford F-150 XLT Flareside SuperCab Sport 4x4 (2+1 Puertas) de 1997. 

No es un secreto que Ford ha estado liderando el mercado de las camionetas pickup en los Estados Unidos, prácticamente desde la introducción de la Serie F por allá en 1948; la gente a cargo de esta línea, en la marca del óvalo azul, tenía una idea clara sobre el verdadero llamado de estos vehículos desde el comienzo, ideas claras producen resultados claros, ya ves. 

Pero la competencia es feroz desde entonces, General Motors, Chrysler y otros fabricantes de autos no han estado cruzados de brazos; por ejemplo, en los 90s, la dodge Ram pasó de ser un punto distante en el horizonte, a ser una amenaza seria y Ford tenía que hacer algo al respecto. 

Andrew K. Jacobson, Director de Diseño de Ford Trucks, fue responsable por un rediseño extensivo de este ícono y el resultado fue el modelo que marcó el principio de la décima generación. 

La camioneta luce más como un coche (un enfoque diametralmente opuesto a aquel de la Ram), todas las líneas de la carrocería fueron suavizadas, pero no al límite de crear un volumen fofo y aburrido (tan frecuente en los 90s); el diseño es pulcro y sexi, me recuerda de alguna manera el encanto de la segunda generación de la Serie F y equipada con un motor de 330 pulgadas cúbicas, 5.4 L, Triton V8, orientado a la eficiencia de combustible, produciendo decentes 235 hp, ¡podías tener un caballo de trabajo de buena pinta!... 

Cada vez que tengo la oportunidad de visitar una tienda al por mayor o por departamentos, la sección de juguetes es una parada imperdible; algunas veces mis expectativas son muy altas y el surtido es sencillamente decepcionante, mientras otras mis expectativas son muy bajas y encuentro varios coleccionables agradables, pero de vez en cuando, mis expectativas son cero y encuentro uno o dos artículos excepcionales. 

Ese es el caso con la invitada para la presente publicación, un hallazgo en un supermercado, un lugar donde no esperas encontrar algo como esto, especialmente cuando la sección de juguetes ocupa la décima parte del pasillo equivalente en una tienda al por mayor. 

Junto con un grupo de no más de 20 diecast Hot Wheels, cuando el mínimo promedio por tienda está entre 72 y 144 (1 ó 2 cajas), había una cantidad incluso menor de diecast hechos por Welly, una marca que tiene presencia oficial en mi patria de apenas 5 años o algo así y que está debutando además en mi blog. 

Hablaré sobre esta marca en una reseña futura, pero esta vez puedo decir que el modelo en cuestión pertenece a la Serie Cool Collection, la cual reclama manejar escala 1:60 y mientras que podría ser verdad en otros artículos de esta línea, para este artículo particular la escala es 1:73. 

Venía dentro de un clamshell muy básico y pequeño, con una tarjeta delgada, impresa a todo color, presentando un diseño desaliñado que, por otro lado, es coherente con un diecast de bajo presupuesto; bueno, con un precio de un poco más de la mitad de aquel de un Hot Wheels o Matchbox, no puedes ser muy exigente y está bien, ¡porque NO colecciono tarjetas o cajas, sino diecast =PPPPP!... 

El modelo mismo no tiene nada que envidiar a sus pares de Mattel y en efecto, es mejor en muchos sentidos, al menos con respecto a esta grandiosa Ford F-150 XLT Flareside SuperCab de 1997; lo cual pone en entredicho cualquier "argumento" que Mattel pudiera tener para incrementar el precio de sus productos, mientras sus estándares de calidad son cada vez más bajos... 

El nivel de detalle, proporción, acabados y calidad general, ponen este modelo directamente en el segmento de coleccionistas adultos, no tengo duda sobre eso y si Welly mantiene este ritmo, tendremos otra excelente opción para nuestros mini-garajes. 

El modelo tiene carrocería en diecast y chasis en plástico negro, Welly no es mezquina con materiales y esas son buenas noticias; el trabajo de pintura fue hecho en rojo oscuro candy, complementado por tampos precisos para las luces delanteras, la parrilla frontal, el logo oval de Ford al frente, los emblemas F150 y 4x4 Sport en los paneles laterales, así como el logo oval de Ford y la insigna F150 en la cola, con cero desajustes (Mattel podría tomar nota, pero no espero tanto de ellos). 

Las ventanas son transparentes y recibieron un tampo negro al frente, incluso los limpiabrisas fueron agradablemente moldeados; los interiores en blanco son más realistas que en los modelos de las líneas principales del gigante rojo (Mattel); las ruedas son multiparte con diseño de rimes deportivos 5 Spoke en plateado, llantas en caucho labradas y fue hecho en China...

The decade of the 90s is not precisely the most brilliant in terms of automotive styling, specially when you look at it retrospectively and it cannot stand a chance when you compare it with previous and later decades... 

This was a transition time to a whole new millennium, the car designers had the task of creating a visual language for a future that was just around the corner and apparently, the shadow of the 80s was far too big for their taste... 

In open rebellion against the paradigm in force, the boxy shape, which was considered the epitome of high technology, avant-garde and good taste in the previous decade, was disdained in order to favor a design inspired in the organic forms of nature. 

The approach sounds definitely suggestive, at least theoretically, but if you wanna go against the tide, you must have a big talent, instead of just a big mouth to rant about the establishment and talent was scarce, judging by the automotive panorama of that era. 

The problem was not only the exterior design of cars in the 90s, the main reason why they are vividly hated by many buyers, there was also a poor engineering and shoddy finishes to complete the disaster; ironically, there, is where lies the reason why they are "adored" by scrapyards. 

I know some people will disagree with my perception, daring to say that actually the 90s were a sort of "golden age", full of fast, reliable and engaging to drive cars, but lets check some "beautiful pearls" of the period like: Chevrolet Cavalier, Fiat Multipla, Ford Aspire, Buick Skylark, Suzuki X-90, Hyundai Tiburon, Subaru Impreza Casa Blanca, Polonez, Pontiac Grand Am, Geo Metro, Volkswagen Golf MK3, Mercedes Benz A Class, Kia Pride, Seat Toledo, Alfa Romeo 166 (some of them available in my country) and the list can continue relentlessly... 

Yeah, downright and even criminally tasteless vehicles, from any provenance you could imagine... 

Probably, due to this overflowing mediocrity, the models of the 90s that really nailed it are far more prominent, like diamonds on a pile of carbon although this perception is changing. 

One of them was part of the segment of utilitarian means of transportation: the 1997 Ford F-150 XLT Flareside SuperCab Sport 4x4 (2+1 Doors) Full Size Pickup Truck. 

It’s not a secret that Ford has been leading the market of pickup trucks in United States, virtually since the introduction of the F-Series back in 1948; the people in charge of this line, in the brand of the blue oval, had a clear idea of the true call of this vehicles from the beginning, clear ideas produce clear results, you see. 

But competition is fierce ever since, General Motors, Chrysler and other car manufacturers have not been crossed arms; for instance, in the 90s, the Dodge Ram went from being a distant point on the horizon, to a serious threat and Ford had to do something about it. 

Andrew K. Jacobson, Design Director of Ford Trucks, was responsible for an extensive redesign of this icon and the result was the model that marked the start of the tenth generation. 

The truck looks more like a car (an approach diametrically opposed to that of the Ram), all the lines of the body were smoothed, but not to the limit of creating a flabby and boring volume (so prevalente in the 90s); the design is neat and sexy, it reminds me somehow the charm of the second generation F-Series and equipped with a 330 cu in, 5.4 L, Triton V8 engine, oriented to fuel efficiency, producing decent 235 hp, you could have a good looking workhorse!... 

Every time I have the chance to visit a wholesale or department store, the toys section is an unmissable stop; sometimes my expectations are very high and the assortment is plainly disappointing, while others my expectations are very low and I find several nice collectibles, but once in a while, my expectations are zero and I find one or two exceptional items. 

That’s the case with the guest for the present publication, a finding in a supermarket, a place where you don’t expect to get something like this, specially when the toys section occupies the tenth of the equivalent aisle in a wholesale store. 

Along with a group of no more than 20 Hot Wheels diecast, when the minimum average per store is between 72 and 144 (1 or 2 boxes), there was an amount even lower of diecast made by Welly, a brand that has official presence in my homeland of barely 5 years or so and it’s also debuting in my blog. 

I will talk about this brand in a future review, but this time I can say that the model in question belongs to the Cool Collection Series, which claims to manage 1:60 scale and while it could be true in other items of this line, for this particular item the scale is 1:73. 

It came inside a very basic and small clamshell, with a thin card, printed in full color, featuring a dowdy design that, on the other hand, is coherent with a low budget diecast; well, with a price of a little over half of that of a Hot Wheels or a Matchbox, you can’t be too demanding and it’s fine, because I DON’T collect cards or boxes, but diecast =PPPPP!... 

The model itself has nothing to envy to their Mattel peers and indeed, it’s better in many senses, at least regarding this great 1997 Ford F-150 XLT Flareside SuperCab; which calls into question any "argument" that Mattel could have to increase the prices of its products, while its quality standards are increasingly lower... 

The level of detail, proportion, finishes and overall quality, put this model directly in the adult collectors segment, I have no doubt about that and if Welly keeps this pace, we will have another great option for our mini-garages. 

The model has diecast body and black plastic chassis, Welly is not hard-fisted with materials and those are good news; the paint job was made in dark red candy, complemented by accurate tampos for the head lights, front grille, Ford oval logo in front, the F150 and 4x4 Sport emblems on the side panels, as well as the Ford oval logo and F150 insignia on the tail, with zero mismatches (Mattel could take note, but I don’t expect that much from them). 

The windows are clear and received a black tampo in front, even the wipers were nicely molded; the interiors in white are more realistic than in the models from the mainlines of the red giant (Mattel); the wheels are multipart with sporty 5 Spoke rims design in silver, styled rubber tires and it was made in China...
