ENGLISH There must be something special in the rural life, in the scorching weather of the southern state of Texas, more precisely in Leesburg, a teeny little town east of Dallas, because it was the land that saw Carroll Hall Shelby born...
You know, sometimes there is the belief that success in anything depends heavily on being owner or inheritor of an immense wealth, your lineage or being graduated of the best educational institutions and things like that, in summary: "being born with star"...
Well, Carroll’s life doesn’t seem to fit these descriptions, definitely not considering that he was the son of a mailman (Warren Hall Shelby) and a housewife (Eloise Lawrence Shelby), but GOD knows there are people born to be great in this life and success has more to do with character, than with resources.
Probably his first years were not full of comforts, as it happens in the bosom of any humble family and he was born with a heart valve leakage problem, but his parents and/or the circumstances showed him that hard work and tenacity would make his dreams come true.
As an adult, years after his heart condition improved, he tried to make a living in different activities: running a dump truck business, roughnecking, later starting a poultry ranch, but none of that worked and he still had to provide for his wife and three young children.
In view of this complicated situation, Carroll Shelby made a decision: he would follow his dreams, involving two of his passions in life: cars and speed so, in 1952, he started as racing pilot.
Despite being and incredibly talented and brave racer, one who was known for beating contenders with substantially more powerful vehicles, one who was able to win a race with a broken arm taped to the steering wheel or being the second american pilot to ever win the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Carroll had to resign his career due to the return, with greater severity, of his cardiac problem.
But his legend didn’t end there, in fact, it would be even greater in the second stage of his dream: not anymore as a race pilot, but as a developer of high-performance cars and probably inspired by a Cad-Allard (one of the race cars Shelby drove, which combined a small size, light weight british vehicle ,with an american V8 engine made by Cadillac), he created his most famed car: the Cobra.
In a turn of events that you hardly see in the automotive industry, Carroll Shelby set out to capitalize in his favor the end of manufacturing of the AC Ace, due to the decline in production of Bristol six cylinder engines: he convinced some people in Ford Motor Company to provide V8 engines and the Cobra came to life.
It’s not exaggerated at all to claim that the Cobra is probably the most important sports car ever developed in the United States, the car that single-handedly put the american car industry in the arena of the global motorsports, when the big three (Ford, General Motors and Chrysler) failed to dethrone the hegemony of european brands in the most reputed competitions: the contribution of the Cobra is that great, thanks to the boldness of Shelby!...
As I mentioned in a previous review including models offered by this brand of diecast models, Shelby Collectibles (SC) went out of business virtually since 2013, I mean, it’s like that or suddenly it decided to stop manufacturing its products, without caring too much about its finances and surviving through the "excessive generosity of humankind", which honestly, I don’t think is the case here...
By the way, I made my homework, looking for information about SC and I found that there is still a website of this brand working and even it claims, in the "COMPANY" link that: "...We will continue to release new models and are developing a toy line for 2018 release", but guess what: not a single update has been made since late 2012...
I wish it were otherwise, but I have not heard until now that a company (regardless the productive segment) can survive more than 5 years without producing anything and it’s a real pity; the very same Carroll Shelby established the brand in 2004, with the following premise: "to make collectible quality die cast vehicles at affordable pricing" and you know what, that was exactly what he achieved with this diecast brand, that later was licensed to another manufacturer, independent of Shelby companies.
Which was the manufacturer involved in this negotiation?...
I don’t know for sure, but I have seen recently at least a pair of models retooled by Greenlight for its Hollywood Series: one as part of Gas Monkey franchise and the other for the 60 Seconds franchise; however, the Shelby Collectibles catalog is wider than that so, I wouldn’t dare to assure that GL is the licensee already mentioned.
By 2012 I knew about this brand and that very year I managed the get a few of its models with the help of a friend of mine, fellow collector and importer (I mean, in the secondary market) and it was a case of "love at first sight", pretty much just like it happened with Johnny Lightning, for instance.
Shelby Collectibles, a brand from the Premium segment, whose production was requested probably to Road Signature / Yatming, offers outstanding quality, excellent level of detail and opening features, the latter is probably the most appealing factor for me, for a simple reason: actual cars have opening features normally, even in the case of racing models, so it contributes hugely to realism in any scale model, which you can’t say about sealed body scale replicas.
All the models included in this publication offer full diecast construction, opening hood and doors, several plastic inserts and at least 17 parts excluding wheels, on average, then we are talking doubtless about a diecast for adult and serious collectors.
The first one came inside an individual card, printed in full color; it features a paint job made in bright yellow including a racing stripe in burgundy on front, complemented by a Terlingua Racing Team decoration with tampos and/or decals, on the front fenders and the hood, reproducing an actual vehicle that, as far as I know, belongs to the Segerstrom private collection in U.S.A. (# 67), but there is a more common version of this car in black with the racing stripe on front in yellow; the chassis received silver paint with metal flake finishing.
The interiors were worked in black, but the steering wheel received light brown paint; there are plastic inserts for the front and tail lights, safety roll-over bar, front and rear quick jacking pads, windshield, side exhausts, left rearview mirror and the rear plate; the multipart wheels feature the classic and period correct Halibrand Alloy rims design in chrome, with the center painted in glossy black and styled rubber tires.
The description for the second model is pretty much the same, but the paint job was made in light blue, complemented by a pair of racing stripes in orange and the # 45 on both doors, represents a decoration that strongly reminds something made for Gulf Racing (I’m pretty sure that was the initial intention).
The last one is a replica of the first prototype of the Cobra; this one, as well as the previous, belong to the 2010 Carroll Shelby’s Cars Box Set Series, made in a Limited Edition of 5,000 units; the paint job was made in a royal blue shade that differs from the one of the actual car (the final color it received during its development and promotion), however, for me it looks quite good, it has very few tampos as decoration, just like the original car, which was quite clean, in this case the steering wheel was not painted.
Regarding the plastic inserts, the main difference with the other models is that the tail lights were made with tampos; the multipart wheels have a Wire Spoke rims design similar to the actual ones, but simpler, painted in platinum with satin finishing, the styled rubber tires are white, just because this is a Chase Model and all of them were made in China...
Gen 19:5-13 "And they called unto Lot, and said unto him: where are the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them. And Lot went out at the door unto them, and shut the door after him, and said: I pray you, brethren, do not so wickedly. Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes: only unto these men do nothing; for therefore came they under the shadow of my roof. And they said: stand back. And they said again: this one fellow came in to sojourn, and he will needs be a judge: now will we deal worse with thee, than with them. And they pressed sore upon the man, even Lot, and came near to break the door. But the men put forth their hand, and pulled Lot into the house to them, and shut to the door. And they smote the men that were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great: so that they wearied themselves to find the door. And the men said unto Lot, Hast thou here any besides a son-in-law, and thy sons, and thy daughters? and whatsoever thou hast in the city, bring them out of this place: for we will destroy this place, because the cry of them is waxen great before the face of the LORD; and the LORD hath sent us to destroy it."
Shelby Cobra - one of my favorite and for the first time, I look all 3 that you have though if I have to choose one, I think I don't mind with the second one (the light blue or is it turquoise). Openable door and engine - I really love that!!!
It’s light blue, yep and the color scheme is inspired by one of the options, probably the most used, for Gulf Racing vehicles... These models are gems, Shelby Collectibles made incredibly nice scale version of their own cars and even better, because at least when they were originally released, their prices were rather affordable and the quality superior, great value for the money!... Nowadays and since the diecast brand is out of business, I wouldn’t dare to say that they are cheap, but they are worth it, no doubt, if you happen to find them at reasonable prices!...

I’m a professional graphic designer and a restful collector, but above all: I’m someone who doesn’t take for granted anything, just because someone else says so. I think this hobby goes way beyond buying stuff here and there: anybody with money can buy collectibles, but not anybody becomes collector by doing so. I think as well that this hobby is, more than anything, about knowledge, about making sense of what happens around us and just like any other kind of knowledge, if it’s devoid of ethics, is worthless. I like to address topics around collectionism, including, but not limited to: history, industry, forums, groups, collectors, distributors, sellers, etc. I’m fully aware that criticism is essential for our hobby: everything is susceptible of improvement and we the collectors demand quality, but the industry around it doesn’t necessarily shares that vision. After all, well-targeted criticism always helps to detect failures and correct them, it’s like critical thinking: it helps you see things as they really are and not just as how they are presented to you. If you are someone who likes to look beyond the surface, welcome, if that is not the case, continue at your own risk...
