Reingeniería es un concepto con diferentes implicaciones dependiendo del contexto: por ejemplo, cuando se trata de una fusión de dos o más compañías en una, lo cual requiere un proceso de reingeniería, significa que muchos trabajos están en la cuerda floja, porque, con el fin de "hacer la fusión más eficiente", la compañía resultante "debe ser más pequeña que las que le dieron origen" (!?)... 

Y déjame decirte lo que "eficiencia" significa en la era actual de capitalismo neoliberal desenfrenado que vivimos: un negocio con costos de operación más bajos y mayores ganancias para los accionistas, donde la calidad de productos - servicios y/o el bienestar de las personas que trabajan para estas compañías y/o cuidar el medio ambiente son consideraciones secundarias (en caso que sean consideradas en absoluto, lo cual rara vez ocurre) y el dinero de los "inversionistas" es lo que realmente importa... 

Tan indignante y crudo como suena esa es la realidad, en particular en las compañías más grandes pero irónicamente, reingeniería puede tener una implicación diferente cuando se trata de un producto y/o servicio en sí mismos, porque significa que habrá una revisión minuciosa con el fin de hallar y corregir deficiencias, lo cual resultará en un producto y/o servicio mejorado. 

Este último fue exactamente el caso con la segunda generación (1994-2002) de la línea de pickups desarrollada por Dodge, a la cual pertenece mi invitada para esta publicación: la Camioneta Pickup Dodge RAM 3500 Extended / Club Cab Laramie SLT Dually de Platón Largo Custom de 1995, una Camioneta Pickup de Tamaño Completo de Trabajo Pesado / Camioneta de Trabajo Mediano Clase 3. 

Por la época cuando esta generación fue introducida al mercado, las camionetas pickup de Dodge estaban en un lejano tercer lugar, con apenas 7% de cuota de mercado en los Estados Unidos, Ford y General Motors estaban liderando el segmento, por esa misma razón, los ejecutivos en Chrysler Corporation no eran precisamente entusiastas acerca de la idea de apoyar con talento y recursos este nuevo desarrollo. 

Este proceso empezó en 1986, con el nombre código Phoenix y fue planeado para introducción en 1991, pero la propuesta resultante fue juzgada demasiado convencional, más de lo mismo, lo cual supongo fue una gran decepción para el equipo de desarrollo, pero por otro lado, fue la oportunidad para replantear todo prácticamente desde el principio, una reingeniería, cuyo resultado fue lanzado en 1994 con un éxito sin precedentes... 

Si bien la historia de Funline Merchandise Co., Inc., comenzó por allá en 1993, cuando el mercado de los coleccionables en diecast estaba experimentando la más grande transformación en tiempos recientes, debido al surgimiento del segmento Premium, fue durante la corta pero bastante prolífica era de la marca Muscle Machines (MM), que Funline tuvo su apogeo... 

El éxito de MM no fue el resultado solo de campañas de mercadeo, NO, fue la confluencia de varios factores, incluyendo un producto novedoso con nivel de calidad más alto que el promedio, a comienzos del presente siglo y desde luego, el trabajo de gente talentosa. 

Chris y Ken Leong, con su compañía de diecast Funline, el artista australiano Rohan Day, así como otros artistas en los departamentos de diseño 3D / diseño gráfico, pero también las grandiosas ideas puestas sobre la mesa por Steve Metz, un empresario germano-norteamericano, relacionado de cerca con la cultura Hot Rod. 

Metz quería traer a la vida de una forma tridimensional el trabajo de su amigo Ed "Big Daddy" Roth, replicando los esfuerzos de Revell durante los 60s, en forma de model kits plásticos, pero ahora los quería en forma de diecast y mientras estaba buscando una compañía de diecast para llevar su idea a la realidad, encontró un producto de Funline Merchandise Co., Inc. en una reunión de intercambio de fin de semana y parte de los resultados de este contacto es publicado aquí (otro ejemplo de reingeniería)...

Es momento de enfocarse en mi invitada para esta publicación, un modelo que conseguí en el mercado secundario, en una tienda de coleccionables local, hace más de 5 años y debo confesar que la encontré involuntariamente, porque aunque he estado interesado en encontrar productos por Funline Merchandise Co., Inc., sé que son más difíciles de encontrar con el tiempo y sus precios raramente están en un punto razonable... 

Con todo y con expectativas muy bajas, encontré esta joya, al precio correcto y ahora es parte de mi colección; me encanta este modelo por muchas razones, la construcción completa en diecast es un factor muy importante, sin duda, pero las proporciones, que en este artículo fueron alteradas, son en este caso lo que le añade más encanto, ya que como coleccionista experimentado y diseñador, puedo notar el trabajo equilibrado y cuidadoso así que, lo que podría ser una debilidad, se convirtió en fortaleza aquí. 

Pertenece a la Serie West Coast Choppers / Jesse James de 2004, una línea en la categoría De Lujo / Gama Alta y la presentación era una tarjeta grande y gruesa, con un diseño muy de la vieja escuela, algunos detalles son destacados en alto relieve; justo como con otros productos de esta marca, el nivel de detalle en los moldes es fantástico, incluso mejor que en productos similares en la misma categoría y estamos hablando acerca de un producto con un poquitín más de 15 años en el mercado. 

El trabajo de pintura es prolijo y preciso, fue hecho en blanco plano con acabado brillante (también ofrecida en rojo), complementado por tampos y/o calcomanías extensivas imitando la compleja decoración del vehículo real, aplicada sobre los paneles laterales y el capó, en las llamas tipo pinza de cangrejo puedes ver calaveras diminutas; tampos adicionales fueron incluidos para las luces frontales y de cola, bómperes frontal y trasero, incluso el parabrisas recibió tampos y/o calcomanías, el chasis recibió pintura negra con acabado brillante y el sistema de escape fue pintado en plateado, ¡sorprendente!... 

Hay insertos plásticos para los bómperes frontal y trasero, parrilla frontal, puntas del escape en la parte de atrás y el platón tiene un toldo removible plástico, con más tampos y/o calcomanías; tiene apertura de capó, con motor detallado. 

Los interiores fueron trabajados en gris medio, con un nivel de detalle usualmente reservado para modelos Premium, complementado por ventanas transparentes; la característica de acción "Slam!" también está presente en este modelo, la cual rebaja un poco más el modelo, funcionando más o menos como una suspensión de aire e involucra varios insertos plásticos y partes adicionales. 

Las ruedas multiparte presentan un diseño de rimes maravilloso y realista en cromado, de nuevo, con una calidad esperada para un artículo Premium y llantas labradas en caucho de bajo perfil; si bien las ruedas son bastante diferentes a aquellas incluidas en la camioneta real y esta es una dually (pero las ruedas traseras en esta réplica son individuales), bueno, creo que fue un cambio muy atractivo que añade un toque singular que aprecio; además, una linda tarjeta de colección impresa a todo color con una foto del vehículo real, por ambas caras es un bonus y fue hecha China...

Reengineering is a concept with different implications depending on the context: for instance, when it comes to the merger of two or more companies into one, which requires a process of reengineering, it means that many jobs are on the tighrope, because, in order to "make the merging more efficient", the resulting company "must be smaller than those that gave rise to it" (!?)... 

And let me tell you what "efficiency" means in the current era of rampant neoliberal capitalism we live: a business with lower operating costs and higher earnings for shareholders, where the quality of products - services and/or the welfare of the people who work for these companies and/or caring for the environment are a second consideration (in case they are considered at all, which rarely happens) and the money of "investors" is what really matters... 

As outrageous and crude as it sounds that’s the reality, in particular in the largest companies but ironically, reengineering can have a different implication when it comes to a product and/or service in themselves, because it means that there will be a thorough inspection in order to find and correct deficiencies, which will result in an improved product and/or service. 

The latter was exactly the case with the second generation (1994-2002) of the line of pickups developed by Dodge, to which my guest for this publication belongs: the 1995 Dodge RAM 3500 Extended / Club Cab Laramie SLT Dually Long Bed Pickup Truck Custom, a Full Size Class 3 Heavy Duty Pickup Truck / Medium Duty Truck. 

By the time when this generation was introduced to the market, Dodge pickup trucks were in a far third place, with barely 7% of the market share in United States, Ford and General Motors were leading the segment, for that very reason, executives at Chrysler Corporation were not precisely enthusiastic about the idea of supporting with talent and resources this new development. 

This process started in 1986, with the code name Phoenix and it was planned for introduction in 1991, but the resulting proposal was judged too conventional, more of the same, which I guess was a big disappointment for the development team, but on the other hand, it was the chance to rethink everything virtually from the ground up, a reengineering, whose outcome was released in 1994 with an unprecedented success... 

While the history of Funline Merchandise Co., Inc., started to back in 1993, when the market of diecast collectibles was undergoing the greatest transformation in recent times, due to the emergence of the Premium segment, it was during the short but quite prolific era of the Muscle Machines (MM) brand, that Funline had its apogee... 

The success of MM was not the result of marketing campaigns alone, NO, it was the confluence of several factors, including a novel product made with a higher quality level than the average, at the beginning of the present century and of course, the work of talented people. 

Chris and Ken Leong, with their Funline diecast company, the Australian artist Rohan Day, as well as other artists in the 3D design / graphic design departments, but also the great ideas put on the table by Steve Metz, a German-American entrepreneur, closely related with the Hot Rod culture. 

Metz wanted to bring to life in a three-dimensional way the work of his friend Ed "Big Daddy" Roth, replicating the efforts of Revell during the 60s, in plastic model kit form, but now he wanted them in diecast form and while he was searching for a diecast company to make this idea come true, he found a product by Funline Merchandise Co., Inc. in a weekend swap meet and part of the results of this contact is published here (another example of reengineering)...

It’s time to focus on my guest for this publication, a model I got in the secondary market, in a local diecast collectibles store, more than 5 years ago and I must confess that I found it unintentionally, because albeit I have been interested into find products by Funline Merchandise Co., Inc., I know they are harder to find over time and their prices are rarely at a reasonable point... 

Yet and with very low expectations, I found this gem, at the right price and it’s now part of my collection; I love this model for many reasons, the full diecast construction is a very important factor, no doubt, but the proportions, that on this item were altered, are in this case what adds even more charm to it, since as experienced collector and designer, I can notice the balanced and careful work so, what could be a weakness, became a strength here. 

It belongs to the 2004 West Coast Choppers / Jesse James Series, a line in the Deluxe / High End category and the presentation was a big and thick card, with a very old school design, some details were highlighted in high relief; just like with other products of this brand, the level of detail in the molds is fantastic, even better than in similar products in the same category and we’re talking about a product with a bit more than 15 years in the market. 

The paint job is prolix and accurate, it was made in plain white with glossy finishing (also offered in red), complemented by extensive tampos and/or decals mimicking the complex decoration on the actual vehicle, applied on the side panels and the hood, in the crab claw flames you can see tiny skulls; additional tampos were included for the front and tail lights, front and rear bumpers, even the windshield received tampos and/or decals, the chassis received black paint with glossy finishing and the exhaust system was painted in silver, amazing!... 

There are plastic inserts for the front and rear bumpers, front grille, exhaust tips at the rear and the bed has a removable plastic canopy, with more tampos and/or decals; it features opening hood, with detailed engine. 

The interiors were worked in medium gray, with a level of detail usually reserved for Premium models, complemented by clear windows; the "Slam!" action feature is also present in this model, which lowers it a bit more, working pretty much like an air suspension, including several plastic inserts and additional parts. 

The multipart wheels feature a wonderful and realistic rims design in chrome, again, with a quality expected for a Premium item and low profile styled rubber tires; while the wheels are pretty different to those included with the actual truck and this is a dually (but the rear wheels in this replica are single), well, I think it was a very appealing change that adds a singular touch to the model that I appreciate; besides, a nice trading card printed in full color with a picture of the actual vehicle, on both sides, is a bonus and it was made in China...
